For us, Starlink has been a game changer as we live off grid, 40 minutes from the nearest road, in Northern California and works seamlessly but we are not traveling around with it -definitely not to Canada or Mexico for that matter. We LOVE! having internet again. 🙏🏼🕊❣️🕊🙏🏼
That's awesome! There is definitely a place for it and it will keep getting better and better as each new model comes out. We were sad it didn't work out for our case, but maybe one day 🤞
Same here. We live in a rural mountain HOA in central California. Before we got Starlink our only internet option was LTE at a very slow speed limited to 15Gb a month. Many of our neighbors also got it for the same reason. For making real internet available to people that didn’t have it, the price is a bargain
It's been WIDELY publicized that the capability to go mobile with it is coming in 2022. It's a great service and works extremely well at my home address, which is all they assure you it will do.
@@EA-tc6kb LOL they lost a small fraction...and they weren't even at their final altitude. Alllll the other ones are fine and service is still great. I'm sure they will just abandon it all. Thank goodness you're not in charge of anything.
@@EA-tc6kb please do! They said that cost them 10 million. With 150,000 (and growing monthly) users already paying, that generates 14.5 million a month. Minor set back at best. See you around!
Northern California near the Oregon border, went through Hughes for a few years, barely acceptable at the time but the only option at that time, a new cell tower went up and opened up the AT&T cellular hotspot. Speed at 40-50 Mb was acceptable considering data caps at 100G, I had two of them to double my data cap. Just got my Starlink gen 2 (square dish) set it on the porch and hooked it up. The app showed that I was sitting in a undesirable location and suggested that I move it. It was dark and cold out, so I left it and went inside. In the undesirable location I am getting 100-200Mb and love it goodbye at&t.
Nice! Yeah, Starlink is a game changer for sure, but I'm really hoping they can figure out a) how to make it work on the move, and b) how to use the same hardware in multiple countries -- or at least be able to use the same unit in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
The tripod mount is not really meant for roof installs. The roof mount kits come with a nice little backpack that you can put the dish in while you climb the ladder.
So this is what I have been commenting about on other sites. The Starlink website does not make it easy to find this information. While the product did in fact work, the rules surrounding it are the failure of the governments, not the product. I feel for you, that you went thru this to find this out. Nothing burns me more than "I could have prevented this waist of time and energy if some had said something" type of routine. You figure that a program such as this which is funded by a company that can afford to employ someone to put all this extra information on their site and employ someone to beta test would do so. I appreciate the information you have provided. Thank you.
Thankfully this has been _mostly_ sorted out now. You can use a receiver purchased in Canada, the US, or Mexico in all three countries if you have Portability enabled -- but only up to 2 months maximum. After that, it's still unclear whether you can "move" your address and what the procedure is. We're thinking they will have this sorted out before this winter's snowbirding season.
I don’t know how it is where you live but I’m about 2 hours from the Maine border here in New Brunswick. You can order and get it shipped to a P.O. Box on the America side and go pick it up. If I were in your shoes that’s what I would do for boondocking. Good luck!
That's a great idea we considered, but didn't like the idea of needing two separate dishes and paying two separate monthly bills to have both Canadian and US coverage. We're hopeful that they'll come up with a cross-border mobile Starlink solution eventually.
If you have a friend/family in the states, you can tell them to order starlink for you and registry under their address. Since you can pay month to month you can shut off services after you come back to canada
Verizon LTE home service has been game changer for us - we live in rural area, and got $50/month + $0 equipment cost Home internet service with no data cap. Rock solid 50+ Mbps in all weather + great customer service from Verizon! Internet gateway arrived only 2 days after "order" ($0 down), and can't recommend it highly enough!
Wow that's pretty good! Yeah, nice that there are multiple decent options for rural access now in more and more places. Competition is always a good thing!
Don't listen to the haters. This was very informative for anyone considering your exact usage case like I am. Good info here for anyone who wants to have internet in Canada and in US for their RV
The accounts are generally geo-locked to a certain location, and I think some of it actually has something to do with the way the dish is constructed. So until/unless they change the way the satellites communicate with each other, you're probably stuck with a particular location, and mobile usage is going to be out of the question, at least for now.
Yeah, you can change your address as long as there is capacity in the new cell. But truly mobile service is a ways off. And you are locked to the country that you purchased in.
Yeah certain areas take a long time to receive one, presumably because the pod is already full and they need to launch more satellites to accommodate the demand. We ordered a US one as soon as we realized the Canadian one wouldn't work and have yet to receive it.
Wow, that's disappointing. I'm planning on getting it this Spring, amazing how quick it is compared to the directv/Hughes net satellite internet, just a few years ago it cost a fortune to get internet in rural areas. I'm really excited to see where this technology goes. I don't know if you remember my directv satellite dish tripod setup, lol, but its really nice to see that they have an automated solution for setting up and aiming the dish.
Yeah, the automatic aiming and following is pretty cool to watch! The technology is really coming along but not perfect yet, of course. The latest news is that delays with their rocket technology are really slowing down their expansion rate. They apparently need a lot more satellites up there.
If your using it at home run the cable thru the slide seal i do it all the time with dish network. Sucks we cant travel with them if i ever get mine. i ordered last feb still nothing now saying mid 2022
Hey, that's a great idea about running the wire through the slide seal! If we ever get a mobile version that's exactly what I'll do! :) Here's hoping Starlink can speed up deployments before then. Best of luck!
This may have been brought up already but why not purchase it and ship it to someone in the US while using their location. If that's your plan to travel there anyways, seems like it would be a solution. While you may also want to travel in Canada, while expensive, it may also be beneficial to have a Canadian one as well. Sure you're paying double, the pros greatly outweigh the cons with high speed satellite internet wherever you want.
Yeah that's a good idea and we did consider it but given the wait time for the US one, and the fact that we really needed it most for the US trip we're now on, it just didn't work out. We don't typically do really long trips in Canada so it didn't make sense to keep that one. We're just going to hold out for the proper mobile version and hope it can hop between the US and Canada.
Thanks, and good tip! I (Jay) am always working towards tighter edits. Some of our newer videos have quicker cuts. Ironically it just takes a lot longer to create a shorter video! :)
Yes! And we actually have a new (rectangular) dish now. You can use a Canadian dish in the US and Mexico now, except there is a 2-month limit for International travel. Be sure to check out our updated video for more info: bit.ly/starlink-rv
Tip, pointing out your primary geographic location first then pointing out you want to roam the planet as well I could have been utilizing my time on something else. It appears the system works fine as intended.
Being able to roam from Canada to the United States actually seems like a pretty reasonable request. We can do it with our cellphone Internet, satellite TV, and other satellite communications providers. I suspect it's just a matter of time before Starlink will manage to jump through the regulatory hoops necessary to cross-license their transmitter/receivers in both countries.
Since this video has been made Starlink has released a roaming feature on the residential plan, an RV option, and the new marine option. Check out our other Starlink videos where we get a new one and try it out again. We're happy they now offer those features.
There have been many rumors (and Elon Musk tweets) about a portable, RV-friendly version of Starlink. I think it will happen for sure, but it's anyone's guess how long it will take. They seem to be focusing on "pro" and commercial users (including aircraft) right now to beef up their revenue stream.
Being a Canadian myself, I wonder something, even though the app says it won't allow you to change locations to a Us location while still in Canada, what if you were in the States with your Canadian dish then try and change locations and see if it will work... If it won't work it's pretty stupid, considering our cellphone providers have agreements in the United States to allow our phones to work there and vice versa.
I mean, it would be a good experiment to try, but all the research I did seemed to point towards the devices being hard locked to their country of origin. I agree it's dumb! But I suspect Internet providers in both countries stand to lose a lot of profits once Starlink becomes more mainstream, so they benefit from any type of regulation to make things harder for SpaceX.
I realize this is an older video, but just to update anyone who stumbles across it. The fact that the dishes were geo-locked to begin with was actually well documented by spacex. That is already beginning to change, though they still tell you that if you take your dish out of your registered home area then you may or may not be able to get service. Eventually the plan is to allow travel us, like campers, etc., but the infrastructure has to be fleshed out more before that idea becomes universal.
It's actually been possible to move locations for quite a while. We watched a number of videos of RVers and Vanlifers using Starlink on the road and simply updating their location every time they arrived. The fact that caught us off guard was that receivers sold in Canada cannot be used in the United States. As it turns out that isn't a technical limitation, it's solely a regulatory issue, since they are approved by two different government bodies. SpaceX/Starlink needs to get a single device approved by both agencies, and unfortunately that hasn't happened yet.
@@HomeARoam I can see how the Canada is this is weird. Makes you wonder. I have several friends who have traveled with their dish and what they found was service isn’t guaranteed in the new area when you change locations based on how many users are already in that service region. That part at least becomes less important as the constellation grows. The international border thing is interesting.
@@HomeARoam It seems you have the wrong data. Look up TucksTruck (mark) he travels all over with his starlink and he used it in Canada and the U.S. with no problem. And he luckily now even has roaming enabled so no need to change home address. Not sure how roaming works from country to country, but it definitely works in both countries, he also has version 1.
everything i read or watched said its for a set location not mobile service like rv use. when moved it needs to be set for where mounted and its not designed for on top of rv
Hi, i have a question, and how do your fellow RVers do it? do they have to be changing the location manually to where they are physically located for Starlink to work? what if they are in a remote desert location with not a very specific location address
Great question Leo! Yes, if you're using it with an RV, you need to use Starlink's online address switching tool every time you move. And there is no guarantee there will be an open "slot" at your destination. So you're rolling the dice a bit there. For addresses in the middle of nowhere, there's something called a "plus code". If you go to Google Maps and click a random location with no official address, it will pop up a lat-lon coordinate on the bottom. If you click those numbers, it will bring up an info box on the side with an icon that says, "Copy plus code". You can then enter that code into the Starlink interface to update your location.
The address change is for billing and "if you do some shady things with the Internet it ties to a physical location. Dont change it, I have friends in Florida who travel the entire State from the Panhandle to the Keys and just go through the setup again. One way to check is use address of the general area your going to be visiting on the Sign up Page and see if service is available. This gives an heads up on if there is enough coverage in that area....
No, this was filmed just a few months ago. Starink just moves fast! The new v2 square receivers are much smaller and lighter, which makes them much more suitable to move around. The new ones are shipping in the States, but I'm not sure if they're in Canada yet. It's amazing how the technology keeps on improving so quickly. Here's hoping for cellphone-based Starlink Internet soon! :)
Since the unit can still technically work anywhere in the world, I can already see people out there doing an unauthorized work around, where they get the exact coordinates of wherever they are to manually adjust the positioning of their unit, and override the territory restrictions.
I'm sure such a hack would be possible, but I think you'd need to somehow build your own custom firmware for the unit, which is not an easy task! :) Here's hoping Starlink becomes truly international soon.
I think it would be possible to rent out a Starlink received, but you'd have to check there terms of service. Some Internet providers have a clause against reselling their service.
So really, the only problem is using it on the road, not exclusively for home use only. I live in a rural area and I'm wanting to get one for my house. Crazy how a satellite dish can transmit an internet signal to a satellite thousands of miles into space better than the provider I have, transmitting a signal to a cell tower just five miles down the road.
Yeah, it's great for home/stationary use. And you make a good point! Pretty amazing, although I guess they have line of sight to the satellite, whereas there might be a lot of obstacles between you and the cell tower. Also, I suspect Starlink isn't meant to scale to have _everyone_ using it like the cellular network.
This is nothing like my Starlink. My dish is rectangular and weighs 9lbs. I live in the high desert of Oregon, a 100 miles from Bend, OR. I brought the cable in through a previous Satellite dish access (widened the hole) and plugged it into the router. Then I plugged the router in and just like that I had high speed Internet. No switches or usb plug-ins. So simple. I bolted the four legged dish stand to my deck rail and my app says I don’t have any obstructions. It stays tilted to the north.
Yeah, we were shipped the v1 "dishy" receiver. Not long after that they started shipping the v2 "bricky" receivers, which as you mentioned are much smaller and lighter. I'm sure the upcoming generations will continue to get smaller, lighter, and more powerful.
Definitely realize the wait time, and considered holding on to it except: 1) The new version was released that was much smaller and lighter, and 2) We really only need it for traveling, so we thought since it didn't suit our purpose, it would be better to send it back for someone else to enjoy. 😀
A Little OT and obviously, it won't work for everyone but I've had the T-Mobile 5G home "hotspot" for about 4 months now..... consistent 200+ Mbps down / 25+ Mbps up (300+ Mbps from time to time)..... no outages (yet)....I can now really get the full use of my big 4K TV while streaming.... 50 Bucks total each month.....Excellent value compared to my former cable-based service provider !!!
Yeah, $50 is a great price for that level of service. We've done really well just with 4G LTE service down here. There have only been a few times when it's failed us -- mostly when we're somewhere rural and there are a lot of other people around competing for bandwidth. That said, if and when Starlink can provide a truly mobile service that crosses borders, I think that will be worth the $100/month.
It might be. Let's just hope they can figure out how to get it approved for use in multiple countries. I'd be happy if it could at least be taken from Canada to the United States and Mexico.
Interesting! Are you sure they didn't have a US unit? If you're signed up for a Canadian account, the "change location" interface won't let you choose a location in the States.
How's it going eh. Apparently you didn't think this out. First you should have bought the USA version of Starlink. You could have set up a US post office box or a UPS postal address in the state you are visiting. Have the unit shipped there. Then run the US version. Sometimes you have to think out of the box if you want to get something done.
In the end, Starlink finally fixed their weird broken policy and it worked out well for us since we were then able to buy the new, updated dish that was smaller and lighter. So overall, a happy ending to the story. 😁
I don't see how people can go camping in the boondocks and need to be connected to something like a cell phone or internet. Personally I like to leave all that garbage at home and enjoy nature without technology. I mean what did we do in the 60's when we when camping , we enjoyed the outdoors and being away from work or a damn phone! Heck the last time I went camping with friends we were sitting around the camp fire and everyone was texting on the phones. They should have stayed home!
I agree about enjoying nature and the company around you, and not letting tech distract from it. But we also like to keep in touch with family and friends far away. So there's a balance to be struck.
I live full time in my RV. When in the US I am out in the middle of the desert for most of 6 months per year. Do you feel that folks like me should have no internet for 6 months of the year? Some of us actually live out here in the desert, and look forward to having reliable internet, as I'm sure you do at your home. My internet is often terrible, and I spend more time waiting for pages to load than most of us would like.
Yes, we've heard the roaming is enabled for most Starlink subscribers now. Very exciting to us, but we still haven't confirmed for sure that roaming is enabled for all Canadian receivers. Also, it seems that the new V2 rectangular dish is only available in the United States right now. We'd prefer that model since it's smaller and lighter. That model is probably a bit easier to roam with :)
I sincerely feel bureaucracy creates more problems than it solves. I know a lot of people feel this is a headache, just imagine how much of a headache it is for the guy who envisioned worldwide internet service, and the bureaucracy that guy has to deal with at every level and step of the way trying to bring the world together.
Yeah, it's interesting how bureaucracies don't solve the problems you need them to solve but do manage to create the problems with implementing the solutions you have found that you don't need them to get invoved in.
@@alanmcrae8594 Lol! That is so true! Its like they create problems just to have something solve to insure they have a job that was never needed in the first place.
Yeah, I can imagine Elon getting pretty frustrated when he figures out how to do something previously considered impossible, tries to move the human race forward, and meanwhile gets buried in a huge pile of red tape! Thankfully he has the money to hire people to fill out all the forms and jump through all the hoops, but it still takes time!
@@HomeARoam Elon Musk is taking advantage of uneducated folks to build up his portfolio. Phased array antennas are nothing new, Low orbit satellites are nothing new. What is new is the added congestion in space which has already caused multiple satellites to have to be maneuvered to avoid collision. Starlink requires 40 thousand satellites to be replaced every 5 years, this makes it a literal impossibility in terms of finances and practicality. It's literally vaporware.
Complaining about non-authorized use of a product is not fair to the product, but it is a frustrating limitation. So, blame Canada... blame Canada! Do you have friends in the States that will buy the dish and register it for you? Then you can just Venmo back the monthly payments?
Yeah, we have to admit we were caught pretty off guard about the geofencing. It would be great if we could somehow get a gen2 American dish for our trip, but there's a very long order queue, so it's unlikely we'll be able to get one in time. And besides that, it looks like it's been more difficult recently to change locations. Might be best to wait until they have Starships bringing up massive numbers of satellites at a time and capacity improves. Awesome technology coming down the pipeline, we just have to be patient :)
There are more issues. Each cutomer is associated with a downlink station. If you move around, they can't easily scale the downlink locations to variable demand. Also the NOC and TOC (network speak) you are assigned depend on your physical location, and these aren't dynamic either.
Exactly. I think Starlink engineers are working on solving these problems. Elon tweeted a while back that they are going to have a portable solution "in 2022". Here's hoping!
Hey Jay, thanks for giving us your feedback about it! We wanted to take it as well so I'm glad that you checked it out! Hopefully they will announce a mobile device soon, I think that it would be a game changer for RVers. Cheers!
There may be portability issues, BUT Starlink is the best choice for rural Canada. There is absolutely NO way for us to have an unlimited high-speed internet in rural Canada. The big three greedy corps have LTE coverage BUT with a CAP! and they cost almost the same as Starlink. Even though the initial equipment cost of Starlink is high, It is worth it. 200Mbps down link! Amazing! Certain WISP providers say they have coverage then the technician they send says no more connection is allowed on their hub! that's ridiculous. Don't bother with any of them... go with Starlink. Took only 6 days to arrive from California to Central Alberta.
So true, Starlink works really well for that case. And we actually have a rectangular dish with portability for our RV and that works really well too! You are now able to roam North America wide.
Jay, how come you were glowing green for a few seconds??? lol It was smart to try the Washington setting. At least you figured it out now and not later, eh?
Thank you for taking the time for us Canadians to find the best coverage in remote areas. We just ordered one for our cabin in northern Saskatchewan since my husband is still working from home. We are planning on travelling and working so internet is important and it needs to be reliable. I wonder if you buy one from Canada and one from the states and use the one for the area you are in? Something to look into for the future. Thank you for the heads up!
I think it will work great in your cabin. As for traveling with it, your mileage may vary! It would definitely be possible to order separate dishes for each country, but you will also need to pay for two separately monthly accounts then too.
Yeah I checked those out - unfortunately -after- we already received it. Really hope Starlink is able to remove the country geofencing soon so it becomes a truly worldwide solution.
seem like a false advertising to me, i remember promo saying "internet around the world". I definitely got a vibe that u can travel with that dish anywhere u wish and still get the internet... thank you for education will pass on that one
Looks like you could order a second dish by getting a US address and use the one in the US when you are in the US and disable the one in BC, and when in BC reactivate the one in BC and disable billing for the one in US
I'm not really a gamer anymore, so I really have no idea, but for some reason I thought modern gamers were looking for like sub-10ms pings. But I do know that people use Starlink for gaming.
Yeah it looks like I messed up those numbers. Consensus says that 30ms is A-OK for gaming. I do get about 9ms on our fiber to the door solution from Telus so I guess we're pretty damn spoiled here at home. My impression was that folks in countries like Japan and South Korea where gaming is really big had even better ping times.
@@HomeARoam I doubt you made this video for people in japan or Korea so why would their ping times in either country be relevant? No you just misspoke in your video, you even responded to a comment earlier how you have not gamed in years and don't know what ping time is needed for gaming
Yeah they don't really make it obvious, but it seems like all dishes are only licensed in the country they're sold and are geofenced by GPS to make sure you can't use them elsewhere. 😟
Why not just use it in the US without changing the address? I'd think the address isn't 'necessary' for dish operations. Unless it is needed for base stations. But really, would it be? It isn't like the dish communicates with a base station, the satellites do. So at most, you might get some more latency since it will forward your signal to a Canadian base station.
Unfortunately it only works in the "cell" in which it is currently registered. If you're more than about 30 miles or so outside that cell, it won't detect, transmit or receive. 😟
Yes, we've heard recently that roaming is working for Americans, but yet to confirm whether it's been enabled for Canadian dishes. If it seems like roaming is a thing for us, we'll be ordering up a new receiver!
Don't get the light to dark reference, but definitely looking forward to being able to use one dish to access all of North America. I'm sure that's coming down the pipeline.
They have starlink for RVs and campers now it's something new that just came out recently here and now we're paying $10 more for this new technology that they have now so yes you don't need to return your satellites you'll be able to purchase one for your camper now so you can't use your satellite in multiple certain multiple locations but now you can they have a special dish that you put on top of RVs or campers and I'm basically this is for that purpose I think it's Square something it's not the roundish it's squared you have to call and look into it cuz that's why I started customers are paying more money every month now cuz of this new satellite
Seems like Trudy and The Musker should be able to get this worked out... Also, seems like the RV industry should be working with StarLink to get it adopted industry-wide in North America.
Yeah, here's hoping! Using it in different locations is a bit of a hack right now, but I'm sure the long-term plan is to have it fully mobile. Already they are testing it on airplanes, and they move a lot faster than RVs! :)
Wait, you make a bad review for Satellite Internet when StarLink does not support mobile usage? It's clearly on they're website. I installed Direct TV for years and I know northerner's come to Florida and Direct TV doesn't allow it, but you can aim the dish and your receiver will work. Make alot of side money pointing dishes correctly. This review is seriously not a review more like you didnt read the fine print and went off others who are trail n error on there StarLink with mobile usage. It will work only if there are enough satellites to hit off of and clearly your geographical area does not. Thus the disclaimer you even shown on this. I plan on using my Starlink at local camp grounds to play video games, 4k Tv. Also your area for the Dish set up is wrong, its unstable and even a few millimeters of movement will cause serious down and up data loss. Pole mounted stable is key even with Hughes. Trying to point a dish on an RV moving back n fourth is truly a rookie setup and bound for issues. I watched this as I just paid the $499 thinking something was wrong and having 2nd thoughts. But this is just a buyer's remorse "Opps" didnt read or research my purchase and return for Clicks...
Hey there Awesome Mike, we did enough research to know that they don't officially support mobile usage, but also knew that many people were doing it successfully. We did not, however, do enough research to turn up the regulatory issues that prevent using a dish in a different country than when it was purchased. That's our bad for sure! This video is just to get the information out there and help others from making the same mistake. Starlink will work great as long as you never plan to move it to another country. This is a big concern for a lot of people that travel cross border on a regular basis.
Why not just buy one with US address? Sure you must have a friend or family in the states. May take months but I don't see anything new and better coming out for years. Even if mobile one came out then it can be sold starlink says or maybe used for home internet
Yeah, we had one on order but canceled it since we'll be back in Canada in 2 months and it wasn't going to ship before we returned. On top of that, we've had really good LTE signal just about everywhere, so we haven't really been lacking for Internet. We're hoping the mobile version will be ready for next Fall/Winter and it will work in both countries.
This is very sad and only proved what a bunch of b.s. are government bureaucracies... Of all nations in the world today I can't think of two closer than brothers than the U.S.A and Canada and yet these political monkies we pay taxes to and elect can' t get even something as simple as our communication links straight... While innovators like Elon Musk try to improve our way of life these bureaucrats keep making stupid rules to justify their useless positions and prove how foolish they really are. I appreciate this video for bringing to light this problem. As an American Citizen and those who are our brothers and sisters in Canada let us all write to our elected officials and demand a correction to fix this issue. If the U.S. and Canada can't work together for the Citizens of our two nations in something this simple than what good are they in government? Thank you I feel you on this matter.
Irony: Returning your dish just for them to allow roaming (most likely cross country boarders) less than 6 months later since you can now roam without changing your address.
An irony indeed! We did end up getting a new one recently and it turned out for the best, since we got a rectangular dish that's smaller and much lighter -- better for traveling.
@@HomeARoam Glad you were able to get a new one so quickly! Im a full time RV'er myself, and am considering switching over to Starlink - currently I am using T-Mobile on an unlimited grandfathered hotspot plan and it works rather well, but my ping could certainly be better.
Hi Jay and Mel! great info to know! I’m surprised how big and heavy it is too! So if we go to Canada we’d have the same issues I suppose! Guess we will wait until all of these issues get resolved because it sure would be nice to have! Thanks for the video!
It is only 15 pounds if you have the old round dish, and the new square dish 📡 is only 9 pounds. Time to do some exercise if either is too heavy. As for size, 23" diameter for the round and half that for the square dish and they are self aiming. The competitors wish they had something close the it.
Hmm... from day one (Feb '21) every communication I ever saw from Starlink indicated that the current iteration was NOT to be used in an international roaming configuration. In fact, they specifically stated that there was not official support for an account to hop-scotch all over the place, as this would affect availability for existing and future customers. I really don't think this is a limitation of the system... I think that you are just upset that the round peg that you purchased doesn't fit in a square hole.
From Elon Musk's tweet on Apr 15, 2021: "Yeah, should be fully mobile later this year, so you can move it anywhere or use it on an RV or truck in motion. We need a few more satellite launches to achieve compete coverage & some key software upgrades." - twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1382842277719003136
@@HomeARoam I don’t want to be that person that says Alan musk is a liar I just think that they’re still in that mindset of you know fake it till you make it. He’s done this with Tesla many times and still are at least a year or two years so behind on many things with Tesla that were supposedly supposed to happen that’s just how this goes I mean it does not seem like you can take this right now and really move it around it’s it’s just not how it works because you lose your satellite place if you do that at least the way that their network works right now so it’s unfortunate but yeah it’s it’s not meant to be mobile and what I find really weird is people are buying in areas that you could easily get 5G or even Comcast and trust me I’ve got 5G from verizon recently Comcast me is the worst but to have something like this an urban area just seems silly in an insane waste of money
We definitely could have purchased an American dish too, but carrying two separate dishes seemed a bit absurd. Thankfully, Starlink came to their senses and introduced the Portability option, which lets you travel with your dish throughout Canada, the United States, and Mexico. We have a new rectangular dish now with Portability enabled and it's been working great.
Yeah, we're still really hoping that an official mobile version with a smaller and perhaps more power efficient receiver comes out. Elon promised that a while back, so I'm sure it's going to hit the market eventually! He always gets distracted by Twitter and tweeting, but usually gets back on track pretty quick. 😁
@@HomeARoam Glad to hear that. I just got my dish last month. It's the new rectangle one. It's usually pretty fast, but it drops out a lot on livestreams and online gaming. It's also really effected by storms.
So what happens when you cross the border with one? Does it self destruct? Men in black come take you away? Or is it like sat phones where 'they say' but just because someone says something the reality is very different. e.g. it still works. it's just a legal issue. I know starlink can triangulate your position easy enough but are they actively blocking connections?
BUY 2 DUH. Hve second one shipped to a USA friend or family member. Then resend it to you. Bingo you are in. VPN MIGHT also do the trick if you get a usa version
Yeah we didn't want to have to drag around 2 dishes with us and have the hassle of activating and deactivating accounts as we travel. Hoping the mobile version can cross borders.
That's really unfortunate you can't cross borders with it. I think I might still get this for when we buy a house on Vancouver Island. Mostly to get away from Telus and Shaw's monopoly.
The only thing I'd caution is that the latency might be a bit high for gaming. Nothing beats fibre to the door for that. But yeah, maybe it will help out on a bit of price pressure to those two.
They will in the future for boats, planes, and cars. It's a flat phased array so no need to tilt it. its always looking up, I think it's in concept but I seen the preview pictures and it looks like current wifi antennas on airlines sleek looking for aerodynamics
seriously? This system is designed to be set up at a specific point so that you are matched with a satellite and not to overload the system. It is not meant to be mobile, very poor review.
People have been using it on the road for quite a while, but unfortunately not cross border. Hopefully anyone who is trying that will find this video and not make the same mistake!
The star of this vlog was definitely the chicken. 😂😂😂. I don't blame you for returning the equipment. If I live on a rural farm and I have no high-speed internet that would be an awesome solution
The chickens were a welcome distraction for sure. Yes, Starlink would be so awesome for rural homesteads and in emergency situations where regular internet is down.
Elon Musk sells vaporware. His ideas are aspirational, but most of them exist as platforms to fund raise. Starlink for example requires 40 thousand low earth orbit sattelites that need to be replaced every 5 years... Chinese authorities have had to manouver their sattelites in three seperate occasions, since musk didnt calculate for their path in orbit. SpaceX spends more money reusing its rockets (glorified fuel canisters) than it would cost them to rebuild them... All while adding aditional points of failure to process. The "hyperloop" devolved into an underground single lane taxi service. Elon Musk is a fund raiser, he isnt a scientist, he didn't build tesla he purchased it, he didn't build spacex, he purchased it.. he didn't build starlink, he purchased it. His talent has always been that he was born with money. His ideas defy logic and are taylored to sound and feel plausible. Unfortunately, they arent.. Their will never be a hyperloop, spaceX is lightyears behind Nasa, for stalink to make sense financially, every single person on earth would need to subscribe to the service (the price of launches and upkeep are that bad) Tesla has a market value over 1 trillion dollars, thats 999 billion dollars more than what the business has accumulated in operation. Elon Musk made enough in tesla stocks last year to have purchased every single car tesla sold. The man is the greatest con artist the world has ever seen.
Get a US mailing address. And set up a US bank account to pay. Then you can have a US and Canadian system the antenna will work for either. Problem solved... And you have a spare antenna problem solved. Plus it doesn't need to be on the roof. Just far enough from the camper not to interfere with the tracking while it's looking for a satellite. As long as you have it on the south side you should be good. Chain it, if you are worried about someone "borrowing" it.
Yeah, that could work, but then you have another $100USD/month bill to pay when you're only using one account at a time. We decided it would be best just to wait for a more portable solution. And as it turns out, the 4G LTE service in the Southwest where we've been traveling has been more than adequate so we didn't really _need_ Starlink after all.
@@HomeARoam Just turn them on and off as needed. I'm on a budget too, so I just use my phone. No service, move until I get service... Or sometimes I don't want to be bothered so... Don't care if I have no phone or internet. And I have a monster DVD collection over 350 movies if I get bored... Mostly from when blockbuster was going out of business.
That’s too bad about the cross border issue for using that dish. Yes, I would return also for that same reason. Thanks for sharing. Hope you guys are stayin high n dry ??
For us, Starlink has been a game changer as we live off grid, 40 minutes from the nearest road, in Northern California and works seamlessly but we are not traveling around with it -definitely not to Canada or Mexico for that matter. We LOVE! having internet again. 🙏🏼🕊❣️🕊🙏🏼
That's awesome! There is definitely a place for it and it will keep getting better and better as each new model comes out. We were sad it didn't work out for our case, but maybe one day 🤞
Today Feb 9th 40 of the 49 Starlink satellites were destroyed by huge solar flare. Enjoy
Same here. We live in a rural mountain HOA in central California. Before we got Starlink our only internet option was LTE at a very slow speed limited to 15Gb a month. Many of our neighbors also got it for the same reason. For making real internet available to people that didn’t have it, the price is a bargain
@@rodversch6290 SpaceX has already deployed 1,469 Starlink satellites, 2021, don't think 40 will hurt much

Yes, we're eagerly anticipating the mobile version

Got a 2nd gen and 300 mbps 20 mbps up, AMAZING Love starlink
Wow, nice! What's your average ping? And it seems like that new "roaming" is rolling out unofficially. Here's hoping they make it official soon.

The tripod mount is not really meant for roof installs. The roof mount kits come with a nice little backpack that you can put the dish in while you climb the ladder.
Wow, really? That's awesome, they've thought of everything.
Not true, have a 4:12 pitch roof, had no problem with install
Just got the gen 2... Been running for a week...Wow...its been incredible...Sorry for your pain
Great to hear the v2 dish works well! More satellites going up so it's only going to get better!
If you have a friend/family in the states, you can tell them to order starlink for you and registry under their address. Since you can pay month to month you can shut off services after you come back to canada
We did consider that, but didn't want to have to manage two separate satellite dishes. We're hoping their mobile solution will cross borders ok.
Thanks! Appreciate the support and glad it helped with your decision. Here's hoping the upcoming mobile version can cross borders! Cheers.
Frustrating! Hope they can get these things figured out and have a single set of Starlink hardware certified to work in Canada and US (and the world!)
Yeah totally. The tech is the same the world round so it seems a bit dumb to have it locked to individual countries.
Well, at least you got a chance to try, been waiting 11 months for mine.
Bureaucracy is always innovative :-)
they came out with the 500 a month plan that can connect anywhere plus the equipment cost is 2,500
If your using it at home run the cable thru the slide seal i do it all the time with dish network.
WOW , great quality for a channel with 1k subs , you are underrated and you will grow more !
Suggestion : Could have reduced the size of this video
Thanks, and good tip! I (Jay) am always working towards tighter edits. Some of our newer videos have quicker cuts. Ironically it just takes a lot longer to create a shorter video! :)
Did you check out that you can get rv mode now. Will it work between USA and Canada
I just watched a different review today and they said that in America there is a roaming feature that cost 25.00 more than the 100 monthly fee.
Since this video has been made Starlink has released a roaming feature on the residential plan, an RV option, and the new marine option. Check out our other Starlink videos where we get a new one and try it out again. We're happy they now offer those features.
I understand that the 2nd edition antenna is square/rectangular. If anyone knows, please comment.
Yes, it's rectangular, smaller, and lighter than the original.
Is this the RV version of Star Link as they are coming out with one that can be moved around
@@HomeARoam I just got notified that Starlink is now available in my area and mine is being shipped so that's exciting news
"Gubment hard at work for you."
I wonder if in the future it will be possible to rent a dish only for a vacation.
That would be really cool, and possibly a business opportunity! :)
Not designed to be mobile, but used successfully by many -- of course only if you stay in the country where you purchased the dish.
Didn't you read the info before you ordered. They are not very mobile at this point but should be in the future.
Yeah we're excited about the upcoming mobile satellite Elon Musk keeps mentioning. Can't come soon enough!
I've taken many dish type antenna down being a roofer and that thing is pretty small in comparison to your body
Thankfully the new v2 dish is much smaller and lighter. I'm sure the next gen will be even better!
This must be really old video. The one that my friend got months ago is small rectangle.
Thanks for the info.
I wonder if it would be possible to rent out the system to visitors.

Not sure about email but if you're a customer, you can contact support through the web portal. They were quick and helpful getting back to me.
@@HomeARoam Got it, thanks!
At least you got yours. I’ve been waiting a year for any kind of news on when I’ll get mine. It appears that Starlink has no real customer service.
Yeah it seems a bit random who gets them and when. And now they have that super premium $500/mo Starlink service which is just ridiculous expensive!
Return and then reorder instead of holding on to it? You probably don't realize the wait time for one now do you?
Starlink is a New Future for the People.
It might be. Let's just hope they can figure out how to get it approved for use in multiple countries. I'd be happy if it could at least be taken from Canada to the United States and Mexico.
I know Canadians that came to Texas and it works for them
Interesting!
My Xfinity home WiFi latency is anywhere from 20-25 ms so that's really not bad at all
Yeah, a 30ms ping is decent for sure, especially if that's the all-in latency from the Internet to the device.
Great information. I’d read a bit about it, but now have a better understanding!
Great to hear!
Curious though would the wind just knock it off
Wind could definitely be an issue.
it is roaming now, no need to change service address.....
That model is probably a bit easier to roam with :)
rv companies should offer starlink rental services.
That's not a bad idea! Still would be nicer of you could use the same dish in both countries though. I suspect we'll be able to soon enough.
did you get your money back?
Yes, we did! They have a 30-day return policy that was quick and easy to take advantage of.
Here's hoping!
roaming now on for most , and support for use while driving
That's great news! Any word if it crosses borders now?
Hey Jay, thanks for giving us your feedback about it! We wanted to take it as well so I'm glad that you checked it out! Hopefully they will announce a mobile device soon, I think that it would be a game changer for RVers. Cheers!
Yeah no kidding right? They can't make the mobile version soon enough! 😁
Lol, yeah it was a pretty big surprise, but much better than taking it all the way down there and then finding out! 😁
They will eventually make it so any dish can work anythwere I'm sure
The Shaw Mobile dish is paid month by month. You can suspend it for the winter if you are back in town them.
Love your RV has done a bunch of videos about starlink and his inability to use it in the us. Larry
Yeah I checked those out - unfortunately -after- we already received it. Really hope Starlink is able to remove the country geofencing soon so it becomes a truly worldwide solution.
I mean it does say you can only have it in one spot
But it also lets you update your address at will. That's how RVers and vanlifers have been using it so far.
seem like a false advertising to me, i remember promo saying "internet around the world". I definitely got a vibe that u can travel with that dish anywhere u wish and still get the internet... thank you for education will pass on that one
Hopefully the next version of Starlink will be more portable and more international.
Looks like you could order a second dish by getting a US address and use the one in the US when you are in the US and disable the one in BC, and when in BC reactivate the one in BC and disable billing for the one in US
Yeah, we tried but unfortunately the wait time is so long that we have still been unable to receive it.
not sure what your really talking about 30 ms is great for gaming
I'm not really a gamer anymore, so I really have no idea, but for some reason I thought modern gamers were looking for like sub-10ms pings. But I do know that people use Starlink for gaming.
@@HomeARoam less than 10ms ping? That's prolly about 1% of the population that can get and maintain that on a reg
What was the ping
It was about 30ms. Not bad.
It probably doesn't help that you set it up directly beneath high voltage power lines.
They weren't high voltage, but there were definitely a few obstructions where I set up, including some trees, so that would have affected the speed.
I guess that means it won't work on a boat, either. Bummer! Sure hope they get it figured out soon. This will be a big boon to cruisers.
I've seen videos with boaters using it but they must be in coastal waters.
I can game at 90ms without issues, even against those with 30+/- ms. So if 30 is it's lowest I'm sold!
Yeah, reconsidering, I think Starlink is perfectly ok for gaming.
My current speed tests give me 20ms
I hope they add in the future the fact that a Canadian dish won’t work in the states.
Yeah they don't really make it obvious, but it seems like all dishes are only licensed in the country they're sold and are geofenced by GPS to make sure you can't use them elsewhere. 😟
Just FYI, 30ms is fine for any kind of gaming.
Yeah after filming I realized it was alright. Just not the 10ms I'm used to on fiber.
Get one that works in the states, or try it anyways in the states and see if it works.
Yes, we've heard recently that roaming is working for Americans, but yet to confirm whether it's been enabled for Canadian dishes. If it seems like roaming is a thing for us, we'll be ordering up a new receiver!
Looking forward to this changing to include anywhere, after the "War" [Dark to Light]
Thanks! Yes we do actually have a square receiver now and I did an update about using the service with an RV. You can check out bit.ly/starlink-rv
The answer linked to the title of the video (why returning) at 5:08
Spoiler alert! 😁
A renting service would be very useful to you
That's true! Maybe they'll have that someday.
Thanks, couldn't have said it better myself! 😁
For the same reason I'm waiting for my Roadster after $65000 down payment 5years ago!
Yeesh, that sucks!
That's too bad. Is purchasing a US Starlink an option for Canadian customers?
I mean, not really. You need a US address to ship it to and a US location to activate it at. Could be something to look into...
@@HomeARoam And couldn't you ship it to a transborder agencies like Freeportforwarding in Ny State, and use their address to activate?
I have cable and I get 30ms.
Average latency on steam for fps games is 20ms.
Yes I agree, 30ms isn't bad latency. I'm just applied with my 10ms fiber. 😁
Hi Jay and Mel! great info to know! I’m surprised how big and heavy it is too! So if we go to Canada we’d have the same issues I suppose! Guess we will wait until all of these issues get resolved because it sure would be nice to have!
Thanks for the video!
Yeah, it's a pretty lame limitation. They are definitely working on making it mobile, but it will probably be a while.
@@HomeARoam they sure would have a big market for it being mobile. 🤞
Oh yeah, it will be huge when they release their fully mobile solution. But they need a lot more satellites up first.
Good video Jay! Thanks for sharing! All the best on the new adventure!
Thanks, Cheers!
Are you saying there's NO WAY for you to get an American version of the starlink???🤔🤔🤔
@@HomeARoam - does portability only work with the gen 2 dish?
You should have known Starlink is not for traveling yet even if just in US. It’s for stationary locations only at this time.
People have been using it in RVs using the location change feature, but yes you're right, officially it is only for stationary use.
The company has a lot of upgrading to do. I hope Elon doesn't get too distracted by Twitter and become lax with improvements to this service.
That’s a bummer! We have ours in order and I’m excited.
Yeah a bit disappointing for sure. Are you planning to travel with yours?
So what happens when you cross the border with one?
Does it self destruct?
Men in black come take you away?
Or is it like sat phones where 'they say' but just because someone says something the reality is very different.
e.g. it still works. it's just a legal issue.
I know starlink can triangulate your position easy enough but are they actively blocking connections?
LOL, yeah unfortunately it is actually geofenced to the country it was bought in and there's no way around it currently. 😟
@@HomeARoam ahh good old software restrictions. That always works out well.
Let the hacking begin I say..
I didn’t understand all of your tech talk, but I sure understood the disappointment! Oh well, you just have to travel the old fashioned way!
Kind of puts things in perspective that near-ubiquitous 4G Internet is now "old-fashioned" but it's true! 😁
@@HomeARoam More than anything, keep yourselves safe.
Thanks Paul.
@@HomeARoam You never DID answer the question of trying out a VPN which requires nothing of the sort.
But yeah, maybe it will help out on a bit of price pressure to those two.
they need to make an rv friendly like a collapsible antenna or a flat dish mounted on a roof of the vehicle
They will in the future for boats, planes, and cars. It's a flat phased array so no need to tilt it. its always looking up, I think it's in concept but I seen the preview pictures and it looks like current wifi antennas on airlines sleek looking for aerodynamics
@@anthonynye1747 can’t wait I’m just waiting till they come up with new flat dish format lol
Their will never be a hyperloop, spaceX is lightyears behind Nasa, for stalink to make sense financially, every single person on earth would need to subscribe to the service (the price of launches and upkeep are that bad)
Tesla has a market value over 1 trillion dollars, thats 999 billion dollars more than what the business has accumulated in operation.
Yeah, really disappointed about the address changing limitations with the Starlink.
Still dry so far, thanks for asking 🙂 You?
@@HomeARoam We are good here, Thanks for asking...staying dry !
