Awesome review. Wish I had that golf swing. Thanks guys. I have Apex 19, but I think DCB is the way to go for me in the new models.
Thanks for watching, Jim!
Jim, Keep your clubs. I game the apex pro 19 and both apex 19 are Top quality. Spend the $1600 on a new Driver and 3 wood. Or if your set like me, spend that cash on a golf vacation with the Boys!
It would be good to see a high and mid handicap player test them. To actually see the forgiveness and playability
We've got that in the works!
Good because this is useless to a majority of golfers
The problem with a high handicapper performing the test is the results will be too erratic where it may not look the apex to be a hot selling point base on this good video comparison .. just my thought
Callaway offers a combo set with 4-7 in DCB and 8-G in Apex 21.
I am around 15 handicap and have a set of dcb's coming, 5 to pw. I think at 65 years I'm too old for a blended set. What caliber of golfer would you say a blended set of Apex and DCB's would work for?
You guys do great reviews! However, for an iron set like these (Apex and DCBs), it would be great to see someone hitting them that would be more the type to use them…75-80mph 7 iron swing…Tom clearly is more of a forged/Apex Pro type guy, so these aren’t going to react the same way with his pro-esque swing speed…He’s doing the best he can to convey the details of the club, but all the numbers don’t help. Would be good to see someone with a 75-80mph swing hit them to see what types of numbers they are getting…or, if Tom can slow it down to that range (very difficult to do)…Otherwise, great stuff!
I've had the Apex 21 for about a month and I was hitting them on a very windy day and the slightly less spin helped with control. My 7 iron spins at around 6000rpm.
DCB look perfect for me as a Senior 15 handicapper golfer ,Great video Thanks
Thanks for watchinG!!
What a great review video guys. I just got fit for the Aprex 21. I tried the Apex DCB,Apex 21 pro and the Apex 21 got the nod. They are great feeling clubs to hit. Callaway has done an absolutely brilliant job with these clubs. 👍👍
This would make a great combo set. 4, 5 DCB, 6-p Apex if the gaps are consistent.
Of course, we always preach consistent gapping when you do a combo set!
You could always have them custom because they can all be adjusted to strength and weaken the loft +/- 2°
Seems like Callaway has followed Srixon with their ZX5 and ZX7 and made these two models so close in looks with identical lofts so they would make a a very compatible combo set.
other way around
Just bought a set of DCB. These guys are the best in the business when it comes to golf reviews. Don't waste your time watching anyone else. These guys are the reason a do business with 2nd Swing! Play Well RJUnleashed
Good introductory discussion of Callaway Apex 21. I need to check them out. Thanks.
Thank you for watching!
So if you remove the two shots with the Apex 21 where he left the face open or was intentionally attempting to shape his shot, the dispersion pattern for the two clubs is virtually identical. The DCBs goes marginally father because of the lower lofts, but the results seemingly drive a stake thru the heart of the argument that cavity backs are "more forgiving" with their own clubs! I would love to see someone load up a golf robot with blades, player's distance, and game improvement from the same manufacturer, and show just how much "forgiveness" is really inherent with the different clubs.
Need a SMOKE option - which they offered previously and look great!
The smoke looks awesome! Thank you for watching!
Nice review !!! Apex 21 DCB is stunning. I'm looking forward whether 2nd swing will do comparison review on Apex 21 DCB against other irons which have the same loft on its #7 iron (30 degree), such as: Ping G425, Cobra King Forged Tec BLACK, Titleist T200, and Cleveland Launcher UHX.
That is on our list of items to complete when we get our fitting components in, and we hope to have other talent hitting to compare the models as Thomas doesn't quite need the level of forgiveness or stronger loft on his 7iron
Excellent review !!!
I just started golfing heavily this season. Would DCB be a good investment to grow with? Or just go right with apex standard?
Thanks - one comment. If you're going to say things like the DCB has a slightly thicker top line then the Apex, or there's a wider sole on the DCB, why not show them both side by side so we can see what you're talking about? It paints the picture so to speak rather than leaving the viewer wondering exactly what you mean.
Hmm, need to test the Apex DCB vs Mizuno JPX 921 HM and see which ones I do better with.
Another good video boys. I currently have the epic forged would you say these are a better iron. ?
Both are forged which is good if feel is important. DCB and STD Apex are not as strong lofted so probably wont go as far as Epic Forged
Love your channel, but one of the most anticipated irons of new season 3 shots? Less chatter more data and hitting, or overlay chatter with shots.
Thanks for watching! We've got a lot more coming for the Apex 21 irons.
Thinking about upgrading. Was lucky enough to play a round with Apex 21. I enjoyed they way the clubs sounded on ball strike compared to my Ping G irons. Not sure I’m going to buy them. I’m a mid handicapper. The Apex clubs had TT Elevate shafts (Reg flex). That’s heavier than my Pings. Instead of upgrading my irons, I’m going to work on my swing path.
Would you pick Mavrik or Apex on overall quality?
DCB looks a lot like the 19 Big Bertha, the sole, and top line look very similar. DCB probably has a tad less offset and lofts are almost identical.
Having come from the 19 berthas, the dcbs look much smaller than the berthas to me. Curious why you think they look similar? Agree lofts are close, although regular apex lofts are also similar.
How do these compare to the Ping 425 irons that you reviewed yesterday?
Thanks Ken! The Apex 21 DCB is more comparable to G425. Apex 21 will be more workable and more compact.
@@2ndswing Thanks for the honest comparison.
Thomas,
How would you compare/ contrast the standard Apex 21 vs 2019 P790 irons in terms of feel, performance and forgiveness? Thanks, Joe
Your thoughts between the Apex DCB's versus the Srixon ZX4's ? Thanks in advance !
What model of golf bag is that in the video?
Do you remember what shafts you used in the DCB set? If it was the elevate 85 stiff, how did the weight feel?
Thank you always for your superb content! Would be great if you could give us your take on the new Apex 21 iron vs the Apex X forged. How do they compare?
Thanks for watching. Stay tuned we have that on our list of videos coming soon.
Thanks Guys! Great review. I game the Apex pro 19 and will not be changing for 21. The Apex Pro 19 looks way better and sounds better. Are the 21 blade length bigger than the 19? I like a small club head.
From heel to toe the Apex Pro 21 is slightly longer, but the topline of the Apex Pro 21 is noticeably thinner. It really does look more like a blade than the Apex Pro 19
30deg (DCB) vs 30.5deg lofts per Callaway website.
Good to note, thanks Ken!
SVB Looks like finally a worthy upgrade from the mizuno mx200.
Can you compare Apex DCB 21 to Big Bertha 21
We will add that to our list! Thank you for watching!
Love your reviews normally but trying to hit fades with the regular Apex and then making a comparison with DCB is a little misleading - this needs to be done again I think
What is the head size of Apex 21 compared to Apex 19 from heel to toe? Longer? Same?
Would you do a Callaway apex 21 dcb vs wilson 2022 D9 forged iron comparison?
Is the width of the DBC bottom groove wider than the regular APEX bottom groove? if so by how much
Im a high handicapper and i'm playing the 17' Callaway Epics...I really want to check out the Apex DCB...i prefer high trajectory shots. My 7 iron is around 165ish carry. Would these be a nice upgrade over something like the Maverick Max or BB B21's?
Apex is a night and day difference from the epic
Do you guys have a full set of the DCB irons? If so, are the PW, 9 and 8 too chunky? Do you comparison pictures to the Apex 21? Thanks.
Not yet. We are still watinng on fitting components and assets. DCB will be a little larger than Apex 21, noticeably in the sole.
@@2ndswing thanks
@@2ndswing do you guys do online fittings?
Is there any benefit to staying with the same manufacturer when updating to a newer model?
That is really player dependent. Recommend trying 3-4 heads to compare the differences may as well compare different manufacturers and work with a club fitter to compare differences in the models.
I watch alot of really good pros on youtube, and Thomas is the only one who gets these absurd smash factors of like 1.48+ with a 7i. I have watched the 1.5 Smash Factor vid where he explained some of the delivery numbers, but still don't understand how. Is there a trackman setting enabled i.e premium ball adjustment while already using a premium ball or something?
Thanks for watching our videos. This is Thomas. That video you watched does explain the dynamic loft, attack angle and spin loft differences. It is partly to do with game improvement irons with stronger lofts and partly my compression. I recently filmed a video explaining how to compress the ball like me that will be coming soon. Trackman setting are on premium ball no adjustments. Numbers are accurate it's just my golf swing characterisitcs. Apreciate the comments and can honestly say nothing has been modified or jacked up to increase that smash factor
@@2ndswing Can't wait to see that video! I have same swing speed, same launch angle, same loft on the club, etc, and 15-20mph less ball speed. Last question - What ball did you use for the test?
Which set would you suggest for a player with a 80-82 mph swing speed with a 7 iron?
I would need a little more info but can say that the Apex 21 will be a little more distance playders iron while the DCB will have more fogiveness and clsoe to a game improvement iron but forged!
@@2ndswing just looking a recommendation....maybe a mixed set?
4500 spin on a 7 iron is a bit of a worry.
I have a 5 to pw set coming and had the same thought. It has a lower loft so less spin. This would give similar distance to older 6 irons. A guy could just hit an 8 iron from this set to match to match your old 7 irons distance and spin.
Begs the question, is there any point to the Maverick irons?
Good question. Mavrik irons are still more game improvement and forgiving. Also price point the Mavrik irons are less as they are not forged. Depends on a golfers skill level and price point.
@@2ndswing Yeah, I figured the price, but more the performance difference. Seem to have a lot of the same attributes
GREAT ADD FOR CALLAWAY. Come on really? He can hit any iron good, does not matter the brand. Would be sooooo much more valuable if you had a mid-handicap player hitting the DCB’s. His results are useless to a majority of golfers. What percentage of golfers can hit a 7 iron 196, maybe less than 10%.
Thanks for watching. We are currently working on adding talent to the channel, specifically golfers with slower swing speeds or those that need more forgiveness than Thomas. We understand that the majority of golfers don't swing as well as Thomas and will closely relate. Thomas's swing consistency helps explain differences easily but stay tuned!
I call BS on 196 yrd 7 iron One it's not really a 7 iron All they do is Stamp a 7 on 6 iron check he specs out on the lofts of the clubs These clubs are great clubs BUT Also with a 88mph golf swing He is not going to hit that 7 iron 1996 I am a scratch golfer i have an 87 mph golf swing I hit the Titleist AP3 7 iron with same specs at the apex 21 and i hit it in the summer time 145 on the fly That's hit perfectly There in the market to Sale clubs I do like the Callaway apex 21 forged but i call BS on his 196 7 iron
@@2ndswing I'm one of those golfers with slower swing speeds and those that need more forgiveness - but I've never considered that as "talent" ;)
@@alanhaymon6166 'He is not going to hit that 7 iron 1996 ' Wow, that's some distance!
@@2ndswing where are you located ? I would like too be the mid handicap capper my speed is 81 club head speed and I make great contact
Where are the heads manufactured?
Definitely not usa
Maybe Indonesia or China
Mexico
Hi, can you pls do comparison between Callaway Apex 21 DCB vs Titleist TS300. Thanks from Sydney
Thanks for the suggestion. That would be a good comparison - Thomas
I have the Apex CF19 and they're the worst irons I've ever had. They're very fast off the middle but anything off center drops distance very fast and sends the ball in random directions with side spin. They had absolutely terrible dispersion. I'm not surprised that even you have a 10 yard difference in distance. It appears they still haven't fixed their dispersion.
I’ve got the CF 19s and they are great
Really? I have the same ones and while I get that from time to time, I haven't had the same experience. Off center usually keeps me near my target. I've had the occasional heater for sure but overall they've been mostly predictable and forgiving for me.
Everyone seems to like them but for some reason my blades are easier to hit than these. Maybe mine are broken or something.
Eric have you tried the apex pro 19 black dot? I went in to get fitted for the apex 19 but face was too hot for me. Fitter then gave me the pro dot and it was amazing. Different face tech. and lofts are weaker. Plus thinner with less offset. I am a 16 hcp but I do have a good iron game.
@@corylink3195 I didn't know about them. I was upset that the promised forgiveness was never there and I overreacted to the thin face irons and instead went out and got a set of Srixon z-forged blades. At that point I didn't trust anyone and I thought I would experiment for myself. I hit them much better and I'm down 5 strokes from when I had the Apex. I can play all of them except for the 5 iron which is the length of a 3 iron since I play +1inch. I'm now trying to find something in between the Apex and the blades at least for the longer irons. But I find it hard to trust reviews after being fit for the Apex that didn't work for me
Call Montgomery held the order of merit for 10 years plus with Calloway X series iron so it's ridiculous to categorize as handicap specific irons
It doesn't have "AI on the face". AI is a process of a computer doing a humans job presumably much faster, thoroughly and of course automatically. Hard to be credible when you incorrectly just regurgitate marketing messaging. Take 5 minutes to understand what is being said and what it means.
Thanks for watching Kurt!
These guys are boring
Thanks for watching!!
