  • On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey answers reader questions. Among them: Does the Pirates' Dave Parker belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame? Should manager Derek Shelton be on the hot seat after back-to-back ugly losses that included big blown leads? Should GM Ben Cherington consider a trade for a first baseman amid recent struggles by Rowdy Tellez and Connor Joe? And why hasn't Tellez been DFA'd yet?
Jason tackles those questions, plus more on other fronts. Including: When will Penguins GM Kyle Dubas make his first trade of the offseason? Would it be a disappointment if the Steelers start worse than 3-0? And Can West Virginia's Beanie Bishop win the slot cornerback role as an undrafted free agent?

Find me another baseball team that rewards failure the way Nutting does. The Rockies, MAYBE?

Absolutely not changing pitchers till the game was tied, 5 straight hits.

Sheltons career winning percentage is .404 . That ranks 345th of 365 among big league managers ALL TIME. The reason why there are only 20 managers with a worse career winning percentage is anybody that bad gets fired. The question isn’t whether Shelton should be fired, it’s why he hasn’t already been fired.

Never seen someone have a bigger leash for being a loser than Shelton. When the Phillies got rid of Giraldi that was what made them super good. One world series appearance, two conference titles and now their the best team in baseball. Had the same roster but with Giraldi they went nowhere.

We’re past that. He should have been fired two years ago.
Cherington should be fired at season’s end.

Pretty obvious the GM doesn't know what hes doing.

I'm sure the GM would love to pay $20M for a 1B, but since that's not in the budget allocated to him, you get Tellez for $3M. You people talk like front offices enjoy having to bargain shop. The amount of money to spend comes directly from ownership.

Well, the GM did that in Boston with Pablo Sandoval and got $hit canned for it, leaving the Red Sox to pay about $40 million to Sandoval to play for the Giants. Cherington is clueless.

QUESTION: How difficult has it been connecting with Steeles fans, non-Pirates fans, outside of the Pittsburgh market? Primarily the fans that don't see you with Pomp or follow the Pirates - I think there may be a significant audience that have found only you through the Pirates up until your recent promotion..

If they won’t dfa Tellez, no way Shelton is going anywhere.

The answer to both questions is, bec's the games don't matter to GMBC, and Bob Nutting. As long as they're on a trajectoral analytical path (likely to a destination that will never be reached), that's all that matters.

  • @bobross1829

Yes him and all the coaches. He seems like a good guy personally, but the players clearly do not listen to or respect the coaches. Hayes now seems like he takes off a month twice a year. Reynolds disappears two months every year. Chapman clearly does not care. A 14 year vet hall of famer knows how to throw strikes. He does not care. Other teams clearly always have the drop on them. No adjustments ever made. No one gets better or improves. The players can "say" anything they want, the proof in on the field. If they really liked and respected the manager and coaches they would play better and try harder. They are not.

Pomeranz is now a free agent and appears to be healthy. He would be a nice addition to the pen and relatively cheap. If this front office is serious about winning like they say then prove it by taking a step in the right direction by dfaing tellez and signing Pomeranz.

    • @thebourg
      @thebourg 23 дня назад

Lol. Pomeranz hasn't pitched in the majors in 3 years! He was released by 2 teams including the Angels. I wouldn't exactly say signing him indicates being "serious!"

  • @stevej.1428

Why would he be in trouble? Pirates are right where ownership and this FO wants them to be. Shelton is running things perfectly to the script. At this rate Tellez should be hitting sometime in August and the bullpen should find it's groove by mid September. Just in time to be a full 15 games out of a wildcard with new hopes of competitive baseball in 2025.

Hayes has had 3 good months in career, on the DL at least once a year. Trade him and some prospects for a quality 1st baseman or outfielder give Pequerro a try there. Triollo's bat just doesn't play. Cruz to the outfield in the offseason
