Great vid! I laughed so hard about the "tap-in" on 17th. Unless im coming over a bunker or something i tend to use the same club, 8 iron for all my bump and runs, i noticed you switch clubs according to the slope uphill or downhill etc. I kinda know how the ball is going to land and run with the 8 iron every time whereas i would have to learn 2 or 3 other clubs for the same shot. Im not saying either way is wrong or right or better it just works for me. Btw ive got a pretty decent short game. My putting was dire for a while it just left me and i was missing 2 footers and leaving lag putts halfway. I had a putting lesson from the pro and omg! Ive started getting birdies again and short putts? I love 'em! I highly recommend a putting lesson to anyone struggling. Love this channel, keep em coming! 👍👍

Hi Finbar, nice little cut off there on 17. Because the camera makes me slow I just want to keep moving so sometimes I just don't finish it off. As I practice 4 footers all the time I know I don't miss them often. I knock a lot in back handed or one handed. I just use 2 clubs then I only have to practice 2 clubs. The one I got wrong was on 18 when I used the sandy instead of the pitch. That was a mistake. I always say just use 2 clubs, one up and over and the other run out. It doesn't matter which 2 clubs people use. Not going to tell anyone to stop using their favourite club. I had an issue with short ones a long time ago, I just wasn't commiting to a line properly. I'd over borrow and then hit it through the break. Long putts I think is tension and I think that tension comes from not practicing short putts. Inside 4 feet. Just a guess. Cheers

@@thehairygolfer I was decelerating through the ball on my putting and leaving everything short or dying lowside of the hole. Pretty much the opposite to you lol. I didn't even realise I was doing it. And yes when you feel confident on the short ones there is definitely less tension on the lag putts.

Hello Kev, no idea why the lag putting is decent. I used to practice it a long time ago but put no effort in now. I guess it's second nature or automatic now. Not every round but most of the time. I miss so many greens and when I started I could miss 17 greens. I'm certainly getting the practice!

Excellent video and considering you're still work in progress, a pretty good score around a pretty golf course, particularly that 146 yard par-3!
How I envy your short game! To be that consistent throughout your round is great to watch. And your chipping process is so simple - straight back, straight through, bingo!!!
Add to that proficient lag putting and you have the recipe to turn pigs ears into silk purses, allowing you to still score well despite "grey areas" in the long game (I think that's a "note to self" there!).

As you have seen i'm using the entire face of the club. It feels awful and at least in this round I didn't lose anything unlike wednesday when I lost 2 balls. Plus a whole host of other rubbish.
I've always enjoyed spending time chipping and I used to spend time lagging. I still chip but I don't bother putting now, only the 4 footers.

  • @alangoudie2299

The video emphasised how vital the short game is for getting a good score.
You can make up from poor shots by finishing well.
Fortunately older golfers can develop the short game to make up for a loss of distance from earlier shots.
I noticed you regularly use very few clubs around the green.
    I use my 5H, 6H, 8 H as well as irons 9 to SW.
My selection depends on what the ground, slope , distance etc. I have to play.
As an 81 year old , 26 handicap golfer would you advise me to reduce my choice of clubs.
I used to use a 42* chipper, but that limited my choice.
    Thank you.

Hello Alan, I had no idea what would happen and it just turned into a chip n putt video by chance. Much of videos do that, start one thing and end up another.
Yes, I do just use 2 clubs round the green, that's all I have time to practice. I figure be good with 2 rather than average with 4. We are all different though and I would never tell anyone to not use 4 clubs or more.
If I was to offer any advice I'll stick with what I've said several times in different videos. One club to go up to a raised green or over a bunker. One club to run out. Plus a 3rd for further out. Then fiddle with ball position until you are happy.
Back in the old days Pros would use a load of different clubs. Now they all seem to use a 60 for everything. I think osmewhere in the middle for us. Is that okay?

    • @alangoudie2299
      @alangoudie2299 3 месяца назад +2

Thank you for your advice. I will give it a try.
Today I played 14 practice holes trying to improve my fade instead of a draw.
No pressure .Average driver distance 148 yards.
If I had been putting in a card for a handicap it would have worked out as 16 off the red tees.
Choice play off the reds & score well or struggle to beat 100 off the yellow tees.
      Your 7 iron goes a lot further than my 125 yard 5 & 7woods.
You play a different game to me.
HOWEVER I HAVE NOT DIED YET & STILL PLAYING.
Tonight I played 2 hours of single table tennis to round off the day.
That is why I only played 14 holes in the afternoon.
I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR COMMON SENSE ADVICE, WHICH IS DEFINITELY ENCOURAGING ME.
Tomorrow afternoon 2 & a half hours of lawn tennis doubles.
OVER THE BUNKER IS MY ALIEN 60 * LOB WEDGE.
NEED TO SORT OUT THE OTHER 2 CLUBS.
POSSIBLY USE MY 42 * CLEVELAND SMART SOLE CHIPPER FOR MOST CHIP SHOTS.
Have you heard the saying He's got all the gear but no idea.

@@alangoudie2299 Good grief Alan. You are far more active than me which explains the belly. Can't wait to retire and have some more free time instead of bashing a keyboard for work.
The Alien is a beast of a club, good choice. 42 chipper is ideal too, that has a putter length shaft in it?
Talking of all the gear but no idea. I played with my nieces husband who had just taken up the game. I turned up with my battery trolley, all the gear, matching bag as you have seen and he gave me heartache. All the gear and no idea. I told him I was a 5 handicap which didn't mean a thing to him. Par 5 1st got a birdie. Very short par 4 next, 4 iron and gap wedge, got a birdie and it started to dawn on him he may have been wrong. I ran out at 7 over as the course gets harder. A number I was very pleased with. Made me laugh, don't know what he shot, a zillion I think. He quit golf shortly after. It's easier on the play station apparently.
