  • So by the mid-90s the video game industry was once again booming and this attracted the attention of the Japanese electronics giant Sony. In 1994, Sony introduced their Playstation console which successfully coupled cutting edge technologies with some great games. But Nintendo and Sega weren’t just sitting around. In the 90’s we would see the introduction of the Sega Saturn and eventually the Sega Dreamcast as well as Nintendo’s immensely popular Nintendo 64. And with this new hardware came a new era of immersive games. Games were going 3D, and with the introduction of CD’s, the size of games increased dramatically allowing for much longer and complex storytelling. Local multi-player and split screen games also became popular during this time as consoles such like Nintendo 64 were now powerful enough to support these kinds of social games. And games on the PC were becoming more immersive as first person shooters began to flourish on the platform.
    But Sega saw many failed launches in the 90s due to poor marketing and some poor games. By the end of the 90’s the industry had lost confidence in Sega and even its revolutionary Dreamcast could not keep the company competitive in the hardware space, but it wouldn’t be long before a new player would take Sega’s place. Next week we’re going to talk about Microsoft’s X-Box.

      lol... not even a shred of evidence that suggests that's true. I've been playing video games since this shows when it started. I've played every shooter. I'm an Eagle Scout that's never had a run in with police so much as any criminal record. I served in the military but never fired a shot at another human being. I don't currently have the desire shoot another human being. Video games are not the problem... it's the parents and the child's up bringing and/or actual psychological problems. A gun doesn't fire unless someone pulls the trigger.

    I was always in the PC "club" and while I was aware that consoles existed, I never liked them. The PC had great simulators and adventures. I do not recall any of them being made for consoles. I mean, take just the good old Lucasfilm and later Lucasarts games, from various StarWars simulators to adventures like Monkey Island, The Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max. Also The Dig was a nice adventure. And games like Transport Tycoon, delivering graphics that no console at that time could match. These were "my" games. No console "jump and run" stuff which I never liked at all. There were a few games for PC and consoles, but PCs had superior graphics and performance. And a PC can be used for anything, not just games. Basically that is how I learned english as a kid. Not at school, but from PC games that I mentioned. And programs I worked with. 3D Studio, Premiere, AutoCad, Photoshop and similar - all self taught. The programs were actually games for me as well.

    • @utubeviewer2550
      @utubeviewer2550 8 лет назад

      Same thing here. I had a dictionary by my side while playing Day of the Tentacles :)
      I used to rent out a console and stay up all night trying to finish whatever game i wanted to play. But the 90s were all about PC games for me.

At Computex this week they showed off something where you were held up in mid air with straps and you would feel like you were floating freely while wearing a VR headset, I think it was a Oculus Rift if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't Blood more of a Doom kind of game? Descent was the only 3D full axis combat FPS I'm aware of. The solo game was ok, but the online multiplayer was fantastic. Plus the level editors out there made it a lot of fun. I'll admit, I was more into Descent 2, but both were great games.

    Fun fact about Quake: Quake was originally meant to be an RPG game set in medieval times, completely unlike the predecessor Doom. However, one of the lead designers was insistent on making the game a shooter just like Doom. While Id was initially strongly against this change of pose, they eventually gave in and Quake became a time-skipping shooter instead of the intended RPG.

    • @borismatesin
      @borismatesin 8 лет назад

      XboxAhoy covered that in pretty good detail in his Quake video, and to top it off, the initial RPG idea didn't really go away - Hexen II (which used the Quake1 engine) turned out a really good game in its own right.

    I highly encourage everyone to check out the "Making of Crash Bandicoot" articles by Andy Gavin.
    It is hard to overstate the technical achievement Crash 1 represents- the amount of power they squeezed out of the PS1 was absolutely bonkers and unprecedented. The people at Sony didn't even believe what they were doing with the PS1 was possible- they tried and *failed* to make a similar game.
    The number of crazy tricks they used to compress everything into the play station is INSANE. Andy Gavin's experience at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory probably contributed to that. :)
    So, I know that a lot of the people on here might not be as into the technical coding side of gaming, but seriously- check those articles out. Great commentary on crazy smart people basically forging the path for how 3D games work.

    The best selling PC game of the 90s was "Myst." It is significant for a number of reasons. It was published first for Macintosh and then ported to PC. In the early 90s Apple Computers were for games and Windows was the businessman's PC. The success of Myst forced Microsoft to take games seriously.
    Also how can you make a video about 90s Nintendo and not mention Pokemon? PlayStation may have dominated the home console market but Pokemon on the gameboy not only saved Nintendo it allowed them to capture 95% of the portable game market. Not to mention Nintendo made a fortune selling Pokemon cards and from the Cartoon show. Nintendo of the late 90s really had a multi-media approach to gaming.

      Consoles were more relevant than PC's for gaming then. Kids had consoles to play games, but not all kids had PC's to game (let alone a PC to use). More games were made for consoles and more people had them. PC is great and all now, but had barely any relevance compared to consoles.
      (Not saying PC was bad or had a lack of history. It's just that console was GAMING back then.)

      So does Sony's history and Nintendo's. But more people considered consoles as the main power of gaming back then. Not everyone had PC back then and fewer even got them for gaming specifically. Heck, arcade gaming was the thing back then but when consoles came out it seemed more revolutionary than PC as game developers headed their attention mostly to consoles. Not saying PC didn't have it's games, but back then, console was were gaming was at.

      +cosmophonic12 early 90s...maybe you have a point, but the pc game market was mainstream long before ps1 launched.
      I was in comprehensive school in the mid 90s and most boys had or had access to PCs that could play games. i don't think anyone in my year didn't play command and conquer, sim city 2000 etc. So pc gaming was big by at least 95 if not a year or two earlier.
      in contrast, I couldn't name 2 people back then that owned a PlayStation when they came out.
      all that being said, I'm from the UK. So maybe consoles weren't add big over here and we adapted pc gaming sooner because of that. different markets, different perspective.

    • @audreywinter6910
      @audreywinter6910 8 лет назад

      Are there gender exclusive PC's in the UK?? :-P
      I remember playing Civilization on my 486 in the mid 90s in Germany but I don't have a console to this day. Hubby has a PlayStation and I might have played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls on it, but that's about it for my console career.

    • @XanothAvaeth
      @XanothAvaeth 8 лет назад

      No, and while my wife had a pc back then too, I didn't personally know any girls that played pc games back then.
      I do think culture in the UK means fewer women from my generation got into pc gaming. I kept in touch with plenty from my year from school and none that I know of are into pc gaming. Although a few from they year below, friends wives etc. Just seems a smaller fraction compared to younger gamers.
      I took a game design degree, and out of about 300 computing students that year there were maybe 10 women. Compared to when I went back a few years later for a post head, it was a lot closer to even.
      Maybe just UK, maybe just my county, maybe just that year :p

    While the N64 had a 64-bit processor, it had only a 32-bit system bus and mostly relied on 32-bit code (note that even today, most applications are 32-bit). It's a terminology thing. In North America all electronic games with a video output are called "video games", while in the UK and the non-English speaking world the same general application for all electronic games were called "computer games" up until the 2000s (in the UK) and the 2010s (in many non-English speaking countries).

      Impossible to be exhaustive in what games are mentioned. But I feel like if there was less time spent on the examples they do pick, to speak in more general terms then they could have given us a broader and more representative history. I too feel like some culturally significant titles of that generation were missed and the concentration on but a few titles, skewed the presentation of the period. They e chosen this method by which one game stands for a whole genre, which is fine but then they go into such detail that without prior knowledge you'd have no way to know what was a genre trope or something particular to that title. If the terms had been more general the points could have been illustrated by a number of games rather than just one

Focusing on that year's CES where Sony got on stage to tell everyone they had a partnership with Nintendo. Too bad the Dreamcast only got a passing notice. It was a damn fine console with some great games. I've sunk countless hours into Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom vs SNK, and Crazy Taxi, Sega Rally 2, and Ikaruga just to name a few. Great memories.

    This episode could have been split into two parts. Your best video so far.

    A discussion of the impact of PlayStation should never pass over "Gran Tourismo". Real physics in a racing simulator was the ticket for me. PlayStation deserved it's own episode.
    Before that, it was "Sundog" in 1985, on Atari 520 computer with a RISC CPU, a GUI (Digital Research GEM), a color monitor and a 1/2 megabyte of total memory, into which the OS must be loaded before use. With my Olivetti Spark-Jet printer, this thing was a powerhouse in it's time and a remarkable achievement by Atari.
