    In this video I do a driving reaction on the 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge! I discuss all kinds of topics, and include a few demonstrations of the driving assistance system. My driving reaction videos are intended to be a way for you to get a detailed idea of what is like to drive the vehicle, sprinkled with my various opinions.

      Thanks, I appreciate it! I'm having a hard time getting into a Mach E, but I should have an ID.4 and the Ioniq 5 lined up

    Thanks Dustin for the video and positive review of the beautiful Volvo XC40 P8 AWD Recharge (Wow, that's a mouthful!). But, I must admit I'm a bit biased towards this car as I bought one and it should be arriving any day now. The car does tick a lot of boxes in a good way and I'm really looking forward to receiving it soon. By the way, I am in complete agreement with your comments concerning range. Many reviewers have said that Volvo should have put more emphasis on autonomy than lots of power but it really boils down to how many kilometers on average you drive per day. Now, if I was a traveling salesman averaging 75+ km per day then I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Telsa. But, I am not and I don't drive much per day so the Volvo XC40 is going to suit me just fine! Keep up the good work on your videos!!

    I have one of these cars, as far as pilot assist goes, it doesn't lose it because the turn is big. It loses it when the lane markings go away, and many of those big turns (like the one on your video at 26:24) have roads merging in, and in those spots the lane markings go away since there's a road there. So you have to keep an eye out for when your lane markings vanish. Even then, it's only really an issue when that happens on a turn because it will feel like the car lurches to the side, but on straight roads it just keeps going straight when it temporarily loses pilot assist. It's definitely something you have to keep attention on, but it's much more relaxed driving than without it.

    Hey it's nice to hear from you again! I see your video about the actual vehicle I want to get possibly next year ha ha..I just have a few questions..
    When driving a gas powered car, the mpg gets a little better when put on cruise control. Does the same thing happen in electric cars? Does the range last a bit longer when put on cruise control? Also when you use the one peddle system, does that help as well in extending the range? I'm not scared of the range in this particular vehicle, but I'm also new to the electric vehicle market. I don't want to buy a hybrid which now seems like a waste of money given the range of electric vehicles that are getting more diverse.
    Thanks for your video and have a good day

    • @DustinBatchelor
      @DustinBatchelor  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the great questions! Cruise control can help with range as it's very easy to speed in an EV and not even know you are doing it (such as climbing a big hill). An EV also uses regenerative braking to slow the car down when in cruise control, so it works very well. With that said, you can get more range out of the EV with careful driving techniques such as picking up speed on downhill and slowing down on hill climbs.
      One pedal driving is great when you are coming to a stop or in slower traffic such as in a city. If you're on a more free rolling road, the general agreement is that it's more efficient just to let the car roll with its momentum and to try to keep that momentum going. If I'm cruising on the highway I'll have one pedal driving turned off.
      Good luck with the car search! The XC40 is an amazing vehicle. I'm hoping to get into the Ford Mach E in a few weeks.

      @@DustinBatchelor yeah I'm curious about that at one as well. You said it has a bigger battery but yet I heard on the news where someone almost lost it when going on a road trip. I'm wondering if they had have a bigger range but also to compare it with this.
      With Regen and going down hill, it can help with the range like if i was going on a road trip that was longer than the actual range it is given. I know I would have to go to a charge station, but it would be good to know the at Regen and other technology can help out during a road trip if they're wasn't a charge station near by right away like if I had to drive another 10 miles or so..
      Can't wait to see your next video.

    Gréât comments, when in regen mode. do both motors regen? When on slippery ( icy ) roads regen, is it safe to continue on regenerating mode?

    • @DustinBatchelor
      @DustinBatchelor  2 года назад

      Good question! I don't actually know the answer, but I do know that RWD EVs typically have softer regeneration because heavy braking in the rear wheels (compared to the front) can cause very bad driving dynamics. If I had to take a guess I would think this case uses the front motor to regenerate.
      In regards to driving on slippery situations, the internet seems to be divided. I'm in the camp that I feel good controlled regeneration makes it easier to drive in the snow/ice, but others swear is better to turn regeneration off.

      Volvo recommend turning off One Pedal Drive in slippery/icy conditions - so regen is off

    Use Google voice control - or the voice button on the steering wheel :- "Hey Google ... turn on one pedal drive" ..... no need to fumble around the screens

    Ok Google, turn on one pedal drive. ??

    • @DustinBatchelor
      @DustinBatchelor  2 года назад +1

      I'll admit I didn't think of trying that, but if it did work, it would still be delayed enough that it would annoy me. When driving most EVs that have the option to change regenerative braking mode on the fly, I am constantly going in between those modes depending on the driving situation in front of me.

      @@DustinBatchelor I guess I wouldn't mind. I'll probably just set it to one-pedal and leave it.
      Took it for a test drive recently right after testing a polestar. Like the Volvo much better.

      @@10pm63 interesting! I was supposed to get time in a Polestar but then they changed their mind about letting me in one. Which one did you drive (AWD vs FWD), and what didn't you like about it?

    • @10pm63
      @10pm63 2 года назад +1

      @@DustinBatchelor The Polestar was the single motor version. It's got plenty of power.
      But I/we (the whole family) somehow felt like the space was too tight. The kids wasn't thrilled in the back, my wife complained about her knees being up high - and they did look wierdly high. Asked if she couldn't just stretch them to the front, which she could, but didn't feel like - shes about 186 cm just like me.
      I myself felt like the space was tight/cocooned with the high center console. When I stepped out of the vehicle, my food slipped on floor when setting off. Realized the floor isn't even in the front. It tilts forward making it harder to set off. I know you should ideally turn on the seat and step out... But I never do.
      We did by "accident" sit in the Volvo shortly before trying the polestar. And everyone liked it. So maybe we just fell so much for the Volvo that we didn't give the polestar a fair chance 😉
      Anyway - we went back and took the Volvo for a test drive. Feels more roomy and comfortable. Strongly considering the P6 with single motor. Can't justify the ekstra money for AWD and insane power 🤔

      @@10pm63 thanks for those details. The interior of the Volvo was definitely very comfy and roomy. The AWD is a monster, and not sure most people need that kind of power! Anyways when you decide on one and own it for a bit I'd love to hear what you think.

    Compliments 360 camera, then puts on reverse and rubbernecks out the rear window. Instead of this learning-curve-kind-of stuff maybe learning to operate a vehicle and then reviewing it for the viewers would serve the purpose better. Anyway, thanks for the video.
