Hugh Panaro is a very popular Phantom, and for good reason. Through the years Hugh was given the freedom to explore and experiment with the character, giving a different and unique performance every night depending on how he felt. Fans loved his portrayal, which he credits to his studying of the Susan Kay "Phantom" novel, and he will go down as a Phantom legend for sure.
And his credits with the show are incredible, he first played Raoul in 1991, returned as the Phantom for a brief stint in 1999, returned from 2003-2005, then was the Phantom again from 2010-2014 with just one brief break in summer 2013. Although it's not confirmed, he likely played the role roughly 2,000 or so times by the end of his run in 2014.
This is a lovely video of his final performance as The Phantom. It includes the farewell speech at the end. Enjoy!
I really don’t care for the debate on who the best Phantom/Christine is, I just think they all have a beautiful, unique quality that they each bring to the table and I love all of them ❤️
I also love all of them, the Phantom reinterpreted in different ways, always a surprise
You can generally tell a good phantom from His "insolent boy" and by god Hugh's is unmatched.
That's what I usually go off of. If there's the right balance of power, anger, and a slight subtlety behind it, that's how you know this guy is going to be good or it'll be a good night

This is funny to me. 😂I usually go by the phantom’s first line in the theme song.
10/10 recommend checking out Anthony Warlow’s version from Australia (original, when he was the youngest phantom ever, in the 1990s - like 1993/4; second, older in the 2007/9 range). That & “Wandering Child” and his “Final Lair” is just haunting. Hugh is fantastic, of course.

The fact that Hugh can hold the notes so much longer then he needs to is just incredible especially in music of the night! It’s like he sings while breathing but doesn’t break to take a breath!! Incredible
This is the first time I've ever cried watching POTO. Hugh's singing "Masquerade" as Christine left was so innocent it truly showed how broken this character truly is. And his "Christine, I love you" was so sweet. He made me see the poor, broken, lonely soul hiding beneath all the violence and manipulation. He broke my heart. No other Phantom has done that.
I'll have to seek out more of his work. I'll buy an industrial size box of Kleenex first lol.
I think I saw an interview before where Hugh Panoro said he read Kay’s phantom and...I can totally see it he’s very reminiscent of Erik in that novel.

Hugh is one of my favorite phantoms because his voice is high and you can see from his acting that he was very attentive to this role

He's the best, for sure. Him and Gary Mauer are my favorites. Gary felt so much more "wounded", but I loved Hugh for his "joker"esque characteristics.

Christine be dirty with that fake kiss to reveal what's under that mask!!!! I love this play on the phantom! He's a person who was bullied and tormented to his looks. So much so he's become insane with love and rage when the one person he thought loved him for him betrays him in his mind. The sounds of "my angel" and "I love you" hurt so much

Not since Crawford have i loved a Phantom as much as Hugh. i absolutely love his mentally deranged, creepy performance. It fits with Kay's Phantom and Hugh becomes one with the character. You can tell he absolutely loves this role. Other actors are great, of course, but they don't really offer much infividuality to their interpretation of Eric. A lot of them are paint-by-numbers with their performances, only offering a distinction with their vocal range and pitch.
Crawford brought an almost ethereal, ghostly presence to his performance. Hugh brings a psychotic dark Joker type humor to the part. Other phantoms, while good, are, in my mind, forgettable. Again, they offer good performances and vocals, but they kinda go through the motions and don't leave a lasting impact. Totally cool if others feel differently. We all have different tastes and preferences. :) These are just mine.
I'm disappointed that i never got to see Hugh live. He's an absolutely amazing actor. There's just something about tenors.
Hugh vc é realmente perfeito em todos os sentidos. Que presença de palco é essa minha gente! Hugh como sempre dando um show tanto na atuação impecável como na voz perfeita. Ele faz parecer que é muito fácil cantar as músicas dessa peça, quando na verdade é extremamente difícil, mas ele com seu alcance vocal fabuloso faz parecer que é tudo tão fácil. Ele em music of the night e no Final lair é divino. O jeito que ele caminha tão seguro de si pelo palco, exatamente como o fantasma deve ser.

Yes he is very creepy. Extremely creepy. Michael Crawford gave me the heebie-jeebies too, at first...then he hit the second A flat. Hugh makes it sound like that’s on the lower end of his range, like it’s casual. In the best way. STYDI is amazing, “ideal” is a hoot, and I haven’t even hit his chandelier giggle yet. Okay, sign me up for a slice of this! ETA: somewhere someone commented on him whispering “I love you” and “I hate you” at the end of the final lair. I think it isn’t “I hate you” but “my angel.” I can’t find the comment. :/
Creepy is correct though. Everyone seems to forget the original character. I think if he creeped you out just a little, then he did his job perfectly! Both Michael and Hugh encapsulated this, so love your comment❤️❤️

I actually find he slurs notes (scooping?) too much lol. Like his diction + pitch is off/sloppy when he starts notes a lot of the time and that just puts me off him a bit. He was better in older bootlegs I think

That dog was loved like crazy on that stage. Lots of pets and hugs. He didn't look stressed at all. He's probably been to many performances. He's a good boy and Hugh clearly loves him a lot.
