    I'm a current Subaru owner, and I've been waiting anxiously for more information on the new Solterra EV, so thank you for your video. Although both the Toyota and Subaru EVs are very similar, I love the detail styling of the Subaru, plus the all-wheel drive that is standard. I'm not a fan of purchasing a brand new 1st year model of any car company, preferring to wait at least a year to see if there are any bugs that need to be worked out. Having said that, my goal is to trade in my 2017 Subaru Legacy for a Solterra EV around the end of 2023 or so. I can't wait for your test drive video!

      We agree !
      We currently own an Outback and are waiting for Subaru to get the bugs worked out of the Solterra.
      I’m retired so I don’t drive much. My wife uses her Outback as her commuter car and our road car.
      I’ll sell my Rav 4WD Limited so we can buy the Soltera.
      My wife’s employer allows staff to charge their EVs for free, so the Soltera will become my wife’s commuter car and I’ll drive the Outback.
      We’re hoping that Subaru will produce the Soltera with Ivory, Napa brown leather interior colors, as we refuse to buy another vehicle with depressing grey or death black 1990 interior colors. 🤮

    I find it interesting that both vehicles claim the same range. If you look at the fronts of the two vehicles it seems pretty clear that the BZ4X has a lower wind load because it does not suffer from the front end dimple which you find quite broadly around the Subaru logo. Further, the BZ4x lacks fog lights which you failed to mention and I expect these too add a bit of wind load. Do these shape differences get reflected in measurable range difference? I'd guess it could be worth a kilometer or maybe more. Did you actually mention any real difference between the vehicles? I have forgotten. The Solterra is to offer a solar panel roof, but is that going to also be available on the BZ4X? Oh yes, you mentioned the two wheel drive version of the BZ4 for which no corresponding Solterra exists. I really wonder about the value of the solar panel roof said to potentially collect enough energy in a year to allow you to go from Berlin to Barcelona: what about increased theft risk and paint aging caused by always parking outdoors? And what if you live as I do in a city noted for its fog? Incidentally, I have lived in this town for about 37 years, and had a car with fog lights for 15 of those years, and I have not found particular value in those lights. They were Subaru fog lights. The big panels you see around the wheels, the bumpers and the lower sides of the two vehicles differ in the materials used: the Solterra has tough plastic which is evidently designed to shrug off scratching if you get rubbed by some scrub trees on a narrow back road, whereas the BZ4X has metal which some observers has said is potentially better looking. I don't think you mentioned this difference. I fear there are other differences not noted.

    I've always been a Hyundai owner, then a friend recommended the Subaru Forester, and I bought one. I love it. Both brands are really really good. That being the case I was looking forward to getting an EV and the Solterra as one of them. But that design totally turns me off. What's with that black cladding? I figure Subaru would bring out an great EV but in turn comes out with this limited range, too long to charge, Subaru in name only vehicle. Seriously, close to one hour on fast charging,? Granted, the price is not bad, but I'll rather spend extra and get something better. Looks like I'm going back to Hyundai with their Ioniq 5.

  • @z1az285

    I would absolutely consider both, however let's talk about bumper to bumper warranties for both cars. The massive infotainment system/ battery cooling system won't be cheap to fix. Also, let's especially talk about Toyota's and Subaru's claim of battery capacity retention of 90% over 10 years, including fast charging?? Ok, let's see the fine print. Also both cars are upwards of 4200 lbs (4400 lbs for AWD) so unless regenerative braking is used optimally, the pads and rotors will get worn out in no time. But no cat converters, alternator or ICE engines.
    In all honesty the HP and range is more than adequate for me.

    I was planning to go 100% all in for the Subaru Solterra. The electric range is holding me back from buying it. All the other features on the Solterra had me sold until I found out what the mileage range. I’ve owned 5 Subaru’s and the Solterra may not be the 6th Subaru unless they offer a longer electric range like 275 to 300 miles. NOT 220. That’s not going to cut it !!!!

    • @jackbauer4prez
      @jackbauer4prez 2 года назад +2

      You expressed my viewpoint, also. After all this time in development, the best range they can do is 250 FWD for Toyota and 220 for their AWD versions. They're almost obsolete before they hit the market. Very disappointing to see as I have been very anxious to replace my Bolt with one of them.

      Jack , I might still consider the Solterra despite the electric range of 220 miles. This will be my first electric vehicle. I’ve owned 5 Subaru’s and been very satisfied with the reliability. I do travel back and forth between Baltimore and New York every 6-8 weeks. I’ve been doing a lot of research and the New Jersey turnpike is building more EV charging stations in addition to the Tesla Charging stations already in place. I’m also communicating with the salesman at the Subaru dealership In Baltimore. From what I’ve heard, these figures may change. Subaru is known to under estimate their specifications. In the meantime, I currently own a 2019 Ascent touring model and the 2020 Legacy Sport. I’m keeping the Ascent and giving the Legacy to my brother in law. You currently own a Chevy electric vehicle. How reliable is it? There is an outside chance, I might consider the Chevy, Ford, Nissan or the Hyundai electric vehicles since they’re offering more range. I’m seriously considering them !

This would be my 6th Subaru I’ve owned. If I do consider the Solterra, I will be driving it locally until more fast charging stations are built on the New Jersey turnpike. As of now they have mostly Tesla fast charging stations on some of the turnpike stops and one EVgo fast charging station on the northbound turnpike stop. The Tesla CEO is already planning to open up the Tesla supercharging stations to non Tesla vehicles. Once that’s in place , I will be able to drive the Solterra EV between New York and Baltimore

    • @seikocitizenwatches
      @seikocitizenwatches 2 года назад

      Agree, 220 miles is a joke unless it’s a plug in hybrid. Subaru will be forced to offer increased range beyond 300 miles on a single charge when the manufacturers see their vehicles sit in dealer lots for months unwanted. For the time being, I am sticking to my 2005 Toyota Sienna with 450 range ICE engine that is still running flawlessly at 313K miles. The Sienna has tons of room for 8 people and cargo is large enough for all camping equipment and luggages something that none of the the current EVs can match.

    I am interested in the Solterra AWD. Availabiility, and range being the primary concerns. If I can’t actually buy one in 2022, what’s the point of looking at them. I’ve been waiting 7 months already for a new car, and repairing my older cars in the meantime. I could make the range of 220 miles work, but it wouldn’t be a trip car, more of a around the town car. I need the AWD for my 25% grade driveway. It’s time to give up on gas powered cars, especially here in CA with gas over $6/gal.

    1) those excessive black cladding, (looks like a clown's car)
    2) 360 km or 220 mile only range & slowish charge, which is a deal breaker.

    I have 2021 Rav4 Prime SE PHEV (got in March 2021 with C$13000 rebate in QC, C$42k tax in ) , excellent for local/city driving 70-80 km summer range, and 50-60 km Montreal winter range.

      @@ryanney4762 Actually the prices will likely be heading down. Lithium Sulphide batteries have an energy-density that is almost 8x better than current generation lithium batteries. Plus they are expected to be cheaper and to recharge in less than 5 minutes. And that's only the INTERIM technology we can see coming in the next few years. Beyond that we may entirely dispense with lithium - a metal whose value is ACTUALLY skyrocketing and will continue to do so while demand grows. So I'm afraid you have the situation upside down. Eventually EV's will be substantially cheaper than equivalent ICE cars... maybe ten years away, but it's coming like an express train.

I can see a paddle (on the visible side of the wheel) in Solterra photos but do not see that in BZ4X photos. So I think Mr Gerich is correct. What that suggests to me is that the regenerative action of turning the motors into generators must be at a fixed setting in the BZ4X in respect only to the human initiated braking function.. If that setting is no regenerative action other than in cruise control then I would think that would give the Solterra a bit of an advantage in range. Using regenerative breaking in cruise control is no doubt very advantageous to both vehicles. The Solterra has a bit of disadvantage in range if you look at the less aerodynamic nose which has a big dimple and fog lights that would give a bit more wind load than you get on the BZ4X. Sure, range and charging is worse than a base model Bolt (which is already getting discontinued for the new gens), the price is double, the tech is already almost outdated,,, but the real deal breaker is all that cloth on the inside, arm rests, dash, etc, especially if you get the "premium" with cloth seats. How the hell are you supposed to keep any of that clean? No glove box? And what's up with the 2' away cluster sticking up so high. Makes my mid trim Bolt EUV seem like a luxury car on the interior, with leather heated/ac seats, no cloth anywhere, etc etc. Price is too high for the small battery and old school charging. Only thing it has going for it are it's a Toyota, the high clearance, and the killer awd. And with all the techy aerodynamics, you'd think the range would be better. Idk, Toyota.

    Bottom line - all these EV choices still cost more than double what they need to be at, price-wise, for most people to be able to afford them. Mass production will eventually help get that figure down, though for now, EVs remain a thing for people with a lot more disposable income than the average person.
    As for these two offerings - I think they're fantastic. Toyota is a very smart, very patient company. Instead of jumping on the EV bandwagon, they took their time and continued to refine battery management technology and EV platforms until they felt they had something that was reliable enough to actually wear their brand. Guarantying 90% power at 10 years for the pack is **incredibly** confident; even Tesla doesn't have that (theirs is 70% at 8 years!).
    I think in 10 years time, we'll likely see EVs making up the bulk of the offerings, hit that affordable point, and companies like Toyota will be setting the bar for battery pack reliability/expectations. Certainly interesting times!

      @@carhelpcorner Yeah, I think you're right - I've never seen a battery life promise that solid. In my opinion, this sorta fires a shot across the bow of the others to up their game with batteries, and may be the start of what pivots EVs to mainstream over the next decade.

      @@Dakiraun It's not just the battery tech. The electronics is fairly complex and software updates need to be done properly otherwise infotainment and telematics units can fail and replacement costs will be exorbitant. Of course there are no ICE components, but only time will tell how robust the cars will be over time. I don't doubt Toyota or Subaru abilities and I hope they succeed but I for one would definitely consider a extended warranty for the battery/ associated components if nothing else

      How about preservation of range under adverse condition and aging? Doubtful. Mach E has terrible ground clearance though I'd imagine that helps it get better range. I could not get that thing out of my driveway without scrapping, let alone take it into woods roads.

    I am not commenting on which is the better choice, but which is the better company. I have reached out to Toyota and asking them to stop using ads which encourage people to tear up our earth and spew millions of tons of dirt into our air in order to sell a vehicle. To their credit, they answered, but I did not agree that they are a responsible company. To prove I was correct in my assessment of them, they came out with their most current ads featuring their pickups tearing apart more of our precious earth. Until they finally understand what they are doing, and stop doing it, I will not buy a Toyota.
