Thanks! Yeah, the machete and large fixed knife category can be combined too like with the RTAK II or Junglas or TOPS Power Eagle, those 9-12 inch "knives" that can work as machetes too
Cool video Israel. I like how you broke down the various categories (large tactical/utility fixed, medium tactical/utility fixed, etc and so forth) and talked about the various applicable uses of each knife. I see you took a lot of thought and consideration in your selections. Great vid man.
I think 3 inch blade length is the most popular EDC length, from talking to many many people, like you said, it is what they can carry legally and around a city or office.
I love many of the knives I've acquired over the last couple years. But for a while I had just Becker BK9, an Izula, a Mora, Byrd Crossbill and a swiss army knife. I look back with some nostalgia on that. It was simple and they did everything I wanted.
He's one of my favorite channels. I am not sure what the nature of his medical setbacks are though. You could ask his sister, she has made some posts on his channel.
There are many options, but you can't go wrong with a Fallkniven A1 for the hard use and a Scandi knife for the utility, check out knives by Helle, Marttiini, or Mora for good Scandi knives.
I have three of their knives, the Condor Bowie, the 571, and the Carbinox. The Carbinox was the best quality and most expensive, but was still only $40. I'm not sure what their best quality knife is, but that one is the best I have from them.
Yes that length would be medium sized to me, I have a SOG M40 Ops knife that is similar, except a drop point tip, and it is a good knife so I think the Seal Pup would be equally good quality.
I enjoyed watching your video. Educational and informative. Now I want one of each in all different shapes and sizes. Knives are fun. They are affordable compared to guns and can be carried and used.
Thank you for the quick reply on both videos! I will look at all these knives. Honestly, I like the look of the Cold Steel SRK knives but I want to make sure what I buy is practical and useable. Thanks again for the advice!
You're definitely a collector, I'm already subscribed to your channel lol. collectors can use their stuff too, I know guys with dozens of guns, but they still shoot them all when they have the time.
ever since I was a grunt(USMC) and my first ka bar I see knives as absolute necessary items for all reasons and worth what one needs to spend for those perfect beautifully made blades.its like crack, once in the interest your hooked.never too many blades! (Chuck R.777)
I really like the pilot knife you show here. It just conjures thoughts of quality. This video makes me want to have one very utilitarian and high quality knife in each genre, even though i collect overall. Thanks israel
Very interesting video man. I agree, 5 types of blade. My choice in style is different, but hey, to each their own :). Hatchet/tomahawk (chopping or defense), large fixed/machete (heavy use), mid fixed bushcraft/skinner (4ish inch blade for lighter use like carving etc..), EDC pocket clip knife (3ish inch for utility use), and a multitol such as a leatherman or a swiss army for everything else. Great video man, thanks for sharing!
Yeah man I agree totally on all fronts. If you have more than 5 knives you are a collector. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I also agree with your knife selections. The more I learn about bushcraft the more I think it's all about the smaller scandi knives. Wicked video Juggle.
whenever someone says they're not a collector i guarantee you'll still find like 4 dozen knives at their house lol, i think people like to have a lot of options :]
I used to have alot of big and medium fixed blade knives but now i only got the Strider WP and i have sold all my other knives. I find the Strider WP to be the best ultimate knife for me and i am a outdoorsguy :) I can do almost every thing i want with that knife except batoning bigger pieces of wood, and its also small enough to carry in urban areas. Try it and you will love the Strider WP. I put some custom made micarts handels on it and now its the best knife i have ever owned.
I suppose you can call me a collector as I have over 60 knives and hawks. My edc knives - folders: TOPS Xcest Delta, Victorinox Hunter. Fixed blade- TOPS Baghdad Box Cutter, Bootlegger2, and Prather War Bowie. Plus, some days I also carry a CRKT Kangee T-Hawk. If I go camping I'll carry my Entrek Ranger too. Also keep an Ontario Marine Raider Bowie, Tops Firestrike45, Stryker Defender Tool, a medium size axe and a SOG Voodoo Hawk in my truck.
Gerber offers two maritime knives I am aware of pilot's knife and co-pilot's knife - both for use on white water rafting adventures. They are made of highly polished surgical stainless steel and are made in Italy.
I have the same idea as well. I carry two large, one medium, one small, all full tang knives, and two good folders. But I have a ton of knives, so it's hard to choose what to carry...lol.
Say Heah Is, When I first bought my BK-5, I thought "man they were right, It's just a large camp knife" Because it's lite in hand. But I teamed mine up with my BK-15 and took it on some long hikes with a few stops in between, The BK-5 performed real good. Infact almost as good as my BK-7. I'm actually impressed with mine, I also got another one when I bought the Becker Limited Edition, Even though I had the BK-4 and BK5, Just to buy the Bundok BK-20 which Dwarfs the BK-9. Aces. God job, Nice to see you.
Great food for thought. You always have interesting angles and concepts. Here, I agree with the concept, but perhaps you also need to add the "location" aspect. For example, I may want a large fixed blade at my cabin or boat, I may want a Mora in each of my cars, etc. etc...So, maybe it's not five, it's multiples of five, based on how many locations you want the knives readily available. Just ramblin on here a bit.... Happy New year !
Well you've minimally reviewd the backpacker on your neck knife video but I picked it up for $15 and for that (1095?) steel is great and the blade retention in the sheath is perfect for keeping hooked to the inside of my leather jacket for CC, the BK9 is a beauty when you customize her to your preference, I stripped the blade of the coating and polished it up but kept the coating on the handle to prevent rust, lost the handles though (idk how...)
Yeah,I love to collect knives!By you standarts I'm collector)))I like the video,When I'm in the bush I have with me my Cold Steel Bushman,Mora 2000,Voctorinox One Hended Trecker.Pretty much like you describe it.I'm agreed with you-ONE knife it is not enough)))But it is hard to choose wich one to pick)))Nice video, thanks for sharing!
Oh, I agree again. Many types of blades can and are used in ways deemed inappropriate. But hey, we use what we have at our disposal. The differences in blades is not so much what you should do with it, but, what you CAN do with it.
Hmm, does fire count? I would have a small firestarter, a lighter, a photon light, and maybe one mid sized flashlight and one big security guard flashlight. Not an expert on the types though. I know a lot of my friends with shotguns like Surefire lights for them.
Great video. Based on my experience I would add one more category namely multitools. I personally EDC one or another MT every day. I find that it is more useful than just a knife because it has more applications. I'd love to hear your thoughts on MTs too.
Four Spyderco knives mule team in Magnacut, Serrata, Hundred Pacer and delica Wharncliffe in HAP40. Add TOPS Knives Ucon Hawk and Earth Skills knife if going camping in the outdoors
You really need to do a review of an opinel carbone. They are amazing. best value for money knife ive ever bought. they are folders, but my larger ones serve really well in the small fixed blade catergory. I dont doubt you've seen em around... but it would be cool to see what you think if them. Great video, as always, keep it up!
I find mine indispensable, and I am a fair share of a knife collector, have plenty of knives of all different sizes. Whenever I plan to cut cardboard around the house, though, I always reach into the drawer for my EAB, never my pocket/waistband for my EDC/bigger (tactical) knife, not even my multitool blades.
Great discussion bro! I'm a Becker fan. Love my BK7 and BK14. Thinking about getting the BK16 or the TOPS BOB. Love to see a review of the BOB. Might sell my unused SRK V5 and get the BOB. Keep em coming.
Good vid especially the part about not needing to buy the most expensive!! Personally I'd be willing to by pass the large knife for a bigger cutter, either a hatchet/hawk or a barong/parang/golok, but thats me. Keep bringing 'em!!
Really nice video, I like rants and discussions like these. Oh, and I found out that I'm a knife collector :) Btw, I like to carry a sturdy medium sized fixed blade and a small ax when I'm out camping, and just my little benchmade 707 when I'm in the city. You kind of turned me on to the zero tolerance 100 knife, thanks!
I'd recommend a utility blade as well, perhaps a Gerber EAB. Something that you can beat up on without caring about. You may address this in the video, but I haven't gotten to that point yet.
I would say at least half of the working class people I know down here just carry a folding box cutter. they're cheap, accessible and you don't have to know how sharpen. and even though its in that super small catagory, its usually good enough... I usually edc a bm51, its like 3 ounces with a 4.25" blade.
Great discussion! I have to admit I'm a bit of a collector, especially spyderco. I'm just getting back into a little camping and have no fixed blade knives. I'm currently looking for 2 good med. sized fixed blades. One that will work for batoning and a 2nd. for utility and cooking duties. What would be your favorites in this category?
Good informative review . Wow $25 to $35 for a Condor Barong. Damn !!! In Canada as usual we get shafted. I paid $56 for the Condor Barong & I thought that was cheap compared to other places that sell it.
My 5 knife list ....I dont have any over 6" blades anymore I dont find a need for them. 1/.6inch Blade Ontario SP47 2/ Bacho(Mora) SS blade (doubles as a good fishing knife) 3/ Vitorinox Huntsman (the best folding knife in the world) 4/ Pitbull neck knife 5/ Opinel no#8 these are the knives I use all the time and dont need any others the rest of my knives are just collection items now I did use my BK7 but replaced it with the SP47. All of my knives are modified to my use. If I need anything bigger I use a machete (I have an 18" and a 24") and /or one of my hatchets
One of these days you gotta review a straight razor. I was always curious if there's a small high high carbon steel neck knife that can work for shaving.
i am saddened by the fact that not a single esee did not make the cut into this vid especially over the ontario pilots knife *tear*. Another great vid!
I stopped buying knives a while back. I find it more fun and pleasing to make them myself. Of coarse i still buy folders because i dont have the recources to make folders.
Great video, It's all true you said, but it's hard to buy only one of each type. I really don't have all type yet, but I have more than one of same kind. You have shown some BIG knives, what do you think about the Zombie Killer line from Ka-Bar, specially the War Sword?
I don't think it's for everyone, but I have four knives that can pretty much do everything. Ontario Kukri, KA-BAR Fighting Utility 7'', Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto, and Spyderco Paramilitary2. I agree with your philosophy to, but this is just what I have. If I had to have a fifth, I would have to have my Victorinox SwissTool.
Well I was just replying on the words you used, maybe you meant something else then, but just watching the video once (aside from again now) the impression is that "buying more than two knives makes you a collector". Oh well, nice video either way and the general information and idea is there. Cheers.
Your probably right. Myself, I live on the prairies and play in the Rockies. I COULD easily get by with one 6 inch(ish) Bowie style fixed blade and one smaller folder. But what fun would that be? ;)
A folding saw, Bark River STS-8 or CS Trailmaster and either of my Helle knives would do everything I'd need just fine :) So three tools, large fixed, small scand and a saw. If I could I'd take the CS gurkha kukri and my Gav Spartan as well though :)
After years of acquiring knives, I've come to realize that you only need one....more.
Joseph Pepe Castillo then I tire of it sell it. then I justify another :). always asked what I need it for ...just cause
LOLOLOLOL
😂
Thats so true!! Same with me.
Thanks, yeah I have a couple Opinel knives, they are great especially being so light weight, even the larger ones
I do have a Leatherman Wave but I usually use the other tools on it more than the blade so I usually don't think of it as a knife.
Well USMC Ka-Bars have a narrow stick tang, so it can snap from batoning sometimes.
I think 3 inch blade length is the most popular EDC length, from talking to many many people, like you said, it is what they can carry legally and around a city or office.
I agree! And yes, the Magnum Camp is a great knife for all occasions, even the price is very reasonable, I like it a bit better than my USMC Ka-Bar.
Thank you. That is an Aquatec Raptor Diving Knife, made in Germany, price about $35 on Amazon. It is non magnetic, too.
I love many of the knives I've acquired over the last couple years. But for a while I had just Becker BK9, an Izula, a Mora, Byrd Crossbill and a swiss army knife. I look back with some nostalgia on that. It was simple and they did everything I wanted.
I'm not a collector, I'm an addict
+The Dude Me too. They say admitting it is the first step :]
WeAllJuggleKnives Yeah but I'm happy with my "addiction". When I'm bored I just look at my knives and this alone kinda makes me happy :)
Haha You mean I'm not the only one that destresses by just unrolling and handling all my knives?
Andrew Crepea Jep, seems like you're not :D
forril
He's one of my favorite channels. I am not sure what the nature of his medical setbacks are though. You could ask his sister, she has made some posts on his channel.

Yeah Bark River is awesome, I tried to get a Bark River Northstar Companion for my small fixed blades video, but they were all sold out.
Hey, thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it!
I have three of their knives, the Condor Bowie, the 571, and the Carbinox. The Carbinox was the best quality and most expensive, but was still only $40. I'm not sure what their best quality knife is, but that one is the best I have from them.
Good point, the XSmall category could be a Gerber EAB.
Yes that length would be medium sized to me, I have a SOG M40 Ops knife that is similar, except a drop point tip, and it is a good knife so I think the Seal Pup would be equally good quality.
"Execute a fish".....classic
I enjoyed watching your video. Educational and informative. Now I want one of each in all different shapes and sizes. Knives are fun. They are affordable compared to guns and can be carried and used.
SanFranciscoBay and knives dont run out of ammo
Thank you for the quick reply on both videos! I will look at all these knives. Honestly, I like the look of the Cold Steel SRK knives but I want to make sure what I buy is practical and useable. Thanks again for the advice!
You're definitely a collector, I'm already subscribed to your channel lol. collectors can use their stuff too, I know guys with dozens of guns, but they still shoot them all when they have the time.
Yeah the Mega Manix is very impressive and very versatile !
Every knife out there is the favorite of someone, so if you bash on a knife too hard you are guaranteed to get the haters!
The Carbinox is $40, the Aquatec Raptor is $35, and the Silver Stag Skinner was around $80.
ever since I was a grunt(USMC) and my first ka bar I see knives as absolute necessary items for all reasons and worth what one needs to spend for those perfect beautifully made blades.its like crack, once in the interest your hooked.never too many blades!
(Chuck R.777)
I haven't tried the War Sword. But the ZK Tanto is really good, it chops very well. And I plan to get the ZK Chop Stick Machete.
Yeah, the tip is for animals or defense. I think E-Neps are nice all around designs too.
Great plan, bro. I love the XL Manix. Keep me updated!
I really like the pilot knife you show here. It just conjures thoughts of quality. This video makes me want to have one very utilitarian and high quality knife in each genre, even though i collect overall. Thanks israel

Made in Finland ! I am proud of my country!
Hey, thanks, glad you liked it.
Cool, I have a BK9, too, and the Benchmark Backpacker, but I haven't reviewed them.

I've never collected straight razors, but I wouldn't mind one or two high quality ones.

The Pilotsurvival knife (1st) looks badass!
Awesome videos btw.

You still answer comments on a 5 year old video while having over 80k subs, thats amazing, hats down
thanks, I try to answer as many as I can!
Great vid! Fast becoming my favourite knife channel on youtube :D
Good "Philosophical" perspective...
Thanks for sharing.!
I've always wanted to try a BK9, I've heard good things about them
You really need to do a review of an opinel carbone. They are amazing. best value for money knife ive ever bought. they are folders, but my larger ones serve really well in the small fixed blade catergory. I dont doubt you've seen em around... but it would be cool to see what you think if them.

Cool, a Kukri could also work in some environs.
I find mine indispensable, and I am a fair share of a knife collector, have plenty of knives of all different sizes. That maritime knife is badass. It looks like something Black Manta would use to kill Aquaman.
Yeah, it's a true classic!

Very valid points on this video. Ive always thought 5 is more bueno than the popular 3 knife mindset... Good videos israel!
I would say at least half of the working class people I know down here just carry a folding box cutter. they're cheap, accessible and you don't have to know how sharpen. and even though its in that super small catagory, its usually good enough... Well it sounds like you are both a collector and a user, like most people.

I'm currently looking for 2 good med. sized fixed blades. One that will work for batoning and a 2nd. for utility and cooking duties. What would be your favorites in this category?
The Carbinox, cool, Knifeworks sells them.
Good informative review . Wow $25 to $35 for a Condor Barong. Damn !!!
In Canada as usual we get shafted. I paid $56 for the Condor Barong & I thought that was cheap compared to other places that sell it.
The TOPS B.O.B. Fieldcraft Knife is worth every penny. That and a good hawk/hatchet or machete is all you need in the bush.
Thanks, congrats on getting it!
Hey thanks, Trent
that bushman is freaking awesome
Thanks! I'll check out the TOPS BOB
Fish and human are natural enemies in The Wild lol
That is why I have more than 2 ... A collector can also be a user and having options is never a bad thing. I think you misinterpreted.
Good points. Expanding that out from just knives, what about Light-sources? How many/what types do you advise? Thanks.
i am saddened by the fact that not a single esee did not make the cut into this vid especially over the ontario pilots knife *tear*. Another great vid!
I only actually have 2 knives. The cold steel GI Tanto and the Kudu. And they have done everything I needed them to.
Sorry lol. I'm sure my ESEE HEST knife could serve very well as the small fixed blade
Welcome!
hey, thanks, Anubis!
Imagine if I sold them all and just got totally into airsoft or something lol
I stopped buying knives a while back. I find it more fun and pleasing to make them myself. Of coarse i still buy folders because i dont have the recources to make folders.
Thanks my friend
But what fun would that be? ;)
I've never bought a SOG from Budk, they're lower-priced at other places.
Lol! Great one, man. Yeah this addiction can be dangerous :]
A folding saw, Bark River STS-8 or CS Trailmaster and either of my Helle knives would do everything I'd need just fine :) So three tools, large fixed, small scand and a saw. If I could I'd take the CS gurkha kukri and my Gav Spartan as well though :)
