After a huge amount of consideration, I decided to buy it back in January and I haven't looked back. It is unbelievably sharp. At the same time, I bought the NISI S6 filter kit and it was a marriage made in heaven! The lens and filter holder are now permanently attached to one of my A7R3 bodies.
I bought this lens specifically for astrophotography and it is staggeringly good, especially at the 14mm end. I've also had the 14mm f1.8, and the stars in the corners of the 14-24 at 14mm are better than the 14mm prime, even with both at f2.8.
@@johncarter4415 this is definitely a great lens, although I have recently sold mine. Before I write a load, I'm assuming you have Sony mount? And you're talking about the 14mm f1.8 Sigma? Or the Sony 14mm GM?
@@therealherphero brilliant lens and I do miss it! I bought the Sony 12-24 GM because I wanted 12mm, and when the Sony 14mm GM was announced, I bought that too, so I sold the Sigma 14-24. All 3 are absolutely superb for astro, but the prime is the best of them. I'd still not be without a wide zoom, I use it more than the prime, but for astro specifically the new-ish Sony 14mm is unbeatable for ultra-wide.
Wonderful! Some great images. And excellent as always. Pink does suit you too. Keep up the good work! Nice to see a genuine photographer not pushing rubbish opinions.
Just finished testing the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 lens for astrophotography on Orion constellation since Milky Way season is over. It has a moderate amount of coma/astigmatism at 14mm at F1.8. Less coma and astigmatism at F2.8 and less at F4 with a star tracker. It is too heavy to me to go hiking with or traveling with and carrying it on my neck with the Nikon Z6ii. I tried the Rokinon 14mm F2.4 and it is worse with coma at F2.4 but better at F2.8 and F4 with a star adventurer mount. The best option I tried was the Nikon Z 20mm F1.8 lens takes 77mm filters and weighs half. Also, it still had coma at F1.8 but less so than the other 2 lenses. I will be sending the Sigma lens back. I havent tried the New Nikon Z14-24mm F2.8, but seems expensive if all I want to use it for is some milky way and North Georgia mountain photos.
I bought the 12-24 f4.0 Art and am now wondering if the faster 14-24 2.8 would have been a better choice. Because for landscape work I felt I would likely never need to shoot the 12-24 wide open, I felt like the extra light-gathering of the 2.8 would be of less value than the extra field of view the 12-24 would provide. And of course, my first opportunity to use the 12-24 came while touring a cavern, when the low-light setting would have clearly benefited from having a 2.8. 😩 Any experience with the 12-24 f4 Art?
I m astrophotographer, if you become snob with your astro shots it s time to buy a small astrotracker. Few hundred dollars and you can shoot 1 or 2 minutes exposures. It means you don't need super fast lens crazy expensive anymore. And you can shoot milky way with a 50 mm. It s a game changer
I’ve been saying that for a while. A good tracker can go for 5 minutes with good tracking. Stop the lens down and lower your iso depending on your iso variance.
I was looking at this lens but I’m so hesitant to grab it, primarily because I would feel so much safer being able to put a UV filter over the front so that I can protect the front lens element. Do you know of any aftermarket attachments that protect that front element?
Few lenses can truly resolve well on our a7RIVs - do you feel this is one of those lenses that can squeeze every pixel out? I almost don't want you to answer since this is the next lens I'm buying in a week or two, lol. I shoot a ton of day-light long exposure, but I figure I'll get used to the rear-mounted filter system.
Leigh: "OMG, what a wonderful lens!!!. It's worth $1400...damn, can't afford it now :( But, if I save up for a few weeks!!!!..." :) If you're in the market for a UW prime lens, have a look at the Rokinon 10mm f/2.8. A few of my friends use it for astro and love the lens. The same lens also comes as a Samyang, too, if you can't find the Rokinon branded version in store. Went over to B&H to have a look at the price. At the moment, there's a sale on and they're going for around $350. So, not a bad price!!
I still think I want the 16-35mm GM as it takes filters easier. The 24mm f1.4 GM is my astro go to, but I'd still use the 16-35gm and probably stack. Sigmas 14mm prime is too heavy for my liking although I think they may release a lighter pure mirrorless design one in the future.
I cant wait to see if the Nikon 14-24 2.8 S is a flat front lens as rumored to be, that would be a game changer in the ultra wide world. Stupid spendy I am sure, but only time will tell???
Having owned a few Sigmas lenses, both zooms and a prime, this one looks like it's susceptible to flaring. This is what kills me about Sigma lenses. They always, almost, make a perfect full-frame lens.
The other Sigma wide angle lenses like 20mm F1.4 or 24mm F1.4 are very very inferior than this zoom. Even when they are primes and have more aperture, they have less elements and worst distorsion control. The Sigma 14-24 for reflex is also worst than this DG DN version. The only true competitors are the 14mm DG HSM F1.8 and 35 DG DN F1.2 but they are more expensive...
Great review, and those astro timelapses are fab.
Best part? The look on your face remembering how you felt when the park opened up again - Joy!

That time lapse shot at the 3m mark is just breathtaking. I'll need to save up for this lens for my S5ii.

Was wondering if I should trade my prime for this one. I hate how the corners are on the 14mm prime

Does this work with a A7iii

This was the first lens l purchased for my S5. I am currently waiting for my 150-600 dg dn to arrive, and for the Covid lock downs to go away.

Works ok with the Canon EOS R + Adaptor?
How was it to manually focus for astrophotography? I struggle with focus by wire.

i like how you do reviews......... and i like that you love the nature......

Your sensitivity and vision is touching and appreciated!!
Have you reviewed or compared this lens with the Sigma 14mm F1.8 for Sony E mount ???
Can't decide which one I should go

This kind of angle is also very useful in a extreme compact cityscape.
Most excellent photography!

To answer your question on the lenses for z7 it's amazing!!
Do you ever photograph lightning? Or have any recommendations on technique?
Pluto trigger - works every time.

sorry should v mentioned there is a filter adaptor for built in lens hoods 👍
Um isn’t that thing like $500? Not really a good option imo
I loved this lens on my ex D850 ..better than the Nikon version..No Distortion ..Now I am on Z7 and have the 14-30 f4 S
great stuff . just replaced my nikon trinity for new versions .. on the hair though funky 😊

It is not rumored to have a flat front element, the images of the pre-production lens have all had a bulbous front element.
Great video and review!! :)
Very nice video.Love the hair.
Thanks for watching!

That was a bummer to see as I was curious about it too. That's a pretty important aspect for landscapes that can ruin images.
And chromatic aberrations specially with their primes. I love the flares esp with portraits tho

Greeting from Qatar your vedio is good and useful thank you
Sony has announced a 12/24mm f2.8 will wait and see if it’s affordable 😂😱
Sony has not announced such a lens yet, although it is rumored.
Well, if you have $3,000 laying around collecting dust, it is yours.
Wide 😀
I enjoyed looking at her eyes just as much as the review lol beautiful overall
It’s totally useless because I have a nikon z6 and it doesn’t work so they might have lost a sale.
Good review.... pass on the pink
