Yeah in the edit I noticed that "you left it quite late" being... SUCH an insane comment as if it were my fault in any way. But I will absolutely never snap on the phone. Gotta always try to be kind. Though I had a breakdown on the phone to HSBC as I was beggin the person who barely knew enough English to read from her prewritten list to please try to comprehend what I was saying and not repeat the same 2 sentences as if they're different. But that was more sad less mad. And much more "this is why I'm leaving"
@@EvanEdingerTravel As someone who has worked in customer service, I can tell you that you are a very rare specimen and such a good person for staying so polite and calm. So often we get yelled at by people for daring to suggest that they pay their bills after severeal months of not paying us at all. started watching this video and my husband screamed from across the room, "OMG IS THAT GUY STILL NOT IN HIS HOUSE PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP HIM LORD"...so then i had to calmly explain everything to him lol
As a former HSBC employee the only way to get any reasonable customer service out of them is face to face in a branch, and even that is getting hard these days. Dealing with them on the phone all you are met with, most of the time, is incompetence and ineptitude.
I agree about HSBC. HSBC took 9 months to tell me they couldn’t help with a refund (after travel company went bust), they gave me £200 as an apology since it took so long.
Been so stoked to see the rest of the story… Witnessing the final boss battle 🍿 That hold music was epic. Ravin’ on hold. The shower looked horrid. I’m still trying to accept all the people saying you need to start everyday with a cold shower to be productive… 🥶 looks terrible. “Get my WHAT off of you…??” - Evan Edinger 2021
I'm also an American living in the UK buying a house, and have been watching this series in horror. This video nearly pushed me over the edge until you were in the flat! So happy for you, Evan. Congratulations!
So happy that you’ve got your flat and you can finally close this horrible chapter! People don’t realise how awful being homeless is even if you have somewhere to crash. I was sofa surfing for 6 months when I was 19 and constantly living out of a suitcase, not having my belongings to hand, and being unable to buy a weekly shop or cook left me feeling unsafe and unable to relax. It’s traumatising. Allow yourself some time to have a meltdown now that the crisis has passed and you have a safe space. Enjoy your flat!
I hate it when you have to chase people, for things. It is like when my cousin/client of mine is trying to get Lenovo to fix his laptop which has been an absolute nightmare.
I had to call every person, every day. Multiple times. So many chances for this to not happen. Only way I got in was an almost constant state of calling and panic
I work in real estate brokerage and this series has given me so much more empathy for buyers! What a wild ride. The amount of frustration and relief!! I'm so glad it worked out in the end. Can't wait to see how you decorate your place!
I’ve watched you religiously since 2014 and when I say I cried when you unlocked the door. I was bawling. I’m so glad you finally got in to your flat, so proud of you 💗💗
I know a lot has happened, but this is also the first video in which I've heard Evan have quite a bit of a British accent. Like when he's said a few phrases, there was definitely a little bit of an accent there! It's crazy to see you come this far compared to a few years ago! (Regarding your housing crisis and accent)
FINALY!!!!! - So stoked! - You could hear the pain in your voice after that shower... Congrats man. EPIC Moving Vlog?! That final slug of whiskey is waiting for you!
I do not envy the cold shower in the middle of winter. I’ve had to endure that three too many times in rental properties when the boilers broke midwinter and had no other option when needing to appear presentable sooner than it would be fixed.
I remember watching this video when it came out and feeling so happy for you Evan. Here I am watching it over a year later waiting patiently for my own exchange of contracts and completion in a few days. Its been nearly 6 months for me and I didnt even have a complecated case, just a bunch of prople who dont do much work and a very impatient seller. The end of this video always makes me so happy and it gives me hope even after all this hell I'll FINALLY get a house too!
I still remember getting the keys to my place at exactly 5 minutes to 5, almost 6 months after getting my mortgage granted (i had legal issues that had to be ironed out) and i rememeber soooo well that absolute relief nad SHEER JOY that Evan is now feeling. Heres to a wonderful time in your new home!
Buying my house last year I cried down the phone to the solicitor multiple times because they didn’t tell us till the day before exchange and completion was meant to happen that there was a problem with our deposit as it came from some inheritance from my grandad in Spain. We literally had told them months before and they said they didn’t need other documents but one day before they decided they did. It would have been fine except we had to complete that day because I had to hand my notice in that day as I had accepted a new job (but you absolutely can’t change circumstances before the completion is final). So happy you finally got your flat!
I remember how stressful the whole process is. We had an amazing mortgage advisor who helped us through the whole thing but still had many scary moments when we thought we wouldn't get the mortgage. All issues were purely due to stupid bureaucracy they have at the banks and the sellers solicitors not being available a lot of the time. Congratulations on the flat, it looks amazing and I really enjoy all your videos. ❤️ As a foreigner living in UK (6years this Oct.) it is comforting to see I'm not alone in some of the struggles. 😄
I watched the video. I read all the comments. Then I watched it through again. SOOO happy for you! I already knew you'd gotten it, but also, it's so satisfying to see how you got through all of it. I love your commitment to being kind to all those people on the phone; I don't think I could have. Your champagne dance in an empty room was amazing. I'm beyond glad that it finally came together, and just for Christmas. It's unreal.
Even though I knew the ending, this was still quite the suspense-filled video!! Evan, I'm SO HAPPY that it all finally worked out and you got the BEST Christmas present, ever! Congratulations on your new home! You deserve all the best. 😊🙌
Automated telephone messages and hold music are truly the most aggravating thing one can experience. So glad you got through! What a relief. Happy to let you know my mum also told me not to bank with HSBC when I went to Uni lol. She didn't like dealing with them so I was like alright and went with Barclays just cause my friends had Barclays as well.
Ahhh i had seen a lot on instagram but its so nice seeing it on here :) also Bliss is the perfect person to share in that moment as she is such an amazing friend and has the best energy for you to celebrate with 😁
I legit almost cried I hate moving, I've done it 4(?) times and it doesn't ever get easier, i can't imagine having to deal with all of this on top of everything. Congratulations! 🎉
I'm so pleased that you finally got in. I'm so mad /sad, sorry and a billion of others things about the way you've been treated and the shit you've had to go through. No one had ever deserved champagne more, well done
For cold showers, does your stove work? If the place has a bath, draw a cold bath, then put boiling water in until it is a bit above warm. If no bath, then do the same, but mix it with cold water in a container and use them to rinse yourself.

Now to watch the next few to see how you are getting on. These videos are great - I got really invested and was rooting for you to make it in before Christmas. So pleased you did. Believe it or not, I worked for a bank about 45 years ago that was taken over by HSBC and I would never in a million years touch them with a 10 foot barge pole :)

Cannot believe that after Evan’s warning about HSBC there was an advert for it! So glad everything worked out in the end, Evan. The whole system needs to change. There is no reason for the appalling delays and problems in these days of technology.
This video definitely was not good for my blood pressure and I'm glad I waited a bit before I watched it because damn I wouldn't have been able to handle it a few days ago. I used to work for a bank in a call center but I was nothing special at all in that company but this is still extremely frustrating to me. Also a reason why I'm not working there anymore, too many emotions I couldn't handle. Had customers cry on the phone at least twice a week or more. More usually around big holidays like Christmas. Didn't have anything to do with mortgages but still was able to look into this stuff and tell people where they were in their process.
Congratulations! I am so enormously amazed how you managed to keep yourself together enough to actually move into your flat and not into some psych ward, after everything you encountered.
