It makes sense. The more light, the less chlorophyll the leaf needs to get the same sugar level. It’s a balancing act.

Lol, thought the same with all the craziness here in the US.
I tried to talk a friend out of buying a mint, when she already had a regular ghost, and told her just to take a cutting and give it less light, but she refused to listen, even though her mint cost her twice what the ghost did. I'm sure she's kicking herself now. In the meantime, I've been turning my green into a mint over the last few months, and hoping it turns into a white one soon, just I think it needs a lot more light still!

I'm trying to decide whether to get a more matured greener florida, or to get a smaller mintier ghost for almost the same price in Indonesia. i overthink the 'florida' green of not being able to turn lighter overtime given enough light

@@adriantomo5688 my ghost reverted to green, yes, it turned into a mint and now is finally white again using the brighter light. But a regular florida I don't think will turn white, just the ghost varieties.
Just want to add to Kaylee’s wonderful video. In my experience importing and caring for ghosts - not all ghosts seem to have the potential to be brilliant white. I have many all under the same light and conditions but from many different breeders - light does = lighter leaves but some will never go past a light green/‘minty white’ stage in my experience

I purchased a Florida Ghost "Mint" on a FB purge last winter. It pushed out several "minty" leaves and I was pleased as punch.
I then decided I needed a complete set and purchased a Florida Ghost. All was well in my world! Or so I thought.
The only issue I have had is that both plants were growing small leaves.
I watched a RUclips video that said these plants were heavy feeders. So instead of the organic weak fertilizer I had been giving them I started feeding them with a different fertilizer and I'll be darned if not only did the leaves become larger, my "Mint" just unfurled a gorgeous white leaf.
This is absolutely the only thing I have changed. It sits on my shelves under my grow light exactly where I put it 8-9 months ago when I got it. Literally nothing else has changed other than the season going from winter to summer. Both plants sit on the shelf next to each other.
It really doesn't matter to me what it is. I still love both plants.
I can now pot them up together, give them a moss pole and have a nice big beautiful pot of Florida Ghost.
Prior to all this I believed the Florida Ghost Mint was just a Florida Ghost with crappy variegation.
I am firmly convinced, in my case anyway, that the fertilizer was the factor that was the game changer for me.
Please keep us all informed on this subject as I am very interested to see what conclusions you come up with.

Okay this gives me SO much hope for my P Billietiae. I accidentally snapped off the new growth and it came back with the TINIEST little leaf I've ever seen 😂 it's under one of my nicer grow lights and gets half decent natural light as well. Going to pump it full of plant steroids and hope it helps
I moved my ghost a while ago into a different spot with lower light, knowing full well that it would likely produce lime leaves instead of the white. I still adore it and I still think it looks beautiful as a mix of citrus green colours. Its nice to be reassured though that if I did really want the white back I can switch up where it's living. I did start to worry that I had reverted my plant and I couldnt find ANY information confirming whether or not that could happen. Really appreciate the video 💚👻🌱

Thanks so much for clearing up that whole debate! The lighting being what’s influencing variegation makes total sense! It’s overcompensating and basically making up for the lack of chlorophyll in the white leaves. Plants are so amazing! I love Florida ghosts! It’s one of the 2 plants I still don’t have and hope to get soon.😊🌱
I love how thorough you research before you make a video. Also, the light and verigation theory makes a lot of sense. I've heard the same with verigated string of hearts. If it doesn't get a lot of sun, it'll revert back to green

I agree with you, light is the most important determining factor! Though I have yet to experiment with grow lights vs natural light. I do find that growing them in dappled natural light does tend to produce more mint leaves for me. I've also known friends that have given their ghosts too much natural light and the leaves emerge white/brown and can't sustain themselves as there's not enough chlorophyll in the new leaf, so moving it back from the light source (window) solved that problem.
Very interested to discover how the random patches of reverse variegation occur though!
I think this is the problem I had - mine had two leaves that never turned green no matter how much I willed them to, and they died off. Further away from the light source, the leaves are coming in a very pale green, but at least they have some chlorophyll!!

I picked up a pot with three stems of Florida Ghost for free because previous owner was disappointed in "variegation reverse". I'm really thankful for this video.
I totally agree with the fact that light affects the whiteness. I have mine growing in the same spot for 5 months now. It pushed out whiter leaf during sunny season and greener during rainy season (monsoon) . By the way, I'm from Malaysia.

I got a Florida Ghost on eBay that was sold for €10 because they thought it was a Florida Green and believed they got scammed. I still found the leaf shape so pretty that I got it without thinking about it further and since it's really warm the plant is outside on my south-facing balcony most of the time. The first new leave came out super white, and I was so excited.

This was so helpful! I bought a ghost and there's some variegation, but we haven't seen much of the coloration we'd expect. Now that it's been in more light, I'm excited to watch it lighten up!

I have a regular Florida (ie fully green and will never be any other colour) and I love the leaf shape. I am not a fan of the white leaves so have not been tempted by the ghost, but after seeing this I definitely need one: in my home and light conditions it would grow in lime and I LOVE it like that.
"Just to be clear, I'm not saying sellers are trying to make extra money off saying 'Mint' is a cultivar..." You should be, because they absolutely are. They deliberately stay "uneducated" so they can always use it as an excuse. If you and I are capable of doing research, so is every other seller and they should be held accountable for blatant lies.

just wondering if it is the same with squamiferum..i mean the change of color in their leaves depending on the light...since they are almost the same,just the stem varies.
@@bettyjaso444 I don't think plants vary in the stem, that's a good indicator of species if there is a difference to be seen. I do believe the 'Florida' and other similar looking species are hybrids or selective tissue cultures using either pedatum or squamiferum as a parent plant, but the evidence is in the stem--if it's bumpy, it's probably from squamiferum, if it's smooth it's probably from pedatum.
I had suspicions about the mint thing. Thank you for this video. Definitely going to move my super green goes to a brighter spot and see what happens.

I think stress from propagation makes a lot of variety in colors as well! I love chopping my ghost
I finally got one of those.. Not for the mint myth, but because i find the leaf shapes amazing!! So green or lime or white, i love them all!!
variegation is affected by light because white tissue has no chlorophyll. For the plant to be able to spare some space on the leaves that won't photosynthesize much, it needs to get bright light.
My ghost was putting out white leaves under my grow light. I moved it to my green house shelf where i didnt finish putting the extra light strip on that shelf. Ultimately, my white leaf turned to mint and now the new growth is coming out mint. I just moved it back to its original spot directly under my grow light. We will see what happens!

I suspected and came to this same conclusion. Having several large Florida Ghosts, I’ve experimented growing them in different light conditions. Using a full spectrum high quality white LED , the leaves emerge with red cataphyil and leaves have very bright white or light cream. When a plant is deprived of light, it tends to produce more chlorophyll to achieve photosynthesis. I have propagated cuttings from the same plant and produced variations based on light. If a leaf already has produced a lot of green chlorophyll, it will not revert to white but it may produce some paling which resemble a mint effect. New growth will be creamy white.
Interesting observations I was thinking the same thing about the green leave. If a plant isn't getting enough light it will obviously need more chlorophyll to meet its needs for nourishment and continual growth. If we think about other variegated plants renisance the golden pothos if it's kept in a darker place it loses its variegation because it needs to have every little cell producing food for the plant. When a plant gets enough light it could let some of it cells be lighter in color. What's interesting about light versus Darkness with this plant is we all know that white leaves on Hoya and other plants if it has too many white leaves the plant will die because there is not enough chlorophyll in the leaves to produce food. Not sure if magnesium has anything to do with white leaves but I do know magnesium is necessary for chlorophyll production so I wonder if that mineral has anything to do with all of this. So many variables so little time
Kathleen Murphy good points. it seems that on the ghost, the emerging leaves are designed to take on more chlorophyll as they age. They start out white and then eventually fill in more green when they are bypassed by a new emerging leaf. My assumption is that ample light and photosynthesis on the lower green leaves trigger a whiter emerging leaf.
@@Bronco_Graves great insight and to that plant because if it gets enough light it can produce new leaves that are a lighter color but to keep the plant alive it has to develop chlorophyll in the older leaves... Any of you guys a fan of Night blooming Cereus? Epiphyllum Oxypetalum? They grow beautifully in FL if you can provide the right amount of shade and their blooms smell soo amazing!! They can also be grown indoors...honestly its a pretty hardy plant that is super worth it once they mature enough to bloom
YES I have owned one from cuttings for 35 years or more. LOL Populated a whole lot of Idaho with them sharing cuttings. Just posted photos of mine on instagram yesterday?? after a huge repot and break down to three plants as she was far too large for me to handle any more. @chrispyle1949 The blooms are to die for except they come on so late at night and are done by morning. I try to make a point of needing to do something through the night to enjoy her flowers. I used to keep her in my studio so I could work drink wine and enjoy. Life is too short not to enjoy the small things.

Nice video, thanks. I agree that it is probably due to light. Plants in lower light condition need more chlorophyll (hence the mint color) to get the same amount of energy as a plant in brighter light. It is a form of conditioning them self to the light they get.

I agree with the higher light statement. My calathea fusion white was moved to my bathroom with a higher light output and each leaf that unfurls is whiter than the last. Pretty soon I’m going to have to move it just to get more green!! 😆

Great timing! I was sold a Florida ghost mint and noticed the leaves are as speckled anymore and look more lemon/lime in color. I’m not upset because I actually wanted a Florida ghost anyways.

I was under the impression that a Ghost mint was a ghost/hastatum hybrid that caused the blue silver color of hastatum to come out but the shape of the leaf to resemble a ghost. I'm glad I now know this is not true.

My ghost is extremely white but the leaves got thin and fell off in direct sun. I moved him to a high humidity, ~80-90 F room with something in front of it to block direct sunlight. Popped 2 cream leaves out in a week right after the move. He’s so happy now

I've just finally got my hands on a florida ghost, by far my favourite plant and I am so excited! Yes it's not a Thai constellation or anything flashy like that, but I for one think this plant is so beautiful and interesting and I am so so happy to have one! I've just come back to this video to check I've got it set up perfectly 😁 also think it's interesting how I was sold a " ghost mint" which was cheaper than the "ghost", go figure 😂😂
