Daniel, How about renting goats. There are people who rent their goats for brush control. One of the largest operations rents their goats to airports. Goats also are in demand to take on undergrowth where the land is too steep to safely mow. As you point out marketing is the key.
Especially in California, to get ahead of the fires they have the goats eat all of the years of built up fuel.😉
Yes, the airport I used to work at would rent goats to clear a steep area.
Just a side note; I really like how you let your dog try and handle it's relationship with the goats before you get involved, even when that involves growling, mouthing, and barking. Too many times people try and force their dog to stop "making scary noises" without managing the goats behaviour. Can leads to a dynamic where dogs can get hurt or bullied because they aren't allowed them to stick up for themselves and set boundaries.
I wish the USA had more of a market for goats and sheep. The meat is delicious and yet most American have never eaten it. None of the stores around here sell goat meat. The only store I know of to buy lamb is Sam's club and it is shipped in from New Zealand and it is expensive. I see that people are starting to learn more and more about these types of meat watching videos like your and Dutch. Thank you both for taking the time to make videos on getting goats and/or sheep.
Can’t believe there aren’t more people selling goat meat. Especially in parts of the US with high immigrant populations.

This is very informative. I'm not looking to make money. I like goat meat. It's gonna be another two season until I'll have that area of the yard fenced with a shed and shelter. We bought raw land and built so it's a work in progress

Exactly! That's what I plan on having, there are also crosses like Pygora and Cashgora, if you want smaller breeds that can also possibly be milkers.

You can also earn money on goats by running a petting zoo. Maybe get a few other animals for variety, like miniature ponies and miniature pigs. I had a step-grandfather that owned a trout-fishing pond. The two businesses would go together well in a resort type of rural area. Some kids could be entertained in the petting zoo while others could fish. Miniature golf would go well too.
I got interested in goats because people were getting paid to graze their goats on weeds and brush, especially hard-to-control stuff like kudzu and thistles.
Daniel, I know you love Bear, you can see it through both you and Bear. Dogs are my favorite, I have 4 myself. You can see the love in Bear's eyes, and I'm sure if there were the right kind of vocal cords and all, we would have heard....I love you, Daniel!

My city runs 2 herds of brush-clearing goats to get to those places where you look at and go "how on earth do they use a mower on that". then sells the excess goats for meat to reduce over-wintering costs.

Love the videos mate.. I'm from Australia I work in a small slaughterhouse we kill goats... I've noticed there very hard to buy but there's a huge market.. my idea was buying approx 100 acres running a heard and either selling directly to slaughterhouse or start my own as I'm a slaughterman and a butcher! I agree with you, I raise registered purebred Nubians with top milk lines. In Oklahoma I can sell 100 gallons of milk each month. At a going rate of $8 to $10 a gallon there is a bit of money there, but added value of making something with that milk beats that.
Show goats and great pedigrees put a good price on my kids.
Daniel, doesn't Bear help you in most videos!? I love that dog! I agree on the registered thing. My registered goats go for three times the amount of the unregistered. Knowing the good herd names in your breed is the key! I was lucky to get some well known names right from the start. Great video!

I agree with your top three for goats, good job! The US is still importing millions of pounds of goat meat annually because US producers can't keep up with the demand. We process some of our kiko kids for our own freezer, it is an awesome meat. Marketing is so true. We were able to sell all of our commercial this year just by marketing. Having digital scales and selling by the pound live weight makes things handy too. We do sell primarily registered kikos though, 100% New Zealand, Purebred and a few percentages. If you are ever looking for a good registered buck, (or does) you should stop by some time.

I'm just getting started in raising goats and farming and the more I hear about the USDA, the more I realize they are there to protect the big industrial farms and stiffle small farms. Just add them to the list of federal agencies that need to be done away with.

I have been searching for goat meat for years, so I could try it, see if I liked it, before I committed. Most restaurants that serve it (Houston), serve it at a huge price, OR, it's so covered in Korean spices, that you can't taste the meat. I think I may make the plunge this year, regardless.

I recently watched a documentary about King Billy . In Australia ranchers are herding feral goats to sell to North America and Europe. They russled 40,000 goats before noon and the narrator said they were worth $250,000 ! I so want to start farming. Just don’t have any land and land is expensive around here. I work for myself landscaping and also don’t want to quit my day job or move to far from my clients. Land is cheaper an hour from here

What goats are worth and what they sell for is a total different story.
If the math is correct, 40,000 head makes them worth $6.25 per head. Seems hardly worth it.
4,000 would be $62.50 per head. Perhaps profitable since you have nothing invested other than round up and transportation cost.
400 head would be $625.00 seems unlikely.
Just a numbers point of view.

Great tips Daniel. We have talked about getting a few goats to raise for meat but never on the bigger scale. What about goat poop is that a good fertilizer to collect and sell. I know we had rabbits one time and sold the poop for fertilizer and it was worth the time to collect it.
Well it is great fertilizer but I've never tried selling it.

We have a restaurant "The Cave Bar and Grill" in Lanagan, Missouri it's on facebook. We have Kiko/pygmy goats and our customers love them. We have coin opp feeders and the goats pay for themselves, lol.

Another way you can make money I have some milk goats and I buy bottle calves I feed the calves goats milk I even have some caves nurse right on the goat while she's on the stanchion
I saw a craigslist post this morning asking $1k a piece for registered kiko bucklings in Northwest OK. I didn't even think you could register kikos. I guess I missed that during my goat research.
Yes you can and some of them are very expensive.

Yep I have seen, read and heard about the dairy regulations and there are a lot....also with the meat processing centers. When we drove around in northern Idaho (or future home) we saw lots of ppl who were game processors for elk, moose, etc. and also livestock processors. That was something I never knew and surprising yet definitely a nice thing.
The bloodlines was something I was familiar with due to my dog interests but didn't realize how important it was in goats and sheep....also learned about pure breed vs ….I already forgot the word for the one that is 100% pure....full blood?

When I learned how to make goat milk soap, it didn't use much milk at all. Lots of messing around tho, a detailed process. Edit: true soap is made from any kind of fat, reacting with lye. It can leave your shower and your hair n skin scummy bc of the fat. Many bar soaps are not true soap.

Goat meat is NOT the number one consumed meat in the world. It’s not even close. Pork is the number one meat globally followed by poultry, beef and then sheep/goat. In fact, pork consumption is about 8 times bigger than sheep and goat combined.

I love watching you, your goats and Bear. I have 4 goats. Got them for mainly pets. I have 2 Nigerian Dwarf, one male, one female, 1 Nubian dwarfs, male and 1 Nubian regular female. My female ND is pregnant, due January 3, 2020, by the ND billy. My female Nubian regular was going to be breed by my Nubian Dwarf, but the female got very sick, almost died, and she is too small to breed. That male Nubian is always in Rut and drives me crazy. I have nothing to breed him with and now wish I never got him. I was so new to goats and didn't know any better. Maybe he will become dinner :(. HERE IS where your help is needed. We have 50 acres with cattle on it and we take the calves to market to make money. We want to start raising meat goats. It is my understanding that we can raise cattle and goats on the same property, each will eat the preferred. Before we buy any goats to start our meat goat herd, I want all of the advice I can research. Right now I am thinking we should buy KIKO. Maybe buy 10 females and 1 male, all registered. Reason I will choose Kiko is, I've heard, they make better mamas, they don't need their hooves trimmed as often, they are more resistant to worms and they eat more off the land, when available. If I am correct in that thinking, my next thought is once 10 mamas have, lets say, 2 kids each that came from that 1 buck, who can then breed any of my kids? or should I even worry about that, but rather sell all of the kids and when my nannies get to old to have kids, get new nannies and a new buck to do it all again. I don't want to wait until things occur and then ask questions. Trying to save myself future headaches. Glad I watched this video. I will buy registered rather than wish I did. Thank you

Time versus dollars for non registered animals is the auction sale imo. One trip and your done, instead of dealing with 10 or 20 people or more just to sell off your goats.
Daniel how often do you change your breeding Billy? I know with cattle we changed the bull every 2 or three generations to avoid inbreeding problems.

Most of the time 50 lbs is the perfect market size. I’d say usually that’s 6-8 months old for most meat goats.
