  • The video argues that the elite, represented by the civil military bureaucracy developed during colonial times, is the principal hurdle to the development of democracy in Pakistan.
A summary of the work of Andrew Wilder, "The Pakistani Voter, Electoral Politics and Voting Behaviour in the Punjab" (Oxford University Press 1999).

If electing your leader means it's "democracy" (as Wilder would suggest) then why were Britishers ousted who introduced elections? Did we "elect" the British or the East India Company? That's the point! They gave us elections and electoral system. Why didn't we keep them here?

Wonderful crash course in history with rational analysis of our failures. The same elite vadera class was the driving force behind One Unit because Bengalis wanted large scale land reforms based on Indian model. Obviously, whenever there was a clash of interest, this elite class won using army, bureaucracy and lately judiciary; at the cost of poor Awam (who are getting poorer and powerless with each passing day).😢

You are forgetting another important player: the Maulvi. Yes, it is true that only the elite benefits but the subordination of the masses is largely non-coercive and without apparent force. Religion is central to the enterprise. By a fascist reworking of Islam, people are divided into cults and any prospect of a united front is forever averted. The irrationality dominant throughout Pakistan has robbed people of any sense of themselves, their surroundings and history. It is really sad

Simple answer is that Muslim league was dominated by elites from the start and when they got Pakistan, they imposed elitist mindset of holding power which lead to their failure. Elites in bureaucracy, military and other institutions never want to curb their power in interest of nation. Pakistan's first constituent assembly didnot have single person from worker class. You'll find sahibzada, chaudhary, sardar dominating all cabinets of provinces later on also. Elites can never solve problems of worker class.
