      LOL that thing is ridiculously rare still. I think it's over in Thailand or Indonesia. It's about $12,000 USD a leaf... but it's in TC I think so it'll be much cheaper soon.

    I just saw one Etsy spiritis sancti tissue culture for 150.00.And monstera mint tissue culture for 295.00.Yes their babies but affordable.Great video I cut my pink princess a month ago and I have 3 leaves coming in and one is all pink why because the leaves after the varigated had almost no varigation.Our baby Joepii 3inch pot are appr.50.00.I have question-if these expensive plants are becoming more accessible-what's next for expensive plants, will they be hybrids as we are seeing alot of them now or are they(poachers)going to revisit the jungles and look for new(rare plants) Thank you for taking time to share you planty wisdom and for just spending time with us.

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Год назад

      Hey Alice, awesome to hear they're more available and affordable now.
      I think in my opinion (again, very limited experience here), but I think it'll flatten out and then just ebb and flow with different plants as they get picked up by social media influencers etc and the supply/demand ratio is skewed. For instance, I have a green "silver sword" (i.e. normal P. hastatum) and it's one of the hardest things I had to find... I've only seen it for sale once and I bought it. That said, it was cheap as chips, maybe $20 for a small plant. However, if tomorrow all of a sudden they're en vogue and everyone wants one, the prices could go through the roof because there're just none available as no one's really cultivating them. So I think it'll probably follow that sort of pattern.
      I think you'll also keep having new variegated things pop up in TC for already popular house plants. They're doing it brute force in Thailand at the moment. For instance, variegated joepii was about $13,000 USD per leaf a few months ago and it's already coming down. That was a chance mutation in the 1000s of joepii TC plants being produced. So, that'll keep happening. Variegated P. atabapoense, silver sword, obliqua, burle marx flame, etc. Any of those that suddenly pop up variegated will be the next huge thing until they're mass produced and the prices crash.

    It's so strange to me that a plant can be in commercial production before its been described. How long does it take to name a plant?

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Год назад

      I think it happens loads as the plant is found in the wild (poached often) in South America or elsewhere, grown privately, then sold to the international market, and once it's popular, people in tissue culture companies chuck it through TC to export world wide and make a profit. Science might not even be aware.
