    A brand new project to the FabCo channel, before we've even finished the first! We're taken on the Allegro after badgering Jonny for months about the Agro and we're finally making some progress.
    In this episode i work on getting the front panel mounted, at least temporarily, so that we can locate the wings and everything inside of the engine bay. The Allegro project looks more and more complete with each episode, still plenty to go at though..
    Many thanks to The Late Brake Show team for the opportunity to collaborate on this fun project!

    Mid 80’s I used to get a lift to work every day from my mate Barry in his green Allegro, inherited I think from his grandad! Thinking back now it was an Inbetweeners moment, classic! Can’t wait to see this car back on the road 🥰

Being a retired engineer l appreciated the use of your explanations in each stage of the build, (and so will many other viewers) the sturdy box sections too to ensure the security and strength of the car and various mounts required! Hell of a job. It's almost a shame that nobody will realise how much effort and thought has gone in to making this car so special when they see a more or less ordinary Allagro going down the road. I 'spose that's the point but, still?

    I've just seen that you have fitted an Escort Mk1 or 2 steering rack to the Allegro. As these were originally fitted in front of the axle line and you have fitted it at the rear the wheels will turn in the opposite direction to the steering wheel input unless you've fitted a left hand drive rack upside down.

    Tidy job, Adam. I would start with gapping the wings to the doors and clamping the bottoms to the sill pinch weld. This would help with the front panel height, which looks like it needs to come up between 1/4 to 3/4 inch. You'd be surprised how much 3mm out vertically on a door/wing gap raises or lowers the front end! Cheers .Leigh.

    When you look at hinging the flip front make a ‘parallelogram’ type hing so you can move the flip front out and possible up as it rises to miss things like the tyres, sump, ground and anything else. Make out of ply or alloy so its easy and cheap to move pivot points to get the correct lift/movement.
    You might find bonnet hings to do the correct ‘lift’ if you are very luck and save you some fab 👍

    It's like 'Project Binky' scaled up a bit and put into hyperdrive. This will probably be n the road this year whereas my great, great grandad watched Project Binky's start - and watching it was a family tradition I will pass on to my son. What do you mean it's finished? It'll never be finished!

    Another great episode but I find myself thinking where's the next one even though I realize that's being unreasonable and these 1st 5 have come out pretty bloody quick or at least that's how I've found them. Really enjoying this build and I do kind of like the idea of what were kind of shitty cars here in NZ in the 70s n 80s are now getting some proper love with so go-fast additions, very cool ;).

    Hey Adam, loving the build and your expertise - if you were to slice the front panel and guards let's say under the headlights and only hinge from that line up, would that enable you to build your safety structure and hinge mounts direct to your frame legs. I know it's more panel work but would hardly be noticeable.
    I'll accept cheques for my great ideas 😃

      Funny in the garage I worked in back then we never called them All Agro. You usually found that it was the cowboy mechanics etc that called them that who used it as an excuse to rip off people with jobs that didnt need doing etc - not just with Allegros but other cars and makes as well. The Allegros we looked after and serviced etc were very reliable cars as was the two we had in our familiy at the same time - my 1980 Allegro 1750 TC Equipe and my brother then mothers 1978 Allegro 1500 LE that were excellent and very reliable cars - then again we looked after and serviced our own cars and didnt have cowboy mechanics anywhere near them.

    I know making an engine low is good for centre of gravity, but it looks like there’s like there’s gonna be 4 inches between the valve cover and the bonnet, and 1 inch of clearance between the sump and the road (leaving supercharger room? Heh heh).
    I would’ve placed the engine higher, stepped the near side frame rail up over the gearbox, and the then made a bolt on brace that passes underneath the gearbox to form a hexagon shape as strong as the straight rail would’ve been.

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 года назад

      If the engine were higher, we’d have compromised driveshaft angles 😃

    • @Jonathan_Doe_
      @Jonathan_Doe_ 2 года назад

      @@FabCoUK I’d take changing CV joints more often over smashing sumps.
      Looks like you’re redoing the front suspension though, so surely you could just set the wishbone mounts higher up on the body, and adjust the top mount positions to correct the castor/camber angles?…
      Then the roll centre would work with a lower ride height and the drive shaft angles would be fine?

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 года назад

      @@Jonathan_Doe_ the wheel still remains fixed in the wheel arch though, no amount of lower arm geometry changes can change where the centre of the wheel is. I agree the sump looks low, but it’s really not. It’ll become more obvious once we see the car on the floor 😃

    • @Jonathan_Doe_
      @Jonathan_Doe_ 2 года назад

      @@FabCoUK If it’s the vertical centreline that’s the issue then would moving the engine straight up really affect massively?

    • @FabCoUK
      @FabCoUK  2 года назад

      @@Jonathan_Doe_ depends how far you want to move it.. like I’ve said, sump clearance isn’t likely to be an issue and if it is, it’s fixable with aftermarket solutions. If you put the engine in the wrong place, and you’re popping/wearing cv’s at max suspension travel, it’s a hell of a lot of work to fix. All just based on my experiences.
