    oh my god, that's funny!
    love it...
But, (the proverbial but with one T)...
7dehydrocholesterol in skin cells, can either become cholesterol with the help of enzyme, or, it can be mechanically synthesized (UVB+heat) to cholecalciferol (7dehydrocholesterol is created in those skin cells, no need for the liver-bing-bong you described)
(cholecalciferol is not active, but it is highly preferential for many cells as all cells then can go on to create the further metabolite calcitriol the active vitd3 hormone)
(*There is no vitamin d ergocalciferol in plants (ergo=fungus).
(*Supplemental cholecalciferol is exactly the same compound synthesized in our skin.
(*margarine has vit d only if fortified and it's still garbage
(*cholecalciferol freely diffused, so mostly nix on that intestinal absorption bit,
(*as far as i know, there is no enzymatic feedback loop for the creation of 25OHD
(*the first hydroxylation is of cholecalciferol in the liver, the second of calcidiol in the kidney into calcitriol
(*don't forget retinoid X receptor (RXR)
    ....then
cholecalciferol will have small amount free, and mostly bound by VDBP/albumin (if ingested may also be hitching on cholesterol transport.
Some of that cholecalciferol will indeed reach liver cells and be hydroxylated to calcidiol and which then goes into systemic circulation, and that will mostly be bound by VDVBP/albumin, some of it will be free, only some of that calcidiol (no willy nilly conversions here - by physiologic demand only, we wouldn't want a lot of active calcitriol in system circulation: endocrine system) when it reaches the kidney (yadada) will get hydroxylated into 1,25OH2D3, the active hormone (the other two: cholecalciferol and calcidiol are not "active" but are highly utilized by the autocrine/paracrine/intracrine/juxta yougetthepicture system- think immune modulation.
    please do read:
On breast milk/vitamin d- Here is an article describing very well the basics of the metabolites, please do read: The Role of the Parent Compound Vitamin D with Respect to Metabolism and Function: Why Clinical Dose Intervals Can Affect Clinical Outcomes: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3849670/
