Our first song and one Iceland holds close to its heart to this day. You won't believe how crushed we were when we only came 16th, so sure were we of victory. We have had way more successful entries since, but "Gleðibankinn" is and remains a classic that everyone in Iceland knows.
I was also convinced that Iceland would win, I remember betting on this song and was so disappointed that it didn't win... not the last time Iceland has been robbed of victory!
They never deserved to go to Eurovision though, ok song though. Massive legend the song that came second in the competition to represent Iceland, "Eg lifi í draumi". Legendary song. Nobody like his Gleðibankinn song really, but it is known to Icelanders because of it was Iceland's first Eurovision song. Look up "Eg lifi i draumi". Legendary, made in 1986 and still sounds awesome.
I always scored the Eurovision and gave this 12. I was astonished it did so badly. So catchy. I found it looking and it's as good as ever. I can't understand why this didn't do better.
I don't know why but the choreography and their stage chemistry makes me feel like they are all best friends who sometimes bang when they're drunk, but they're all cool about it afterwards, and I mean that in a good way
I think Eirikur still lives in Norway even though it is some years ago I saw him on TV, when he walked together with his friends in Oslo :) To years after he and the other from Icy, who performed and song Gleðibankinn in ESC in Norway in 1986 in 1988 Eiríkur Hauksson, which is the name of the metal band singer he have lived in Norway since 1988 and still does :) You can read about him here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eir%C3%ADkur_Hauksson
This theme was the best that year. The most original, nice and armonical, with a great performance. I haven,t ever understood how was so underrated (16th place). Shameful injustice. I,m proud that my country Spain was who more points gave to Iceland that year (6 points in only total 19 points).
Very cute and unique. Good and meaningful lyrics compared to crappy these days. Generally Iceland always seems to have some meaningful lyrics. Orchestra should have been louder! its a nice arrangement on studio version. Much better then many Icelandic entries later on. Quite evergreen.

I think he is talking about the sound mix of the orchestra. You can not hear the keyboard part which is quite important to the song. And also the strings and brass part are very low in the mix. And the orchestra as a whole is mixed to low compared to the vocals.
escLIVEmusic1 no he is singing abote bank i am icelandig so i know wat the are singing abote and the song name is gleðibakinn so its obvious its a bank
I was always wondering whether was accidental or intentional when camera rolls to the blond singer while he stares somewhere in the ceiling at 2:18. By the way, this was in my favorites. IMO, 1986 was one of the best in ESC.

Pretty underrated placing considering how weak 1986 was in terms of entries. This winning the contest was a bit of a stretch, but it deserved at least a top 10. It was definitely a very good debut entry.

I love love love this icelandic song! Should have been a top 3 placing!!! 🇮🇸🇩🇰🇮🇸🇩🇰🇮🇸
Definitely. ^^ Should've been a joint winner with Belgium and Sweden. Amazing song. @Morten
I know all the lyrics and I'm not even Icelandic
This song and performance were ahead of their time. Anyway they deserved a better place.

This is my fav song of the year but I wouldn't call it ahead of its time. It's pretty typical 80s
I love this song. Wonderful entry. Still listening to it in 2018.

86 was such an outstanding music year that this song was "only" average ... costumes, hairstyles, great tunes ... ah, nostalgia!

19 actually, but thank you Spain all the same!

Best song from Eurovision 1986 and from Iceland.
Its a Debut for Iceland! Not the best song!

Did they have synthesizers in the orchestra?
yes, they had.
why there is a tv where the conductor is standing?
Probably a monitor to see how the performance looks without him having to constantly turn around

silly song
also didn’t eiríkur (the ginger) kinda cheat his way in?
kinda because he didn't win in the national selection he was just chosen as a singer because they didn't want to the actual singer to sing :/
If this is the first song Iceland sent to Eurovision, it's not surprising they never won... lol
