  • The British Rail Class 373 or TGV TMST train is an electric multiple unit that operate Eurostar high speed rail services from London to France and Belgium via the Channel Tunnel, part of the TGV family, it has a smaller cross-section to fit the smaller loading gauge in Britain, was originally able to operate on the UK third rail network and it has extensive fireproofing in case of fire in the tunnel. It is both the second longest-387 metres (1,270 ft)-and second fastest train in regular UK passenger service, operating at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph). It is beaten in both aspects by the Class 374 (E320) which is 400 metres (1,300 ft) long and has a top speed of 320 kilometres per hour (199 mph),though this is never achieved on HS1 in Britain.
    Known as the TransManche Super Train (TMST) or Cross-channel Super Train before entering service in 1993, the train is designated Class 373 under the British TOPS classification system and series 373000 TGV in France. It was built by the French company GEC-Alsthom at its sites in La Rochelle (France), Belfort (France) and Washwood Heath (Britain) and by Brugeoise et Nivelles (BN, now part of Bombardier Transportation) in Bruges (Belgium).
    Since the delivery of the new Class 374 E320 units from Siemens in 2014, refurbished examples of the Class 373 or TGV-TMST sets have been officially dubbed as E300s by Eurostar to distinguish them from the new Velaro fleet.

    I feel in love with this train, it was a train that inspired me being a rail fan. When I discovered it was scrapped, I was shocked. This was one of the trains that got me into these stuff, even though I’ve never seen it, it’s gone. May this train Rest In Peace.

    For all those asking why it was abandoned - i found this in a news article:
    And if you’re wondering why these 373s were abandoned and not reused elsewhere, well, it seems like a few factors were in play. Technology had simply moved on, leaving these 22-year-old trains out of date. It was also more cost efficient to bring in a modern fleet rather than overhaul these existing trains, especially as the replacements had a greater seating capacity, meaning more money over less time. In the end, therefore, many of the 373s were deemed “life-expired.”

    They are completely worn out with rocket mileage and extensive corrosion. Apparently this is due to the atmosphere in the tunnel being highly corrosive. They are not suitable for any other mainline working and have huge power demands. The ones scrapped in the UK go direct from their last service to a proper scrap facility where hopefully they are reduced to their bare metals and recycled. Sadly any form of restoration or heritage working isn't really an option which is a shame as these units were groundbreaking in connecting two capitals separated by the English channel. Why this unit has ended up like this seems to be unexplained but if its their train on their track I suppose they're entitled to do what they like with it. Not good PR though as we all are becoming more environmentally aware

      James Seward-Prior the electronics are 286 based architecture they are badly corroded and pull so much power that they would reduce the amount of trains usable on a section, add to that they were built to initial tunnel regulations means they are a nightmare to service, great trains but no upgradeability and so power hungry they aren’t able to relocate

    Simple, undeniable fact of life; things wear out. The mileage on that thing must be insane after 10+ years! I've also noticed in the comments a lot of people saying it has serious structural rot due to the salty atmosphere it's been operated in for it's entire service life. It's not operable on standard railways (in the U.K.) and anyway, it's not as simple as a few replacement windows and a lick of paint! There's still the structural rot to deal with and that would be a big, expensive, time-consuming undertaking. Sad but true.

    Looking at the virtually intact structure of the carriages that are dry and still full of seating - why isn't this and other trains due to be scrapped used as temporary shelter for the homeless? Somewhere they can take shelter from the elements, such as the recent so-called "Beast from the East". Maybe the buffet car can be used as a soup kitchen? It just seems so wrong to let all this unused potentially useable space fall victim to vandals.

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 6 лет назад +35

      Jinty7109 fan You are thinking the wrong way. This needs to be shredded for scrap.
      Shelters for the homeless can be made from much more suitable materials, 100x cheaper and in much more suitable places eg City centres and not limited to remote sidings with no access.

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 6 лет назад +8

      Jinty7109 fan You are quite perceptive I do like smashing up model railway equipment but my favourite method is treating it like a golf ball and playing full shots with a sand iron. I'm a good golfer and you would be amazed how the engines and carriages shatter into a huge number of pieces when hit at high speed. This is a great way to separate the plastic from copper bearing motors, both of which can then be recycled. I don't throw them out windows though. Also stamping on them with heavy boots is a good way to scrap them.
      However none of that is relavent to your asinine comment that this EMU would make a suitable shelter for homeless people.

    • @MagicTammi
      @MagicTammi 6 лет назад +4

      SteamLocoScrapper lol, I laughed so much, I think Jinty just got owned!

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 6 лет назад +4

      Well Jinty7109 fan, I do get them from fairly cheap sources like boot sales and the like, or even for free, and I do sell copper bearing motors and other metals as scrap. You are probably right though.
      But what price does good entertainment cost? I can spend a whole day enjoying smashing up piles of trains and other toys or electronic goods that I got for say £25 whereas someone else could spend £300 going to an away football match which is really boring or their team loses and they had a crap day by the time they have paid for travel, hotel bills, meals, and tickets.
      So they spend £300 and have a bad time. I spend £25 and have a great one, and I can sell the copper and scrap afterwards. Who is wasting the most money? Or people spend £100's on a bottle of wine which is gone after they drink it. It's all of a question of pleasure and cost benefit.
      Whereas, I still have the scrap to sell :D

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast 6 лет назад +4

      Baa! That's always the same with urbex people and rail fans. Many of them trespass or break and enter themselves to get pictures etc. This is in a deserted siding miles from anywhere. Homeless people need proper facilities, heated, and close to food and medical help if needed.
      These rail fans wanting to make it into a homeless shelter do not have a clue!

      Ha! that will never happen, trying to get high speed rail between Chicago and St. Louis, all new track work, new stations, this has been going on for more than three years now. Plus this route is pretty much single track, how is that going to work. Besides most Amtrak trains are never on time anyway, I live in a small town about 80 miles southwest of Chicago and this line is also shared with freight traffic. The only high speed right now is between Dwight Ill and Pontiac Ill which is only about 20 miles. What a joke!

      1) This information is on the internet anyway - if you really want to find it, you can.
      2) I doubt many people watching this are opportunistic vandals.
      3) People are unlikely to travel all the way to France to vandalize a train. Most of the graffiti will have come from locals.
      4) Some people may vandalize it, but it's a bit selfish to deny people who are passionate about trains to visit this place.
