Very slow getting to all the RUclips videos. Hope your year isi going well. Had to comment because I had a chuckle hearing the dubbed caboose horn. When you first mentioned using the caboose, I wondered whether you’d think about putting in a sound decoder and maybe the magnet on feet of a conductor figure to put on the caboose 😉
@@KenN.OXN.805 Hi Ken. If you are aware of conductors from my era, I have thought about doing that. They didn’t wear safety vests in 1980. I’ve just seen old-timers and modern figures. Hope you’re doing well. Stay safe!

Hi Thom, Wishing you and your family a Safe and Happy New Year. Here's a little bit of trivia for you Thom and you might already know this, but any N&W caboose that the road number begins with 500 is a former P&WV caboose. So far Bachmann has produced two of their Northeastern Style Cabooses with former P&WV numbers, one red and the other Herman Pevler Blue. What type of locomotive was the N&W using as their Chillicothe switcher? OK Thom, another nice interchange ops video, thank you for uploading the video. Cheers, Rich S.
@@RWSBaden Good morning, Rich. Happy New Year to you and your family. I didn’t know that the 500 was exclusive to the P&WV. I think they had 6 of those cabooses if memory serves me correctly. I decaled one in G scale and if I get to run a snow plow train this Sunday, you may see it. I don’t remember that much about the switcher except that it was an end cab. They had a bunch of Alco T6’s so it may have been one of them. My friend’s weren’t into trains and the internet didn’t exist so I couldn’t do much research. Enjoy the rest of the week and I’ll catch up with you again this Saturday. Stay safe!
Hi Thom@@thomplacier677, Sadly the railroads being 24/7/365 is not fun during the holidays. I was forced out to work yesterday and I'm forced out today. So for me, it's just another work week. I'm not 100% sure if it was an exclusive number assignment, but I do know the P&WV cabooses were put into N&W Class C19 and were given the road numbers 500825 to 500839. Which were originally P&WV cabooses 825 to 839. I look forward to and enjoy seeing you G scale layout as well. I like that G scale N&W Pevler Blue GP9 you operate on your garden railway and If I had room, I'd be temped to build a garden railway as well. Cheers, Rich S.
@ Sorry you have to work, Rich. We’re supposed to have a colder than normal January here. Cold and windy today. The forecast is 1-3” of snow on Sunday so I’m going to be ready for it. I painted and decaled that locomotive myself and tried to make it faded following a photograph of a SD9 on the internet. Easier to do that kind of stuff in G scale. Thanks for your comments. Don’t work too hard and stay safe!
Happy new year Thom. Nice video. When I heard the caboose horn I thought it was your phone. I didn't know cabooses had horns, but it makes sense that they would. part 2, I came across a video this morning talking about RMT O scale freight cars. They were not supper detailed, but they were scale sized. Most amazing part was asking price was $35 vs $100+ for the average RTR O scale car. Makes me wonder if other companies could do the same for N and HO.
@@jackheninger5471 Hi Jack. I’m not sure if every caboose was equipped with a whistle or only ones used in switching service. They ran off the brake line pressure so they had very low air flow and were high-pitched. I’ll have to look at those cars. If I did go to O scale, it would be a short line with 1 locomotive. In the UK, a lot of garden railroads are O scale, so I even entertained the idea of converting my garden railroad to O scale and have 1 scale inside and outside. I doubt if I will do that, though. I like the larger stuff outside. Happy New Year to you and your family. Stay safe!
Happy New Year to you and your family Thom! Was great to see the N&W caboose on the interchange run today! The weathering looks good and loved the caboose whistle. Question: the N&W delivered two empty gondolas and three tank cars. What are the destinations? I’m guessing some may be destined for another interchange run because can’t all be for Chillicothe or Oak Hill customers (?) Just curious what JMRI is doing here. Have a great day and stay safe! Scott
@@kahunatiki6498 Good morning and Happy New Year, Scott. Until I terminate these trains and build the Oak Hill and Douglas Avenue trains, I won’t know where these cars are going. First of all, the gondolas. I don’t do loads and empties on my railroad, which obviously only affects open-top cars. Pete says that it makes things more complicated in JMRI. I guess I need to have destinations or originating points to do that. Steel rods aren’t produced in the Placier yard so after leaving Union Spring, I would have to create a fictional steel mill somewhere for the car to go to and then a fictional train to get it from the steel mill back to the Placier Yard so JMRI could send the full car to Union Spring. At least that’s the way I understand it. That sounds like a lot of work and since 99% of the viewers don’t notice that stuff, I’ll just drop a load in whichever car gets sent to Union Spring. Obviously, the scrap yard isn’t a problem. Before you ask, it is possible to set up industry to industry moves on the railroad , which would make perfect sense for an empty gondola from Union Spring to be routed to Charrington Scrap. The problem with me allowing that is that a boxcar that I know is full of bricks could be routed to Wearever because JMRI doesn’t know that. It just shuffles boxcars around. So I choose to keep that option turned off. As my friend Pete explains to me ( I hope he reads this and corrects me if I’m wrong), JMRI tries to fill the yard and actually tries to keep the layout full. So even if I only need 1 tank car, JMRI will look at the car move counts and select cars to move to maintain balance. So I think 2 of those cars will just sit in the yard during this session and may get moved out on an interchange train at the end. That doesn’t bother me too much because I don’t model every industry in Chillicothe. It does make switching more difficult if the yard is always packed with cars though. For some reason, it didn’t seem to fill the yard up as much this time, but that is probably because I have longer cars in it. The last session had a bunch of shorter cars, so I think I had 26 cars and there are only 21 in it now. JMRI is not perfect, but I like it. I am not a computer guy and without Pete and Fran, I could not be where I’m at. Sorry for the lengthy answer. I’m just sitting on the couch drinking coffee with X-ray sleeping beside me. Trying to motivate myself to take a shower and walk the dogs, but it has turned colder and may rain/snow soon. Enjoy the rest of your week and stay safe!
