      But Scotty, the Volvo engine in the thumbnail doesn't have a "valve cover". That oil is most likely due to a bad oil cap seal or clogged pcv system. Try that on a Volvo and you'll start pulling cam covers. I have said Volvo engine that has had said problem, and if I didn't know any better and started pulling the cam covers because of the thumbnail and this video content I'd be sorely mistaken.

      Scotty Kilmer hey Scotty! Enjoy your videos very much. I have an 03 Ford ranger that is manual and just recently started having issues where shifting is delaying and kinda hard . No noises or anything it's just getting hard to shift . I just changed the transmission fluid and no shavings but it was black. Unsure how long the previous owner had it in there . Any ideas?!!! Please make a video or message me sir :) thank you

    You're my hero, Scotty!! This EXACT scenario happened. I was changing plugs and wires and found oil in a cylinder. I was sad, not knowing if this was a problem I could fix myself. :(
    But, then I checked your channel. You made the gasket change look so easy, I was brave enough to do the work myself on my 99 Celica GT. It was super easy and I know I saved at beaucoup dollars by doing it myself! THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHTS INTO CAR REPAIR! ;*

The day to day driver I have was a beater when i got it, its broken down a couple times but thanks to you i was able to diagnose the problems and fix them myself. I can fix damn near anything if i know what the issue is and I have the materials and tools required but finding out what the issues were for my car have always been a deterrent to do it myself but not with your Savage and savvy style. Just want to give you a big Thanks for your time and efforts to teach so many people including myself, keep rocking man!

    you have to drop the tank, but a jack under it with the car up on tall jack stands, remove the two bolts that hold the straps and remove the fuel lines and the big feed hose from the gas cap area. Then it slides down. Make sure it has little gas in it or you will get a gasoline bath

    This video definitely help me out. You saved me a lot of money. I thought my car was overheating because steam was coming from the engine bay when it popped the hood. And I smelled through the vents. So I thought my car was burning oil but It's actually leaking oil not burning it It only is burning because the hot oil that's leaking is touching the hot engine parts. I even had a mechanic look at it and he told me it was an oil leak for sure. He was being completely honest he told me that the mechanic shop he's at charge a lot of money so. That doesn't happen too often. So I decided to watch your videos and you make everything seem so easy. I guess that's what many years of experience does. But I'm not complaining. Your videos always helped me out. Save me a lot of money.

    I'm cheap and don't like wasting money buying cars. I get to road test the fancy ones free anyway, being famous. I have owned only a 67 Opel, a 72 Maverick, an 81 corolla SR5, and a 94 toyota celica in over 45 years of driving cars. spent less than 6 thousand dollars total for all of them combined. The celica is actually my favorite, and I got it for 250 bucks.

    Yeah yeah it looks pretty easy to watch it done by a pro on a fairly easy car.
    When I was a kid, I was all into mopeds, small bikes etc. Fixing them, taking them apart.
    Then I lost a touch of it.
    Love my pathfinder 02 but it needs a lot of small work like changing a knock sensor, valve cover gasket etc. Seems like a pretty easy job. But whenever I pop up my hood I'm like DAMN how I'm gonna do it... tones of tubes, bolts, wires etc... lol
    .
    The funny part is that I can afford a new car. But I just too damn in love with this one. They don't do cars like this anymore. And the engine with a tranny work like a horse. Nice and strong.
    .
    Mechanics want like 2-4K for this job. Damn car costs 2-4K now ahaha...
    .
    Anyway, great vids, fun to watch.
    But I'm still too pussy to start fixing my car on my own. It's my only car, If I mess up something, I'll be immovable and HELL NO I'm not using a public transportation in NYC. )))

    You're not worried about metal or other particles getting into the engine when you buffer it like that? Couldn't those flakes cause damage over time? I'm gonna do this job within the next couple of months and I know the gasket is just gonna be caked on since it has 308,000 km on it and it looked so easy that way and I'd love to do it like that if it's safe for my engine.

      I hear you and would take that little step too, you could keep the old spark plugs in the holes for that and pick debris up before replacing the plugs.

    • @HN-gj2iq
      @HN-gj2iq 7 лет назад +8

      He kept the plugs in the holes, and left the oil in the hole, and after buffing, pumped oil out and then took plugs out. So that should be ok. But yeah, sticking a rag in would have made the process even better i think.

    • @stephenhavanka7764
      @stephenhavanka7764 6 лет назад +1

    wait, if I initially remove spark plug only to discover oil in the spark plug well, doesn't that mean all that oil already in there dripped down into engine, and would cause hydro-lock if I start the engine?

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  8 лет назад +15

      that tiny amount of oil will not hydrolock a motor, but if you're worried, crank the engine over a couple times with plug out and it will shoot out

      yes. I had this problem on my 2.2 camry. took out #4 spark plug and discovered oil. was literally only enough oil to coat the threads of the spark plug. changed the gaskets and plugs and it instantly brought vigor back to my car. most likely won't be enough oil to do any further damage, but each repair is individual, so.....

    On the prying of the valve cover with a screwdriver:
    I normally advise against doing that because it's very easy to gouge up the top of the cylinder head and cause new oil leaks later.
    I personally give the valve cover a few good whacks with a rubber mallet while lifting/wiggling the cover with my fingers hooked into the oil fill hole.
    Just my two cents ^^

    Hey Scotty,
    Nice Video. I would also recommend that the viewers be careful when using that wire wheel under the valve cover, and the camshaft. You need to make sure none of that stuff you shave off with the wire wheel gets into the moving parts of the engine. That debris can cause damage the internal moving parts like the cam shaft and valves. Oil change is in order as well.

    On older Honda 4 cyl. engines some of the leaky gaskets are under the rocker arm assembly. It's not quite as easy on those because the rocker arm assembly has to be removed to replace the leaky o-rings. After you put it back together, the valves have to be adjusted. Fun.

    Awesome video. I actually just replaced my valve cover gaskets two days ago since they were leaking pretty bad. Also ended up fixing a idling and stalling problem by accident since you have to remove the intake plenum to reach the rear valve cover I figured I would clean the throttle body and found out that the cause of my idling problems was the automatic idle speed motor (or something like that). Pretty excited

    Whenever I have my valve cover off, I am phobic about foreign contaminants entering the engine. If I have to leave it for a while, I'll put a clean towel over it, so sand or whatever won't get into the exposed engine. And then I see Scotty using a wire grinder on that stuff. Wow.

    the Honda accord I had was fun to swap the gaskets in, the O rings under the rocker assembly were bad as well as the ones for the spark plug tubes on the valve cover, I was paranoid i was going to mess something up on the rocker assembly but it comes out pretty easy and all the seals and O rings come in the set which is pretty cheap.

    thanks Scotty, I have a bad leak on my 04 CLK55 AMG Benz, so I'm going to start with my valve cover gasket and change the plugs while I'm at it. I'm green with this but learning and to save $800 for the gasket change and $500 for the spark plugs is a big motivator. I changed the serpentine belt last week. Thanks again

    gasket scraper actually can cause more damage to the soft aluminum on the head. Rubber pieces flying off the fine wire wheel do no harm, they will just burn off or get squashed.

    This video is for me :D
    I have a leak on my newish car and it's a heart break, but I planned on getting no leak oil leak treatment.
    I don't know where the leak is but when I went for an oil change they saw a lot of oil underneath the car. Not sure if it was a big leak or a small one.
    Can't afford to fix it, so hopefully that no leak treatment works. Too scared to do what Scotty did out here, not even sure if it's the same problem.

    That makes good sense. Probably the infrequent changes is so that they can offer free oil changes for a period of time after the new vehicle is purchased and they wan't to stretch out those free changes as much as possible. I will be changing every 5000km.

    I believe synthetic can help preserve seals, but it will not fix them if they're already getting old. In fact, It often makes the leak worse if there already is one. I just bought a 2002 Grand Prix with 109,000, and it had a leaky right valve cover. I switched it to synthetic, and the leak got continuously worse over the next month to the point where it'd smoke. My cousin who's a technician says that the detergents in synthetic cleaned out any junk that was blocking cracks in the gasket.

    found out the hard way that this isnt so simple with a trailblazer. ended up removing the air box, PCM, throttle body, alternator, intake manifold, ignition coils, some brackets, and undoing some wire, clips and hoses. certain bolts were difficult to get to in tight spaces with so much in the way. im no mechanic but figured i could do fhis myself and i did but it was a pain.

  • @scottykilmer

    One, probably drive slower. but make sure the air filter is clean, and have the MAF sensor cleaned out, that often makes em use a lot more gas

  • @jsmcguireIII
    @jsmcguireIII 5 лет назад

    I highly recommend you stuff rags in the spark plug holes BEFORE scraping or brushing crud off - that keeps crud out places you do not want to dump crud. Its also easy to simply stuff a rag down inside to sop up any excess oil - no need for a pump. Be sure to inspect cam plug inserts and apply gasket goop at corners. easy job anyone can do.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад

    you can see if they are plated just looking at them. Most new spark plugs are all that way, but if you are confused, ask where you buy them.

    often a bad maf sensor will give crap mileage. Try cleaning it by typing "maf sensor" in the search on my scottykilmer channel main page and watch that video, that often helps. and of course see if the transmission is shifting correctly, as they often go out on that model and being in lower gears knocks mileage out.

    well, a blank space may be sufficient for that. Often they do nothing, other than make up stuff to try to sell servicing to you. Just had a guy come in last week with a 1200 repair quote from such an "inspection" at a dealer, and in reality he really needed no work done at all. You can easily check what's needed yourself by checking belts and hoses for cracks, checking all the fluid, and pulling a couple wheels off front and back to check brake pads.

    do a compression test of each cylinder by removing the spark plugs and testing the pressure inside. Worn rings would show low pressure

    I learned something new about spark plugs. I was worried that the Bandit 600S I sold should have had anti-seize on the Iridium spark plugs I put in it, since they are made to last as long as possible. Now I know it's nothing to worry about.

    If oil is only on the firing end, the engine is then leaking oil internally, such as bad piston rings or valve seals. If the whole plug is wet, either a tube is cracked or the seals aren't sealing correctly from incorrect manufacture or installation.

    Thanks for your answer. I'm going to do that compression test. If I have to rebuild the engine, then I will have to do it. The cost is somewhere at 300 $ for the parts and another 100$ for the mechanic. I hope after that it will last.

  • @scottykilmer

    that's not grinding, that's a fine metal buffing wheel, only pieces of rubber will come off and they easily burn up or get crushed when the engine starts, though you can blow most away with air before putting it back together.

    it's a cheaper oil, so check with the ratings on the bottle and make sure they match the ratings your car has to use. All that info has to be told to you if you call a dealer, it's federal law, those oil ratings

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 лет назад

    realize the warranty on the engine runs out Long before the engine would start to have problems changing oil that infrequently. they really don't want the engines to last hundreds of thousands of miles, they are in the car selling business after all.

    i'm going to try cleaning the MAF sensor when she comes home from work tonight. The trans fluid is nice and red, and it shifts nicely considering the mileage on it. She just bought the car less than a year ago. It gets great mileage on the highway, but it's awful in the city.

    Na, you don't need new screws. And I clean the area off with compressed air, but rubber pieces aren't going to hurt anything, they would be crushed or the filter would stop them. Any really big pieces you take out by hand.
