Between 1979 and 1982 , I was repairman on the Alco fleet of Cartier railways.I know well these orange and black babies! In 1981 , I was in a team who’s been doing some improving tasks on the M636 fleet : bigger capacity auxiliary generator , electrical cab heater, removing the big dynamic brake and traction motors fan and installation of electrical dynamic brake fan and smaller traction motor fan . No more need to rev up the engine to 8th notch in dynamic brake mode ( just 4th notch instead ) . Modify engine air filter . Engine oil pressure, turbo pressure, water temperature gauges cluster in the cab . Reducing maximum engine rpm 1100 to 1000 to reduce engine wear and oil consumption ( -10%) Electrically controlled engine water drain valve ( if water fall below 40 F ) . All that in the entire M636 fleet ( units #41 to 49 , 71,73 to 76 and 81 to 87 . Lot of memories !
I had a conversation with the DL's President a few weeks back. All 4 M636's that were purchased from the WNYP will be running at some point. M636 #41 which was leased to the WNYP from 2009 to 2016 has a FANUC electrical system and likely wont be used.
Quality local rail fanning.
Another great drone video of Scranton railroading.
I've always loved hearing the chortle sound of those prime movers. Excellent video AC.
