- Here’s how to play Shooting Star, a song by Bad Company. I did an earlier lesson on the solo, but a few people have asked for the chords, so here they are; intro, verse, chorus, and bridge. I threw in a little theory at the end, because I thought it was somewhat unique despite being simple. Pretty neat! So that's the video; How to Play Shooting Star by Bad Company - Intro, Chords & Theory.
0:00 Demo & Introduction

One of my favorite bad company songs.
Yes, definitely a good one!
When you were showing the bridge chords I kept hearing in my mind, “hold….my….hand…😂
LOL!
I actually enjoyed this one.
Great.
Great lesson for a great song, thank you sir! And bonus you threw in a little theory to show how it all works. Excellent!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What an awesome lesson, it's good how you explain the chord progression and every little notes/chords used. Keep it up Mark!! Cheers
Thanks! Will do!
Mark is the greatest he is a fabulous teacher
Thanks a ton Dennis!!!
From Leo: Thanks for the great lesson. I had pretty much forgotten that song, and I like it. You did a great job with all the instructing, clear and broken into simple sections. You have the teaching gift for sure.
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed the video.
Your lessons are awesome. You explain it all in a way I can grasp so easily! Thank you for these videos!
Glad you like them Mark!
Love this song. Very good lesson Mark. Excellent breakdown of the parts.
Thanks so much Frank!
Such a beautiful/ Classic Song…
FANTASTIC LESSON! Thank you Mark!
Thanks Doug!
Hi Mark, Thanks for adding in the explanation about the 1, 5 and flatted 7th chords. This helps me to understand my confusion with keys occasionally.
You're very welcome!
Nice lesson Mark. Working on double stop hammer ons this morning and wanted to revisit this one.
Good one to revisit! Thanks Mike!
Thank you for your reply on the strumming patterns,it big help to me,Thank you again.
You're very welcome!
Great Video! Didn't think I would care for the theory part, but it was interesting. Thanks
Thanks!
Hey Mark Awesome Lesson My favorite Bad Company Thankyou For the Lesson Keep it Up Awesome Lessons You Got
Thanks so much!
Very cool Mark! Thanks for adding in the explanation about the 1, 5 and flatted 7th chords. It was interesting. I've never given that sequence any thought until today. Definitely an eye opener (and ear). Always wanted to learn this song but never got the chance. Thanks! So many great Bad Co. songs. That's a nice PRS Mira you have. I just purchased an SE Santana myself. Great guitars period. Take care and as always, Aloha frm Hawaii.
Thanks. Yes, it's a really simple sequence, but it doesn't happen that often. I've come to the conclusion that PRS is the best - at least for me. Scale, quality, comfort, sound(s), and choice of neck profile - all good for me. Just the way the fingerboards are perfectly rolled is an indication of putting care into the design and build. I love my Gibsons, but have to admit I would gig with the PRS guitars as they're just easier.
Mark, you always have good stuff to share, thanks , hope all is well.
Thanks so much. I'm doing very well and hope you are too! Thanks for stopping by!
Just found your channel. Awesome I loved your Billy Squire Lonely Is The Night lesson. I used to play that back in the 80’s and your approach was perfect.
Thanks a bunch Brian. Welcome!!
Johnny was a school boy when he herd his first Beatles song.
Love me do I think from there it didn’t take him long.
Cool. Looking for a medley of Bad Co. songs and this works.
Many thanks.
No problem!
I just learned this tune this week... ooohps !
I meant two weeks back. This week was ac/dc's hi-way to hell solo and blackbird with paul Mc's finger strumming technique. LOL funny thing is I don't even like ac/dc I mean I don't like all that darkness fro the lyrics but angus is a phenomenon that begs some study.. raw power!
LOL!
Great lesson, thanks.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Great lesson. Thanks Mark.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it Bruce!
great song..
Agree.
Great explanation of so many songs around the same chords nice one 👍
Glad you liked it!
I like how you teach, thanks man
I appreciate that!
thanks Mark Z for your theory explanation, and stroll down rock history lane… I enjoyed it !
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Love that PRS!
Me too! I'm definitely digging it.
Mark great job as always...
I appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
PRS huh? Very nice and great color.
I liked it ... didn't love it. Sold it a couple of years ago. Good guitar.
YOUR AWESOME MARK I ENJOYED THE ENTIRE VIDEO. MOST MAY NOT REALIZE HOW MUCH INFORMATION YOU JUST SHARED. I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO GET INTO THE HENDRIXY FEEL OF THE INTRO A BIT. I GET IT IT BUT LIKE I SAID SOME / THE BEGINNERS MAY NOT. SO COULD YOU SHOOT A VIDEO ON THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN HENDRIX AND THE INTRO. THANKS MARK. YOUR APPRECIATED!!!!!!
Thanks so much Sonny!! That's a great suggestion!
Thanks Mark 👍.
My pleasure John. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this lesson :)
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
the way you teach the chords with theory is great thank you
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching and for the helpful feedback!
@@MarkZabel Yeah keep it going we need more of this, thank you
Another great lesson Mark. I just got my first Les Paul a few months ago and I have been on a Allman Brothers, Free and Bad Company vibe ever since. Great band but I always get a little sad with Bad Company because it came into existence with the falling out of Andy Fraser and Paul Kossoff with Free. I really love PK playing. Anyway thanks as always.
Thanks. Oh yeah, PK was a great early player and more influential than people generally know. He's my kind of player - doesn't play huge flurries of notes, but is really inventive with space and his phrasing. PK is a sad case as well with how he ended up. But we have some of his music to enjoy, so at least there's that!
@@MarkZabel 100%
I enjoyed this video very good tu.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
Thank you my friend
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Hey Mark, love your lessons. And surprise! First time I've seen you play the PRS Mira SE. I own a Mira in black with the marbled cherry pick guard. Great guitar!
Thanks! The PRS Mira SE is a great guitar. I ended up selling mine, because I have too many guitars! Rock on!
I liked the theory part. Like you said there are lots of songs that use the ♭VII (borrowed from the parallel minor) - one I played recently is Fooled Around and Fell in Love which goes | I | iii | ♭VII | IV |
Oh, that's a great one!
The flat VII chord is borrowed from the A mixolydian scale, and a guitarist would play notes from the D major scale over the G. A number of songs in A major sub a G in place of the G#dim to give A-D-E-G in various arrangements.
Very nice Mark, sharp guitar as well. I’d love a lesson on Bad company’s oh how I wept Please
Thanks ... and thanks for the suggestion too!
And I'm really falling in love with this PRS Mira!
I think that song is by Free
@@kevinrich5312 you’re right, thanks !
Nice guitar
I liked it okay. It was very light and well-balanced, like all PRS guitars seem to be. I sold it a couple years back. I remember it wasn't that expensive and played great!
How's it going Mark? Just was playing a few BadCo songs and their you were.
Going well brother!
Close enough for rock-n-roll. Due to the effects, antiquated recording quality and the overall mixing of all instruments and vocals, it’s a little hard to hear everything going on. There are definitely lots of little subtleties in the rhythm parts all through the song. It helps to listen to it with some good quality earbuds. When you do, you’ll especially notice those “bad ass” bass lines as well. There are at least two acoustic guitars going and they don’t always go to G in the verse. Sometimes one of them does a D shuffle instead. Seems like the bass mostly goes to the G though. They also do a little blues shuffle on the A and the even on the G at certain times. Sorry if I’m complicating everything lol.
This is by no means meant to be note for note (aside from the intro more or less) and to cover both electric and acoustic. I could have mentioned the acoustics go to D - the ordinary 4 chord - sometimes rather than the b7 chord. Thanks.
drsmith I agree with your comment on the D chord acoustic version & the G note the bass picks up. To my ear, the compromise is a D over G where your thumb grabs the G bass note (ala Eric Clapton) when playing the D in the verse chords.
Marty Krueck I do the same except I like to use my middle finger to grab the G instead of my thumb.
Liked and subscribed… ditto on all the comments
Thanks!
nice rhythm job
Thanks Trucker Kev!
Hey mark do you think you could do a tutorial on the solo and chords to Huey Lewis Walking on a thin line .
Sounds good. I'll put it on the list of songs to consider doing. Thanks for the suggestion.
More theory please!
You got it!
Hi Mark! Did you keep this beautiful Mira SE? What are your thoughts about it?
Hi Lucase. I sold it to a friend. Enjoyed the guitar, but it needed a new home. Definitely a great guitar.
Hi Mark,is there strum patterns for verses and chorus?I am just curious,it sound like there some strum patterns for verses,Iam trying get song down, Thank you,James
Hi James. The pattern on the verse is more or less: Down, Down, Chuck-a, chuck-a over each chord. For the chorus it's Down chuck-a down, chuck-a, down, chuck-a, down.
Love it when you talk dirty with music theory. Also purty geetar!
LOL! Hilarious!!
Mark, please excuse my ignorance but how is the gMaj chord a flatted 7th?
Great question! It's a description of the chord progression and not the chord "flavor" itself. For this you need the so-called "number system". (This is where you've probably heard the blues is a I, IV, V or that jazz uses lots of II, V, I progressions.)
Here we have a song who's home base is A. The key of A has the following 7 notes: A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#. Thus, A=1, B=2, C#=3, D=4, E=5, F#=6, and G#=7. You'll note there's no G in the key of A. The VII is G#. Thus, the note G is a flatted G# and is therefore the flatted 7th in the key of A.
That's pretty much it. Music has a ton of jargon in it, and it's tough to get through it sometimes. Hope this clears it up!
@@MarkZabel ahh💡💡I see, thanks for the clarification! Great lessons Mark!,
@@edge1289 Awesome ... and thanks!
still trying to get a understanding on the 1 1V V thing ?? but bad company had some good tunes or progreshions jeepers im a little slow..nice lesson thank you markZ
Sure thing brother!
Thumbs up.
Thanks!
Hi Mark, would please reply to me about strum patterns on Verses please?,it would be a big help,Thank you so much.
Done. See response.
Mark you are great I want to learn chords etc solo to bad company shooting star check out live version Paul Rodger’s singing with queen in pars Brian may lead guitarist at a point does neat power chords I think playing in open in Ukraine on utube .i am a subscriber I know it’s naive I’m using my iPad how do i download the the tabs etc on chords solo you say down load but on iPad no markers ?…..
Thanks. I'm sorry, I'm not sure how the download would work on an iPad. You would probably need a utility to unzip the files.
Don't listen to Kyle Carrington 😤. I'm a beginner and I find it very interesting learning from you
Thanks! Glad it was helpful for you.
I'm going to stick to this channel I'm already playing. How cool it's that.
Looks like youre fingerpicking part of it though.
great lesson, and thanks, but itd be even better if you actually played the rhythm while you taught it instead of busting it up into an unrecognizable thing. play it thru, then break it down. had to have the song in the other window to actually remember how it really sounded
That’s not the way he’s playing it! It’s cool but
It that’s not how he’s playing it!
Obviously your a good player, but as in your instruction of the verse... when you never actually play the music in time, or a proportional slowed down fraction of time... theres nothing correct about the song fir the beginner. Its fine to teach it slow, but keep your vocals and guitar synced... its brutal to learn from a chopped up, stretched, out of sync version that by no means resembles the real tune. Immediately one has to refer to the real song to get any concept of how its actually played in time!
Thanks for the feedback. Maybe it's not a beginner lesson. In any event, one shouldn't attempt to learn the song on guitar without knowing the song first. So perhaps that's the key lesson here if you're a beginner - listen to the song and know it before attempting to play it.
I couldn't find where the video was out of sync. It's all in sync when I view it.
