  • This interview took place in October of 2002.
A young man in a small West Virginia coal town dreams of building rockets to outer space as he witnesses Sputnik flying overhead. A perfect Hollywood opening scene, the story behind the hit film October Sky is all the more remarkable because it is drawn from the real life of former engineer Homer Hickam.
Hickam is interviewed by Ohio University chemical engineering professor Dr. Nicholas Dinos.

Mr. Hickham is an inspiration to all of us who don't come from privileged backgrounds but who have dreams of bigger things. He is so encouraging of others and genuine in who he is. Well done Homer.

I think that's why I loved the movie so much. Great things came from simple, hardworking people.

Homer Hickam was the reason i wanted to be an engineer in the first place. Truly an inspiring person.

October Sky is my favorite movie. I cry every time I watch it. It reminds me of my family up Cabin Creek in Eskdale.

Homer, thank you for all you do for our country. I lived in Caretta and have been to Coalwood many times. My dad worked for Olga Coal Co.

What a great person. His accomplishments are fantastic but also the philosophies he lives by,"keep your families together".....so sad what the world has become.

Now with 3D printers high schoolers are more capable than ever of making a rocket.
Only question would be if the metal filament would have the strength, flexibility, and heat resistance to handle the forces.
