Oh, man, I havent had so much fun in quite a while ! Listening to Homer tell the stories of his early life, my mind was following them up from memories of the movie, which I own and have seen several times (even gave it to my boss to watch back when I was still working) and saw it just last week when I watched it here in RUclips. I cant wait to get "The Rocket Boys" and read it, and also "Dont Blow Yourself Up" (I laugh every time I hear that expression, thinking of his mom telling him that in the movie) ! It was great seeing him here and I'm glad he's doing well . Now, I'm going to watch the movie again on the 'Tube !
I understood from different history resources that it was impossible to see Sputnik from the ground with the naked eye, as it was just 58.0 cm in diameter, unless you had binoculars. I assume they used that or a special lens, right?
Thanks Tod. Actually there are several stories of people who saw Sputnik; however some believe that what they saw may have been the booster. However Sputnik was estimated at magnitude 6, which is near the limit of naked-eye visibility under dark sky conditions. www.cloudynights.com/topic/125805-was-sputnik-visible-naked-eye/ www.space.com/38331-sputnik-satellite-fun-facts.html
