Yes, it's very hard for you guys in the frozen north. To have that enforced and lengthy break must be very hard. Getting started again and getting back to around your handicap must be very very difficult. I do count my blessings from time to time. I can still walk a hilly course and I still have just enough length to keep around a 6 handicap. Not for much longer I guess. Cheers

She accompanies me around that courses here and we've found bags of balls and I keep some scuffed Pro V1's for playing in poor conditions. I have hundreds of almost brand new balls waiting for play.
It's nice being able to play golf cheaply at someone else's expense. Caddies do have great eyesight, I've got to thank mine today for finding a ball in the deep stuff. Right next to one of those giant staked trees. I don't know why they do that in Thailand but I'm very grateful!

Hello Max, (I've got to call you Max). There is huge amount of choice out there. I watch others and they don't seem to attempt to describe a hole and still do very well. There doesn't seem to be any given formula for doing well. This summer, if you can call it a summer, was pretty depressing at times. Certainly got me down looking out the window at the rain. Cheers
Nothing feels like a Mizuno. They go in off the leading edge and off the back side. I just holed an 8 footer backwards yesterday. Now I've looked at the clip I just think what an idiot for doing that. I didn't think about what I was doing. Cheers
Kevin, I do play too fast because of not wanting to hold people up. All it takes is 5 seconds to put a decent thought in my mind. I need those 5 seconds to hit fairways. We all do.
Re winter scoring; I had my best scoring round of 2024 on November 17, after 5 weeks without any major rainfall where I live in Oxfordshire; naturally it's pissed it /frozen it down since. I was surprised/delighted to play so well and get rewarded for it this time of year. I'm fully retired, play quite a lot and was slightly disappointed I hadn't matched my 2023 best, to that point - I'm getting older and it's nice to match your career best. It's very easy for me to find excuses and I don't anticipate getting anywhere close for the next 6 months. We all have those streaky days, though.
Hello Brian, I struggle with the bounce on the green and then the bumpy putt. I don't worry about it, I just wait for spring. Well done on matching the score this time of year, it's not easy in the winter. I think getting older we are past getting a lower handicap but we can take a lot of pride in hanging on for as long as we can.
I did watch your videos before you starting playing the Herefordshire (my club) more frequently. But you always introduce a new perspective or theme in your videos.I think today it was the 3 foot putt.Which if we are honest we should never miss. Its the putt that creates the most anxiety because its the difference between getting a par or settling for bogey.Three or four of those in a round makes such a difference. The knock on effect leaks perhaps two more shots. Its a consistent margin and is the reason why good rounds don't happen often enough.Something to address for the Spring.Enjoy your sojourn in the sun.
Hello Mark, 3 footers, 4 footers used to scare me especially with a card in my hand. That is why it's 99% of my practice putting. First time I came to Thailand and had a caddy who gave me the line and then I still missed. That caddy really drilled it into me to aim directly at the point she had given. It's that cliche of aim small miss small. I conquered the fear with her help and managed to focus my mind. Now I just knock them in without worry.
That's interesting. The reason I mention it is because I have a new approach to putting that I think takes out all the anxiety (I won't bore you with details). So far it looks promising with a good majority of two putts.I now don't think about the dreaded three putt.I suppose the expectation of good outcomes is the handmaiden of increasing confidence.
@@markdavies3489 Confidence is everything. The main thought I have with long putts is to putt the ball to the hole and not beyond. I've seen that most 3 putts come from going past and then having that 6 foot downhill coming back. 2 foot short on a 40 footer is ideal. I think 3 putts comes from speed and not direction. I always say what works works. The ball doesn't care, the card and pencil doesn't care. Whatever you are doing to reduce 3 putts works and don't let anyone tell you to change. Knowing yourself breeds confidence. for sure.
Keep up the good work. I appreciate the irony and overall good humor. Also, what you said about other people's critique of your game is so true. The only person you should ever listen to is the golf pro you have paid good money to for lessons.
Thanks Michael. Years ago I was playing in a medal and a guy offered me some swing advice. I wasn't marking his card so didn't know his handicap so I asked. He said 23. I said when you get to 4 come back and I'll take a lesson. During a round of golf I would never offer another guy advice. In a competition I do my very best never to interrupt someone else's game. It is amusing when it happens though, advice in the comments. Makes me laugh. Cheers
Just found your Channel and subbed you and I are a lot alike golf has been my passion for almost 40 years I head out to play on my own all the time when I’m not working there’s nothing more appealing to me than an empty nice golf course to work on my game in fact I have a small channel my self that I film from my phone video shorts of my shot making when i play mostly for my own review of my technique and ill tell you after I upload some new video shorts its entertaining to see the number of views all though there’s not many so cheers and thanks for your efforts making vids and posting.
Hello Mike, thankyou very much. I don't watch the big boys on youtube, I stick with the small ones. I have learnt so much about equipment and editing etc from small channels. I promise I will come over and have a peek. Simon
Hi Simon, So glad you haven't thrown in the towel, you content is always so refreshing and relatable... I have the same take away issue, have done for years, it's a real battle to get the right feel, currently my feeling with it is I feel my hands are pushing the grip down and back on the swing arc, in addition to this the visual that the club head is outside the target line, it's the feel v real, but it really does help. I know you didn't want tips so think of the above as chat between two devoted Mizuno users. Just seen your "ahhh fu*k it, it's a gimme" actually had me laughing out loud, it was very funny. Have a great December Simon. Best regards Olly.
Hello Olly, I've been fiddling with the grip a little bit and trying to make the club and hands move correctly. Or in the correct order. When you get it right it's so satisfying. I hit my 7 iron 156 yards next to flag. Get it wrong and it's 142 yards right and into the front bunker. I'm sure you recognise those 2 results. Frustrating. Feel v real is something I was taught too. The Pro got me swinging properly and it felt like the swing path was way in to out when it was just correct. I wish he was still teaching! Fortunately I recorded a couple of lessons. I will be watching them back in the spring. Cheers and best of luck with the right feeling and swing thoughts.
Hi Simon, how very daring of you to fiddle with the grip, I try to keep it neutral but the left hand does get a little stronger at times, I guess at least we're aware of the takeaway issue, so we can keep an eye or two on it 👀. Ahh yes I'm very aware of the yardage issue, my 165 7i can easily become a 150 7i, but I tend to use back of green yardages in an attempt to miss the trouble at the front, even if it does been I have fewer birdie chances, I also have less bunker shots. Hopefully Thailand will bring some swing clarity and you'll be able to celebrate new found swing feels and less bunker visits 😉 Have the best time, kind regards Olly.
I played Katathong yesterday and the course and views took my breath away. Plus the trees, flowers, birds and giant butterflies. Add a 25 year old caddy who thinks you're a god because she usually caddies for old guys who hit it 170 yards and it's a perfect day. It's been grey and cloudy Robert which means cool and not much humidity. Good golfing weather. Thanks
@@robertcourt8593 5 rounds to go. I've got the weekend off now to catch up with some sleep and christmas shopping. No 6:30 alarm call for me tomorrow. Cheers.
Don't normally comment but many thanks for all your work to produce the content this year. Hopefully if you keep on plugging away eventually it'll become financially worthwhile. Not sure you do requests but I wonder if you get the time whether you'd consider playing Knighton Golf Club which I last played 45 years ago as a junior? Its a 9 holer, designed by Harry Vardon, and the green fees are a tenner. I was amazed to discover it still exists as it's the sort of club that has all but vanished elsewhere. Some amazing holes and views, if I remember correctly, including a par 5 where you hit your second into space......oh and Offa's Dyke runs through it! Sadly too far for me to travel for a round.
Hello Jim, that isn't too far from me and I'm a sucker for a 9 hole course. I just looked at the club website and the pictures are great. Plus I can make 2 different videos over the same course in one day out. Thankyou so much for the info. I will add it to the list. Oh boy I hope we get a dry year next year.
@@thehairygolfer Cheers! I look forward to your round. According to their website they still only take cash. I have vague memories of an honesty box.....
Hi Simon, I was truly shocked and saddened that you were thinking of throwing in the towel back in July. As one of your new loyal supporters of your channel, I get great pleasure watching your content and it would be a much sadder place without it and you. I only started to watch your channel as a result of Big Oggie as he recommended your content, he’s a brilliant bloke too and one whom I worried about to be honest. Please keep it going as you bring so much pleasure to me and other people than you would ever think possible. By the way Simon, we all have problems with our golf techniques and I would never advise you how to improve, as I’m not qualified to do so. As for Mizuno, I am disgusted that they did not support you when you are such a brand ambassador and supporter of their product. Keep it going mate, please 🙏🏻.
Paul, I think it was the weather if nothing else. I do worry about Big Oggie too. He was losing some weight and then had some back problems I think and now rarely takes part in his own videos. I wish him a better year coming up. I guess manufacturers must spend their budget wisely. They did sponsor someone else and he did nothing except take several bags of clubs for his mates and then went to Takamo. Loyalty can be better than views, what message does it send when a guy goes to the highest bidder?
please , please , please keep going , only thing keeping me going . Ive had sunny days / hospital appointments ... rainy days meant to be golf days !! Thank goodness for driving ranges ! Btw Haters will be haters , just ignore them .. please .
Kevin, I hope the hospital appointments are behind you now. Wouldn't it be nice to have a dry summer next year? A bit of rain at night to keep the greens soft and dry during the day. I don't get haters. You get an odd opinion from time to time, which is fine, we are all odd in some way. I just smile when I get swing advice from a 23 handicapper!
Great short put analysis, FI it's a gimme 😂😂, loved our conversation ref yardage for senior golfers, LPGA tour professionals short game and your view/demo on risk vs reward this year. I think you and Real Golf both are appealing because you both play at courses in the UK which are highly relatable, conditions and weather wise. For a late comer to your channel, only middle of this year, loving it from a golfing seniors perspective. Bang on with your swing analysis by the way, I did exactly the same thing, club head not in front of the hands at takeaway horizontal. Played in a few pro-ams this year found a good teacher and it was the first thing he changed. Proof is in the pudding they say, first comp back as I was standing on the 18th tee at gross -2, I thought wow 👌 I've got it, then double bogey later I thought 💩 lost it already 😂😂 that's golf. Keep up the great work Simon I'd certainly be up there for another charity day if you have one, I'd probably be able to get you a freebie greenfee if you fancy a trip to the south coast. Have a good holiday🏖.
Hello Stuart, out here in Thailand you get so much choice over tees and the old boys play forward and never get grief in the clubhouse after. Why can't we do that at home? I just played a hole where my tee had a 215 yard carry over water and the senior tee was well foward and to the side and no water to get over. We need that sort of consideration at home. Club behind and you're stuck. You can only hit straight right or swing hard left and slice. -2 with 1 to go and then the mind wandered. It happens. This week the caddy started adding up the score after 4 or 5 holes and I made a double bogey straight away. It happens!
Certainly something we need to consider over here, Cams Hall where I play does have different tees the usual white, yellow, red but also others that are nearer but they are just two tee markers to the side of the fairway, doesn't really count. I think a combo of different tees and handicap according to tee might help speed up play as well. I sometimes play off the forward tees, mainly to practice long iron shots and hybrid shots. Have a great time in Thailand I worked in Australia for two years and visited a few times....Great place
@@stuartjames2483 I'm playing a course next week where there are some forced carries over water on par 3's. I'll play them at 165 but others can play that combo you mentioned by going forward and having a different angle. Leave the ego behind.
I have always enjoyed watching and talking with the small ones. I have had so much advice from guys with 600 subs and the big boys wouldn't give you the time of day. Except one. Golf Sidekick is the only guy who will answer all your dumb questions about youtube and equipment and editing. He is the top man in my book. Cheers
I've had the same issues with bowing my wrist early and hitting low nasty hooks that start left this year. Only an issue with the woods. It's the damndest thing, I never had this problem for almost 30 years. Iron game better than ever probably but then the driver gives out. Obviously.
I'm trying to think what might cause the low hook with the driver. My only thought is the right hand under the shaft a bit or maybe a lot. Get through winter then get the Pro to have a quick look. If it's obvious he/she will spot it in under 5 minutes. Could be ball position too. Best get some eyes on you. Best of luck.
My first time out here in Thailand in 2008 I played with some fun guys from Australia. I was of course playing in a cotton shirt and Dave said after the round 'Simon, you look like shit'. 🤣🤣🤣
"What's wrong with your swing?" Does it matter at our age? How much better can you get if you followed all the advice? Ten days ago I had the most horrific round I've ever had - match abandoned after 13 holes (lost 6 and 5) - I had just topped 100 strokes - and I was seriously considering retiring from golf altogether. Yesterday I played to my 19.7 index and went round in net par. So really at our age do we want to simply enjoy our rounds of golf, remember the good shots and forget the rubbish. As to working with video, I really understand the difficulties of combining an activity with recording everything for post activity editing. I've used video many times on my professional career and so I have the experience to understand how hard you're working to offer us these videos. BUT, please carry on if you can I really do enjoy your content. Thinking further on this maybe you need a mate to help with the logistics of playing and recording at the same time. Pity I live in South West France so I cannot help you as a camera holder or bag carrier. Love the response at 23:17 on lining up the last put for a video. Neat commentary. At 26:55 another gem for your channel - "off camera I've ...." - delightful as James Robinson says so many times.
Hello Ian, I know there is still some level par rounds in me. I've got the short game to make up for some small mistakes. I can putt a bit and still make 3 birdies in a round. If I can just fix a couple of kinks then my low round is going to be level par. I refuse to give up on that dream as yet. I know it will get harder and it may not ever happen again but I'm too stubborn to give in to age just yet. Video slows me down but only I know where I want the camera. I had a guy help me once and when I watched the clips back later he had stopped the recording as soon as I hit it. It was quite funny but useless for publication! It was bang, click. It was off before the ball had gone 75 yards. Not much for shot tracer to work with. I was hitting additional tee shots just to work with the shaft and I lost 2 of them. I was really pushed for time to make up mind and at the end of the round still didn't know what to do. Such is golf.
The shot tracer lies a lot. I can get the start position at the ball and the end position where it lands but I can't get the correct curve out of the line. There is more bend than it shows sadly. They do a shot tracer pro version but it's a rental programme. $80 a year. I keep thinking about upgrading because I can cover that cost now, maybe one day. Cheers Oh, and you're right about the left arm in fact some old Pros tell you to do so, just not as much as me.
Hi Scott, I use a watch as well. Can't remember the model number, I just use front, middle and back. I'm not good enough to hit a precise yardage and middle is good enough for me. I bought a mid price £120 laser for the videos mostly. Although for some bizarre reason hole after hole I get yardages of exact 10's. 140 on the 3rd, 150 on the 6th etc etc. How? I'm also old fashioned enough to pace a shot out form the 150 yard markers and ignore the electronics. Cheers
Hi David, yes and no. If I need fixing I go see a Pro rather than watch a Pro. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and the Pro on youtube can't see me. I do watch a couple for entertainment value and I like one or two of the senior advice Pros. Cheers Simon
@@davidwalters313 I have watched Danny Maude but rarely. I used to watch Alex Etches but there is only so much of watching a guy hit into a tv screen you can do. The ones I watch now are Easiest Swing from time to time and Fitzygolfpro all the time.

Thanks Simon, appreciate everything you do 😁👍👍👍
Cheers Kev
Glad you didn't give it up!
Cheers. I think staring out the window at the rain got me down a bit.
Knowing yourself breeds confidence. for sure.
It's -20C with the ground covered with snow here. You have it easy.
I bet you're not looking for golf balls in Snow.
Well move house then. Simples!
Cheers
Another great video I live the channel 👍
Thankyou so much 🤟
Just found your Channel and subbed you and I are a lot alike golf has been my passion for almost 40 years I head out to play on my own all the time when I’m not working there’s nothing more appealing to me than an empty nice golf course to work on my game in fact I have a small channel my self that I film from my phone video shorts of my shot making when i play mostly for my own review of my technique and ill tell you after I upload some new video shorts its entertaining to see the number of views all though there’s not many so cheers and thanks for your efforts making vids and posting.
Hello Mike, thankyou very much. I don't watch the big boys on youtube, I stick with the small ones. I have learnt so much about equipment and editing etc from small channels. I promise I will come over and have a peek. Simon
Hi Simon,
So glad you haven't thrown in the towel, you content is always so refreshing and relatable...
Best regards
Olly.
Hopefully Thailand will bring some swing clarity and you'll be able to celebrate new found swing feels and less bunker visits 😉
Have the best time, kind regards
Olly.
Hope you're enjoying your holiday!
Thanks
@thehairygolfer brilliant! Have fun mate!
@@robertcourt8593 5 rounds to go. I've got the weekend off now to catch up with some sleep and christmas shopping. No 6:30 alarm call for me tomorrow. Cheers.
@@thehairygolferI'm very envious! Heavy rain and heavy frosts here all week. No golf this weekend by the looks of things
@@robertcourt8593 I have had updates from home about how cold it is and I'm out here melting.
Just discovered your content.. subscribed ❤
Thankyou, that's very kind.
please , please , please keep going , only thing keeping me going .
💯 an increased variety of tees would certainly help though
@@stuartjames2483 Golf is supposed to be fun. Playing too long is not a lot of fun unless you want a one-off challenge.
Love it Simon ,fuck it it’s a gimme 😂😂
Some would say not.........🤣🤣🤣
F it, it's a gimme!🤣🤣🤣🤣
And it was 🤣🤣🤣
I'd rather watch this chap than those big so call golf influencers. "Fuck it that's a gimme" lmfao 😂🙂😂
Enjoy your humour, remind me of Harry Worth. And yoy kinder look like him.😜
My first time out here in Thailand in 2008 I played with some fun guys from Australia.
You hit a pretty straight ball considering you bend your left arm when you’re older I think it’s more difficult to keep that left arm straight.
I’ve got an old Garmin Approach S12 watch which I find is quite accurate. Have you tried using them ?
Hi Scott, I use a watch as well. Can't remember the model number, I just use front, middle and back. I'm not good enough to hit a precise yardage and middle is good enough for me. I bought a mid price £120 laser for the videos mostly. Although for some bizarre reason hole after hole I get yardages of exact 10's. 140 on the 3rd, 150 on the 6th etc etc. How?
I'm also old fashioned enough to pace a shot out form the 150 yard markers and ignore the electronics. Cheers
Good video Simon. Do you ever watch RUclips instruction videos?
Regards David
Hi David, yes and no. If I need fixing I go see a Pro rather than watch a Pro. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and the Pro on youtube can't see me.
I do watch a couple for entertainment value and I like one or two of the senior advice Pros. Cheers Simon
@@thehairygolfermay I ask which ones? Don’t worry if you would prefer not to say - it may not be appropriate from a fellow RUclipsr

It's not important to me really. Until you get a request to drive 250km for a game of golf.
@thehairygolfer True ... such distances, time and money involved should not be carried alone. Better to do a 3 day trip and make it special. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
