I always wondered why this song received so much hate. To me it is a total masterpiece. Probably too innovative and original for a James Bond song. People prefer more generic Bond songs.
I remember when it was released, only because it was "too electronic" for a james bond song, still one of my fave madonna singles, this song aged soooo well
I agree. I think the fuss may have been that Madonna did not stick with the usual ballad theme songs that are featured in James Bond movies, but rather gave us an upbeat/clubby song instead. I think the song and video conveyed the good- vs-evil theme well, which is what Bond movies are all about. The psychological context--killing the ego--was a brilliant touch.
@@xs8372 number #8 at the billboard hot 100. And picked #1 at the dance club songs and By the way her latest number one in this chart was "I DONT SEARCH I FIND" it picked #1 at the dance club songs. Last year.
Yess. In the latest Instagram life with Diablo, the writer mentions she has truely cone to realise how innovative and ahead of her time Madonna is as an artist. Fuck yeah
The instrumental is heavily underappreciated, especially the vocals she emits in the track. The track's lyrics are hit and miss. All in all, kick-ass tune .
Wow! Impressive Instant (Peter Rauhofer Universal Club Mix) such a masterpiece as well. When you listen to the nearly 10 minute version, it takes you on a musical journey & love the changes throughout the entire mix. Great Taste guy!
One thing you didn't mention is that "Die Another Day" video, produced by Traktor, is still to this day when adjusted for inflation, the second most expensive music video of all time, after Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream". Interestingly, Madonna also holds #3 position with the much, much older "Express Yourself" video AND "Bedtime Story". Also, just something that's driving me a bit crazy (although it's a small thing): Mirwais is not pronounced "Mar-wee", it's closer to "Meer-ways". You can hear it here, where he's being introduced: ruclips.net/video/omL_wXOkbck/видео.html
Nobody ever seems to mention the setting for the fight sequences. Because Die Another Day was the 20th Bond movie, and the anniversary was very much part of the promotional campaign, this video showcases various characters and props from many of the Bond films going back to the beginning. The gallery they are fighting in is full of so many Easter eggs.
I was hoping someone would post this. Derek did seem to notice the Pierce Brosnan for a second. The bringing together of all the old props, museum seems to not register with many people
A big hit in Europe and one of the most expensive videos ever made. I love this song, and the concept of this video. I never get tired of watching it. It’s like a mini movie.
I love how insightful your reviews are! I would recommend “Love Profusion” or “Hollywood” for the next Madonna reaction since they are from the “American Life” album too
Not just Die Another Day, but the entire American Life album is based on Dialectics with references from psychoanalysis and social psychology. Dialectics that is not just a representational theory, but the reality that the theory represents: it is the DUALITY THAT COMPLEMENTS ITSELF (good x evil, courage x fear, strength x weakness, light x shadow, love x hate, equality x difference , etc.). Therefore, Madonna asks Sigmund Freud - the father of psychoanalysis - to analyze her. The fight is internal. She against herself. Her versus the part they played her. She in favor of what she is becoming through movement and action. The song speaks of the fear of life and yet the urge to survive. Death drive and life drive. Mutually complementary and feedback contradictions. A philosophical music involved in the best instruments and mechanisms of EDM at a time when R&B, Hiphop gangsta and new metal dominated. Virtue of the queen of pop.
“What it feels like for a girl “ is such an anthem , too 5 of my favourite songs , I actually love the spanish Version from the “ Drowned World Tour “ among other things because the totally different music arrangements ruclips.net/video/axlNwcRga7Q/видео.html
You need to react next to “What It Feels Like for a Girl” video. It’s very edgy Madonna. Directed by her than husband Guy Ritchie and banned from MTV for being too violent. It’s a MUST see!
Great song! For me Die Another Day Song is a sort of Duran Duran’s A View To a Kill for the 2000’s audiences. The combination of the modern bits with some strings (samplers or not) in the background reminds me that. Madonna made an interesting appearence in the movie, too. Great review!
This is among my favorite Madonna songs. I REALLY REALLY hoped seeing her in this light would have led to some action movie parts. I would have loved to see her play a kick-ass rogue agent or a vampire/demon hunter.
Hi Dereck! Great song and video. Her era with Mirwais was awesome. You should react to her video for Bedtime Story, one of my favorites from her, and kinda forgotten.
So much madonna s videos are interesting stunning and bold ... Frozen ..human nature ...secret ...bedtime story ...nothing really matters ..ghosttown ...and many many others songs ..she s so a legend ..so ahead ...her career is so rich ...rebel heart ..Madame X underrated era for the masses .. but so smart and great too .. take care of you 😽
You should react to the Re Invention tour... The least popular tour of her I think but a complete masterpiece, it is the tour that followed American Life album
@Marvin Morawski most of her other tours are more talked about, this one wasn't as streamed as confessions, BAT, sticky... I wish it was as as known or as streamed as those tours
Small fact : She used to own a synthesizer back in NY her early days when she was starting out but then it got stolen from her apartment so it’s a sound she’s been messing w for years and has mastered it!!!
Dereck, many thanks for this react. I love this title so much and think that her collaborations with Mirways on both Music and American life albums are just brillant.... We can tell she's The Queen in such sophisticated 2000' electro beats.
Madonna's 'Die Another Day' song also touches on Sigmund's Freud's notion of the 'death drive' in all human beings. But instead of Madonna's death drive leading to ultimate self-destruction she subverts the idea of the finality of death into one of freedom, survival and continuity of consciousness. Hence she sings 'Sigmund Freud! Analyse this!' Because she is completely subverting and mocking his patriarchal ideas and limitations in support of a more optimistic feminist revision of the notion of death. We are more than just physical bodies. We are souls with consciousness and even though our bodies will come to an end the soul will transcend and continue on its journey. Trust me - she was into a lot of theoretical and esoteric theory at around this time in the late nineties and early noughties while married to Guy Ritchie!
It was main theme song..the video is homage to the film...the torture is a re-enactment of the opening of the movie..she had a role in the movie as a fencing instructor for bond and there were references to previous films with the cat-blowfeld, the spicked shoe-rosa klebb, you see the bowler hat-odd job and the golden gun-scaramanga, also the gold figure- goldfinger as this was 20th bond film she references previous bond villans/props etc. in video.
Madonna is a very successful movie soundtracks artist : CRAZY FOR YOU (number 1 in the us 1985), LIVE TO TELL (number 1 in 1986), WHOS THAT GIRL (1987 and number 1 ) THIS USED TO BE A PLAYGROUND (1992 and also number 1 ) and BEAUTIFUL STRANGER for the AUSTIN POWER movie (number 19 with only airplay in 1999) so the James Bond producer want Madonna .Madonna always loves the strings in her work and with Mirwais it's a kind of electro and strings mixed .Madonna said that she loves Serge Gainsbourg work (french iconic singer from the 60s to late 80s)and it was all about the frenchies with the American Life era with Mirwais and also Michel Colombier for the strings who worked with the great Serge Gainsbourg back in the day .On AMERICAN LIFE the song EASY RIDE has a lot of beautiful strings by Colombier !Also in 2001 the song DONT TELL ME (huge hits and beautiful video ) was a Mirwais / Colombier collaboration
One of her best !!! And this album Américan is such stunning and bold !! Pur jewel ! Mother and father ...nobody knows me ... nothing fails .. Paradise not for me or Gone on Music Lp 😉 and like it or not and how high on confessions on dance floor !
On the movie the song appears twice, but on the end credits it's on the form of a dance remix that was available on the maxi-single(call them digital EPs today). The song was not available as individual single (there were still no digital singles at the time) so to have you had to buy the 9 tracks maxi-single, the movie OST or the album (all cost almost the same). Probably that helped the song to be Top selling dance single in US in both 2002 and 2003 (the song was released in late October 2002 and as was not available in any other format). This was the first single from "American Life" album. The "American Life" song was released in April 2003 and was also only available as maxi-single/EP or on the Album (in US). In countries like Canada, Italy or Spain there was a 2 track CD-single available for both "Die Another Day" and "American Life" singles making the songs peak much higher on the charts as those were price as just $2.99 (the EP was priced as $10.99)
Love this reaction bro!!! I remember when this song came out we were so obsessed about the video and her look , we were wonder what's next Madonna? and we danced that remix at the infamous "COLOSSEUM NIGHTCLUB" back at the day in Seyreville New Jersey every f***** Thursday night (gay night)🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh Gosh!!!! What a great time.....hahahahaha... I was 19.😜
Despite all her long time career and successes, I still think Madonna is THE most underrated artist of the last 5 decades or so. Maybe even EVER. She and her artistry confuses people over the years, and often misunderstood, as a result. I cannot think of another artist who is more of substance. And yet her intentions and her social commentaries over the years are not paid enough attention to, by the general public.
the tatoo means a lot but, its 72 names of god kabbalistic Pronounced: Lamed Aleph Vav Meaning: Banishes the remnants of evil and inflated ego. Meditation: The light of this name dispels negative energy and cleanses my environment
The three Hebrew letters on the electric chair are L A V / Lamed Aleph Vav (read from right to left, the L is on the right side). It’s one of the 72 names of God in medieval Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah). These names are not the traditional ones taken directly from the bible or from standard rabbinical teaching, but were created by combining the letters of 3 verses from Exodus 14 which follow each other (verses 19-21) and in Hebrew all have 72 letters. In these verses the presence of God through his angel, cloud and fire protects the Israelites from the mighty Egyptian army by moving in between the two camps. The L A V combination is said to express the divine purifying of spaces, eliminating of ego and banishing of evil.

Remembered my uncle picking up the Die Another Day film and playing the music video on PS2 back in early 2003. Hate it or like it, you cannot deny that the instrumental Madonna produced is underappreciated; hence ahead of its time for the mainstream EDM scene. Hooked and allured as 6 yr old me made me delve into electronic music. Weirdly, the music video was cool. As for the James Bond theme, I understand why many Bond fans ( in that time ) hated this theme song. Oh and yeah, Die Another Day film is terrible. In my opinion, that is the only credit I commend for this track. The lyrics are not good.
Considered by most James Bond fans to be the worst Bond theme ever recorded. In fact it came bottom in a poll last year to determine the favourite Jame Bond theme of all time.
Most James Bond fans wanted something Shirley Bassey-esque (after all, she's in the top ten of Bond themes from that poll three times); however, the Bond Producers wanted her after listening to "Power of Goodbye" from the Ray of Light album - very much an electronica track. They wanted her for "The World is Not Enough" but she wasn't available at the time, and so she was brought in for the next film's track. They knew what they were getting. Wasn't that poll conducted by the "Classic FM" radio channel, which is classical music-based? No surprise then that they didn't "get" what she was trying to do. Sometimes you need to change gear and do something different. Duran Duran's song might also have been a departure at the time, and that's well regarded now.
It s incredible. You no nothing about the Mirwais ‘ productions ???? You seem to be surprise but I hope you know this come from the American life album .... and this James Bond anthem résumé perfectly the Mirwais ‘touch . Your way to analyse are so simplistic... you re ok but you need to have some solid bases . And excuse me for my English . I m French .

Might of been hated but it still went #1 on billboard and is her last single to do so. So still a very big accomplishment for this song
I think OS one of the Best songs of Madonna and soundtracks x a Bond movie
@@xs8372 number #8 at the billboard hot 100.

A friend of mine (Sophia Crawford) was actually Madonna's stunt double in this video.
I saw her in U.S. Seals II (2001). She was great there
She looks like Madonna so much here it’s wild
So Madonna paved the way for the Electronica/EDM sound that of 2009-2011, she's ahead by half a decade with this song.
She might have made it more mainstream but it was already HUGE way before this song.
Die Another Day is my second favorite Madonna song of the 2000-2009 decade. I don't get why it got so much criticism. It was way ahead of its time.
Queen of pop. IT was about time. You reacted to madonna again. We have been wating

This was a Making of the Video on MTV back when it was released. And when it was released, this was her 44th video/song she had released to date
One of the best bond song & video, coz the video itself is so physically exhausting with all the action going on.

Considered by most James Bond fans to be the worst Bond theme ever recorded. In fact it came bottom in a poll last year to determine the favourite Jame Bond theme of all time.
should see now where this song lands ,since Billie Eilish bond song charted low.
I’m a huge Bond fan since the 70’s and I think Writings on the Wall (from Spectre) the worst 007 song ever. And it won an Oscar!!!!!!! 🤮
