✅ About jlwii2000:
When I started my channel I did not choose a catchy name because I did not think that I would be a major model railroading video source one day, so I apologize for the strange name. My channel has a variety of info about Model Railroading in many scales, primarily HO scale. I try to respond to everyone's questions to help them along with their journey. Overall, I hope my relaxed yet descriptive approach to modeling will assist those new and old in this great hobby. - James

Thanks for coming by to see our first steam locomotive, James! We look forward to your upcoming review of the production samples this December.
Please work on n scale steam locos!!! They are severely underrepresented in N scale!
Definitely pre-ordering this beauty!
Where is the decoder plug located in this model and how non ESU DCC ready is the model? I understand I won’t have changing color lights, but I’d like to know just how friendly it is to other brands.
@Scaletrains Are the Aux water tenders planned?? Thanks!!! -Joshua Smith
Am interested in twin beam light with no spirit lettering, will this version be available?
Will you guys re release the Hiawatha
I sent scaletrains an email a while back (well before J class announcement) inquiring about the Nickel Plate Berkshires since I know they bought the tooling for them from MTH and the sales representative said that at the time they were currently working on the J class and that the Berkshires would likely be their second or third steam project after they announced the J class.
Better sound than the MTH, however, I hope you can couple the tender closer. This is great for anyone who doesn't have the MTH version. Glad to see it. I'm happy with my MTH though!
I figure the locomotive has an adjustable drawbar like alot of other manufacturers have with their steam locomotives. They do this so the locomotive can negotiate tighter radius curves.
Hi James,
Just a thought here, but that coupler space between the passenger railcars needs to be improved. There is too much or the diaphragms needs adjusted.
The Powhatan passenger car consist looks awesome! It will be on my train-show wish list for sure.
Will the gap between the locomotive and tender be adjustable at all?

Disappointed with the gap between tender and loco. You could drive a train through that gap
They’re using the old MTH tooling, unless they used a basic bar and pin drawbar with wires this is what we got.
I figure the drawbar is adjustable like other companies do with their models. Plus this being the first operating sample, adjustments will be made before they arrive at their headquarters.
@@James-Railyard Yeah, I understand they are using the old MTH tooling, I was just hoping this would be one of the things that saw a revision. I don't really understand the hate for a harness and adjustable drawbar. Is it as elegant? No, but it works, and lets you couple closer, or further, with the option to set it based on your layout
Not quite my style but I am hoping this means the Hiawatha is a possibility in the next couple of years!!!
Now we also have to hope that ScaleTrains will re-release the former MTH HO-scale Southern Pacific Daylight cars!
🤤 I...must...get...one. That is the most realistic 611 sounds I ever heard from a 611 model.
IM DEFINITELY BUYING ONE WITH SOUND THESE SOUND ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!!! SO PROTOTYPICALLY ACCURATE!!!!!!!!!
It’s good to see the authentic double side rods like the prototype.
Awsome engine, love 611!! I know the engineer on it, and he let me and my dad run it at the NCTM. Great model.
Impressive connection with the loco and tender connection. And as I have the Bachmann J (excursion version), I have to say that the sound absolutely blows away my loco (Bach’s steamboat whistle is so mushy). And it will be nice for some to finally have some well detailed cars.
The whistle doesn't sound right. Did you guys record 611 while it was at Strasburg or after? During her time at Strasburg, she was given a different whistle than her own. Her original was placed back on her after she left last year. If you look "Shenandoah Steam Spectacle", you can hear the difference.
It was ESU that recorded the sounds so I’d email them for specifics on sound.
Sounds like a nice model, BUT let's think a bit outside the box! Thousands of steam locos over the years and we still see N&W 611 or more Big Boys, etc. There are a LOT of roads and engines that haven't been done.
N scale is the future of the hobby! MORE NSCALE !!!
Nice to see the excellent MTH steam locomotive tooling finally getting the electronics it deserves. The 611’s not really my thing, but if you guys do a rerun of the Mohawks I’ll be ordering…
I lived in Manassas for a few years and the Class J steam locomotive ran some fan trips through the area. But what I'm really excited about is the GP40 announced at the same time, D&RGW of course.
Drivers need blacked out...hopefully they fix that. This is present on the bli models
Y’know I was really hoping they’d paint the wheels entirely too but I’m not surprised they didn’t. Don’t fully understand why it’s inconsistent across BLI’s models too.
MIND THE GAP, Please.. Looks promising, but Please reduce the gap between the locomotive and tender. it would be nice if it were adjustable, or if both draft gear shanks were on a cam, so that when the engine goes straight down the track, the tender and engine are very close together. As it is, the great distance between the two is pretty unrealistic. SXT does an awesome job, so you guys have a rep to protect! =)
I agree. The gap issues are such challenging technical problems for manufacturers, it seems.
That thing sounds amazing. I need!
It's certainly a great looking model and it sounds awesome. However, is there any way to bring the tender closer to the locomotive?
Awesome! Can you guys share any details about inside the passenger cars? Is it single piece molded plastic or will they be detailed and colored appropriately. Couldn’t tell in the video
awesome, awesome, awesome,...my granddad work on the J's in the Roanoke shop... and my dad work for N & W, and on the dining car. Going to great to get these.
Simply awesome. We need UP units now!!
Just put my preorder in
Same here
Love it! Can't wait to get my 611 and the passenger cars.
Should it not have the MTH smoke unit? Are they working one out from scratch?
This looks and sounds amazing!!!! I can't wait to order one for myself!!!
Okay but what about a ScaleTrains retooling of the FVM GP60? :D
I hope it will make it in my 24” curves on my layout! But I can’t wait for it to run on my Tennessee River Union RR
This is awesome and makes me excited and hopeful that they will one day make a Yellowstone
I enjoyed the review, even though I have the HO scale brass version from Key Imports. The sound features are very nice. I hope, someday I'll find a sound system like the one in this ScaleTrains model for my brass version of the 611. Once again, nice review.
Whoa. That's gonna be an awesome model
Just 1 more for j lovers
I would have thought, Scale Trains might have at least been able to bring to the US market, European style coaches with "M" pocket close fitting couplers. These would have been made in the same factory as the European coaches that run well with touching dioramas.
I gotta say, that one of the best sounding steam locomotives I've heard yet! I don't run hardly any steam personally, but dang, that thing is nice! I'm guessing the drawbar between the locomotive and tender is adjustable? Just asking as others have commented on the gap between the locomotive and tender.
Please keep doing steam!! And definitely N&W steam
Very beautiful engine, great sound can't wait to be able to order it
beautiful model, though i think its pretty clear its just a better version of the MTH j class, i may pick one up eventually as i do want to have a high end j at some point with loksound
Well to reach Scale Trains Museum Quality I've told them we need to use the vape pen type of deal which could generate a bunch of steam.
A small appreatus with several brass tubes could carry the steam.😂🎉
Sombody will do it one day. I guarantee it.
YES!!! MTH VERSION WITH ESU LOKSOUND V.5
Now we need this in N scale too. Bachmann is the only one that makes this locomotive, and no one makes the cars and this is really sad. Scale Trains PLEASE make this all in N too!
Do you have any plans on releasing this model in N scale? HO is way too bulky. Long live larger dioramas and smaller locos in N scale!!! ❤🎉
Is the spacing between the loco and tender adjustable? Can you couple them closer if desired?
The sounds were not all recorded from 611, most of those sounds are ESUs generic steam sounds.
hello James & it's is Randy and i like yours video is cool & Thanks James & Friends Randy
They pulled a lionel and have twin speakers. Now improve the distance between the engine and tender.
But... wires between the tender and locomotive look good because hoses?
Anyone know or remember the company that made magnetic air and MU lines? Those could be fun to install.
WOW...NICE‼️👍👍
Hey James, what is the best DCC controller to get when first starting in the hobby that is also wallet friendly?
I'm a N-Scaler, big fan of the 611. Desperately searched for the Powhathan cars. Nothing satisfactoy was ever produced. So bear with us too.
I am so purchasing that locomotive
I wonder if they will add a firebox light
Only thing I wish was that you guys had added a flickering firebox and ash pan glow
You rarely see that on the real 611
It looks nice but for me it doesn’t make sense why they are doing the class j. Multiple companies have made them before so it isn’t really anything new. Plus it is a 4-8-4 northern, models of northerns are super common
Small SP engines like moguls, pacifics and others have never been made in plastic and thus a huge open market area
Seconding this! So many small locos get neglected and are only available in brass for thousands.
Does it come just DC but does it have stay alive thing an can smoke turn
When the sound is on, why does it sound like there’s a diesel generator?
Does the engine come with the classic j class whistle, or is it just the one 611 had from 2015-2022?
I believe that’s the 2015-current whistle on it, unless they changed the whistle recently.
@@James-Railyard Ik that’s the 2015 whistle, but I was wondering if they have the other one as an option, like how the BLI engines have 2, sometimes 3 whistles
@@SteamPowerPA i understand now, my bad.
So basically we are getting just the double speakers... who could they not use the mth smoke unit???
10x better than the Bachmann in looks. And R18.
It must be an ex-MTH product right?
Yes
I was wondering the same!
Dear God, will they offer the water tender as well?
If not you could always get a Bachmann or BLI auxiliary tender
Ok couple things. 1st you need "Sprit of Roanoke" on the side of the cab. 2nd 611 doesn't have white walls.
They had spirit of Roanoke on the model, and the wheel edges are metal not white. Thanks for watching!
This Loco has been done adnauseam. So demand will be LOW. The whitewall effect of bare metal on the drivers edges needs to be fixed. And for the love of all that is holy, paint the pony wheels black!
Yup the wheels need completely blacked out
@@normandedgerly8445 The Big Boy is done all the time and that is because demand is high for them, which is why companies keep re-releasing them. Same with 611. Same can be said for all the GEVO's and SD/GP's released every year too do you complain about those as well?
@@jlwii2000I noticed it now. It was just really small. I know it's their first and none have been made, but disappointed. Expected more from Scale Trains. Sound is spot on. Looks not so much same for the passenger cars. I just expect more from them. And as of now I don't see $530 in the J and $85 for the cars. To each their own I guess.
There goes several paychecks.... lol

Better than Bachman’s J.
Duh
Different price points but yes.
Bachmann has never corrected the front of their skyline casing. It still looks offf.
611 i think is a oil burner with a water car.
No. She still burns coal

Oh god, ScaleTrains and 611 fanboys all coming together for a single unit… I don’t wanna live on this planet anymore.
Are you 12?
And this is a problem, why, exactly?
Asking for a friend.
