In the 1980's, Porsche solved the steering wheel adjustment issue with the top of it obscuring the gauge cluster of the 928 by simply integrating the gauge binnacle unit WITH the top shroud of the steering column - as you adjusted the steering wheel position to suit your seating preference, the gauges moved with it & remained perfectly positioned & visible through the spokes & rim of the steering wheel.
@Paul S Yet it looks horrific and is perceived as cheap. They do do it for that reason though, cheaper to make (most importantly for them) and cheaper to replace.
@Paul S Good point. Although "cheaper" comes with "cheap" and seriously? This just looks like a piece of crap. Unacceptable from Subaru IMO. But let's not worry a lot about it, people will buy it in large amounts. After all, it's electric, right? So it's gonna save the planet 👍
In ten years that black cladding will be light grey like every Honda Element or Chevy Avalanche out there. But who cares, by that time it will need a new battery that costs more than the vehicle is worth.
Run away from 2023 Subaru Solterra! I’m experiencing serious issues with 2023 Subaru Solterra electric vehicle. This EV is performing poorly and charging slowly. Cold weather causes about 50% 2023 Subaru Solterra reduction in range. Driving 2023 Subaru Solterra on snow can be dangerous. This vehicle is designed for the Japanese market. 2023 Subaru Solterra is not equipped to handle Michigan winter driving conditions. I was treated unfairly and dishonestly by LaFontaine Subaru dealer.
@@0w3nn Toyota made it to be bad intentionally because they don't want to make EVs, but they had to make one for regulations or whatever, so they made it below their standards on purpose.
The Positive: My Pacifica Plug In looks like a regular Minivan. Negative: My Pacifica Plug In looks like a regular Minivan. Also positive, I don't give a crap what people think about my choice in transportation.
@Eman Tabrizi : Thanks a million for just putting simple words on what I feel every single time I (hurtingly) lay my eyes on an EV... They all look like they were actually made to be flying saucers.. but at the end of the day, they ended up with four wheels and labeled as "cars". Exception would be cited for Tesla (Model S), but it's a Jaguar platform anyway, so it's self-explained...
This is the first EV Doug has reviewed that I thought I would like and ended up not liking. I tend to like Subaru, but the range and slow charging seems like a deal breaker for an "adventure" vehicle.
Some things that seem minor at first glance would get really annoying as an owner too. I hate volume buttons rather than a knob. The missing glove box is another weird one. I also thought I would like this, but the video shows it's not for me.
I could honestly live with 220miles in a daily driver, I think the largest issue would be attempting to use this as a member of it's target demographic. While chargers are being installed in state parks around here they often aren't near the interesting trails or sights you'd want to see. Sometimes they aren't near the campgrounds either. So with only 220 miles of range, once you factor in carrying you, your friends/family and your gear... Potentially using roof mounted cargo solutions for gear/bikes/kayaks wich would further reduce range and any inevitable rough road driving cutting into that range it starts to become a huge con. It's a shame because I generally like Subarus, my wife's Forester was a perfect weeklong camping trip vehicle for us when she had it, had great milage and enough capability that some of the less maintained "roads" deeper in the mountains where not a problem. So hopefully they take this criticism and improve on the design because I want to like it.
Exactly. Especially going into the woods, how tf do you find a ev charger?! With that kind of range, I won’t even able to get off that trail and find a charger. For EV off-roading, the car at least have 350+ miles range then we can start talking. For regular gas-powered car, we can just bring couple gas jars and it will be good. For EV, you can’t bring a charging station with you
People that like electric cars are heavily status-conscious. Not only do they need everyone to know they're driving an EV, they need to be reminded of it every time they get in. It's just like when hybrids started getting big. Fewer people bought the hybrids that looked like regular cars-they wanted the Prius with the distinctive "hybrid look".
agreed... sure, its fun. but that fun goes away after a few months (previous Tesla owner here). I would MUCHHHHHHHH rather have more range (a reason why I got rid of the Tesla)
I'm a huge Tesla fan and I completely agree. It would be nice to see an economical, slow EV at a lower price point. Something like the Nissan leaf but with liquid cooled batteries and better charging time.
Nobody cares about the power - we want practicality and for cheaper than gas. This car is a turd. Cheap interior, no glove box, subpar range, and slower charging than competitors when you need it most. This car is a turd. I'm not stopping nearly 3 times resulting in 3 hours of wait time on just a measly 500 mile roundtrip. What a turd.
We all know about Doug’s strange infatuation with a good wiper/signal stalk. The fact that he can easily identify which company produces them just takes the term “car nerd” to another dimension. Impressive.
@@VacFink Not only that but Doug works better as a RUclipsr. If he goes on a streaming platform, he'll be like anyone else and can be easily controlled by the company.
The DC Fast charging limit of 100 kWh just seems like a show stopper to me, and would put this below either the ID4 or the RAV4 Prime in terms of practicality. No road trips in this one. So, its a city car that's primed for adventure? No way.
"If you press that (the Hold A/C button) you gonna get the Air Conditioning system to turn on before you get inside the car, which is nice to feel in a hot climate, you gonna get the A/C to cool down your interior before you climb inside... *Kinda Cool* " Yes, Doug, I really hope so lol
The range and charging are the two factors keeping me from buying the Solterra as my next car. I feel that they're going to eventually offer an extended range version, so I'll wait for that.
I suggest you look at the charging curve rather than the peak speed, if it doesn't work for you I'm sure you'll find another that does, also from what I heard the lexus version should have more range with more power
I was a Subaru service writer for 5 years, I literally quit because of the customers either not knowing anything about the car (thank you subaru sales guys for us having to re-educate after a 100 miles of people owning their cars because you don't talk about anything that has to do with the car), or because people refused to adapt to new tech and it was so frustrating. If you've ever been a subaru service advisor for any amount of time you know exactly what I'm talking about. Subaru owners are just a unique type of people, special people. Watching this and seeing all the new stuff, man my thoughts and prayers go out to all those future Subaru service writers. Glad I got out when I did.
I wouldn’t sweat it. Your typical subaru buyer is gonna take one look at this thing and go, “oh hell no.” They didn’t even include a shifter ffs. First thing you do on a test drive and you already hate it. Brilliant. They’ll sell these, but it won’t be to existing customers.
3:15 That looks similar to what Peugeot did on his models. Doug reviewed the 3008 crossover, and that car has the exact same type of gauge cluster, and the same problems for tall people. Peugeot sort of resolved this problem by making the steering wheel smaller and with a flat bottom. In Europe the I-cockpit (as Peugeot names it) is rather controversial. Love it or hate it.
personally i love it and have had no issues with it (im by no means tall tho - 179cm, but friends who are 185 and have driven it also havent had issues) You just need to play with it a bit more to get it to a comfortable level combined with your seating position
I own a Peugeot e208 with the i-cockpit and I love it (I'm also 5'11", 179 cm) since the wheel is small and flat at the bottom and it suits the size of the car (a small hatchback). What Toyota/Subaru seem to have done here feels like a poor implementation of that idea, especially since the cluster screen itself also looks pretty poor. Maybe Subaru drivers are different, but my personal feel when I saw the POV shot of the wheel and dash here was that it doesn't feel like a nice place to be, and that's from someone who owns and loves a vehicle with the i-cockpit!
Unlike many rivals (especially Toyota) Subaru hasn't hit the government EV limit which means that the Solterra is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit... further making this an appealing and affordable option.
Doug you should create a new doug score metric exclusively for fully electric cars, that includes a "range" score, in order to compare electric cars in a more comprehensive way.
Totally agree. This has been mentioned a lot of times already. Mixing up ICE and EV... is quite a questionable thing. Doug, please hear us out! Thank you.
Not very practical. Range is something that is going to get better over the years in the car industry. So a "10" today could be a "5" in some years, and going back to change the score on every electric car doesn't sound very practical.
220mi range is a dealbreaker, because that means it’ll have a real world range of under 200mi. If it had faster charging than competitors, maybe justifiable…but with significantly slower charging, it’s basically a grocery getter
Just gonna put this out there. That whole closing door idea for the wireless phone charger is interesting but kind of a bad idea. Your phone gets really hot while wireless charging and leaving it in an enclosed space seems like a bad idea. Especially if the sun can get in and cook it.
And the exterior clearly looks the same. People love to make fun of rebadged cars but I didn’t see people hating on the BRZ and the 86 because they are literally rebadged sports cars, but I saw a lot of stupid jdm fans making fun of the MK5 Supra for being a rebadged BMW Z4. Yes they do use the same engine and transmission and everything else, but they look very different. The Supra is a coupe, and the Z4 is a convertible. The Subaru and the Toyota are clearly rebadged cars
They’ve been developed on the same platform and are basically the same car. Nothing secret about this, except Subaru tries to pretend it isn’t. At least if you put an ID.4, Enyaq, and Q4 next to each other they don’t look utterly rebadged. Yet again, these are the same vehicles underneath.
@@caspalaflare8838 This thing is more Toyota than Subaru, inside and out. It is Subaru that should’ve taken more time/effort to differentiate themselves from the bZ4X.
Pricing is out in Norway and it starts at $55k for the base trim. It does have a few bells and whistles though as the buyers are picky, for instance the screen is the 12.3". So I’d expect it to be a tiny bit cheaper. The good thing is you can get tax credit in the US, but I’m not sure how well that plays out with regards to sales tax.
Price is out also for japanese market. The cheapest version which is actual FWD is 5940000JPY thats around 47K usd. The AWD is at 50K USD after conversion.
I love Subaru. I am an Outback owner and the car is perfect for my outdoor/adventure/dog lifestyle. But, I feel like this EV just seems too much like Toyota was behind of it. Now I get that a good chunk of Subie is owned by the T-Man, but I feel if Subie really wants to cater this vehicle towards the adventure junky who wants an EV, going in the direction of how the Outback/Forester or even Crosstrek would have been the move. This just seems more like a Subieified electric Rav4 imo.
I had an impreza coupe, a legacy wagon, and a forester xt. Subaru lost its way in 2008. This car is a turd and very much on brand for new subaru. Any electric car with no frunk was clearly designed poorly and rushed to get past crash testing safety.
You are right about that do you mind sharing with me how to get intouch with Mrs Amy Robinette. I have little to no knowledge about crypto currencies and I have seen the rise from 100 USD to over 50k USD in the last few years.

This is 99+% pure mainstream Toyota (same everything). Just watch Kirk Kreifels separate videos on both the Limited AWD (same as Doug's Solterra) and the XLE FWD. Done in the same general area as Doug's within days of this video. YOU'LL BE SHOCKED! 😲😲😲
You may want to give the running gear of your car a good going over, wheel bearings are a real issue on Outbacks of that era. My 2017 STI with essentially the same engine as the Outback XT gets just under 10L/100km on the highway lightly loaded, about 12L/100km highway with 3 passengers, a fully loaded trunk, roof carrier and roof and hitch mount bike racks (with 3 bikes) installed and about 11L/100km around town. Should be noted I'm not hypermileing or anything, quite the opposite if you ask my wife. I'd have to be driving like an absolute asshat to to hit the 14L/100km you are claiming.
@@randomperson-bi1xlI disagree. I’ve been to many places where this would perfectly fit the bill: short trips in small cities and towns whose roads get snow and/or outskirts are dirt roads where AWD and electric synergize. Granted, the charging could be better but not everyone lives in one metropolis with a destination of another one. I’m in one of the largest cities and just need a mid-range commuter that won’t vaporize wealth (gas). If I happen upon some mud, great. It’s a cool car and nothing else out there hits the value proposition.
One of the quirks that the bZ4x has that Doug didn't mention is that the glove box has been replaced by infrared leg warmers and the working for the heat pump. There is storage underneath the centre console. The 0 to 62 time is 6.5 seconds. There are plenty of reviews by other motor journalist on You Tube, on the BZ4X as it is the same vehicle.
That doesn't explain how Tesla has a heat pump, glovebox, generous central console storage space, more powerful motors, faster charging, faster performance (which requires bigger radiators under the hood), slightly bigger battery, WAY more boot space, and on top of that - space for a frunk. Where did you waste all that space, Toyobaru?
@@gvaley Tesla are on a different price point. Toyota build quality is far better than Tesla. Also Toyota and Subaru guarantee their batteries that they only loose 10% efficiency after 10 years. This is due to slower charging speeds. Regular fast charging degrades battery life.
@@MrPeteJMc Of course Toyobaru will be cheaper - who will buy a vastly unsuperior car otherwise? But the price means nothing because you won't be able to buy it. Toyota already announced it can build only 12 tou in 2022 - because of lack of batteries. Compare that to 1.5 mil Tesla will build this year. Knowing the Toyota-Subaru relationship, Subaru will probably build less.
@@gvaley Toyota's been banking on hybrids and hydrogen for so long and Subaru only has one mediocre hybrid. It's finally come to the point where they can't not make an EV but they're so far behind that this is the best they could figure out.
Yes, blows my mind how 215 hp is not enough for some people in a vehicle of this size. Easily enough power to pass on the highway. If only they had upped the battery size so range was competitive.

My wife and I are passengers very often in the back seat of our friend's CRV and we are astounded that is more comfortable and roomy by far than our own Ford Explorer.
I own a CR-V, and I do t know what sort of sorcery was summoned to make that happen. It feels like the space inside it somehow breaks the laws of physics.
Doug, why did you eliminate the daily/weekend score breakdowns? I can't speak for everyone but that was one of the best sections of your video presentation. Please bring it back.
I think he received a lot of complaints, both on its presence as well his particular ratings (a lot of nit picking on whether “Features” should’ve been a six or a seven.) Additionally, it cuts 90 to 120 seconds from the video, which allows him to do more actual content.
Part of the reason is that he doesn’t need to justify specific ratings now that he has such a deep catalog. He can make comparisons based on what he has already reviewed and just rate it. I agree though, it should come back.
Just PAUSE THE VIDEO when Doug show the score. It still shows the points on each separate category. Or follow the Doug Score link in the description of each video to his updated spreadsheet.
A lot of campgrounds have plug-ins for RVs already, so range for camping is potentially a minor issue, especially if sites start upgrading with EVs in mind. Charge at the car camping site, and then take it deeper to a trailhead seems perfectly reasonable.

Subaru has yet to build a car that looks attractive... Side note, why make a see-through lid for your wireless charger... instead of just a rubberized open tray? Not like you're able to set anything on top of that space anyway- it's not UNDER any other useful utility. It's added gloss plastic that you _have_ to touch, just for the sake of it lol. The lid is there to keep your phone from flying everywhere during spirited driving/evasive maneuvers. There are other solutions to that than a lid but then it wouldn't be as pretty in pictures

Once it was like an expensive car financing company, today he did a car show on Discovery+, at least he only shills for shit he actually believes in or thinks we’ll like
Add to that no front trunk and it's definitely enough to make buyers look elsewhere, especially given the charge time, range, and performance, even though it has similar price as rivals.
@@joeyn3590 agreed. Seriously. Hell even the off road isn't where they think it is. 220-ish miles combined EPA is NOT 220 miles off road. Unless you live directly near where you're off roading, that's going to kill a lot of your off road capability. I know Rivian and Jeep are both providing charging for the backwater areas to enable better off-roading, but they're JUST starting and that will take a few years to build out. Buying this to off road doesn't make any sense. For the price this will cost, based on the Toyota bZ4X pricing, you can buy an EV UTV like a Vanderhall Brawley and tow it to where you plan to off road.
The console has a lot more room than most and there is a storage area under the gear shift, neither of which were covered in this video. I own a Solterra now (only a few weeks in) but I don't feel like I am missing anything by the lack of glove box (yet... to be fair).
I currently own both a Subaru Forester and another EV brand. Good review Doug, but I don’t see one thing about this car that would convince me to purchase a Solterra over the similar EV competition. Subaru may be marketing this like other Subarus, but the reality of this car is that it’s meant for city driving. I don’t picture myself taking this car for adventuring when range and charging speed are vastly inferior to the competition. Maybe I’d consider if it’s a lot cheaper and I don’t need extra driving range, fast charging, a really good infotainment, or a glovebox (I.e. Again, this is the description of a pure city car….lol).
I agree, was expecting this to be a cheaper off-road ev besides the Rivians but the range and charge time is not good at all. Imo if they can make the range at least 270-300 miles then it might get a shot
Not quite a city car either, the vast majority of Subaru’s demographic is people in rural areas that have winter. Those that have to drive dirt roads, or through some heavy snow often. It’s a small demographic compared to other manufacturers, sure, but that’s their thing. Heated seats & steering wheel, heated wiper blades, standard full-time symmetrical AWD on all models except their “sports car”. It’s an EV for people that have to deal with winter and dirt roads. Not saying it’s great, but I wouldn’t call it a city car.
100% agree. I've had two Subaru Foresters (2015 and 2019, my current daily driver). I ended up ordering a Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD ER last November (still don't even have a production date!), but when I heard about this, I wondered if I should cancel that order. This should have been a slam dunk for me, but it's just so underwhelming. I would absolutely forget my phone in that cubby all the time. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea. I also don't understand a vehicle that is designed for off-road adventuring that has so little range, but more importantly, such slow charging speed. I think their partnership with Toyota really held them back here.
I was hoping Subaru will come out with a nice EV. I love Subaru, but forreal? The outside looks okay . But everything else. - No glove compartment - cloth interior dashboard (WTH, that's hard to clean if you make a mess) - no front trunk (waste of space) - UI interface sooo plain (looks like my android phone) - key fob only turn on the AC remotely (why not both ac and heat) - performances slow (though Subaru's about speed/power) Update Wow - just saw the Toyota EV . They look sooooo similar. It's like they just replaced the logo. Haha smh 🤣😂
Doug talks a lot about how customers expect their crossovers to get to 60 in ~4 s but I don't think that's the average consumer. If you stack this up next to the Outback it's comparable to the most powerful wilderness model regarding acceleration, off-roading geometry figures, and even the interior space. In the end Subaru customers want something practical and confidence inspiring, and I think that's what this is. (although I do agree that a larger battery option would be nice) - Impreza owner

I don't actually mind the wheel arch cladding on the new WRX too much, it can be painted body color to match and look acceptable. The real issue for me is the rear bumper that looks like a full diaper, you can't fix that with just paint.
If it’s anything like every other new Subaru model the tech will be 5-10 years behind every other car in its category but will cost at least 10-15% more.
@@davidmccarthy6061 I have a '20 Forester Touring, owned a '15 STi, a '15 Outback, a '08 FXT and '84 GL Wagon in the past, and I've driven every model they currently produce on more than one occasion, so tell me more about how I'm a hater. Subaru is *always* behind on the tech. Their CVT took years to get even close to the competition, they *still* don't offer a 360 camera (Eyesight X is their name for it) in the States, their infotainment is laggy and still uses past-gen GPS maps, their EyeSight system is clunky and their cars are overpriced in comparison to others. I love them because they're quirky, but they are not the company of technological advancement or value for price.
Well done sir! 😂🤣😄👍 A "bz4x". Where in there creepy minds were they thinking?! A name for a car? What are you driving? You might as well burp.. It's gonna be the same 🤣 Idiots.. 🤣
I don’t know if this is true, but apparently Toyota or Subaru isn’t making it, BYD is making it and then Toyota and Subaru are slapping their badge on it.
Spot on about the charge time and range issues. I've been waiting for a crossover with some of the basic adventure features lacking in all other models - namely a bit of reasonable ground clearance and an option to put a roof rack on when needed for adventure gear or the occasional run to the hardware store. Another understated feature that's important is being able to "hide" your mobile phone under a cover. Most other EV makers force you to have it out in the open to charge or be usable. Where I live there are major fines for having your mobile phone visible anywhere, using it or not. Add a back wiper and solve the range/charging issues and they have a winner. Until then... limited appeal. Knowing them, Toyota and Subaru will probably decide that no one wants an "adventure EV" because of this and make all of their future ones car-like, LOL.
Fun fact: This car is being advertised for heavily by one of my local car dealerships in Nuuk, Greenland x) That AWD and ground clearance is a major selling point up here xD
Only 220 ish miles. My forester gets 400 miles out the full tank of gas. Unless they do better they will never sell this car to me. And I want a forester that is all electric.
When I first saw it I thought it looked like Toyota design language. At 13:10, Doug says it was a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota which makes more sense now.
Doug score for Practicality is a little high IMO. Deductions for Range, Charging speed, no Frunk. Additional points for ground clearance. This looks like it has a little less cargo room in the back, because of the inward slope to accommodate the tail light shelf.. But at the end of the day, it IS called the Doug score! :) Glad to see this review, great work.
For a vehicle that is supposed to go "off the grid" it sure needs to connect to "the grid" fairly often. Our '19 Outback 3.6R Touring can get over 500 miles to a tank on the freeway and can go much farther off the grid.
you would think the difference between 6 and 8 ins would be negligible but no...my wife has informed me that the extra 2 inches provides a much more satisfying ride
It's kinda cool but as a Subaru fan I'm disappointed to be honest. There are just so many little things changed or left out that I don't like compared to other/older Subarus. Also really funny that Subaru messed up the steering wheel covering the gauge cluster now, when they had gauges that followed the wheel up and down in the 80s. 😂
Love to see Doug breaking into the huge advertising $$$ with a literal TV commercial. They must've offered big bucks to break up the cars & bids promotion haha.
No matter what car or drivetrain, I will never understand or want a dial for controlling the park and drive modes, especially if it’s within reach of the passenger

He only started doing cars and bids because his own company. And it's cool to see upcoming reviews. This portion of the video was a sponsored portion of the video which seemed quite lengthy for only being a sponsored portion of the video.
Do you think maybe the engineers thought of that when they designed it? It has to pass crash-testing in several different countries, so I bet they know a little bit more about airbag design than you.
@@rcsor3 I see where your coming from but take a look at how often Tesla has recalls. Tesla even recently had a recall for there own airbags so I don’t know.
With the way things are headed with EVs, the differences between each brand are starting to become much more blurred. With the exception of those who make their own battery tech, there just isn't a lot you can do to make your car stand out. The stupid thing is, I really just want something basic. I don't care about a giant touchscreen, every little thing being power-operated, or an advanced computer system with hundreds of sensors and self-driving capabilities. All this crap does is dramatically increase the cost of the car, adds points of failure, adds weight, and drains battery life.
Exactly. I think that’s why the RAV4 Prime was so popular. It’s a normal RAV4 with about 40 miles of electric range. Why can’t we have some normal vehicles that just happen to be electric?
The crazy thing is adding a screen is a cheaper alternative then using switches and buttons when you really think about it. Yet we pay more for the inconvenience.
Great video as usual Doug. Would love to see a video on the Toyota Corolla cross if it’s out yet (I don’t even know lol) me and my girlfriend are thinking about getting one and I know a lot of viewers like to see videos about common every day cars every once in a while. Thank you 😊
Seems to me that smaller rims, more tire, would go a long ways towards making this car more off road capable...
Or maybe a real engine and some ground clearance would help lol
It's like a G-Wagen on 22s and low-profile tires. Defeats the purpose.
Wheels. Not rims
This is a Toyota with Subaru badges, TheTropher just did a video on a EV Toyota just different badges.
I was wondering why people like crossover tbh, is just a jacked up station wagon with ugly plastic fender
Same in the 350Z. Good idea.
The Volkswagen ID.4 does this
I think the Subaru XT did that.

@Paul S Paul, please allow me to say that the only "off road" that car will see is at most a... say curb?
I might be wrong but I think it has to do something with having the best aerodynamic possible in order to maximize electric range.
@@Dryloch hey man, those Pacificas are freakin NICE. honestly, id get one and I dont even have a family lmao.
Which is why I love Tesla
This is the first EV Doug has reviewed that I thought I would like and ended up not liking. I tend to like Subaru, but the range and slow charging seems like a deal breaker for an "adventure" vehicle.
Yeah tbh Subaru and toyota messed up
Some things that seem minor at first glance would get really annoying as an owner too. I hate volume buttons rather than a knob. The missing glove box is another weird one.
I also thought I would like this, but the video shows it's not for me.
You can’t be any more right
I could honestly live with 220miles in a daily driver, I think the largest issue would be attempting to use this as a member of it's target demographic.
For EV, you can’t bring a charging station with you
All manufacturers seem to think you have to make an electric car weird. Just make a normal car that is electrically powered.
People that like electric cars are heavily status-conscious. Not only do they need everyone to know they're driving an EV, they need to be reminded of it every time they get in. It's just like when hybrids started getting big. Fewer people bought the hybrids that looked like regular cars-they wanted the Prius with the distinctive "hybrid look".
thats the one thing that puts me off from these cars. i hate the lack of volume knobs and controls that aren’t touch or inside of a screen.
@@channell11 I rented a Ford Fusion hybrid for a month. Every time I turned it off, it would say on the screen “thank you for driving a hybrid”
Manufacturers do not seem to understand the concept of "normal design" with EVs...
Is that a curse? No. Customers are still lining up to buy them 😂
@Paul S model 3 does NOT look normal
The idea that every EV needs to have fast acceleration is ridiculous. Hopefully more companies will ignore the absolutely useless 0-60 times.
agreed... sure, its fun. but that fun goes away after a few months (previous Tesla owner here).
I guess people found the I-cockpit controversial because they can't fit in them well.

Totally agree.
This has been mentioned a lot of times already.

This and the Toyota bZ4X don't just share a few parts on the interior.
They have almost completely identical interiors.

A lot of campgrounds have plug-ins for RVs already, so range for camping is potentially a minor issue, especially if sites start upgrading with EVs in mind. Charge at the car camping site, and then take it deeper to a trailhead seems perfectly reasonable.
Powerful acceleration is hard on the battery, fast charging is hard on the battery. The Doug score is missing one key criteria; reliability!

It's not like this car is about to blast your phone away under any acceleration either so... why complicate/uglify more of the car..
The lid is there to keep your phone from flying everywhere during spirited driving/evasive maneuvers. There are other solutions to that than a lid but then it wouldn't be as pretty in pictures
I always liked the style of the brat, and the early 2000s Outback wagon. The floating windows killed it for me though.
@@afink25 I think that's a lame reason though, for something that will almost never happen. The evasive maneuvers end of it anyway. I have a wireless charging tray in my car and mine actually has horsepower and handling capability lol... my phone has never flown out of its tray.

I know a lotta people don’t like it when Doug does a sponsor deal but have you noticed, every time he’s ever had someone sponsor a video, it’s something he’s into. Once it was like an expensive car financing company, today he did a car show on Discovery+, at least he only shills for shit he actually believes in or thinks we’ll like
At least he has a reason to sponsor, and not just because of the money
With how many cars are in this segment now, something as simple as not having a glove box will make this one fail.
Add to that no front trunk and it's definitely enough to make buyers look elsewhere, especially given the charge time, range, and performance, even though it has similar price as rivals.
Agree with you guys.
Hopeless EV anyway.
@@balthazarduclos2673 ya the fact that they believe off-road performance makes up for all the glaring issues on road is laughable. Rly bad car lol
Not saying it’s great, but I wouldn’t call it a city car.
its a toyota bz4x with different case. not a subaru that you bring to wilderness
@@akhyarrayhka4048 I didn’t say bring it to wilderness. I said it’s for snowy climates.
I love that key AC button every electric car should have that
@Donovan Lewis yup. And it’s not just AC, but heat, and control charging. Heck the 2011 Nissan Leaf had it.
@Donovan Lewis What happens if your phone dies or you leave it at home or someone else needs to drive the car? Tesla has a card key.
Thanks for sponsoring part of the video Discovery+! That car show looks awful and I appreciate Doug’s channel and style even more now!
I was hoping Subaru will come out with a nice EV. I love Subaru, but forreal? The outside looks okay . But everything else.
- No glove compartment
- cloth interior dashboard (WTH, that's hard to clean if you make a mess)
- no front trunk (waste of space)
- UI interface sooo plain (looks like my android phone)
- key fob only turn on the AC remotely (why not both ac and heat)
- performances slow (though Subaru's about speed/power)
Update
Wow - just saw the Toyota EV .
(although I do agree that a larger battery option would be nice)

Average consumer isn't buying an all electric compact crossover. Buyers looking at Solterra will look at what else they can buy for the same money.

How confident do folks feel taking electric cars on camping / fishing trips? Idk if I’d trust anything in the market for a 5 day get away or something. In some areas, even finding gas can be a mission let alone a charging station lol
Went camping with a person with a Chevy bolt back in 2019. Only a weekend, but they had no worries…and the bolts were a little more undeveloped back then
Agreed. I like the hybrid idea better overall. Better range and actual MPG in the long run, IMO/limited experience.
If there's an RV hook up where you stay, you can charge the car from that. More traditional camping might be a problem though.

Subaru needs to really get some new designers. The fenders just ruin a lot of their models. They should be ashamed of what they did to the WRX.
Subaru's designs have consistently been getting worse since ~2017

I don't actually mind the wheel arch cladding on the new WRX too much, it can be painted body color to match and look acceptable. The real issue for me is the rear bumper that looks like a full diaper, you can't fix that with just paint.

They need to make a wagon with high clearance and with a roof rack that isn't 7ft off the ground. Like the old AMC Eagle wagon. Those were badass.
Fun fact: This car is being advertised for heavily by one of my local car dealerships in Nuuk, Greenland x) That AWD and ground clearance is a major selling point up here xD
thats cool
Only 220 ish miles. My forester gets 400 miles out the full tank of gas. Unless they do better they will never sell this car to me. And I want a forester that is all electric.
When I first saw it I thought it looked like Toyota design language. At 13:10, Doug says it was a joint venture between Subaru and Toyota which makes more sense now.

Honestly I can’t help but feel like Subaru is a shell of its old self.
I seen other reviews state why it has a slower charge rate and this is so the battery will still have 90% charge capacity after 10 years
For a vehicle that is supposed to go "off the grid" it sure needs to connect to "the grid" fairly often. Our '19 Outback 3.6R Touring can get over 500 miles to a tank on the freeway and can go much farther off the grid.
