  • Garway Church (Saint Michaels Church) and Dovecot were built by the Knight Templars in the twelth century; the dovecote was rebuilt by the Knights of Saint John later and the Church extended too. Filmed St Michaels Church in Garway, Hereford in August 2021.
St Michael's Church in the Herefordshire village of Garway is an intriguing 13th century building on a rectangular plan, created from an earlier 12th century round church built by the Knights Templar. St Michael's is composed of a nave, chancel, and south chapel, joined to a detached 70 foot high tower by a 17th century passage.
The chancel arch of the round Templar church was used as the chancel arch for the 13th century building. The rounded foundations of the earlier Templar church were uncovered by excavations in the 20th century, and can be viewed to the north of the current nave.
The Templars built their churches on a circular foundation, in emulation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Garway has the only visible circular nave remaining in England. At the time of its foundation Garway was the most powerful Templar church in the Welsh Marches.
The exterior walls of the nave and chancel are notable for an intriguing collection of mason's marks, including a Maltese cross, a swastika, the Lamb of God, a Patriarchal Cross, Cross Fourchee, a winged dragon, and a Dextra Dei, or Hand of God, emerging from a cloud.
The most striking aspect of the interior is the chancel arch. This is of three orders. The outer order is the traditional Norman chevron, the inner made with surprisingly Moorish-style voussoirs (wedge-shaped stones). This Oriental-style design was a result of the Templar contact with Eastern design and architectural style in the Holy Land.
Oriental style aside, the most immediately obvious point of interest is a striking Green Man; a figure of a grinning human head with foliage emerging from its mouth. The Green Man was a common medieval motif, probably a remnant of much earlier pagan custom, but it is rare to find an example so wonderfully preserved as the one at Garway.
An arcade of two bays leads to the chancel, where a 13th century piscina is set into the wall. The head of the piscina has been carved with an intriguing set of markings, including a fish and snake (or eel) flanking a chalice and wafer symbol. A similar serpent symbol is cut into one side of the simple octagonal font.
The serpent in common medieval Christian use was a negative symbol, but in this context it is probably used as a positive symbol; in the Far East the serpent was a symbol of healing, and its use here may relate to the Templar dedication to healing.
This dovecot at Church Farm in Garway is thought to be the finest medieval example in England. It contains 666 L-shaped doveholes and is thought to date from 1326. It was built for the Knights Hospitallers and is likely to have replaced an earlier dovecot from the time of the Knights Templar. Inside view of the roof of the medieval dovecot at Church Farm, Garway. The doves would have entered the dovecot via the cupula at the top of the dovecot.
The sacred well was used by the Templars and is the most probaly the reason why the village of Garway is situated where it is.

Beautiful video, thanks. The Templars were closely associated with first the Cistercians and then the Tironensian order, mostly in Scotland. The Tironensians were the most sympathetic to Celtic Christianity and thus the green man etc. features prominently in their later work e.g. Rosslyn Chapel. The Tironensian's patron was Rotrou II, Count of Perche, who was closely associated with several Templar French grand masters, and who worked with the early Templars to move the "grail" to the protection of the Tironensians in Scotland circa 1170, just after the death of Thomas Becket.
The serpent is associated with both healing (the 13th zodiac sign of Ophiuchus, with Asclepius the snake handler being the god of healing) and wisdom. The serpent in this sense represents desire (for wisdom, wealth, power etc.) being trapped within the stone (grail) as a test of character. By choosing the servant heart (Jesus and the cross) over the serpent king (taking their oath on the stone) one gets to experience the majesty of the divine. In rejecting desire, everything is given.

Thank you for the informative comment: very interesting. Bernard of Clairvaux, the spiritual father of the Templar’s, wrote against the grotesque adornments of church’s and cathedrals that were so common in the Middle Ages. Many Templar churches around the world are very simple without the curious carvings. Here at Garway , it’s very difficult to see what was added by the Hospitallers , who took over the church after the Templar’s were dissolved. All adds to the intrigue of the legendary Knights Templar’s ! Have a great day!

The 'Green Man' has no connection to 'Celtic Christianity' - it's a Norman 'Romanesque' introduction.
And its often prominent location within churches and cathedrals clearly shows that it was approved of by the Church authorities.

Hi Kelly, thank you very much for the comment. Templar symbolism and numerology are complex subjects and the fields are a minefield in trying to separate the fantastical from the meaningful study. I actually started my reading about the Templars with Malcom Barbers two books, which steer clear of the symbology. I also read most of the medieval chronicles concerning the Templars, such as ‘the Templar of tyre’ etc.. I know there are numerous websites concerning Templar symbolism and numerology too which are very interesting. It’s a fascinating subject and growing academic field. I too would like to know a good book on the subject!!! Have a great day!!!

Thanks for the comment! I am answering you from my other nature account. Sorry for the confusion. You can see the Dovecote from the churchyard, but unfortunately it is in private land. Right next to the church graveyard. I think there is someone who offers private tours there including the dovecote! Thank you very much for the comment!!!!

@@sacredstone1481 is an amazing place I have spent a long time at this place. I am concerned people believe that the knights templar or sacred places are work of the devil. is this something that's has been conditioned who says 666 is not something the opposite your only believing what you have been conditioned too. we where not alive at this time so lets be respectful to those who built this amazing place and king Solomon's temple in Israel. I believe good and evil is in us all equilibrium there's never been a devil or opposite. there's yin and yang in all living organisms. My great great grand father was a puritan knights templar very clever man kindest I've ever met definitely not the devil. Everyone is entitled to there own opinion but fear mongering on topics you have no real facts on just makes you look very very unintelligent and your ruining the reputation of one of the most cherished special places we have left that the knights templar left for us. I'm sure there was good and bad people in all walks of life I'm sure you have not spent your entire life being only ever of light. The dovecot is symbolic and the symbolism is incredible. Have you spent one day at Garway or are you just someone who writes negative statements everyday as that's also dark sorry but true. The knights templars did not start the wars. You have no idea what they where protecting but if you did you would say the opposite. Maybe look into instead of reading a book and believing everything a book says do 6 yrs of research and come back and tell me what you have said is true as you will find that actually that was not what they had been about or work towards anyhows. Energy you guys are missing out as this place is special.

Has got a different kind of vibe, hard to really tell as the Knights Hospitaller took over the church after the Pope dissolved the Templars. They rebuilt the dovecote with 666 boxes: not sure if the original Templar dovecote had 666 boxes as well! But it seems to suggest the Hospitaller knights and the Pope at that time were questionable. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!!!

@@stephaniemanning3439 thank you for your comment. I don’t believe I personally did connect 666 to the devil in this video. Just mentioned that the dovecote has 666 boxes. The association of 666 to the devil and the beast of the end of days is found in revelation. The last book of the bible. Personally I don’t believe the Templar Knights were occultists and that the French Jing and the Pope are responsible for the false accusations. Driven by their greed. Have a nice day
