Sega and More Mature Video Games: Crash Course Games #8

  • So we ended the last episode nearing the close of the 1980s and Nintendo had become the dominant player in the home console market, but Sega, originally a slot machine game company during World War 2, was looking to get its own console into players’ homes. Sega’s first console wouldn't see much success, but with the introduction of Sonic the Hedgehog on the technologically superior Sega Genesis, Sega established itself as the new best thing in video games. This would be the start of a new round of console wars and the era that brought us more mature games including fighting games, 1st person shooters, and lots of sports games. This maturation of games also led us to the software ratings system by the ESRB. But Sega and Nintendo would not be the alone in the market for long, next week we’re going to talk about the entrance of technology monolith Sony and their introduction of the Playstation.

    This comment section is so much more cringy than the video. The humor is not forced, he actually looks like he's having a lot of fun, but in a dorky and free way you're not used to, that's all. They don't take their own jokes very seriously, they're being light-hearted, and it's so much better than if they were too rigid and overly professionnal.
    Also, to all the people complaining under each video about missing infos: crash course videos are only 10 minutes long... important stuff will always be cut. Why do you have to be rude? You could present it as "hey, if you're interested in the subject, you can check out this thing that is related to it". That would be a good comment to leave.

    • @georgeandrews1394
      @georgeandrews1394 8 лет назад +6

      Well, Andre does seem to condense information more than the others; however, I think (for one) that's because a lot of us are already very familiar with this stuff. CC Games seems to draw people familiar with the topics discussed. The other courses do that as well, but they also draw a lot of people who have never heard of the topics before (or just didn't pay attention in class). The other courses seem to have a more balanced audience than this one; you aren't going to have people watching this because their history unit test on gaming is coming up and they haven't studied.
      Also (for two), the series is only going to be in the ballpark of twenty episodes, and that's not much time to cover all the things they want to cover. I guess Andre didn't have much time to spare.

    Hey there, to the people that run Crash Course, I hope you get to read this. Its a bit ranty and I am sorry but I feel like needed to get it out of my chest. I enjoy all your CCs and the work you put in them, but I feel there is so much to improve here, so here it goes. sorry sorry sorry:
    I'm sorry I have to speak my mind here. I want to LIKE this CC, but I fucking hate it. From its titles to its content.
    First off the title: "CC Sega and More Mature video games". So missleading! They barely talked about that. This is a CC about the early 90s in the gaming industry. Not SEGA. They almost didn't talk about Sega. Who founded it? Who owns it now? How did they manage to move from 8bits to 16bits consoles? What about the other consoles Sega had, what about the end of Sega? If this is a CC about Sega, they should talk about the entirety of Sega, not Sega in the early 90s.
    I understand what this series is. This is a chronological narration of the highlights of gamming over time. And so we are now in the early 90s. I get that. I understand they are going to talk more about Nintendo or Sega in the future as the timeline moves along but then change the freaking titles man! They are so missleading.
    And the content. Again I get the format that we are going here is kinda like a timeline based CC where move along the events in the history of gaming. But there are so many things and repercussions and PEOPLE involved that don't get any mention. Who promoted the ESRB? Why it had such an impact on games? What about arcades? (THEY had the dominant market in this era, not consoles, why even talk about them?) What about founders or developers that had major impact in gamming at the time? In CC History or CC Chemestry or CC Astronomy we had all these people and important names that had huge impact in them, but here nothing? Things just... happened?
    I understand this is a CRASH Course, and it is not supposed to be too deep. But dang it, at least I am expecting the same quality and content than the other CCs. I learned things from the other CCs. This one? Just goes over things from waaay to far and never dives into any subject.
    I am sorry for my rant, as I said I really really want to like this CC, that's why I watch every single one of them. But I just can't. This one in particular and the Nintendo one are so basic and they lack so many events and data. The titles should be changed as well. I hope for playstation we at least get some names or we get some explanations on how consoles moved from 8bits to 16bits or something other than "Here is Sony, and they never got a cool mascot like the others and games got cooler but Nintendo and Sega were still around see you next time".
    /rant
    If you get this sorry again for the toxicity, I really just hope for the best of you and this videos.
    Lots of love

    • @ArgKnoxville86
      @ArgKnoxville86 8 лет назад +8

      +CrashCourse Hey there. So awsome to hear from you. Sorry again for my rant I was a little bit flustered. I do still stand by the fact that the titles of these cc could be more accurate to the subject presentes. And also, the content could have some improvements and not just state bits of facts of each era. Like engine development or technological improvements explanation. Also mention the names of developers or designers that made the history of gamming. Also from what I read in the comments lots of people find the geeky nerdy jokes too forced and kinda cringy.

      AO is like NC-17; very few retailers will agree to stock them so they almost never get made. EC is pretty common; those are for educational kid's games (like Dora the Explorer or whatever) and you'll see them a lot. EC meaning Early Childhood ofc.

      He's a popular mascot character who is a humanoid animal with a large supporting cast of primarily other humanoid animals. Those characters are designed to be visually appealing but not cute. There aren't many franchises with a lot of visually appealing humanoid animal characters that are also intended for older audiences (the older the target audience, the more wonky and unappealing the designs usually get).
      Why does the furry interest surprise you?

      It's an interesting topic that will draw in a pool of people who probably don't know that much about gaming's history. They'll get that, but sprinkled in are these cringy catchphrases, trying to eek out a laugh in a "I get that reference" way. I imagine it's like big bang theory, which is appreciable if you're not really a part of it.
      Ultimately, we have two audiences here. I'm sure the majority enjoys that sort of thing, but some of us are so familiar with these things that expecting to laugh or even smile at a reference we've seen a thousand times is irritating.

      Brikoth This is why I noted Andre saying these puns with a hint of irony and self awareness.
      The Big Bang Theory, which I am not a fan of, has very much made comedy out of laughing at nerds and "nerd" culture and, more offensively, laughing at Sheldon for having what is effectively autism.
      So many jokes in that show revolve around Sheldon not being able to conduct himself like a normal person and every time he does so the canned laughter errupts.

    A lot of people don't realize this, but the 90's was a period of tremendous evolution for video games. In that ten year period, we saw the 8-bit era come to an end, and the entirety of the 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit eras. We also saw the beginning of what would become the Sixth generation of console games. That's a whopping FIVE console generations in one decade.
    In contrast, since the year 2000 we've only seen three console generations (and a metric fuckload of Call of Duty games). No wonder the 90's is known as "The Golden Age of Gaming."

      You're thinking of the original Wolfenstein 3D. Doom did indeed have stairs and variable wall/floor heights. What it didn't have was levels with multiple floors, there was only one horizontal plane (whose height could vary).

    • @stevemanart
      @stevemanart 8 лет назад +3

      MC Mosfet modern tabletop gaming started in the 1970s, and had a massive boom then,and then again in the 80s which was followed by the moral outcry in the 90s and the second boom at the turn of the century. The current boom is a normalization of the passtime, but isn't anything new to the industry.
      Giving only lip service to the foundation of modern gaming industry, and saving exploration of it or a second unit is bad teaching.

      I've been playing DnD since the early 90s, I'm aware of the long history, it just makes more sense to split RPGs into a different unit, instead of skipping around each decade with no focus. Or better yet, give RPGs their own series.

      Or the critical "in-between" step between board games and video-gaming, the electro-mechanical games of the 50s-70s. Beyond the obvious pinball games, there were a HUGE range of these things, and it's an area of gaming that's almost completely forgotten about today.
      (Funfact: Nintendo simultaneously invented the FMV game and the QTE game in 1974 with the *original* version of Wild Gunman. It used 35mm film. Really.)

    Nitpick: It was actually Doom's predecessor, Wolfenstein 3D, that was the real pioneer in fan-based modding. Doom's mod support was directly inspired by the gigantic range of fan-made programs created to mod every element of Wolf3D. There was even a big controversy in '92 or so, when Apogee (W3D's publisher) started trying to come down on homebrew level creators legally, and it was one of the things that inspired Id Software to split away from them, because Id loved the mod scene.

    Also, Doom wasn't 3D. It's not that some people say it isn't really 3D, it's a fact that it isn't 3D. It's a 2D game that make you think that it is 3D. Same with wolfenstein 3D.

      Doom is talk about because it was so influential. It was really huge. There where more copies of Doom then windows. Something that said inspired Gabe Newell, a former microsoft employ to break out on his own and found Valve with Mike Harrington.
      So while Doom was not the first 3D game it was the big one. The one that is the father of FPS games (And grandfather would he Wolfenstein 3D)
      Descent was not the first 3D game I would say. I mean there where several flight simulators out before that. Some where quite popular to at the time. And Doom came out in 1993 while Descent came out in 1994. Descent was however quite a technical achievement. Not only did it use full 3D maps with six degrees of freedom which made it quite unique. But it also used texture mapping on all those polygons. Something flight sims in the past did not do in general. But even Descent use some sprites. (So by some people definition it would not be a 3D game :P)
      Also I do not like the notion that Doom is 2D game. No. It is not a strictly 2D game. It is better to call it a 2.5D game to actually convey that it used a lot of clever tricks to create it 3D world. So while yes. The game does take place in what is especially a 2D map it actually utilize a 3D element to these maps. A projectile you fine can actually hit a ledge. And you can to some degree pull off "jumps". It actually do check height. But of course is not truly 3D. Why is just better to call it 2.5D then go around making people confused, often just to be pretentious.
      And if I may go off on a bit of a tangent. I often hear that because such and such is using Ray Tracing that it not using true 3D. This is just plain wrong. Ray Tracing it self can be used to create fully 3D environments. So please if you are one of those that say that for example Wolfenstein was not a 3D game because it used a Ray tracing engine then pleas stop that. It was how it used Ray Tracing that matters. Ray Tracing is actually use sometimes to make fully 3D environments but it actually take a insane amount of power to do so. But it had to compete with the technique when you trying to draw complex reflections. Real Time rending using Ray Tracing for a fully 3D environment (rather then the 2D ones use in for example Wolfenstein) is something we have not been able to pull of until quite recently. And even then it tend to be quite constraint. And that is why is not used for full 3D rendering. Ray Tracing techniques however are use for things like hit scans and even interacting with UI elements in a 3D environment. Today's games often use a large amount of different techniques to make the magic happen on the screen.
      In the end all game development is iterative. So often trying to determine who was first becomes rather hard and often end up as a argument over definitions. Was I, Robot from 1984 the first commercial 3D game? What about about Battlezone that was released all way back in 1980?

    • @efuii
      @efuii 8 лет назад +2

      That's because Doom looked 3D and that was reason enough in that time. Plus, the texture mapping tech that id Software created for Doom is still used to this day. Doom changed the industry of games in a way that Descend wouldn't dream of doing.

    To really cover that time frame you also need to look at Commodore computers. The C64 had a huge impact on personal computing and at home gaming. It also basically started the computer piracy industry. Using the disk or tape drive you could copy someone else's game. The C64 games circulated with it not uncommon for people to have purchased only a small fraction of their games. C64 with its keyboard also introduced people to computer programming which the SEGA or Nintendo consoles did not. Those programmers going on to make more games. C64 also became known for several 2 player co-op games using a joystick. One karate game using the 8 joystick directions plus the button allowed for 16 moves without the use of whacky combo buttons.

    That's not quite how I remember it guy. When doom was released the internet may have existed in some form, but there was no online play as we know it today. The net play stuff was for people on LAN (local area network) who could play locally with another player if they had 2 capable computers in the same house, and one was a tech geek (networking used to be very hard). Not long after that LAN party's were the standard for network multi-player. People would bring their entire computer systems over to each others houses to play video games. It was a huge hassle but was worth it especially for party's lasting several days. It would be 2 console generations after this before main stream consoles integrated any sort of networking, so for a while anything other than split screen multi-player and fighting games was strictly a home computer thing.

    Sega Master System was not void of great games, but they obviously didn't have as many. One in particular though set a precedent for a genre of games which still is seen today in the modern versions: the Japanese RPG. Obviously the big name everybody knows is Final Fantasy series, and it was released back in 1987, but two days later came Phantasy Star. It had a more in-depth world and storyline, as well as devoted characters with backgrounds. On top of that, it was in a futuristic setting, not many treaded into that area with RPG's before.
    It's core gameplay mechancs set the precedent for JRPGs, and all that followed took something from Phantasy Star and incorporated into it's own: including multiple Final Fantasy titles.
    So while Sega didn't have the big market push it's first console, it had a few games that had a HUGE impact on gaming as a whole across it's several platforms.
    Another example of impact: Peripherals. With the Sega Genesis, they tried add-on peripherals as it was something that would be a future piece to gaming consoles (at least for a while), but it did not take off on Sega. Instead, Sony and the PS2 really is where it started to see a rise. Sega had many attempts at innovation, but usually were too early to the game when the technology was still too clunky to be marketable.
