Imagine laying in bed doing Algebra homework listening to your new Undertow album. The last track ends but you still doing homework. You look over at your player and it’s keeps adding track number after track number til it reaches 69 and this plays. Freaked the shit out of me being 15 yes old
Same thing for me only I was 18 and doing an art project. Right there with you buddy. "...and now red was your color." I was mesmerized by this and listened to it over and over.
I thought my pos cd player was broken... and then magic happened!! Remember when hidden tracks were a true gift 🎁 now they're just a thing of the past...
@@tobyroberts7796 It's true, you can't use the album as part of the experience much anymore since everyone downloads. I appreciate the convenience of downloads but if the album is available I always get it.
So... This is the last song on Undertow. But. It's not just as simple as being song # 10. After "Flood" ends, the CD cycles from song 9, all the way up to song # 69. A little story about my history with the song. This was actually the first TOOL album I ever heard. I was young, and was at a party at a friends house. A couple of us decided to enjoy a couple sugar cubes of acid. The CD ended (or so we thought) and we were laying in the basement on the cold floor staring at the duct work on the ceiling. Disgustipated begins playing... We hear axe chops, and sheep in the background. No clue that it was in-fact a song. Imagine where our minds all went simultaneously. It was an incredible experience. Certainly one I will never forget. Spoken word at the end: *"It was daylight when you woke up in your ditch You looked up at your sky then That made blue be your color, you had your knife there with you too When you stood up there was goo all over your clothes Your hands were sticky You wiped them on your grass, so now your color was green Oh Lord, why did everything always have to keep changing like this You were already getting nervous again Your head hurt and it rang when you stood up Your head was almost empty It always hurt you when you woke up like this You crawled up out of your ditch onto your gravel road and began to walk Waiting for the rest of your mind to come back to you You can see the car parked far down the road and you walked toward it If God is our Father, you thought, then Satan must be our cousin Why didn't anyone else understand these important things? You got to your car and tried all the doors They were locked. it was a red car and it was new There was an expensive leather camera case laying on the seat Out across your field, you could see two tiny people walking by your woods You began to walk towards them Now red was your color and, of course Those little people out there were yours too"*
A lot of the strange sounds they made for this song is from destroying a grand piano with sledgehammers and shooting it with a shotgun. In the parking area at a recording studio. There is video footage you can find of it.
“This can’t be entertaining for the Trash Talkers” - I seriously skipped the song to get to the crickets just to see y’all react to them... entertainment! Lol
Yes, Merkaba is a must. It's another masterful piece of work by Tool. Danny's drumming insane as usual. It's on the Salival album. You won't regret it. You guys rock
Flood is the previous song, but one version of the CD had 59 one-second tracks between them, with Disgustipated as the 69th track. They were smashing the piano with assorted-sized sledgehammers.
I cannot wait to see this one and agree with everybody else. How y’all gonna react to 06:45 - 13:45 Being literal crickets.... And who the hell dislike this already To me the ending part sounds like somebody just killed somebody and is about to kill two more people

Anyone else see this as Maynard's response to vegetarianism? As he is king of the tongue in cheek, passive aggressive criticism of stuff like that. I could see this being his response to someone being pushy about their beliefs. And he mixed it with his disdain for religion at the time as they are both just a belief system. The sheep being twofold, livestock grouped together for consumption and a metaphor for people/tribes of zealots who beLIEve their way is the right way, the only way. And the carrots* reminding them they are not/cannot be exempt from nature. It also touches on the central theme of Darwinian evolutionary theory. "The universe is hostile, so impersonal, devour to survive so it is, so it's always been." Same sentiment. Also they used the industrial beat to add to the theme that this happens over and over. Life feeds on life, rinse and repeat. *Carrots are supposedly good for eyesight and a rabbits favorite food. If carrots have a conscious since they are a living thing harvest time is their holocaust. Let the rabbits wear glasses kinda shows the hypocrisy of people saying we shouldn't eat animals. We eat animals, animals eat plants, this is necessary. Etc, you should get it. Since the 70s, experiments have shown that vegetation responds just as every other living organism, including with fear, and now in later times that there is an entire infrastructure connecting root systems of all types together in symbiosis, with the occasional parasitic intrusion. So, it is true that plants have feelings too...they just can't communicate to us their feelings in an easily perceived way. I believe the reason most people who have chosen a vegetarian lifestyle have not done so as a strictly dietary health reason, but because they see eating meat as cruelty to animals. Sorry vegetarians of all degrees, you're being just as cruel to the vegetables you slice, dice, and grind ferociously to subsist. Guess the only thing left to do is stop eating and die of starvation to not be cruel to anything except your family. I am weeping my sarcastic sorrow.
No. You're looking into it way too hard. It's just art. Just listen with your body not your mind. The spiritual downloads come through that way. Not trying to psychoanalyze every little thing. Get into the body. Experience the meaning through your blood and veins and you become much more connected to the meaning than by trying to mentalize it all.
Back in the "CD player" days, your player would skip through all the way to track 69, one at a time. And then it would play this. What absolute brain candy it all is.
Originally, the Undertow album was supposed to have a Led Zeppelin cover song called “No Quarter “. However, when the record label was made aware of this they told Tool they weren’t getting paid for 9 songs and a cover. They wanted 10 original songs. Since they only had 9 songs ready at the time of recording. Tool added this “song” to replace the cover. They later released the cover on the Salival box set.
“Merkaba” was an interlude jam they would play live in the ‘97-‘98 Aenima days that lead into Sober. It’s on the Salival collection. It’s actually kind of reminiscent of this track. Definitely check it out. As for this track, the shotgun is a real shotgun Adam shot into an old piano. Makes an amazing sound. Also, just throwing this out there: on the original album produced on CD, the track for Disgustipated was actually track 69, which is also roughly the length of the album itself. 10-68 were silent one second tracks. You say troll or genius? Why not both?
"Dude this is creepy"! Lol. I was 13yrs old, in an old shed, with one candle burning in the middle... Listening to this shit. It freaked me TF out, but I loved it more than anything in life!
This is what i heard and believe: Tool used this song to troll the hippies at some hippie fest that tool played at. Its bassically saying to the hippies "shut the f**k up, death is inevitable in everything (refering to vegitarians and their meat is murder belief) ," (including plants ie:the carrots have a life and a soul, damn you, let the rabbits wear glasses, save our brothers, can i get an amen, can i get a haleluja......thank you jesus)! You guys really need to listen to all of tool's stuff, the lyrics can be pretty mind blowing. It's like a journey when listened to in the right frame of mind. Like the album 10,000 days, the album name is how long maynard's mother suffered from cancer before the cancer took her, and from the lyrics, Maynard loves her very much and was very close to her.
So one day my kids, I think they were 3 and 6 at the time, were too quiet. So I go looking for them and find them in the bedroom, playing with toys and whisper singing "this. is. necessary." I just backed out of the room.
The shots are made by maynard with a shotgun vs. a piano, they destroyed 2 pianos in the making of this song, the weird noises is Danny and Adam pulling and cutting strings of the piano and also hitting it with a axe.
I think the poem at the end is from the perspective of a serial killer. In the studio video from these sessions, you can hear them talk about something like that. Also interesting is that it's from the second person perspective. You don't hear a lot of stories told like that.
Understand how much of a pain in the ass this song was during the days of CDs. If I remember right, this is track 69, which made playing this disc on random was frustrating.
Back in our day young fellas, we had hidden tracks on CD's. After "Flood" (song #9), the CD would automatically skip to song #69 track after track 10-68. Then we hear this shit. I was 13, fell asleep listening to Tool, and woke up to this "song". Kinda freaky.
For TOOL, merkaba is a looooooong very awesome live intro to Sober. Merkaba is old hebrew mer-ka-ba and basically means vehicle of ascension. I have always had a licence plate with "MERKABA" on it on one of my vehicles. from a more detailed definition "Merkabah/Merkavah mysticism is a school of early Jewish mysticism, c. 100 BCE - 1000 CE, centered on visions such as those found in the Book of Ezekiel chapter 1, or in the heikhalot literature, concerning stories of ascents to the heavenly palaces and the Throne of God"

The spoken part at the end was a answering machine message left by maynards landlord at the time "bill the landlord" I always felt like it came from the perspective & inner works of a serial killer they have that psychopathic mindframe where everything belongs to them etc he has a knife & goo(blood) on his clothes from a previous murder from the night before im guessing & the 2 people he sees walking in the field are his next victims plus tool shot up a bunch of old pianos for this song & maynard shot up a piano with a shotgun too

As soon as saw that this was going to be done I knew it was going to be good, this was funny as hell, I’ve even fallen asleep to this album and woke to “you look up to your sky, this made blue your color” lol
Well fuck that was different 😳
God I haven’t heard this shit in awhile. Solid stuff. There’s a video of Maynard shooting the piano with a shotgun in the studio

Your guys' FACES!! So excellent!!!
Welcome to Tool.
This is necessary
You guys were right, EPs to LPs is like special bonus features on a blu ray, there to extend the long play
A lot of the music is made from samples they made striking and breaking an old piano on the studio loading dock. They also shot a shotgun a few times 😂
The "chch bang" sound you hear repeatedly at -18:20 ish is actually audio from maynard cocking and shooting a shotgun, no cap. Crazy shit lol
Yup, the more ya know
Maynard's got a strange sense of humor.
8:38 the moment you realize "Holy shit they did it again"

Maynerd says it's just music. He's glad you enjoy it
