Monroe Robbins If you actually checked the links to the sources Adam gave you would see a completely different story. America is 8th in the world for upward mobility not 16th. That 16th listing is on a son’s wealth compared to their father’s. A finding that the study itself says doesn’t really mean anything. Anyone who has been poor and credit less who actually looked for a credit card would know that several are available. Their interest rates just suck since they’re for a first time card holder. His $400 dollar emergency claim is bs too. That study actually said that 61% of Americans have $400 or more cash on hand for emergencies. Not that 39% couldn’t handle or survive a $400 emergency. Just that they don’t have $400 cash set aside for emergencies. Just check the links that Adam left if you don’t believe me. I’m just amazed that he left the links to the evidence that proves he was wrong. Even more amazed at how many people didn’t even bother checking and just believe the things he says to be true! SMH

@@SkySong6161 Very true, we used to actuallly only have a mini fridge so for us it was really hard to not have to buy everything last minute because nothing would fit
Not being able to buy in bulk is the least of the problems. The poor can pretty much always buy in bulk, but it sometimes requires getting together to do so. The real issues tend to be things like lack of banking, so they have to pay more to get their paychecks. Lack of grocery stores, so they wind up having to buy through more expensive convenience stores and an inability to get loans if they need them, so they're stuck going to payday lenders if they do need extra cash.
A major problem with these comments is assuming poor people are lazy and don't want to put in the work. However, there a tons of factors I encourage people to think about. Just because you did it doesn't mean we all can. I'm in college right now and I worked my way up from community college, but I have opportunities and privileges others don't.
Also the amount of people below the poverty line means that most ot those people have jobs statistically and aren't sitting around twiddling their thumbs
Also if someone is "lazy" that does not mean that they are a bad person. "Laziness" is just what happens when someone is burnt out from life tasks they need to do. This might be from overwork, depression, anxiety, or any other number of stressors. This doesn't mean someone is a bad person, just that they need some support to resolve the problem.
It's not always easy but it is very possible. I used to work at McDonald's as a crew member and struggled to pay my bills then I got a second job at a local gas station and got caught up and eventually got ahead, granted it took time and working 50-65 hours a week is rough but I did what I had to.

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. "Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet." -- Terry Pratchett, Men At Arms.
Here’s the thing: the “expensive- ‘high quality’” items aren’t always built to last forever. Sometimes, the person that bought it just gets lucky. For example, I know someone who made a fortune by running their own company. At their house, however, they had to replace their expensive refrigerator THREE times in the last 5 years. Very true. And we have media shove down our throats the myth, with stories like "look how this elementary school kid started a business that makes over a million dollars a year!" (while conveniently leaving out that their parents were wealthy enough to give their kid tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars in startup money, and had connections to people in legal or business ventures that were able to provide support like getting legal paperwork completed, shipping logistics, and marketing-so the kid basically had an idea like millions of other americans but most people don't have access to the funds and resources required to start the business). They have pushed the "rags to riches" stories constantly, despite (or perhaps because) they are so insanely rare. And ironically, studies found it's actually also hard for rich people (those born into wealthy families) to become poor. Kind of an insult, if you are born into a poor family, you can struggle your entire life and still die poor; but if you are born into wealth you can screw up constantly and still generally be financially well-off. This country is more about connections than hard work, if you want a good paying job your best bet is just to 'network' (though a lot of that comes from parents as well, their connections help set up the ability for their children to make connections. It's not as simple as walking into a business expo and suddenly befriending powerful people-they often won't give you the time of day unless you have some connection to begin with)
All the people saying it’s easy just get a job at McDonald’s or something really have no idea what being poor is like. When you’re *already* poor it makes EVERYTHING harder to do. If you don’t have housing good luck getting access to anything that requires an address (jobs, social security etc.) McDonald’s also has actual requirements for working depending on the franchise owners discretion and you kind of need some form of transit if you can’t afford to live you probably can’t afford a bus pass or a bike. It’s not that getting out of poverty is impossible when you’re at least stable, it’s that getting out of it when you’re already in it stacks all the chips against you and in theoreticals you can’t just give concessions and assume everyone has access to even the most basic of financial mobility tools. It’s simply a broken system perpetuated by the myth of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps(an inherently impossible task) and kept going by the baby boomer generations mentality that if you’re poor then you’re just lazy. Adam's right, The Constitution was intentionally designed to be flawed. There is no perfect government system, so The Constitution was designed to be refined, to grow with the nation. That's why we have amendments.
The problem is that US just considers capitalism all good and socialism all bad,but this isn't so black and white. Both systems have different good and bad parts. The best way would be to take some good parts from both sides to avoid such extreme inequality while also keeping our freedom.
Also socialism does not equal communism. For example, under communism, the means of production is controlled by the state. No one owns property nor their businesses. Under socialism, however, private property exists, and large industries are controlled by the community. Furthermore, socialism is different to democratic socialism, where key services, such as housing, utilities, transit, and healthcare, are managed and funded by the government, whilst consumer goods are managed under a free-market economy. Capitalism is massively flawed in many ways and can lead to systems just as tyrannical as communism. To get the best of both worlds, democratic socialism is definitely the way to go.

Exactly. The study actually found that the correlation between father and son earnings in the US is about 0.4 which is barely above average. This suggests that the US has MORE social mobility that the UK and Italy, two places with higher tax rates then the US. The study also mentioned that you can’t make any policy prescriptions based on the comparison of the 24 countries because only FOUR of the countries were comparable with the US. One of those countries has LESS wage mobility than the US. According to Adam Conover, the US should raise taxes and create a welfare state based on only FOUR data points! Other research by UCLA economics professor Lee Ohanian found that while some of the European countries that raised their top marginal tax rates and corporate tax rates had lower income inequality than the US (only one European country is comparable to the US according to the study Adam Conover cited) the middle class and poor were not better off. The rich simply left the country. This lead to a massive drop in productivity and business formation. Average hours worked per person dropped 40% while the US economy steadily grew. There is a reason why almost all of these countries have taken steps to lower top marginal and corporate tax rates, raising taxes on the rich and redistributing income does not work. Adam Conover deceives his viewers and cherry picks and misinterprets research. Income inequality is a problem but higher taxes aren’t a solution. This show is clearly pushing an agenda.

to give them free college the gov would have to raise taxes on guess who them. Even if you say tax the rich you cant tax the rich for everything and by taxing the rich you stall economic growth.

Poor people should get together, or maybe people should give their couches out to the poor.

A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet."

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Have you ever had a job?
It’s sick.

@Prophetorium so it's a flaw in the American character, then? the current generation of young adults is making less money than their parents at the same age, not buying houses, not getting married/reproducing at the same rates bc they lack financial security, etc. (perhaps BECAUSE they went to college, but that's neither here nor there)
Fun fact:

That sound is not actually the American eagle, but actually the sound of a red tail hawk!
How.......How did you know?
*"Confused screaming"*
well...i do like distortion i guess
The tune of "God Save the Queen" is the same as "America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee)"...pretty sure it was the latter they were going for here.
1:36 get it! It's a pi chart!
Sam: the US constitution is the most perfect legal document the world has ever seen since it’s foundation.
All the other constitutions from Latin America which in their original draft included abolishing slavery: *chuckles*

As a Dane all I can say is "WE ARE NUMBER ONE IN SOMETHING OTHER THAN YOUTH DRINKING"

Yeah but don't ya'll also have those tasty breakfast pastries? I mean, that's something too.
The RUclips channel two cents has a great video on this call "why its more expensive being poor"
"An Apple A Day's Believed To Keep The Dr. Away, BUT It's Been Proven A Burrito A Day Just Keeps EVERYBODY Away"! Gotta add in some Humor( & yes, been Homeless Countless Times Myself ).
With what I have learned form Adam, I have invented a slight alteration to a certain saying: The United States of America, a land of freedom and independence, as long as you got dem dallah dallah bills.
I'm here for Adam's excitement when he hears that Americatown has a "Commie" museum :)
Travis Scott, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Young Thug, Rodwave, and the rest of the rap industry: Are we a joke to you?

0:50 that's not what the source says.
Shhhh! I want free stuff and if that means making stuff up about America then so be it!!
lol as if this guy is even remotely honest about anything
That is you moron
@noless How is that not what the source said? Figure 1 shows the stats he's talking about. Which part are you criticizing?

Explain how a man like Trump got in charge of the pandemic.
Explain how people can get out of medical debt.
Explain how Norway can have subsidized health care, a minimum wage 5 times higher than ours, and STILL be happier than us.
"Out of 24 countries." sounds very cherrypicked, why not just out of all Countries?
I became a lawyer to try to get out. Now I have 200k in debt.
Corey Pingle I know a guy who did something similar. He wasn’t born into a poor family but he did pay for college on his own. He was thousands in debt and couldn’t pay it off with a history degree so he went to law school not because he wanted to but because he had to if he wanted to pay off his loans.
You can take that kind of talk to the filthy commie museum
Now Adam ruined your life 😂

That's literally the point
no one is acknowleging the fact that Adam isnt talking to uncle sam but the physical imbodiment of america?
He's a country human
It’s called the American ‘Dream’ for a reason…
😂i died when he said we could give them free college😂😂cause that'll work
to give them free college the gov would have to raise taxes on guess who them. Even if you say tax the rich you cant tax the rich for everything and by taxing the rich you stall economic growth. The only way to give them free college is called socialism, and we have a history book to see how good socialism works. NAZI= national SOCIALIST german workers party, also the USSR= Union of soviet SOCIALIST republics. Then there is also stuff like venezuela. So we know that socialism works great.
Would you like to go back to the time when you had to pay to go to high school?
