Vintage Locomotives Collection - Mail Unboxing - Will They Start?

  • Around a week or so ago this box arrived in the mail, and I've been looking forward to opening it however I wasn't expecting for there to be a collection of eleven different vintage locomotives. I decided to test them all out to see if any worked but most seem to be just projects for the time being. Most have pretty simple drive systems so I think they all have a pretty high chance of riding the rails again soon.

SMT’s basement, where dead locos go when no one wants them anymore.
I wonder if your place turns into Toy Story when you leave and turn the lights off….
Loco 1: So newbie, why are you here?
Loco 2: I lost some wheels and I’m full of carpet fibres. My previous owner gave up on me and sent me here.
Loco 1: You’re in good hands now. This kid fixes anything. See that old chugger over there? He came in last week, rusted, no light, motor was full of spider eggs, and full of thick paint. Now, he squeals around the layout.
    Loco 2: When do you think he… what… the… heck… is… that….?
Loco 1: Ah, that’s Nerf cat. Just play dead. He’ll leave you alone.

That Rivarossi 0-8-0 with the missing front plate won't run without it's tender, BTW. Rivarossi loved putting their pickups on the tender wheels and using the drawbar connection to transmit electricity to the motor in the engine itself, and the 0-8-0 is no exception

I believe they made more Indiana Harbor Belt 102 than any other locomotive. It did have alternate road productions, but that was specifically a IHB switcher.

It's an 0-6-0 switcher with tender. You can tell it was used for industries and docks by the two sand domes on each side of the steam dome. The other 0-6-0 is a saddletank version. GT #5511 is a GP9 highnose.

Very cool lot Harrison! Those old Lionels should make for good runners once parts are located for them, don't know if aftermarket wheels would work or not with these particular models though. Those old all wheel drive Bachmann F units are surprisingly tough, I might have mentioned this once before, but I bought an FT some years back at a yard sale for only 25 cents, it looks like it rolled out of a "Fallout" video game, but it runs pretty good, so your Amtrak F unit should make for a decent runner!

What an incredible lot. Such a very nice gift from an unknown sender. I agree with someone who mentioned to look at the newspapers and see if they give any kind of date and/or location. Would be interesting. I think it is funny how you always look through the plastic to see what it is before you actually open it all the way. Reminds me of those who give a package a little shake to try to guess what it is. Love it.
Question: I am a lover of trains and watching them rrun, even though I do not own any. So my question is, "What is the difference between an engine and a locomotive, if any?" I really enjoy watching your channel. I am always amazed at how you repair/restore each of the non-running trains, knowing the fact that you are self taught. I have been watching your channel for quite some time now and always watch in fascination. Thank you so very much for sharing your 'amazingl talent'.i call it the "Harrison magical touch." I appreciate how you always take the time to answer my questions or acknowledge that I commented. ❤😊❤🇺🇸

i find it funny, only the 2 engines that were missing a set of trucks wanted to run but couldn't, while the others had trucks but didn't want to run. they all seem like easy projects and should be a snap for you to repair. The bicentennial Alco Century 630 with the high short hood is interesting. Only Norfolk and Western had them in that configuration with the high short hoods. They had ten. Number 1135 is the only N & W Alco Century 630 preserved and one of only three C630 that are still extant. One Union Pacific C630 is preserved and one Reading Company Century 630 is preserved and operational.

I gotta question for you. Is ho scale trains more or less expensive than rc airplanes. Right now I'm into rc airplanes have been for 5 years. In those five years I've spent almost 28 thousand dollars on rc plane. Would it be cheaper to try model railroading before I was into planes from age 2 all the way to age 23 I was into trains. Do you think it would be cheaper to go back to trains. Is it now days cheaper or more expensive.

I'm not super knowledgeable on the cost of model airplanes so I don't have much to compare to however I will say the prices of things in model railroading have gone up quite a bit. It's still possible to do it cheap but a high end modern locomotive will cost you $300+. A lower end one $50.
