- Heyo! This is a topic I haven't really seen discussed. Manga becoming shorter and shorter in general. All of the new hit series aren't lasting as long as they should. I hope this is enjoyable and I am interested in what anyone else thinks about this. If your reading this go plus ultra on that like button. Thanks have a great day.

Thanks everyone for all the love!! This video is way bigger than I ever thought it would be. I had 80 subscribes before I posted this. You guys are awesome seriously thank you!! And yes, I have read Naruto and One Piece!!!!!! And most of the manga I put on screen lol.

So you gained a new subscriber, I feel like we have similar taste and you know more anime/manga. Thank you!
I think Araki had the right idea. Creating Parts with individual, self-contained stories could be a smart way for a smart way to not be stuck doing the same thing forever while exploring the same universe.
Straight up! He can draw everything hes ever wanted, and tell any kind of story he wants. He said he would get bored drawing the same thing forever in some random interview lol
@@TheBeesSteeze Feel like Fujimotos approach is an interesting as well. Not as radical as Araki just entirely changing his entire cast and location every part, but I think him just changing the main character and making his former lead more of a deuteragonist instead was quite a brave and unexpected move that really keeps things unpredictable and fresh. I mean, there is so much hype around every information about whats going on in Denjis life right now and for us to get to see Nayuta which wouldn't have happened if he was still the MC, because we would have gotten this information just immediately.
There is the facilitation, but there is also the aspect of him liking to tell the story that way.
@@TheBeesSteeze but when you do that, it makes continuity less important
Thats bassiclly one piece since every island is like a part, but its not as self contained as chainsaw man
I think that's a good thing. Most Mangaka don't have everything figured out from the beginning and make lots of stuff up as they go. So, the longer the story the higher the chance it will go down in quality. Being a mangaka is also very stressful. Imagine working on one manga for 10 years. The pressure to keep the quality up and satisfy the readers so they don't drop the series has to be immense. And you obviously don't want your work to be cancelled.
This was a great comment!! And for real the mangaka life has to be so stressful. In the end having shorter manga is better for everyone
I think something else really important to note is that it is harder to keep up a satisfying story the longer things go on. Then again being too short sometimes is a detriment to the story as you can’t get properly attached to the characters or story and it doesn’t hold as much weight. I think that demon slayer is a good length. I think you should be able to tell a complete story with 50 to 100 episodes anything longer then that is usually excessive (unless you are one piece). This isn’t just a problem to manga if you know what the wheel of time is you could cut out books 4-10 and you would probably enjoy the series more then if you read them. They are really just filler for the most part to pad out the story. The only reason why books 11-14 are better is because the original author died and the new author who took over and was the old editor was actually a significantly better writer then the guy who wrote the series originally (not that the guy who wrote the series was bad).
It depends on what the mangaka wants. A story like one piece won't benefit from having under 500 or so chapters,a story like Attack on Titan won't benefit from having 500 plus chapters. It just comes down to what a mangaka wants and what kind of story they're writing, people act like stories being short is a good thing but that's not true in alot of cases and the opposite can be said also. So even tho some people might look at this as a good thing but in reality it might be the end for stories like one piece or any stories that run very long (Obviously I doubt that Will happen).
Again it just depends on the situation,I feel like my whole comment just repeats the same shit over and over again lol
I also think it depends on the type of story, for example, one piece would be less satisfying if it was significantly shorter.
Bro described Naruto Shippuden
I think the length of chainsaw man works very well because of how fast paced and how it conveys the stakes and intensity perfectly
Perfect little arcs makes it easy to skip so that the better arcs get animated quicker. Only 12 weeks for the boring introduction arc in chainsawman, we finally getting the bomb arc next which is what we've been waiting for.

I think it has to do more with the health of the authors - way too many have serious health problems due to the aggressive release schedule.

definitely something worth considering, but they're making it count while they got it.
as an industry it should be something considered, like an apprentice inheriting the series continuity should the inevitable happen. at least till conclusion and not draw it out unnecessarily.
No, they're not making these decisions because they care about the health of the authors, it's more so on how the health of the authors influence the continuity of the manga and how this affect sales. It's saddly not an industry that ever cared about it's workers. There are editors who are good people, but there's only so much they can do
I’m pretty sure the DS author had to wrap up the series due to family issues, all the hashira were supposed to get their own arc (iirc)

I think one of the reasons manga will be shorter now and in the future is that the death of Kentaro Miura sent a scare through the industry since Berserk is unfinished. Many authors will want to make sure they can finish the manga they are writing. Plus writing one series for so long can be pretty taxing for creativity and drive.
Yeah and I'm still greatly Kentaro Miura assistants are continuing his work. Overall though I do think Mangaka need to either continue doing short stories.
No they have been doing that to authors way before his death. I mean look at bleach and so many other story’s where the author had to just say fuck it and end the story in a subpar way
I think that this is certainly a big reason. Miura's death was unthinkable for a lot of people and spooked the industry a great deal.
@@jessicar3291not so sure about that. There’s been other deaths in both the manga AND ln industry. People only mentioned Berserk because it has a higher popularity.
Vast majority of shonen manga are relatively decent sized adventure manga.it’s just that the long running battle shonen are the ultra popular series. But now shonen mangaka have shown that they can produce an Uber popular battle manga without being forced to extend it
I like it because there's less chance that the manga feels like it keeps dragging on and on to the point you have no idea what's even going on. This was extremely apparent with Naruto's final arc. One thing I'm gonna miss is that because these old manga have been with us for such a long time, we develop an attachment with the world and characters like no modern manga can do. I still remember when Naruto ended, really felt like there was a hole that was formed within me for months.
It also makes it easier to get into a series if you haven't followed it from the start or lost touch some times. Like, I would love to read One Piece but its just so long, that I lose motivation to really get back into it.
@@shizachan8421I agree plus they can just go through those series quicker without worrying about length
Naruto pacing was perfect. The only cons i think madara wasnt defeated properly and sasuke fight is too forced. Other than that its perfect
@@jojoenathan na it definitely had its fair share of problems
Something you didn’t mention that I think is a large driving factor: if you can wrap up the manga faster than the story is complete for the anime sooner and is easier to make an anime for.
Both animes of HxH and the first anime of Full Metal Alchemist are examples where the anime out paced the manga in story and just had to stop. You can avoid that by having a tighter story that is ready to adapt in full a lot sooner.
yeah theres too many series nowadays that its not feasible to give everyone an anime,, especially not a long running one. being complete and short allows an anime to be seasonal which helps itschances
mangakas, in fact, don't care about their series having an anime often. It's a neat addition, but their work is manga, animes are simply adaptations of the the same story with additional differences that doesn't change the epilogue. Just like Harry Potter is mainly books, movies are just much more approachable medium to masses
To be fair FMA wasn't that long, the anime producers were just impatient and wanted to cash in as soon as possible
Shorter manga don't drag out the story. They're more concise and faster paced. It's definitely because of the change of how people view entertainment these days. People have less attention span and generally want something that gets into the true heart of the story without dragging out a weird subplot or long fight scene.
I have way more of an attachment to longer running series like Bleach because I grew up with the series. Old series were long and had time to grow on me. New manga are more fast paced and I get less emotional attachment to the characters in new manga.
Tokyo revengers was short but still draged out
I think shorter stories is the sign of good writing. Cause characters doesnt necessarily need long development arcs and making it shorter but still remain good plot and fleshed out characters is great for all sides. I doesnt think it has to do with shorter attention span. long shonen jump series can be overwhelming with 400+ chapters and only main characters getting developed and all other side characters are just there but we still get attached to them.
If only we could be so lucky to get an ending to Hunter x Hunter & an anime continuation.
we probably will. They have a system that seems to be working for now to continue writing with good assistance. And they are going to blast out some chapters to complete a new whole book to publish. They will finish the current arc soon. Its been so long since the 2011 anime, but its maybe possible to pull together talent when it does conclude(I think its possible in the next 5 years) to then do a new anime from scratch, yes for a third time lol. Wishful thinking perhaps, but if this work pace keeps going, its possible.
@@differentlyabledmuslimjewi4475 bro what. i thought it was confirmed that they will get a new season so whats going on now bru??

We probably won't get long series authors like Toriyama, Kishimoto, who didn't plan on making long series and famously made things up as they went on, but I hope we get long series authors like Oda, who had the story's end even before publishing the series, and its story would not be as good if it were short.
There's no "ever again" the trends can always change, there is no absolute when it comes to that kind of business.
I think what's happening is that Jump realised that people are getting tired of long running manga and notice more and more when the lenght is forced, so they are just following the general trend, but who knows maybe in 5 years the public will get tired of too short stories and ask for something longer again.
True, the "ever again" is just for the titles sake.
I hope so, I usually enjoy longer series more than shorter ones because I feel more invested in them
I disagree, mostly because I prefer the longer series but yea the trend is definitely changing and I can see why others prefer short series’s
Short series is both a blessing and a curse. The short lenght usually means a tighter and better story, but that's just all the more a reason why you want more of it lol
If you like long manga, I DEFINITELY recommend Hajime no Ippo which is currently longest ongoing shounen manga at 136 volumes and 1407 chapters. Honestly, it's some of the best fiction in terms of characters and fights I've read despite its size, and I feel like the mangaka can it extend for another 10 years without it feeling too stale.

I think a big reason is the popularity of anime, which brings in new manga fans. And it’s a lot harder to watch 500 episodes mid animation than 24 episodes of straight heat.
I prefer grand stories that takes its time to expand on things even more. So, I am a bit disappointed but I also think that there will be a grand story somewhere in the future.

it's the damn pressure from the publication companies, some series really get ruined because of these greedy mfs
So many good, fun series get canceled for no reason. I feel like new manga have to have a clear ending in mind before they publish because they could get axed at any time
@@TheBeesSteeze frrr tho I agree brother hell I'd go so far as to say "plan out the entire story" or at least work on the idea for a few years (like Oda did for OP)
I think part of the reason one piece can go on for so long is because every arc is different .
They have different ideas and characters and the world is huge so it isn’t just confined to just Japan or one country
I think that and also how oda had a lot of the series planned out from the beginning contributed to it going for so long
one piece is a masterpiece tbh
No it's because one piece is actually good
Ay yo! What about Hajime no Ippo!? That's got over 14 hundred chapters and STILL going with no end in sight. Not unless the author just straight up kills MC or passes away himself. He's been writing it for something like 30+ years by this point. Anyway, glad I came across this vid. It added a pretty cool perspective to how I look at a shorter series. Thanks!
Actually, I should have scrolled further. Someone has already said something about it.
i def noticed that recent series tend to be a lot shorter and it's 100% bc new gen fans have such a short attention span. it's definitely a preference thing but i also think that it depends on the mangakas skill too. for me prev gen had more mangaka who were also good story writers and better at telling longer stories, working towards amazing pay-offs instead of fast paced quick satisfaction.
the generation of long series we had in the 90s-2000s were not only bangers but became literally part of our everyday lives for such long times that at that point the emotional attachment is imo incomparable to most of what new gen fast paced shorter series can achieve. i obviously didn't grow out of this medium because i still love the new stuff that comes out, but i do tend to think a lot about how even though series like chainsawman just had such a banger anime i lost my mind over it while watching... it still lost to hype i felt when bleach tybw dropped. and that to me was the perfect example how the old type longer bangers that stayed with you for years can easily have the edge over recent ones simply because the emotional attachment levels are incomparable.
on a side note: imo one piece is its own type of outlier because while it's medium is manga the story itself is a fantasy epic. it's a shounen in most all ways but when it comes to the story-telling it is without a doubt a fantasy epic on a grand scale. which is why i always feel like it gets treated unfairly by ppl who complain about the length. it's as if the wheel of time was told chapter by chapter on a weekly bases. a fantasy epic will never be compact and commitment-free.
while i mostly agree with you (and love the points you brought up), i feel like some of our older manga that extended years upon years lost some of its hard hitting moments being washed away by filler and unnecessary length. i like to think that a lot of manga now are trying to leave certain impacts on us and not overstay its welcome. it leaves you longing for more. there's plenty of anime/manga that reside outside of this example, but i kind of like thinking like this as opposed to "new generation can't keep up due to low attention span." sometimes it's more impactful to drop shorter bangers instead of overstaying your welcome. as much as i loved growing up with naruto, i definitely remember hating the lack of meaningful content due to ages of filler while i waited for the next major arc to start (also why i preferred the manga). But one piece has almost NO filler and it's still amazing if that's your style. the fact that demon slayer is already closer to coming to and end vs from where it started is crazy to me, but it's still a great anime in this newer age. A hard challenge is just for authors to stay with its readers/watchers and not drop it when expounding on other parts of its story.
@@groovydolph i guess we have to put the things on the right boxes there's certain types of stories and mangakas tailed for longer stories and other ones for shorter stories and we could be arguing about it all day without ever getting to a conclusion. One of my favourite manga are kingdom and One Piece both long af but on the other hand i also enjoyed samurai champloo, cowboy Bebop or steins gate very much. The cons of a longer story rely mainly on the bigger commitment thus leading to less audience maybe due to attention span or not it means less money on the publishers accounts, personally i would love to have a dozen more stories with 800+ chapters if they where as good as one piece or kingdom (if u know one please tell me) but in reality shorter stories are much more profitable thus having much more support from the big producers, i think u can get really close to some characters in those shorter stories like spike Spiegel but honestly the most of the times u cant even remember the rest of the cast names. Also while a shorter story feels like a story, a bigger one can feel like there's another world going on by itself and the mangaka is just showing u what's going on, that is had to accomplish in 20 or 30 volumes. In conclusion both are good with pros and cons we only have to accept. i like seinen currently reading 20th century boys if u have good recommendations let me know
It's not just new fans

Shorter stories are easier to digest for most folks., and lets things like Chainsaw Man and even seinen romps like Goodnight Punpun deliver the emotional weight they want too as melodramas
people don't need to be dragged along for 300~1000 chapters to tell a compelling story anymore.
this was never not the case.Cowboy Bebop, FMAB, and many other anime/manga are short and sweet back then. The only difference is that the giants of long running story telling are starting to die out with a few exceptions

I honestly think that if we want shorter manga, we got to get rid of the arc format. Like for example FMA is like 100 (200 weekly chapters) long, but it works so well because it’s just one story. I do think that there’s definitely room for long series, but I agree that long series shouldn’t be the norm. I kinda want to go back to the old days when authors weren’t stuck on the same series for decades, which hopefully we are getting. I feel the issue with manga is that the story either feels too long or too short.
Even just as background footage I love seeing Kekkaishi getting even the slightest recognition. Truly underrated imo.

i like long running series a lot more than shorter series because i've always just been like that ever since i was little but i can see why people prefer shorter stuff over longer stuff. I really would like to see more longer running series in wsj again but the demand and schedules are intense especially with how brutal they are with cutting off series nowadays. but i'm still excited to see the next wave of manga once these current new gen manga conclude and stuff like that.
I prefer longer manga it has more time to flesh out characters, worldbuilding, and overall plot/story. You can see the author grow and get better as the story continues. I think the reason we don’t see longer manga is because it takes years of work and dedication and as we have seen before can worsen the overall health of the author not only that but in these times with so many good things out it’s hard to stand out and be different from the rest. -and the crazy fandoms doesn’t help either like if something’s not perfect there gonna get hate for example Aot ending or In Csm certain character deaths. Kinda went on a rant but love the vids keep it up❤
To be honest, I kinda feel like people like Araki and Fujimoto kind of found a healthy approach right now, though in their case you need to have the fanbase and the right friends inside the company. Both of them take a reasonable break after concluding one big part of their series, around one and a half year, which to be honest, should be just something that mangakas of long running series should be afforded to always. I feel like it can help against burn out and getting their mind together with how to continue things and Araki moved to a monthly schedule while Fujimoto jumps back and worth between weekly and bi-weekly. Especially for Fujimoto I think with Part 2, we can feel of how productive the pause between both parts in which he was able to just do one-shot and further hone his slice of life skills was.

Grat video! Suprised how few views you got. I think you're right, as someone who's been watching anime for 20 years, but started reading manga 2 years ago, it is intimidating and hard to get into a series that is on volume 30, it just makes me feel like I'll never get to know how it ends, But if I catch a long running manga in the early volume (1-10) then I can keep reading and have something to look forward to every week when a new chapter releases.
One piece is a beast that is hard for me to dive into because it's anime and manga are so long, and I don't know if it has that page gripping writing that makes me want to keep reading past volume 1. I was able to binge Chainsaw Man and Demon Slayer in a week because it was gripping, every chapter I was like "Okay, one more, chapter..." and I just went through it all. Every moment of peace I got, I was opening up my manga app and reading more chapters, I couldn't put it down.
One piece is like the

Which is a shame because the value one pieces story has is how long it is.

Long running shonen have left their mark and have given fans plenty of content to watch and enjoy for a lifetime so I'm not mad at this new approach, I also think it works best in this era that's packed with popular series
I fell in love with long running series about 2 years ago when watched Gintama and it made me watch One Piece and Bleach and love them for how they can build up some of the most interesting stories. One Piece sometimes feels like Oda knew everything from the beginning, just had to make a little more stops before the end goal because of the cool concepts he came up with.
"Manga series are getting shorter and shorter",
Meanwhile oda after 25 years of drawing one piece: "I said final saga but fk that, I am not rushin"
Part of the reason is that THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON DOING THE WHOLE MANGA! Like, holy shit. Story, art, formatting, one person all but locked in a room. American comics have at least half a dozen people, and they have similar throughput, but in color. And sold in individual issues. And they DON'T get bundled together and sold in a book once a month or so.
I don't know enough about manga to look into seeing if there's a group working on a single story, because I would LOVE to compare similar art and story styles.
Mangaka usually do have assistants, actually! They'll do the more menial tasks, like applying screentone or working on backgrounds. And manga usually have editors, who give feedback on the story and make suggestions for things to include. A mangaka's work IS grueling and not as collaborative as the work in American comics, but they're definitely not alone
Well it really depends on the western comic, and how they are published. Anthology magazines exist in the west. The biggest example I can think of is 2000 AD but even then there’s usually a writer and an artists, but they have to write a weekly comic for the magazine as well. And this way isn’t even unheard of in the manga world either. Fist of the North Star and Dr Stone each had an artist and a writer. It’s a lot more gray than one or the other.
One Piece is a perfectly bite sized Manga, my mouth just happens to be big.
Seems like One Punch Man is going to keep heading forward for at least a couple years.
At least! I hope it goes on forever, but who knows
Honestly I’d much rather have a short, sweet, and satisfying story like demon slayer, than boruto. But at the end of the day a story should be as long as it should be, wether it be 33 chapters or 1000+ chapters. A story should be given as much time as possible to reach a satisfying conclusion.
I think I like the change of shorter mangas but I hope there would be a few long series.
Depends on the world and setup. Like if Avatar was a manga, you have the franchise go on forever and still be new due to the concept of a new MC every so often by having a new series. Some, like Dragon Ball, suffer from being too long. At least in the animated department. This due to inconsistent writing over time. Some series could keep going after the main story by having mini-series that keeps you up to date on a character(s) lives.
I feel like this video is missing context. FMA was only 27 volumes. Sailor Moon is 18. Yu Yu Hakusho was 19. Naruto was 27. Yes, there are some longer running ones like One Piece and Bleach, but saying "Spy Family will end in 30 volumes" isnt really an outlier. I do think Jump is searching for their next entry that can run for decades, but it dont really think it shows stories are getting all that much shorter.
That's original Naruto not counting Shippuden and Boruto
sorry i didnt mention more manga lol
Who knows? There may be new manga, which may go on to become as long as the old ones. But manga wrapping up faster has it's advantages, because nothing stops the mangaka to create gaiden manga or even create a sequel on top of the setting they have established.
Fairy Tail for example received a sequel series, which directly continues the old manga with the same cast.
Another but older example, are JJBA and Pokemon Special Manga, which rotate the cast of characters while continuing in the very same setting.
Nice video! You seriously have a lot of potential dude! Thank god I found you in my home section! You will become a great RUclipsr my friend! :)
Aw thank you for that!! Appreciate your support!!!!!
I will kind of miss the longer series that do it well, like One Piece and uhhh. Yeah, can't really think of any other series that maintained its quality for over a decade.
Ayo this video looks hella improved Nice work
Thank you so much! You were one of my first ever comments, seriously thank you for watching!!!!!
great vid deserves more views
I think its because we're getting so used to short and quick entertainment so if something is even a little bit longer than we're used to we skip it. Like look at tiktok its easy af, u scroll see a short 5 second clip hilarious, but if u see the bar that shows u can skip through it nah never i aint watchin it. I think thats what anime is coming to aswell, and i feel it myself gettin older and its harder for me to sit down and watch a show without gettin bored or distracted with tiktok or games. Like OP i wanna get into it but to me its kinda boring and long BUT if i do like something i dont see the issue in it being long.
One thing I think is series like jjk black clover and Mha mainly if the authors of those series decide after they finish to make another manga it’s gonna be as long as Naruto and bleach as they tested the waters with these series and are prepared for the grind that is being a manga but as they are new to being one they aren’t used to it so that’s why it’s short despite them drawing huge influences form the big 3 and definitely they wanted their manga to be as long as them but simply couldn’t
Idk, Black Clover kinda feels like it it was supposed to be this long since its always been super fast paced.
That being said we probably will go to 600 chapters considering all the content we have left
@@blazie42069 I really doubt we will get to 600 we are already in the final arc
I won't lie, I really love Naruto and Dragon Ball, and have been enjoying my hero academia in recent years and I really wish there was more incentive for really long series
Well im going to miss getting more story material of beloved characters. Sometimes Fanfuc doesnt cut it. There is always the option of continuing short side stories through novelization but not many get the opportunity to do so.
I kinda prefer it like this. It's hard for me to remain invested in a story when its hella long. The longest anime I ever watched was fairytail and it was hard to stay invested at times.
You unlocked a memory with the Yugioh GBA game music! Now I gotta go find my copy and play it again. Also great vid btw
Thank you for watching!!! Im so glad people are noticing, I played the hell out of this game when I was young!!
You make good points, its just the new wave of anime nobody wants to wait for the payoff so they Rush endings.
I admire the integrity of modern hit mangaka to end their story when it's supposed to end. I'm sure these authors are also being pushed by publishers to drag out a best selling story, but doing so would only push them into the same formula that plagued so many long running manga. But even so I think it depends on the story, like Komi can't communicate having 27 volumes, if you think about it, it's approaching only half of what Naruto put out... but isn't that kind of insane for the kind of story it is? I have manga I've been following for 20 years that keep dragging things out and I just want to see the characters find peace. It's too intimidating to get into a lot of manga these days never knowing how long it's going to drag out and whether it will be worth the ride or a waste of time where I end up bailing out before it finishes.
I think a lot of romance (romance focused) series are actually getting longer rather than shorter, surprisingly.
i would like to see a top 69 unknown manga list! would be interested in ur thoughts. if u wanted to stretch it out you could do two lists, one for top 69 unknown ongoing manga and one for top 69 unknown finished manga. this was a fun vid too
I got you bro! I definitely want to make one just not sure when. Thanks so much for watching !!
the other thing that has happened is that series nowadays start off with a ton of hype moments to rope people in, where as older series have kinda been a trust the process type thing and you have to wait a good like 20+ episodes for the first big moment or fight scene with actual impact
Which is good IMO
Having to watch more than 20, 40 or more episodes to finally get to the good stuff that you can actually enjoy. It doesn't seem worth it.
@@lix1806 then you've never seen Hitman reborn the payoff is worth it more than you think.
@@erueka6 but thats the thing, isn't it? Such series really only work out through word of mouth and kind of getting informed by people you trust or even outright spoilered about the pay off, while on face value if a series can't really hook you in after a few chapters, you're not likely to stick to it.
@@shizachan8421 I was never spoiled and found it by myself those sound like personal problems
@@shizachan8421 what's really changed in this era is the don't judge by the cover trope again same series hitman reborn I saw a couple title pictures and manga covers years apart and before watching or reading and it was nothing like I expected it to be but for the last and current gen manga and anime I can usually nearly judge it based on its appearances and mostly be right.
Well JJK was supposed to end after Yuji died.
Gege bringing him back to life was always a temporary thing so I wasn’t surprised when he said that the manga was ending this year.
Not every manga we get is going to be one piece long. And they shouldn't be so long either, look at black clover still on going. I think alot of artist now have developed their story telling abilities so that we don't have to fluff around useless scenes or unneeded plot lines.
Also could prevent manga burnout and back problems that many longer running series seem to run into.
I'm so in love with Seven Deadly Sins: The Four Knights of the Apoclypse!
You know I'm kinda surprised that some series are gonna end soon and that a lot of series are getting shorter, but also the rise of spin-off series as well
I’m really hoping that JJK won’t be ending within the year. That being said, I like that these shows are simply telling their stories, tying it up in a nice bow, and then ending it without dragging it on to the point of being redundant just for the sake of keeping it going. Even some of the greats are too long and dip in quality significantly at several points, because it’s just not realistic to keep consistent quality for over a decade. Meanwhile, these shorter series’ like JJK and chainsaw man are consistently high quality throughout due to their shorter length. The stories don’t force themselves to keep going and overstay their welcome.
As long as One Piece is, it's at least used its length to develop what's easily the most complex/fully realized fictional world in any manga/anime series. There are some manga that are just long for no reason other than they still get read so the mangaka keeps going
Yeah like Rent-a-Girlfriend
I guess the chance that anime of the shorter series get finished is also a great key factor why mangas get more compact
Honestly yeah. The only manga I've seen among the new gen of manga that seems to be aiming for a long run is black clover, dandadan, boruto, gachiakuta, and maybe diamond in the rough. We're slowly losing long running animes as a genre, which sucks because some of my favorite are long running animes.
I think another thing is the way that TV and streaming have affected things. Obviously, it only affects Manga that have Anime adaptions, but especially with Shonen manga anime adaptions are part and parcel of their success. Most of the especially long manga/anime happened in the 2000s, riding the 90s anime boom, and most of the overseas audience got the anime on a big time delay drip thread through late night tv and an official English dub on a weekly basis. Obviously, anime adaptions still release on a weekly basis via normal tv in Japan, but streaming and binge watching, simulcasting and official broadcasts of subs overseas, have probably also partially incentivized editors to think about if their stories are binge/streaming friendly if they successfully get adapted. You don't see series anticipating huge multi year tv runs anymore because people don't take in media and especially tv like that anymore.
All the other reasons discussed here are super valid, but I do think that a not insignificant portion of it is that now we don't do long form paced out media consumption anymore.
I'm going to be honest I disagree.
I believe that series are generally shorter, but that's cause of better writing (less beach episodes is arguably better writing. A beach episode where plot happens is just better in every way), better contracts which allow authors to end their series and more competition (manga now has to compete with manwha, anime originals, etc).
Finally I know for a fact there will always be freaks of nature like Oda, Togashi or Miura who by all means achieved peak success and weren't threatened to stop or to keep going, AND still they continued to write their stories no matter what until they achieve their ending. Hell put Mashima as well with them cause he may have ended fairy tail but as far as I can see he plans to keep going on his new manga.
Some artists for sure are just normal people like you and me. But these freak artists who truly love their work will never stop popping up and I'm excited to meet the new one yet to rise.
And here I am contemplating whether vagabond will ever end or not
I personally prefer shorter manga, cuz I don’t wanna spend ages reading a single manga
Im kind of glad that they are getting over. one of my biggest complaisn is that some of them seem to be neverending. Is good to keep them with a moderate length so you could enjoy the story whidout even feel like burnt out or that nothing is happening and I think the biggest offender is by far One Piece at the minute. We can excuse Doraemon because that one is more like a slice of life instead of a full cohesive story.
One Piece I would say is one of the well most thought out manga because the author has been working on it since he was a kid and one of the reasons why we love the manga.
rent a girlfriend will be 1500 chapters long beating even one piece with the two love interests finally holding hands at the end.....
also im sure a lot of it has to do with health issues. the longer a series goes the more you hear about them needing breaks and hiatuses
Shorter manga have the advantage that they tell their story quick and concise so a reader can digest everything at once and not have to put mental energy if they are done yet from longer stories
Although some stories could be long but very quick when actually reading them
I found myself finishing Bleach and Vagabond very quickly in like a month BECAUSE of their easy paneling and quick to read pages which helps the pacing. Similar how I felt reading chainsaw even though Bleach/Vagabond are longer stories
Though I can’t say the same with something like One Piece where it’s designed to be dense every chapter, at least time skip forward, on top of being 1000+ chapters so I had some difficulty getting through it and I’m sure new readers have fear in that length which is why they could get put off in the first place
There seem to be only two kinds of people, those who haven't read any long stories out of their length, and those who love them.
This video was great! Glad I found your channel :)
Thank you for watching!! I appreciate the support!!!!
Def don't want a story to just be 1 day of reading and that's it...
Like I guess the ones pointed out where very long running series and I'm fine with ones that run shorter than those but I hope it's not TOO short
Just imagine reading something and wanting to see more but nope
It ended cuz it was just short af...
The thing I'm worried about is that jujutsu kaisen is rushing its ending which will lead to it being bad. The series is peak if it closes off on a bad ending I'm going to mourn
Great video. While I understand the theory, I have to kindly disagree.
The current landscape of how media is consumed and sold always changes. People are not always going to be the way they are now. While lots of kids are growing up with less interest in longer series, it doesn't mean there will not be a market for it, especially later.
Humans have liked long-running stories for thousands of years. There's a place for all kinds of stories, and every type has a purpose.
New readers are picking up long-running manga all the time. Kids were "just not reading books" until Harry Potter came and revolutionized middle school books. Today's TikTok kids are still reading and listening to Harry Potter (which mind you, has over 70 hours of audiobook to listen to). The difference is the audience found it worth reading, and it spawned more of the middle school fantasy market over the years (Keeper of the Lost Cities, Percy Jackson, Wingfeather, Wings of Fire, off the top of my head)
We could be walking into a media revolution where everything changes, monopolies are broken, and social media is controlled. Maybe not. Maybe people will be tired of the current landscape and return to more holistic roots. Maybe not. Maybe things will never change, and stay the same they are right now. Maybe not.
If something is worth the time, then it's worth your time. As someone who has read thousands of comics and watched hundreds of anime, I stopped finding them worth it because I hadn't found a well-written one I liked in years. I quit anime for a long time then I tried One Piece for laughs. And I LOVED it. I thought I'd find another reason to hate anime. It was, dare I say it, refreshing.
People who have "short attention spans" can also be locked into bingeing for 8 straight hours of hour-long episodes. One series can have multiple threads going on (which they should if they are long), making it easy to stay engaged because you're not watching Frodo walk with the ring for 9 hours. You see what's happening everywhere else that matters.
If something feels tired, overdone, not compelling, not lovable or just draining to watch (physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually) people aren't going to do it. If someone spends 4.7 hours on TikTok a day, averaging at 300 tiktoks an hour, those are short commitments to spend on things they don't like, so they keep doing it until they find something that's rewarding. Many of them will be like the adults I know that got so burned out, they deleted it, and never looked back.
I'm not saying there is a future for any particular kind of medium that's worth betting on, but it's not accurate to disregard something because it doesn't work now. Some media don't exist yet. RUclipsrs were not predicable in 2005, but they're active workers in the industry now, until they inevitably die out because of policy. Again, that's theory.
One piece has survived many wars, earthquakes, graduating classes, political landscape changes, a complete shift in western culture, and it's stronger than ever and still resonates despite changes in people. If it doesn't work, why does it, along with many others, keep gaining momentum?
Tl;dr
Bottom line, people will enjoy anything that is good, no matter what the medium, and since the media landscape changes all the time, it's impossible to declare anything about the present, let alone the future. The industry you will spend your life in may not even exist yet.
Godspeed, my friend, and whoever spent the time to read this.
Great points! I don't think it has much to do with trends at all in the first place, it just happens to be the current mangaka are writing shorter stories at the moment. Some of the series he mentions in the video are still even ongoing, so we don't really know how long these will even be (even if an author says they're wrapping a story up soon, that could easily mean 5-10 volumes.) Of course, if publishing companies are putting pressure on a mangaka to end a story, that could be the case, but there's no reason to do that if it's popular and selling. I think the only argument one could really make is that publishing companies have *possibly* stopped forcing mangaka to drag out their stories. I don't think these super long series were really ever that plentiful to begin with, we have decades to look back on. Going off of longer series "now" would just be in what... the last decade?
@@TanteiFox I've only heard of a handful of comics and books that they wanted to go longer against the wishes of the author. Generally, they cancel them when even the authors have way too many things they want to do. Black Clover's author wants it to be over a thousand chapters, but they're asking him to wrap up the current arc to finish because it's not making as much money as it used to.
As far as the landscape changing, most of what we know (about long-running comics specifically) is that they are made by Japanese people in Japanese culture by Japanese companies (mostly Jump, dark horse or other). Webcomics is dominated by Naver's webtoon and is "killing" black and white book comics. We could have new comic companies with new artists from around the world to usher in a new comic era, but maybe not. We have no idea.
@@luck0717 I can only really speak to manga and anime as I don't read or watch others forms of comics and animation. Though, I do know webtoon would be much harder to grasp length, as they are in "episodes" of randomly varying lengths. Whereas manga volumes are usually a comparable length regardless of the number of chapters (tends to be around 10, 20 page chapters) compiled in them.
@@TanteiFox Correct. Manga makes most of it's money off of volumes being sold and subscriptions or purchases of weekly magazines that have a chapter or so of a good selection of comics. Now they people are doing things digitally it changes.
Many webcomics are straddling 300-400 episodes (lookism, god of high school, tower of god, and others). However, we haven't had a comic started post 2017 that has lasted that long with a good number of viewers. It's actually really weird. Most comics drop off after 100 ish episodes.
I think one of the main reasons is that the story ends when it ends. Otherwise you get sasuke Vs a velociraptor if they force elongate the storyline.
What's the name of the ninja anime at 1:43 ?
Kekkaishi! Thank you for watching!!
Such a underrated video. Cant believe you only have 1K subs
Thanks for this comment!! i really appriciate it!!!

My issues with this is that the ending starts to feel rushed and fall flat cause they tried to end the manga as quickly as possible. Tokyo Revengers, Promised Neverland and Demon Slayer are common issues with this. JJK has so many unanswered questions that it's almost impossible to have it all answered within a year without crunching. Longer forms does ended up suffers from having the story being dragged out but like you said, it makes you feel as part of the story. And also the endings while usually not perfect, still gave enough satisfaction for the reader as it felt properly concluded . And I do think while these mangas are great for hype, in the long run they won't be as memorable cause people will already move on to the next big thing.
There’s only a handful of manga I feel have been able to pull off the long run. The only problem I foresee with these short lived manga series is maybe rushed endings..but it’s more consumable. I love One Piece but I couldn’t do it again with another series.
While I do still love these shorter stories, and some even reach almost the pinnacle of Shonen, they will just never reach above stories like the big 3. It's a situation where those stories are so grand, and have been built up so much that it's impossible to reach the same narrative value without being as long
I definitely agree that we won't see long running shonen again or that is feels pretty unlikely. I dont know if its good or bad I think as long as creators are making the stories they want, some consumer somewhere will listen. I think it could be related to our fast paced culture - or the fact that some of the more "broad goals" have already been taken ie; King of the Pirates, Number 1 hero, Hokage, Etc. I love the direction a lot of manga are going in and Im intrested to see the future of it all!
One popular modern series that feels like it's definitely gonna run for a long time is One Punch Man. At this point it's 177 chapters in (most of which are 70 - 100 pages long instead of the standard Shonen Jump weekly releases that are around 20 - 30) and it just started its 3rd arc and it still barely hits the halfway point of the web comic which itself feels like it's not even halfway done. On top of that the manga stretches out the original story so there's no way of telling how long it's actually gonna be in the end. It may just enter the realm of "the big 3" in terms of its length.
I'm excited to see where one punch goes. I would love for it to be the new long running #1
I came interested but left with a nostalgia bomb the moment I heard this GBA YuGiOh soundtrack. Thanks man
Appreciate u bro!! I'm so surprised the amount of people who recognize this song!!
The only issue I see is good stories leaving story beats on the table. A lot of demon slayer is good guy vs bad guy when it could have a lot more interesting character dynamics and plots that shift the narrative drastically.
I've come to be wary of long series. If handled well, great! If completed, fantastic!
But I've been burned before, have gotten bored, have been fed up with bad fillers.
Thank God for stories that know who they are, what they are, tell their story and leave.
