I am super excited about this and have preordered the entire consist, but I sincerely hope there are plans to paint the wheels on the locomotive full black. The unpainted axle ends and pilot wheels do not look good, especially on a $550 model. This is a great opportunity to update and build upon the MTH tooling.
Will there be a way to get the tender closer to the locomotive for layouts with large radii? Maybe I‘m spoiled from European models but it would look so much nicer
The 2015 to current whistle is however an original N&W J Hancock 3 chime whistle from when they had been built though. From, I want to say, either 600, 603 or 608. I can’t remember exactly which J the whistle had been from, but I do remember reading that it was from one of the scrapped ones.
Looks great! I do have one question/concern though, and that is will the stack talk be corrected? I noticed that the engine began chuffing only 2-3 times per revolution (when it should be 4) which is a big turnoff for me. I’m not trying to be too critiquing, as this is a preproduction model, and probably the best looking preproduction model I’ve ever seen, but this is something I really hope gets corrected.
This looks phenomenal, you guys did a great job bringing these ex-MTH models back and adding the extra awesome features with the bi-color marker lights and other new lighting, as well as improved sound that still has smoke, super awesome! A bit off topic, feel free to ignore, but I would absolutely love it if you guys could re-release the Fox Valley Hiawatha set at some point with this same treatment as the last run got canceled and they’re super hard to come by now. It’d also be great to offer multiple paint scheme variations with the passenger cars if you guys did do the Hiawatha. (specifically a 1939 based scheme or the 1948 scheme, as Fox Valley had the 1948 cars available for preorder but they never got released with said cancelation and in general Milwaukee Road cars in that scheme are practically non-existent in HO outside of brass, I think they’d be worth producing at some point)
They are not super hard to come by. I have seen multiple sets on eBay for the past few years as a complete set for around ,600-700$. You can wait for a re-runs, but we know that price will be around ,1K for the complete set.
It looks and sounds great, Drayton! I don't run steam (at least one that large) on my little 4×8 layout, but it's a cool locomotive and the passenger cars look great lit up!
Totally outstanding, N scale please. I have the Hiawatha steam that they made, still runs awesome. I think that this would be a great project for Fox Valley. Noone has made a really great running model of the class J NS Loco in N scale, I think it would sell very well.
My preorder is in! I know some others have mentioned it, but if you could explore a way to decrease the gap between the tender and cab, I think it would really make it stand out visually.
It's getting better everyday with the new technology DCC n Sound technology n i am an Ho scale fan n now i like the big scales like o gauge o scale n garden scale n the big ones you can ride on your property also.
ScaleTrains this one is a bit of an odd request, but for another steam loco I’d love to see you guys do the US Army S160s, I think I’ve only ever seen one other model but have always wanted one, my great uncle worked around them in WWII. Excited to see a steam release period, so thank you. Maybe some early diesels like some alco freight units too?
With Scale Trains doing a Norfolk and Western J Class, they have finally done their first steam locomotive in their catalog. And the add on N&W Powathan Arrow coaches make them their first passenger cars on their catalog as well
Fantastic looking and sounding model! Excellent price point given all of the features on the models including the passenger cars. On the DCC ready version without the decoder, what type of interface plug is on that model for future installation of a DCC decoder?
Preordered excursion 611 and an observation car, will try to get the other cars as I can afford. So excited for this set! I know there’s a lot of talk about this and other former MTH models coming back under the Fox Valley brand but is there any change of ScaleTrains doing a run of Fox Valley’s Hiawatha?
Hey so I have a question, in the video it says the set will be available in December this year but on the website it says the set will be available in February next year. Which one is the correct availability date? December or February?
I have one question regarding the set. Will I be able to turn off the smoke unit? I am just wondering since two steam engines I have I'm able to turn off the smoke unit
Been wondering which engine from the MTH HO line that Scaletrains acquired, would be re-released first. Already got the MTH version which is still the showpiece for visitors, so I’ve no need for this model……for now.
I pre-ordered the post 2015 611, with an 8-passenger car set (4 regular coaches, 1 compartment coach, 1 crew coach, 1 diner, and 1 observation coach). ... My wallet hates me more than ever... XD
The next streamlined steam train that ScaleTrains should release via Fox Valley Models in HO scale should be the Southern Pacific Daylight. Since Broadway Limited Imports released its own HO-scale models of the GS-4, including 4449, in Daylight colors earlier this year and that might just be the best depiction yet of the GS-4 in HO-scale, maybe it will just have to be the Daylight cars with modified tooling, but who knows?
At the recent train show in Maine I talked to some of the folks at the scaletrains booth and one of the steam engines they planned on releasing is a GS-4. They said in 9 months or so
I'm gonna pre order the dcc ready version. I've had 2 locomotives that have had loksound and the decoders have burned up. But don't have a issue with TCS or sountraxx
Can’t wait for those cars! I also preordered the SoR 611 with sound, very skeptical of the sound as that whistle sounded like it was crying for help and chuffs didn’t impress. I’m hoping if I want to I can swap it for a decoder more to my liking if I feel I want to.
Keep in mind the soundfile is still a first build as well. Chuffs sound identical to what I've heard out of the real 611 working in person, whistle is very smooth. Hearing this engine run outside of video compression is something we can't fully convey, but it's impressive when running. -Logan
@@Scaletrains I’ll do my best and give this decoder a shot. However the rest of my collection is slowly getting equipped with Soundtraxx decoders, about 80%-90% of my running collection has them, as those are my preference. I tend to order the DCC ready versions to avoid having a decoder I won’t use. Would I be able to swap them comfortably if wanted? I know I’ll lose the smoke, I won’t mind honestly as I’d be happier without it, and I’ll only have one class light color. Will I atleast have headlight and cab light with a T2 vs Loksound?
That's a beautiful train and all... really, great work. I (and every other model rail roader I know) would much rather wish you guys would focus your efforts more on Amazon containers, along with other containers. Don't know if you noticed or not but the very few Amazon containers that were on eBay sold, very quickly, for $200... (3 packs) Not sayin, just sayin.
Ok. So. It's not The Palaton Arrow. It's The Powhatan Arrow. Your sound is spot on. The drivers need to be solid black no bare metal around the drivers is looks like white walls and none of the J's or 611 today have white walks. I mean over all it's an ok set i.e. in the J and cars. I kinda thought you would do your own thing and make a outstanding separate model like museum quality and not use retooling from another company that was bought. Kind of disappointed in that. I don't see $530 in the J or $89 in the cars.
I sure would like to see the Lima "Super Power" Berkshires as well as the C&O Kanawha as you next steam models. I have the MTH "smoking whistle" version that has been a disaster electronically. Decoder, and whistle board failures galore. It is down again! MTH repaired, MTH Service Center repaired and I have repaired. Junk electronics!!!
Sound is great but appearance looks way off and toy like. Blackening the tires and pilot wheels and fixing that massive space between the engine and tender might help.
Keep in mind that the soundfile is in the initial stages, it will be dialed in before final production. The bass is great in person, no camera can quite do all of the sound nuances justice. Having spent some time around the real 611, I can safely say the sounds are close to what I've experienced over a few runs. -Logan
I found it humorous you censored yourself because you said the wrong date and put a little title card over your mouth with the correct date whenever you said the date.
After hearing that the J will feature 2015 sound features (the whistle on the 611 today is a stand-in whistle, not an actual J whistle), I believe I will now cancel my order. If other manufactures can do the correct "HOOTER" whistle, for the 50's J and the cars with skirts in the as delivered., why can't Scaletrains? I don't want a 2015 J!
J’s never had hooter whistles. The current 611 whistle is off a J and actually sounds closer to as built. The original 611 whistle she wore in the 80’s had a much raspier sound but that was the effect of a lot of steam cut wear to the whistle.
The quality does not look up to ScaleTrains standards. It looks cheap and 'toy-like'. For the price you asking for a non-retooled model.... hard meh and pass.
Had to order the entire thing. Well done!
Thanks for explaining where MTH fits into the line up
Looks and sounds Amazing! Passenger cars look just as good! Congrats Scale Trains with many more to come!
I have two of the locos on pre order and 5 passenger cars, I can’t wait for them to come in December!
Just did a huge preorder, can’t wait for December!
Last N&W steam was May 1960 for the record. These look pretty well done. Would love to see the unshrouded J in the future

This is absolutely phenomenal!! The perfect icon for the first steam release and a full matching train, can’t beat that!
Ive ordered the 611 and all of the passenger cars. Looking forward to it!
Will there be a way to get the tender closer to the locomotive for layouts with large radii?
Maybe I‘m spoiled from European models but it would look so much nicer
Anyway on fixing the gap between the tender and locomotive? That gap is crazy. I pre ordered the model. But i do hope gap will be addressed.
Engine is still a preproduction, so we can explore ways to help the gap. -Logan
Already preordered my 611, can’t wait
I only wish the locomotive had firebox flicker and ground lighting. I pre-ordered 611. Really hoping for the Lima Berkshires from you guys.
Is it possible to get a seamless connection between the passenger cars? Looks like there is a few millimetres of space?
In the future will there be any production of the N&W auxiliary tender
The 2015 to current whistle is however an original N&W J Hancock 3 chime whistle from when they had been built though. From, I want to say, either 600, 603 or 608. I can’t remember exactly which J the whistle had been from, but I do remember reading that it was from one of the scrapped ones.
So all the mth moldings? Does that mean we'll get a triplex?

I only have one request. PAINT THE PILOT TRUCK! The shiny unpainted wheels on the pilot truck look awful!
Most modern HO scale models have their front pilot trucks that way. BLI has been doing it ever since
Hey, here's an idea, don't forget that these are pre-production
Just paint it yourself. It's super simple

Will yall be producing the n scale fox valley models H30 3 bay hoppers anytime soon?
Does this mean that sometime in the future you might produce the N scale Milwaukee Hudsons that Fox valley model originally did?
