  • Are you confused about when to use "I have had" and "I had had"? In this video, I'll explain the differences between the present perfect tense and the past perfect tense, making it easy for you to understand and use these two phrases correctly.

    I had had an accident when my dad got home and took me to the hospital. I was four years old. I burned my hand on a hot iron. The pain was too terrible.

      That's more natural way of saying it because the one you have written sounds like you don't follow his content anymore

      Hi. I don't think so. I used present perfect tense, not past simple.
      And I could have used present perfect continous as well. However, my sentence is correct.😀😀

      It does not sound like she does not follow it anymore. However, using present perfect continuous would make it a tiny bit more clear that it is still continuing now.

    I am finally not confused with this topic. This explanation made it much more easy to understand. That was such difficult to understand in school. PS Is 'in' school correct here or should it be 'at'?

    Thank you for this video. It's helpful. Can I also know what tenses to use when there is 'just now' in a sentence. For example: Do we say , I eat a cake just now or I ate a cake just now.

      In this one, I would probably just use past tense because you are focusing on the fact that you had it at that time, not that you had had it earlier.

      This one would probably also be past tense.
      I didn't have enough time to eat my breakfast. I only had time to eat my coffee and rush out the door to try and catch the last bus.

      You could use present perfect or past simple depending when it is right now.
      Basically, past perfect shows that one thing happened before another thing and probably affected it in some way.

      I think no. We use "yesterday and last week" in past simple.

      Very good! But in both of your examples, you should not have "a" before "good grades".

      All of them are correct, but I don't see a r as on to use past perfect in the third one. I would just use past simple unless you are comparing it to another past time/past action.

    I have (possession)
    I had (possession of the past)
    I have had (had/third form)
    I had had (had/third form)
    Something that I use to have in past but not right now (had had)
    Something that I had in the past and still I possess it (have had)
    Had can be replaced with third form of verb
    They had had their breakfast
    They had taken their breakfast
    They have had their lunch
    They have eaten their lunch.

      "I'd" can mean "I had" or "I would", but not "I should".

      I think the reason I wouldn't use "had had" in that example is because you still had that bird at that point.
      I would probably just say "I had a bird".
