this is incredible thank you! I've been doing propagation for a while, mostly by trial and error, but this is such a succint explanation for so many questions I've had! Learning more about how plants grow helps us to be more intuitive plant caretakers and hopefully better earth caretakers in the process. thank you!
I’ve had the most success with propagating the top portion since it already is growing from the top, it just has to focus on creating new roots. My mid cuttings do okay, my theory is they have to create BOTH a growing top and roots on the bottom.
I keep fish tanks and for cuttings, use the water I condition (takes out chlorine and other more caustic chemicals from the tap) for my fish. My cuttings love this. I also use the water I remove from my tanks to water my plants, including my FLF, Fiona.
Love your info on these gorgeous plants. I've had mine for a long time but it is a ways a way from a south facing window and some of the lower leaves are dropping. I'm wanting to prune or notch or both- what would you suggest for this beauty ?? Would like to send a picture for you but not sure how to do that.
Thank you so much! It sounds like it may need more light. Are you able to shift it so it is sitting directly in front of and up against your brightest window? Bottom most leaves will naturally droop over time. I would wait until the plant is really healthy and thriving and growing new leaves before considering pruning / notching. Pruning is much more successful. You can cut at the point where you want branches to grow. The main stem will no longer get taller, but the branches that form will! Ok I’m confused about the propagation of FLF, I broke a leaf off my plant and put it in hormone and placed it in water. I got really good results lots of roots. But now I’m reading when I plant it, it won’t grow into a plant. I see pictures of a single leaf in water, but why bother if the end result is nothing. What am I misunderstanding?
I allways use a dirty knife, dirty glas/used and never have i used roothormone. i have nevere failded i juste got to new branches on my Fiddle. took the "crown" and put that in water and 4 weeks later i got roots, same thing with two of my Dracaena Fragrans Janet Lind. i have never bouth a plant i got it from my neighbors who throw it in the recycler. My Dracaena Fragrans Janet Lind is about 140 cm tall, i use (Advanced nutrians Sensi Bloom Part B & A) it makes my PH around 5.7 and i use aquarium water PH 7. Btw my Fiddle have groth 6 new leafs in just 5 weeks and the 7th is starting to show up. Are my plants on sterodids or is it the nutrians ? i have allways used aquarium water and im frome sweden and in my region we have soft clean water that has not been Clean with chemicals, weary luckey for me who have 8 aquariums
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant just bought my first at Lowes at the 50% off area...Christina at the store was super helpful had sent me home with peat, potting soil and a new larger home for her....poor baby was so root bound...ill take before and after pics....a few bent leave but she showed me how to prune the problems....ill watch your vid over and over till i have it memorized...thanks so much aamikes20000
Is the soil compacted and the water drains quickly out the bottom drainage holes? I recommend aerating the soil and ensuring the water is draining properly down into the root system before draining out the bottom drainage holes. This content is so helpful! I have gone through 3 fiddle leaf fig plants in the past 24 mos, I tend to either over or under nurture. How can I save my plant that has lost all but three leaves, I believe caused by moving it to different locations? Is it too late for me at this point?
It's never too late! Move it to the brightest spot in the house and leave it be. Water when the top few inches of soil are dry and make sure it drains well so the roots do not stay too wet. I have seen many success stories of plants flourishing back to health from just a bare stem!
Hi from the UK🇬🇧 don't give up on the fiddle leaf fig plant. All the leaves fell off my expensive plant leaving a stem☹🙄. I took 4 cuttings off the stem, dipped the bottom of each cutting in root hormone powder and left them in water. I used spring water as I live in hard water area. 2 wks later buds and tiny white spots, the beginnings of roots are appearing on each. I left the 4 cuttings, 2 by kitchen window(gets indirect sun in am) and 2 by living rm(sun in afternoon). I turn the cuttings in their containers and the main pot regularly so they get sunlight all around. The remainder of the main stem in the pot is also budding. I have a plant feeder, a glass ball which I fill with water and leave in the plant pot. This works for me. I find the soil for this plant goes dry very quickly. So really keep your eye on soil. Place finger deep down in soil, in 4 different areas around the pot or invest in a soil meter to test the soil. My plant lost its leaves due to underwatering and overwatering and a lack of understanding about this lovely plant. Once you find the place in the home the plant likes, do leave it there. The main plant likes to be on my living rm windowsill. It has been on landing, hallway, bedrm, kitchen and in the living room but away from the window. None of those places worked. 🤔. Good luck.
One of the branches on my Phyllis broke so i placed it in water to begin the propagation process and the leaves have fallen and they are curling ,the two that are left. What should i do?

Are cutting leaves able to propagate roots and grow new plants?
As long as the cutting has a node, it can grow roots and into a new plant.
I love how you explain the information you provide. Personal stories always help.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love it. I had to take notes because this had so much good information.
Nice info - pictures of the process might have been helpful to view places to cut and depth in containers.
Great suggestion! It's been noted.
Amazingly thorough video. You are a life saver!

It is true that a leaf that grows roots will not be roots to sustain a plant. The leaf needs a node to grow roots that will turn into a plant.
I am grateful for the information you hv shared.
Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks for this! Do you add more rooting hormon to the water if you do change it?
Thanks !Great way to explain steps!!
Glad you liked it

What do you do with a rooted fiddle leaf fig that has roots.
Why is my fiddle leaf plant drying up and leafs are getting soft in water and not root coming.
