Made some quick edits and uploading this video again with an extra sound demo. For those who have seen it, you can skip this video.
So a few things I did not mention in the review in order to keep the video short but some of you might find interesting.
1) They used computer simulation to understand how heat is transferred from the transistors to the chassis. With that, they were able to build the whole chassis into a giant heat sink.
2) There is a switch for changing XLR to RCA input and you have to use a screwdriver to access it. I asked Angus why and he told me it is to protect the amp because if you switched while playing music, you might damage the amp. The point is they put a lot of thought into the little things.
3) Mr. Kanta told me in regarding to the continuous bass output advantage the MC302 has, that is only true with the Sopra 2, once you change to a different speaker, the MC302 no longer has that advantage.
Ha ha. I’m watching this going - what? I swear I have seen this! Ha ha.
Thomas - just an FYI. Tidal has a fantastic video of the HAUSER piece honoring the Italian Covid responders. It is beautiful. And thank you for introducing me to this piece.
Aluminium is cheap.
Why not use titanium for inside or copper, and steel on outside.
I've looked it up, the measurements cost is£60 for aluminium..., and copper, titanium, steel and metal cost £380
Heat was a problem, so they used heatsinks. Obviously it's standard you have too.
Also no MOSFET design board.
If it was Class A. It would sound much better, even better would be Class AA, but your electricity bill would go up by 15%, Since it idols power at 100%. Without fluctuation.
I am wondering if you can purchase a DIY kit that would be 99% as good as this amp at an amazing price??
Sir thomas such a great person...
& his review is bias free...
I just love his simplicity..
Great review again, Thomas! I like the way you tell us what to listen for in snippets of music, and hearing about your interactions with your high-end friends is always instructive.
I appreciate that!
Super review and song at the end
Thanks Thomas !
Its always pleasing to hear ur detail description of the setup and what ur observation s are...
As you mentioned I too look out for all the instruments which gets dim in the larger orchestral multiple instruments...its important if u can hear all the mid range and feeble instruments as they give a different vision of the same music.
But as someone else too wrote these are with a hefty price 🤨 but yes best of quality always has a good price too
Thats a sharp set up ! ! Thanks Thomas for review love a warm/dynamic amp with great details Dynamic Peaks ohh my smile
Thanks! Really like this amp myself. If only I can afford it...
@@ThomasAndStereo I bet ! Build quality looks outstanding !!!! Just so sharp/Sleek looking ! Thanks again Thomas I didn't even know about this company until your review 😃
Yeah, once you start googling them, they are decently well known.
IMHO it came to life on the Exasound/Whafedale combo. Nice review.
very well said. It's easy to get a bunch of gear sound good but difficult with higher end audio equipment
Lumin definitely has some street cred. Lol. Thanks for another awesome video Thomas!
Nice amp ! Bipolar Junction transitors they act like a current control switch 😆
Thanks Thomas For the video i know you put in real work and Sound clips best I have heard from your channel !
Thats a sexy setup !
Thanks Tee Jay, always great to hear from you.
Hi Thomas. Another cracking review. I have been on this journey since the 60's. You may not be aware how rare you are in your ability to use descriptions and - especially - stories to honestly express the character of a piece of kit. Perhaps even more valuable for me is the wide experience you share with us indicating how items can be best matched with synergy in a system. Great to see your channel grow. Greetings to you and yours. (Re-uploaded)
Thanks Anthony for taking the time to reupload your comment, appreciate that.
Such a great review Thomas even though I probably wont ever own this amp.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Great review 👍
This Lumin amp is magnificent and it's great that you brought it to us, your viewers.
My fav amp is still the Pass Int 60 but the Lumin is close competition. Thanks.
Yeah, I like passlabs too.
@@ThomasAndStereo @mdr How would you compare this with the PL X350.5 or X350.8?
I just bought a Sugden A21SE, I need look no further.
Good review. Ty!
Damn it. I have come up empty handed as to why that percussive instrument is in Why Worry. My initial reaction after listening on my own rig was castanets, but the strikes produce some hollowness so I don’t think that is it. I think this one might remain unanswered. I am however better for you calling attention to that part of the song. Keep up the great work Thomas
Great video Thomas. I'll look for the Lumens at the next audio show... if there is another audio show. :/
Soon soon!
Thank you again for a great review, considering you are talking power amps, have you heard Audionet, if not do try to, the best amps we've heard, fast and non fatiguing
Thomas this is what I have learned throughout the years and I totally agree with you here, when you find a component that allows music that you have heard tons of times that allows individual spactial cues to come alive, like a cymbal strike or simmer or a percussions section to come alive or you even hear the band members talking or the musician actually breathing between notes, you take notice. These are things that every amp can’t do or every component or system can do and system synergy is paramount at this level.
This type of performance literally will put you mind in a state that you are at an actual concert, your feet will tap and your body will elicit an emotional response, some people will cry or clap at the end like they are at a real concert. Again most people never experience this, but once you have it’s hard to go back and you can’t un hear what you have heard. Your budget might restrict you, but your brain will always search for it, it’s like crack for audiophiles, as Chris Rock once said in a movie, it keeps calling you. This is not to say that you have to have it or any component, but it just isn’t as easy as saying well my system can do this or that, until you really hear and know what this or that truly is.
Always remember what is 13,000 or 20,000 now will be half of that a year or two from now if you can be patient or even less than, 5,000 or 10,000 or less than that if you can wait. As I have said to Thomas before, listening at this level when done and beyond done right isn’t just listening to music it is an “Experience that leaves your whole body wanting more of it”. Thomas your channel is growing and I for one will love when your start receiving D’Agastino gear and beyond from dealers similar to what Jays Audio lab channel buys and plays with. You are on your way my friend and I for one am quite proud of you and what you have accomplished and the contacts that you have made. You and your family stay safe and enjoy the holiday.
Man, this is so well written Sid and you are someone who really have experience with 'higher-end' gear. I will one day probably used this comment in one of my videos when I review something high-end. Thanks Sid, I like the fact you are so good at expressing yourself. If you had a youtube channel, it would be a killer channel.
You need to listen to PMC SPEAKERS. You will hear only the truth. Nothing added or taken away. Neutral.
Mokta Abdul ,yeah neutral is a dangerous word in audio and it means different things to different people. Some like neutrality and others don’t. I have heard neutral gear that was great and had it in my home and had neutral gear that was just awful. We all hear and like different things in audio and we all respond to different spatial cues, but I get your basic point and I will seek out PMC for a listen, which I haven’t heard, thanks.
@@moktaabdul6310 Interesting that you should mention PMC as PMC themselves chose LUMIN Amp to launch the new Fenestra loundspeaker in Montreal last year.

"Yes, Dear."
if you go over to the deep end, the comments will be :" No dear. We buy the house with the swimming pool"
never too late to leave a comment am i right? at least i left a like back in september.
i visited someone that had the lumen streamer in silver finish, its really eye catching in real life.
and look at this quadrupling of watts in bridge mode, impressive.
just got my NAD C 298 myself, i like to think the purifi modules can sound something like lumin.
percussive music is startling and immediate. fun for sure :)
Congrats with the C298. I have a purifi amp at my place too, really nice. Sadly it does not sound like the Lumin.
@@ThomasAndStereo hope you will do a purify video, in the meantime i have speakers to break in and thinking of getting a nice power cable for my new amp.
Loving the hifi life at the moment :)
Great review, I enjoy watching your channel and how you explain the differences in the products you review.
Have you ever reviews the NAD M22 V2. Wanted to know your opinion on it. Curious to know how you think it would pair with Kefr900's.
Thanks, sadly I have never heard the M22 v2 so I don't have an idea how the pairing will be.
Great review! Thomas, you GOTTA try the Benchmark Media AHB2's as monoblocks!
I heard so much good things about them.
Thomas & Stereo I have a monoblock pair of AHB2's, driven by a Benchmark LA-4 linestage preamp and its really stunning for the money.
THANKS GREAT REVIEW
thomas i see the ar ls25 is out of stock what do u rescomend instead
Depends if you want tubes or solid state. I wish I have a few more to try but sadly I don't. I might get a Hegel and will see if it matches well.
@@ThomasAndStereo OK THANKS BUDDY
PPS If someone wants to see case and heatsinking taken to extremes in design check out the Mission 777, 776...Pretty cool stuff.
Hi Thomas great video as always. Quick question any chance we can have a review & build details of Mr. DIY's speakers?
He has like 10+ speakers and many amps and preamps. It can be a very interesting video to show how he matches things but this will have to be after COVID.
Hello Thomas, in the Dire Straits track that you mentioned, the particular instrument that you mentioned (Shaker), through the Lumin System, was it very apparent or do you hear it just faintly in the background? Approximately, what volume setting do you listen at? Thanks
I hope Lumin will send you another review sample so that you can try the bridge mode. By the way, Spectral is known for the speed. I hope you review it one day.
I wish!!
Thomas hope you can review a Lumin streamer sometime. Perhaps compare to Auralic. They tune their sound a bit differently.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately I do not hear the lumin amp, if the streamers D2, A1, T2 and I have the X1. Excellent all.
very well built stereo amplifier
Sure is!
Would be nice for you to do a comparison between a high end streamer and mid range priced streamers since those are so popular now and there is a ton of snake oil around this.
Thanks !
PS People have been using the case as a heatsink since heatsinking was a thing. Quad 405 springs to mind.
Any amplifier that has the designer concerned with performance will use discrete stages using some/ all of long tailed pair, cascode, current mirror etc. instead of off the shelf op amp as well as discrete voltage regulation etc. for same reason designers choose a discrete output stage. This is standard for almost every amp of quality since the design of solid state matured in the early 70s.
Output impedance is normally quoted as damping factor and is as suggested the ability of the output stage to control the drive unit. It too has been a contentious issue since output transformers ruled (and their generally poor damping factor).
I think we should keep in mind that most things have been tried, tested made and forgotten many times before someone else comes along and says it is new.
Opamps can get a bad rap. There are proprietary and custom op amps in use now that you can't tell they are not discreet in blind listening.
@@scottlowell493 Sure, (well maybe) I was just saying. People have been searching for the 'ideal' op amp in audio since...well since the 741 had competition. There has been very little true advancement in the art since say the 1980s when you look at specs for noise and bandwidth product.
Op amps got bad reputation for two reasons, lot of bad implementations and lack of technical knowledge and understanding among people. Once someone said that OPamp are inferior to descrette , and now folks repeat that without knowing why. Some things you cant do in discrette, and some thing do limit OPamps, but in both cases level of sound quality depends on designer skill and budget limit
That Lumin streamer is full of Op amps. OP amps in most cases work od max +/- 20V so in power amps that demand much wider voltage swings, they can't be used as straigth gain stages
@@tomislavgasparic8100 I agree with that there are some outstanding ($$$) opamps available. I don't agree with what I said, or should have worded it differently. They are also great fun to play with.
@@tomislavgasparic8100 Texas for one I know have a range of high voltage opamps, 150/180v though of course you can't pop one in place of a 741. (I don't think...)
Match is key, but like i said before the AR LS25 is one of their best preamp. I'd really like to hear it in my setup i have now!
What I did not mention in the video is that Ls25 had crazy upgraded good tubes in it.
Potential when tested gives the best results.
One more thing, I take a peak on amps specs. It doubles power in 4 ohms, but as you think abot it from aspect of output impedance of 0.1 ohm, that is questionable. That number reacts with load like current limit, or on the end power drop.
Nice review Thomas! Thanks! Have you ever tried a Hypex Ncore amp? its a class D and mostly DIY, though there are brands with the Hypex inside (Nord Acoustics). Try them please, I think you want be dissapointed.
No I have not and I will someday, thanks.
This is not related to the video and I understand if you don’t reply, but I have a question. I know you have reviewed the focal aria 926 and I am purchasing the 936 some time soon. I was hoping I could get your recommendation between the Anthem MCA 225 and the Parasound Halo A23+ as power amps for them. They will be used in a home theater setup with a subwoofer crossed over at either 60 or 80hz.
Sorry, I never heard the Parasound so I don't know its sound signature. I would avoid using neutral gear if I can with the 936 but rather something with a bit of warmth.
could the dark characteristic be attributed to the low noise floor of the amp? Does this mean it is more transparent?
Impressions on the sound clips:
Silverline Sonata - bass is punchy and tight. Feels like chest-thumping. Overall sounds clean and detailed.
Wharfedale Elysian 4 - more range from highs to bass, more full, livelier sound. Also, that bass line humming in the background is absent in the Sonatas. Though the upper/mid-bass may not be as punchy as the Sonatas, the Elysians are fuller and have lower bottom extension.
Yeah, the Elysians bottom extension can rival the Focal Sopra2. I don't know if it makes it more transparent but I would guess so.
Hah! "Yeah no shhhh.....kidding!" You crack me up dude.
Hi Thomas, I appreciate this review you did of the LUMIN Amp. As someone who also owns a T2 Streamer and an Audio Research SP20 I was curious about this product. One thing that surprised me recently was when I tried bypassing my SP20 preamp and connected my T2 directly into my power amp. Honestly, I couldn’t even tell a difference. Have you tried connecting your T2 directly to the LUMIN Amp? If so, what was the result? - Regards, Dan
We did try and it really depends on the amp. Overall we prefer it with a tube preamp but there are listening sessions I was fine without it. With the Lumin amp combo, it can be a bit 'forward' for me so that combo requires careful cable and speaker matching for me.
@@ThomasAndStereo Thank you for your reply. I use Focal Sopra 3s and my current amp is an Audio Research DS225, but I want to upgrade it. I am closing in on either Luxman M900U, ARC 160S, Pass Labs XA160.8, or Boulder 1160. The LUMIN amp is a new contender for me and since I really like my streamer I’m thinking they will have good synergy. Any advice you have to give is appreciated.
Hegel H390 or 590!
Can you provide some pros and cons about T2?
Sounds like a winner.
At that price, it better be!
@@ThomasAndStereo lol I was going to say that but you mentioned it on the video, I guessed everyone would be saying that to themselves. Lol
Hi Thomas, have you or are you going to review one of the Lumin Streamers?
Nah, there is enough reviews on those already
i get to try some early 2000s high end gear this weekend feel like my zu might not like it lol
I remember in the old days amps would state the slew rate.which is the attach and decay of signal.the faster the better.snare drums snap.
Interesting, why don't they show that today.
@@ThomasAndStereo i have no idea, but it would be helpful.
I just came from watching a food channel and noticed the subscribers numbers. That garnered about 100k plus subs. I'm also a subscriber of Linus Tech Tips and that was 11 million plus subs. And then there's the Uncle Rogers channel with about a million plus subs. Interesting to note what the market finds interesting. Hifi is a niche area. Most of my friends are not really into hifi. Cost being the main reason. They will rather spend the money on handbags or travel vacations. A budget entry level hifi will cost at least over a thousand dollars and the end game is a bottomless pit. A $500 speaker is considered budget entry level, a $500 tech gear like microphone is considered mid level, and the costs builds up once the other components of the hifi chain gets added in. Most people don't even have a basic hifi system.
Nonetheless, it's good that the industry is innovating with new technologies and reviewers like yourself are focused on this area, so that hifi nerds like me have an avenue for destressing.
High end gear review is like watching Avatar, a fantasy movie. The prices are way over the budget allocated for a hobby. So I see it as a technological boundary of what is possible with today's technology and I do like watching fantasy movies. It's still entertaining and you've made it entertaining. You come across as an old friend sharing some experiences.
Thanks, yeah I was hoping to make the channel as a buddy chatting channel. That is partly also why I do answer comments.
I find the second demo much much better than the first set up. !
The 2nd pair of speakers cost $10k! Double the price of the first speaker. Also, the DAC used was 3 times the price of the DAC used in the first demo.
@@ThomasAndStereo Oh, never known that. I am glad I don't feel the other way around haha.
great video, hace you review the D-sonic
Thanks, Never heard it, hopefully one day.
@@ThomasAndStereo please do, thanks
The only thing that most new age youtube reviewers lack, is self criticism and awarness that they better not comment or talk about stuff they do not know for sure or understand, like in most cases techical stuff , specs or topologies. It's funny and sad in same time to watch that.
I love your show ❤ but that dac is 3 times my net worth
Forgive me, but what are the speakers behind you during most of this video? They are beautiful.
Those are monitor gx200 gold.
How did the Lumin fair against the Hegel H30? That's an interesting comparison.
I remember they told me the bass control was better with the Lumin.
I'm curious to hear this amp after this review. And not sure where this fits among the big names like PLINIUS, CLASSE, or even the PARASOUND JC1
I am sure it can compete.
Have you tried it with the Schitt freya?
Doesn’t Marantz do the same discreet circuits with their HDAM?
I don't know, sorry.
I've been rewatching your videos as I contemplate upgrades. Lol. Too bad the Focals can't be bi-amped. Then he could have the mc302 powering the bottom end and the Lumin on the top end. I don't understand why Focal dedigned the crossover to only accept one amp. Do you by chance know why? Did Lumin give you the Amp and DAC or did you end up buying them? I still see it in your most recent posts.
No I don't know why Focal cannot bi amp :(. Due to COVID, Lumin can't really use the amp for any shows so they lent it to me until they need it back. I might actually end up buying it by the time they ask for it back.
@@ThomasAndStereo Wow, what luck to have it to A/B test. Even more tasteful. Call Jeff Rowland and see if he'll let you review his 625S2 or the 535.
That's some sexy gear
Check out the speaker I post up at the end, the new Whafedale Elysian 4 looks amazing.
Ugly more like. Curved in. Doesn't even look like hi-fi.
Sexy is more plain straight with sharp edges, pure rectangular monolithic edge to edge design off concept looks.
I believe your house is built like that Ashwell as your TV, curved Inn, and car you drive also looks like the hi-fi you call this design sexy.
@@moktaabdul6310 Why so negative, friend?
By the way, while I do quite like the look of this gear it's by no means my favorite. My old beat up Heathkit AR-1515 is the sexiest amp in the world in my humble opinion..

Thomas, I have a Hegel H360 and Polk 707, would the Audio Research LS25 be a good match with those? Thanks.
Not a big fan of using a tube preamp with an integrated amp. I would do it once in a while but if your front end is a H360, I would spend the money elsewhere to improve my system.
@@ThomasAndStereo I have used a Feya+ in front of it and that is pretty good, also my Musical Paradise Mk3 as a preamp which was not as good as Freya.
@@brianvenable5350 Well, the LS25 is an upgrade from the Freya, I never heard the Freya+ but I would assume. The Musical paradise DAC or preamp? If it is a DAC, its normal.
@@ThomasAndStereo The MP Mk3 is their top line DAC which also has a preamp mode. Frey+ just means it's the version that has tubes. Thanks for info and keep the vids coming!
Yeah, you would need to get the MP new preamp to compete with the Freya+, I read some comments people telling me they prefer that over the freya+
What is it about the Audio Research preamp that makes it such a good match with the Lumin AMP? I am considering the AMP and have an audio research preamp Hence my curiosity
Perhaps email them and ask, they might be able to give a great response.
@@ThomasAndStereo Maybe I should rephrase my question. What was it your heard from the pairing of the Audio Research and the Lumin amp that was so special, compared to other preamps.
It's not true that most amplifiers use op-amps for voltage gain, they are mostly discrete. The features given in the list are all very ordinary. That doesn't mean it's not a good amp of course.
Can review the Crimson CS640E III monoblocks with the Crimson CS710 pre-amp? They're a true class B amp topology. They're English and distributed through Austin, TX. I guarantee you they'd let you review. Would be very interesting.
If I ever get a chance.
@@ThomasAndStereo You're the best. Yeah, they've been around since the 70's, and have a very cool industrial design. Would be really interesting to hear/review a Class B amplifier (which I've never seen before until I read Crimson it in a comment recently).
What do you reckon the difference between T2 and D2 Thomas?
T2 is all about clarity and sharpness. Going for maximum transparency. D2 is slightly rolled off, going for that smooth sound.
@@ThomasAndStereo thank you 😀
@@ThomasAndStereo Clarity and sharpness to the point of medical boring sound?
Why amp so small? Ever Review luman u1network player?
No I have not but maybe I should.
I wonder if Lumin does any market research , you can get a similar high-end amp ( Moon 330A ) for a third of the price ( $4000 usd ). Triple the price doesn't mean triple the sound.
I have used many $4k amps before as well as some moon amps and I can tell you, yeah not in the same ball park. Is it 3x better? I answer that in my conclusion of this video. ruclips.net/video/80Bg2RfLHSQ/видео.html
Sorry man but here full discrete amp stage means that output amplification is based of transistors. Input stage looks like opamp based which is good cause opamp performance is far better (lower distortion, greater CMRR).
You should get into sales man you would make a killing, if I had only 50k lying around I think I would get the 30k Sony control monitor and just this amp. No speakers.
There is something about your videos I can't find anywhere 😎
Thanks, appreciate it.
Thomas when is the Yamaha review coming?
That one will be a while.
Thomas, you had better apologise to Paul McGowan of PS Audio, he was in tears after your comments about his BHK amps
That is not just instantenious power.
It is the lack of time smearing and amp ability to maintain same behavior and harmoic structure of signal from lowest to highest power demand. Way that power amp react to load without changing signal structure. You said it has 0.1ohm out impedance, that is on low side of damping factor scale, but I bet it's a non global feedback design.
I now know why Mr Kanta sold his Kanta 2s. He replaced them with Sporas. 😁
Yes he did.

Hey Thomas have you heard the ANTHEM STR power amp? I wonder how it would compare to the MC452. If you can give me some guidance that would be great.
Sorry, I have not heard it before.
@@ThomasAndStereo ok cool do you think the MC452 is a good entry level amp at least or do you have some other recommendations?
I would say it is just an ok amp the MC452. Strangely, I did not miss it when it left my home. Good on the used market because it keeps its value. Decent but not outstanding for the money. Everything is relative.
@@ThomasAndStereo ok then, I guess I'll have to look into other 2 channel amplifiers. I'm just not very well versed when it comes to options and brands.
@@SuperHondaFitDriver Well it is still really good the MC452 if you can get a good price.
How do test tones sound on it? I am the ultimate audiophile. I only listen to test tones, No music. That way I can really get to grips with just how good my equipment sounds. No music getting in the way. Only test tones. I believe that all true audiophiles should only listen to test tones, and not music.
No idea, I have never tested that. I probably have a cd somewhere with test tone. Interesting idea I have to say.
Gee, I really wish you're joking here. Music getting in the way of listening to your system is one the most ridiculous thing I ever read on the Internet, and that's saying something...
@@yantrussart6584 I think he meant it in a way to see what kind of frequency the speakers can handle well. I know some people do run test tones to see how low the bass can go. Not my way of testing but I am always open to ideas and will know after trying it. If anything, out of curiosity.
@@ThomasAndStereo yes, I'm sure he listens to music. No true blue audiophile just listens to test tones only. But test tones are a good way to objectively isolate different frequencies and see how the amp and speaker combination performs on those specific frequencies. I think it gives a basic guideline on how it will ultimately sounds. Once you throw in harmonics, room acoustics, etc.... it will take on a new presentation.
@@veritas932 this is a classic case of audiophile as opposed to music lover. The former listens only to their equipment while the latter listens to the music their equipment is playing. Although I appreciate good equipment, I consider myself a music lover.

@@DIEGOCHRISTful Any LUMIN player can be used as a pre-amp (the Leedh Processsing Volume Control helps in this regard), but obviously only LUMIN P1 has inputs. So they are best used like that if you only have a single LUMIN Source for your music. If you have a turntable or disc spinner, then P1 or a traditional pre-amp is much easier to use.
Damping factor and distortion measurements are not listed in the specs. Unacceptable for a unit costing 14k.

But I do think a DIY amp will be the best value for money, but only if you know what you're doing. same for DIY speakers. or buy used, they are also good value if you don't have the technical knowhow or the equipment.
@@ThomasAndStereo bridged both together. They cost £700 each, then this at £11K.
Have a look at inside, the amount off things going inside, jam packed with features.
Same power, but Rotel uses 4 = bigger capacitors than Luminous using 8.
Mine gets serviced every 5 years, since it has every capacitors life is 9000 hours, then dies out with other circuits needs replacing. Was yours serviced or brand new?
RB1090 uses 2 = 600V transformers, vs Lumin single. And Lumin is asking £11K, WTF, LMFAO. Beyond a joke.
@@veritas932 it's the truth, like you said, if you know what you are doing, building DIY, amp, buying separate circuits, and asking someone to make this.
Just look how cheap those 10.000 microfards Lumin is using.
Consider the price, it should come with 30.000 microfards.
Look at Pioneer M22, power amplifier, the pioneer will put it too shame, even piss and shit on it. An amplifier from 1985, kicks the shit out off it, and costing half than it is.
@@ThomasAndStereo Rotel are on the bright side V sound you like.
I disliked this guy 1000 times and told youtube not to recommend him .... why does he still pop up.
