My auntie is an engineer and taught me how to do basic diy stuff like hanging picture frames, putting up wallpaper, sewing stuff, using a drill, sanding, putting fixings in the wall, assembling ikea furniture etc. it was super nice to have someone to hold my hand through it even though it all sounds really easy. It just gave me confidence i was doing the right stuff y’know?

I learned a lot of that stuff because my mom likes to sew, and we purchased a "fixer upper" house when I was young. So, i learned sewing, basic carpentry, basic electrical, and my school had Ag class, where I learned welding and plumbing.

I have a few tips that might help. Your drill is 'chuckless' which makes it easy to change drill bits without a key - there's a knack to changing bits, I'd try to describe it but probably easier to watch a video about chuckless drills.
Where you drilled a hole in the back of the drawer unit, you could use an arbor tool (hole saw) and then cover the rough edges with a desk grommet - it will also make the hole look smaller as they usually have a cover. Alternatively, you can just cut off moulded plugs and replace them with a regular one, meaning you won't need to drill as large a hole.
I hope this helps and I'm really enjoying your DIY and moving in videos.

For Future Ref: When you want to take the wire/plug apart: You don't need to disconnect each of the strands: The legs (brass bits) of the plug can be removed , with the wire still attached, these can then be feed through the hole and reinserted into the plastic part of the plug.

It has never occurred to me to do this, but it's such an obviously great idea for hiding wires.
If you did want to keep the hole more discreet, you could have cut the plug off the Ikea lamp, and installed a new one. You'd need to buy wire strippers along with the new plug.

I basically grew up living in houses that were essentially building sites, so 'DIY' is just second nature to me.
According to the 'old people', not too long ago electricals didn't even come with plugs, you had to attach them yourself, and you were taught how to do it in school. Even as a 25 year old, we were taught in school how to wire a plug, and since I'd been doing it since I was a literal baby I had done it before they'd even finished the demonstration!
Honestly, with electrical work, once you understand the basics it's simple!

For the labels, you definitely don't want lines because they'll show. Here's two suggestions:
    1. Print one copy where you have an outline (stroke) around each card, then print another normally. Line them up and cut them with the outlined one on top and throw those out. That works great in cutters that can handle two pieces of paper. If not, then:
    2. Cut the uppermost line first, using the crops at the upper left, then cut the left side off by using the crops in the lower left. Now do the math to cut from the right side, working your way inward. Then do the same working from the bottom up.
It also looked like you had a gutter (empty space) in between each card... which you don't need if none of your design goes to the edge of the label. Sorry, been in print and design for over 30 years and can't help myself.

I learned about crop marks in college when dry mounting! You cut from corner to corner and then the “art” is released and you’re left with a sort of frame! That way you don’t slice off the rest of your crop marks! I know you’ve probably already finished this but maybe for future projects this could be a helpful tidbit!

    • @better.better
      @better.better 2 года назад

the best way to cut along crop marks is to do the long sides first, cutting past the marks and the short sides second, cutting across the first cuts. if you're using a steel straight edge and an Exacto/"craft knife" to do this, make sure you always do it with a fresh blade. also make sure your fingers holding down the straight edge are well away from the edge where the blade will be running. It's the most surreal thing to watch the tip of your thumb roll away. You don't even feel any pain for several minutes until the rest of your body realizes that something is missing. as I watched it roll away I didn't even realize that's what it was. It took a moment to even realize what had happened. my mistake was in forgetting to reposition my hand after lining up the straight edge to the crop marks..
you can get self-healing cutting mats at your local art shop so you don't slice up your table.
if you're using a paper trimmer get the cutting wheel type and practice on samples first. usually software that supports crop marks also supports being able to specify how far apart the marks are from the final edge. if the design of the paper trimmer you're using obscure as the crop marks at the default spacing, go into the settings and see if you can set it to a bigger spacing I'm pretty sure Photoshop supports that

I've had that running water problem with an enclosed toilet cistern before. You shouldn't have to turn off the mains stopcock. Use a torch & look for the isolation valve/lever on the pipe that leads to the cistern. Turn the lever or an isolation valve (with a slot for a flat-head screw driver) 'across' the pipe to shut off the water to the cistern. In my case, it was a piece of limescale that had got stuck on the seal of the flush mechanism, so some repeated flushes, while holding down the button for longer finally got rid of it.

For the toilet there are 2 likely causes.
    1) Either the float isn’t rising enough to close the water valve fully.
    2) Or the valve that fills the tank is faulty and it is constantly trickling regardless what position the float is in.
Hopefully it’s 1) and you can adjust it yourself.
Gently pull up on the float to simulate a full cistern, that should close the valve and stop it running, sometimes that’s good enough to stop it for a few months.
If the cause is the valve not closing at all, then it’s worth getting a plumber out to save you money on your water bill in the long run!

I like Ikea furniture because the instructions are the clearest I have seen of any company, and getting missing screws etc is easy.
However, I WILL NEVER BUY ANY METAL FURNITURE FROM IKEA AGAIN: the quality of those are the crappiest I have ever seen!
For example, it took 3 guys, one of them a carpenter, to put together chair legs on a simple stool that should have been a child's play, and I had to throw away a filing cabinet because the pieces didn't fit together and the metal sheet was bent (the whole thing was made of flimsy aluminium sheet); I ended buying my own metal nuts and bolts because, again, the plastic plugs provided didn't work. Well, ONE out of the 50 did.
FYI I have been putting up DIY furniture for decades, from simple stools to whole bedroom and living room suites, by different companies: it's one thing I feel confident to say the fault is not at this end.
