CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With the whole town watching, the Rocket Boys have their first successful launch.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
NASA engineer Homer H. Hickam, Jr.'s autobiography provided the basis for this drama about a teenager coming of age at the dawn of the space race. In 1957, Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a high school student in Coalwood, West Virginia when the Soviet Union launches Sputnik, the first man-made satellite. While most of his friends and neighbors react with fear or distrust, Homer is instantly fascinated and begins studying everything he can find on jet and rocket design. While many of Homer's friends are puzzled by his new obsession, several new friends share his enthusiasm, and with the encouragement of his teacher (Laura Dern), Homer and his fellow "Rocket Boys" begin designing and launching their own homemade missiles. However, Homer's father (Chris Cooper) takes a dim view of his son's interest in rockets and is convinced Homer's future should be the same as his own, working in the local coal mines. October Sky mixes the drama of traditional family conflicts with a nostalgic glimpse of life in the mid-50's and a look at the earliest days of our journey into space.

The guy who played the "captain of the football team" never threw a pass in his life before this scene.
hes just trying to act they dont gotta have lived the part beforehand
Lol I never noticed how bad that throw was before
@@rabidwombat1912 bro it’s not hard to throw a spiral he doesn’t have to be a quarterback before hand
@@chrispybuckets2037 go check out quarterback footage from 1957
even NFL quarterbacks threw wonky compared to todays equipment advancements (the ball) and techniques they all have
these were just high school kids
@@studlymuffen4life To be fair, those footballs look authentic 1950s which were about as round as their heads and was more like Rugby in those days.
The fact is older brother does his duty of roasting him but has also been proud and supportive of him has always been so touching😂😭
To get a sense of this movie you really have to understand that part of the country. It's so rural and poor. Literally the poorest part of the country. All they know IS COAL. In this time period there was no internet, social media, none of that.
What this dude did in the environment he was in is nothing short of astonishing
And to have your father actively working against you the whole time. A lot of kids today get all the parental support in the world but still can’t bring themselves to work hard and succeed.
True. Getting a football scholarship in that place would make you one of the heros of the town
@@matt2522 In real life his father was a lot more supportive of it because he kept getting good grades in school and his teachers were very impressed with him and his friends. They got in a lot less trouble than this film portrayed.
What these DUDES did.. there were 6 of them and most if not all of them ended up being successful in a place not known for it.
Dude…those cars are classics. If you’re able to afford those, you’re not poor.
I love how even after the crap he just gave Homer, Jim was cheering on that rocket when it took off. That’s brothers for you. :)
Yeah, thats siblings period lol. I love giving my brothers and sisters crap, but if anyone else does, that ain't happening.
No one cheers louder than me when my siblings succeed, just be ready for me to mention that time you pissed your pants afterwards, lol gotta keep each other humble eh?
Siblings: they hate you, but always support you.
@@KS-xk2soif it's in good fun maybe....but if it's not and it goes to far then yeah. I'm an only child by the way
1:35- the moment Jim was proud to be Homer's brother.
MAnuscript421 always loved that part. Such excitement from him for his brother who he mocked for it in the beginning
You know his pride is legit, you can't fake that kind of scream, you are in AWE.
@@toAdmiller I mean he is an actor but that was a really genuine kinda scream.
Yeah I liked that too. None of them had seen anything more exciting than a football game before. The idea of something greater than their small town was something they could never comprehend. To see it for real was something very exciting. I love this movie.
For real, super underrated scene. Older brothers always give the younger brothers a hard time but at the end of the day, nothing can come between a brothers love.
"To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems."
-Homer Simpson
"Let's go see Homer blow himself up..." lol
"That's real funny, Jim".
10,000 years ago
"Lets go see Grug set himself on fire..."
I always found this scene very touching. They'd had nothing but a string of failures and pretty much all their classmates thought of this as nothing but a big joke that would go no where. I remember first seeing this and thinking "The pressure is on now boys. You may learn more from a failure than a success but you've got a lot riding on this launch. You must deliver some success here and now."
Yup thought the same. really though that's all what success is, a string of failures. Nice Marathon avatar btw :D
Gotta say, Ms Riley and Jim's excitement display a microcosm's happiness and a totality of the numinous events that make our lives as mortals more fullfilling.
Kenni Amm William Blake is that u

Dorkmax uh oh you don’t understand big words. Tough break pal
This scene gives me goosebumps and happiness every single time.
This scene was really really great. And I believe this really encouraging most of the scientist at least myself, hundred of failure and succeed finally.
After reading the book I can confirm that even while the book is better than the movie, Rockets Boys and October Sky are quite close.
Fun fact, October Sky is an anagram for Rocket Boys.
They both have there own place, I just don't like how the movie got so many things wrong. Like Quinton being a ginger, he had jet black hair and didn't look that nerdy. Homer was the one with glasses. How do you mess that up? Homer really put alot more detail in the book that this movie would take 10 years to express.
@@pulsarsbeam6411.. When it was time to release the movie, however, Universal Pictures decided that the movie title "Rocket Boys" was not a good title and would not sell well. (They apparently thought the name "Rocket Boys" would tell people this was a kid's movie.)
As legend has it, director Joe Johnston fed the name "Rocket Boys" into a computer anagram program. The program rearranged the letters in every way possible. One of the combinations generated was "October Sky." This became the name of the movie. It's also an interesting coincidence. Not only do "Rocket Boys" and "October Sky" contain exactly the same letters, Sputnik was launched in October, and we actually see Sputnik streaking across the October Sky in the movie!
This what happens when students have a good group of friends and a supportive teacher
As a teacher, I can tell you Miss Riley's (Laura Dern) reaction is how all teachers feel when their students accomplish something great.
Try to imagine being a teacher...year after year of your students saying things like, "Why do we have to learn this stuff...?" "This is dumb...this is boring..." "My teacher just wants to make my life miserable with homework, tests, etc."...and then, one day, you get to see that rare student that GETS it...that realizes the potential that education enables...the realization that all of your years of teaching frustration have been improved by the amazing success of one of your students who LISTENED to you...who GOT what you were explaining all of those years...this is the scream that you hear from Miss O'Riley at 1:37...
The first film to make me cry. As a kid I loved this movie when it first came out. A classic.
The genuine happiness and sense of pride she had for them boys...now that is precious. THAT is the miracle that took place is WV all them years ago.
sure, just warn her and not everyone else
Anyone notice that Homer's brother Jim looks like Biff Tannen from back to the future
Yeah a little bit
Jim's excited reaction and then his utter amazement after what he just witnessed is one of my favorite parts in this movie.
"I think we got a chance"
I love the progression of using a simple fuss to the string device they have here.
I don’t know who the music composer is for this movie but did such an amazing job. The triumphant track that plays when the rocket launches is beautiful and fits the setting of West Virginia perfectly.
Sometimes I imagine the rocket flying into the mines XD
I remember my first crush being Laura dern beacuse of this movie
Valentine Carmina for me.. She was 1,000 shades of cute.
Who doesn’t love Laura Dern?
My all time favorite film!
Why would you EVER root against or say anything bad to your own brother?!?!?!
I like how they countdown nervously thinking it would blow up again
I’ve watched this movie at least twice a year for as long as I can remember, and just noticed that they all drew their names into the launchpad!
Roy Lee cracks me up
From someone who had done roughly 20 mission trips to this area seen homers house (and the others including Freida Riley) this movie will always be my number 1 favorite movie. I also saw the road to snake route and spent multiple weeks jn war helping out down there. Absolutely stunningly beautiful landscape. Unfortunately war is named correctly. Pretty damn dangerous spot. I used to have to escort women around the town there in case anyone tried anything. But regardless of all that, if I had the chance to go back there right now to help out I’d do it without a second thought.
I always get goosebumps withy this scene
It's crazy to think you can just go to a hobby store or online and buy rockets similar to this that work everytime
Came back to re-watch this movie after he tweeting at a girl who was bragging about her internship at NASA that she should be careful with her language since it might not look good in professional environment like NASA. Apparently, she got all her friends to berate him for being sexists and what not while tagging NASA into the tweet thread. She lost her internship and look like Homer is trying to help her get it back since he wasnt part of the hiring process nor did he get NASA involved.
One of my favorite movies so underrated. I was born in october ao I try to watch it on my birthday.
i love the film score (music) in this movie 😎✌🏻
I had forgotten how gosh darned cute they were.
I love this movie. 🙂
Best movie ever
This is from a different flick but it still applies "Keep moving forward."
HA! Figures the one time people are rooting for him to fail he's manages to makes his first success
and i think it's because of Homer Hickam, and Warner Van braun amateur rocketry got started
Have to imagine they really tested that match-strike mechanism very thoroughly. Not only could it's malfunction be embarrassing in a situation like this, it could actually be dangerous. If the rocket doesn't launch, they wouldn't know if it was because that mechanism malfunctioned or if the rocket is still fizzling and could still explode. I've heard from many sources that explosives (which they were treating the rockets as given how many blew up) which don't go off when they're supposed to are an explosive technician's worst nightmare.
They probably had a slightly better setup... maybe multiple matches, possibly a small booster pouch of black powder at the base of the fuse... or they simply used slow burn fuse and actually just hand lit it... they did live in a mining town after all, all kinds of fuse types and guaranteed ignition sources available, then looks like they eventually used low yield blasting caps or homemade electric matches 🤔 also old school basic kitchen style strike anywhere matches were *much* better quality than the safety first junk wood kitchen matches available today 🙄 (I'm only speculating on all this, I haven't read the book that the movie was based on, which is apparently very detailed, I really need to buy a copy!) 👍
@@berryreading4809 Good point, likely this setup was just what the movie makers depicted that wasn't necessarily realistic to what the kids actually used. Indeed, there'd be no shortage of knowledge on how to set off pyrotechnic devices safely and from a safe distance. Earlier in the movie they used simple manually-lit fuses, at the end they used an electronic igniter similar in concept to modern hobby rocket launch controllers (presumably with some sort of electric match). As those two are the most obvious approaches, and this appears both more complicated and less reliable than either, I could imagine in reality they likely just went straight from manually-lit fuses to electronic. Perhaps the movie makers were wanting to show a "progression" from manual fuses to this to electric, even if this was both historically inaccurate and nonsensical.
I actually did read the book, I believe when I was in 7th grade. I recall that I really liked it, but can't remember much details for things like this, if they even mentioned it at all. From what I recall the book went into more detail overall, but more on the storytelling, what was going through his head, his dating life (which the movie briefly acknowledged but mostly glossed over), in a lot of ways a coming-of-age story. I don't recall it going into much more technical detail than the movie did. The only major technical aspects I recall it mentioning were his debate over whether to melt "rocket candy," which he thought would make effective well-bound fuel, but could be a rather dangerous endeavor, eventually deciding to go for it. The movie depicted them doing so, but didn't go into his thought process on weighing the risks. The other thing I recall it making some technical mention of was an attempted thrust-measuring rig, which malfunctioned and pounded the bathroom scale to pieces. There were a few other differences, the movie over-dramatizing some scenes - particularly the part where the boys were arrested for setting a fire which they eventually concluded was caused by an aerial flare rather than their own rocket. The incident happened in the book, but the boys weren't arrested, I don't think even accused, it was figured out pretty much right away that it wasn't their rocket.
@@quillmaurer6563 thanks for the response 👍 I have to admit half of my response was just to vent my frustration at the terrible handicapping of modern kitchen matches 😄 To be fair although shipping fires caused by matches have been *drastically* reduced... I still miss my quality strike anywhere matches dang it! 🤣👍
@@berryreading4809 I'm fairly young, I've always known matches to not be trivial to light - did they used to be easier? I guess that makes sense, even now I hear warnings about keeping matches away from babies, I have a really hard time imagining a baby managing to strike a match. That warning would make more sense if it's a vestige of a time when they could be lit much easier.
the book is great. i havent seen the movie yet but it looks good!
isnt it funny he says lets go see homer blow himself up but he has BART's haircut lol
Based on the flight time, I'm guessing the altitude was 775 meters or about 2500 feet. Nice.
All the girls in this movie are really tall
Lmao, compared to the ones today!
is that a bad thing or a good thing?
