I am surprised by how good the timpani sounds in this piece, particularly in the 1st and 2nd movement. I find that the timpani is almost like thunder singing. The playing with the cymbal and the crotales with the glissandi is really outwordly.
Roland Härdtner really does a fine job in blending the timpani with the orchestra.
