  • A couple of extracts from a peal, rung in November 2018, on this pretty light eight, installed in 2012 thanks to a project led by Ashley Fortey. The bells were cast by Whitechapel in 2011, and hung by Nicholson. Whilst currently rung from the ground floor, there are plans to install a ringing gallery, to make space for a kitchen and toilet underneath - these plans are yet to materialise.
Until the recent project, the tower contained a long-unringable 4 bells, hung in a two-tier oak frame. Bells 1-3 date from 1671, and were cast by John Martin of Worcester. The tenor was cast by John Finch of Hereford in 1636. These bells have rehung “dead” in the old frame (above the new eight), and can be chimed.
The most famous Yarkhill resident, to bellringers at least, was Fabian Stedman, whose father was rector here from 1625-1671. Fabian was baptised in the church on 7th December 1640, and it is possible he learnt to ring on the old 4 bells here. Fabian was apprenticed to master-printer Daniel Pakeman in London at the age of 15, and it is there he made a name for himself as a ringer. In 1668, he published "Tintinnalogia", written by Richard Duckworth, which was the first ever book about the art of change ringing. He later wrote “Campanalogia” in 1677. Stedman is of course best known for “Stedman’s Principle” - which remains one of the most rung and enjoyed methods today. He was Master of the College Youths in 1682, and died in 1713, being buried in St Andrew Undershaft, London.
The village of Yarkhill is Anglo-Saxon in origin; it is thought the current name dates from around 1066, when the land was held by a Knight called “Arkell”. It remains a small and dispersed parish. The church was extensively restored in 1862; the tower dates from the 13th century.
    Tenor 4-1-27 in D
