  • On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey gives his thoughts on the Steelers' wants vs. needs in the NFL draft. Is the hole at center one that simply must be filled by a player like Jackson Powers-Johnson or Graham Barton? Or could this draft class still be a successful one of a less glaring need like tackle is addressed with names like JC Latham, Amarius Mims, Taliese Fuaga or Troy Fautanu?
Jason tackles those questions, then pivots to Pirates. Is Paul Skenes' MLB debut creeping forward a bit, possibly to as soon as next weekend? Are changes coming with young players who aren't performing, including Jack Suwinski and Henry Davis? And could we see the return of Nick Gonzales sooner than later, now that he's tearing up Class Triple-A pitching with the Indianapolis Indians?

I trade back to 25 with GreenBay but I also add our 2nd pick and 6th round pick for their 25th, 41st pick and a 4th and maybe a 5th. But lets just trade back in 1st trade up in the 2nd and gain an extra 4th and 5th. We draft whatever OT is left yes 1 of the top 4 will fall to 25. Then with the 2nd we get any of the 3 Cs left. Then with that 4th and 5th we draft Jerry Rice son and McCafferney brother both WRs we can develope . Filling out CB, DL, LB and or WR with our 3rd, 4th, and 6th

Time to eat our veggies and pick that center. Not sexy but very necessary.

no one wants Dan Moore playing LT again but they genuinely don't have anyone to play center. They could draft a RT on Day 2 that may be better at RT than Moore is at LT which allows Jones to play LT.
Center, WR, RT feels like the best case scenario.

Idk, I kinda reject the premise that we know that Dan Moore at T will hurt the offense less than Nate Herbig at C

It's like building a custom car. The Steelers want the shiny paint, under lighting, airbag suspension, Hoopdie wheels, and a Booming sound system. Anything that catches the eye. "Look at me!". They neglect to build the engine, or enhance performance, thus the car looks great, but performs worse than before it was touched.

Yeah, because trading up for Broderick Jones wasn't going towards the engine last year. The "Steelers" are under new management. Andy Wiedl from the Eagles built their team from the trenches...that's what they focused on last year. Benton and Jones. They have an all new scouting department, new GM, new Assistant GM...not the same old Steelers. Patrick Queen and completely flipping the QB room is not Steeler-like

@@ZacheryZimmerman-uk4ti Tomlin is still the coach correct? That’s not new management as far as the team goes. Look just because I can drive a car, doesn’t mean I can drive a Lamborghini at 250 mph. Same for MT.

@timothyakus "Management" Mike Tomlin is the head coach. Omar Khan and Andy Wiedl have the ultimate approval on draft picks. Tomlin manages the team that is given to him by the GM and Assistant GM. The team is "managed" by the General MANAGER. Your metaphor makes no sense because the "flashy" player or "Lamborghini" would be WR or CB. AD Mitchell/Brian Thomas Jr. Cooper DeJean/Quinton Mitchell. There is nothing that catches the eye about an OT or any olineman pick in the 1st round.

@@ZacheryZimmerman-uk4ti I agree. However I just don’t feel it. My confidence is in doubt when the “driver” of the car hasn’t won a playoff game in 7 years. ( btw I’m really enjoying a debate that doesn’t involve slander)

@timothyakus I think your just a Tomlin hater lol. I understand he wasn't won a playoff game in 7 years, but did you have realistic expectations for those teams? How many of those teams were expected to even make playoffs? How many of those teams suffered impactful injuries before the playoffs? Examples..Ryan Shazier. AB. Leveon Bell. Bud Dupree and 2 or 3 other starters on defense the year we started 12-0. Yeah, they are excuses because they are injuries, but they were all impactful. TJ Watt with the Bills. I could argue that each team that made the playoffs, shouldn't have been there in the first place because Tomlin coached them above their expectations. The only reason they have expectations are because of the logo. A lot of coaches don't have rings or playoff wins with Brady and Mahomes in their prime.

Barton hasnt played Center in 3 years. And there are 2 stud centers that can fall to 20 like JPJ and Frazier.
Why are we in love with Barton all of a sudden??

    • @AFL67pitt
      @AFL67pitt Месяц назад

Because he’s the best interior lineman in the draft and if he can’t play center now he will eventually and can start at Guard immediately

This is why this team is stuck in the middle. Needs all the time over a good player. They need a tackle. The need was created by signing Cole for 2 million two years ago and not signing Morse or a center in free agency.

lets reach and draft an average football player
of course trading up to get him is smarter
lets not win a playoff game for another 10 yrs

The strengths of the draft align pretty well with the weaknesses of the team.
