Alteregomaniac - The Chris Gaines Story

  • It took me years to find the Chris Gaines Behind the Music and NBC Special on VHS and put them on the internet. Before I uploaded those videos in 2014, Chris Gaines had been completely scrubbed from the internet. For over a decade the only Chris Gaines video you could find on the internet was an old Daily Show clip of Jon Stewart making fun of it. To get the VH1 Behind the Music I had to find some Garth fan in Texas that just happened to record everything Garth ever did on VHS, the VH1 special only aired once on TV, that's why our copy is pretty low fi. As for the NBC special, I actually got my hands on an official VHS promotional copy.
The Chris Gaines saga has always fascinated me, because its one of the weirdest chapters in popular music history. Its an epic tragedy in which the number one selling solo artist of all time at the peak of his career in 1999 made one of the most bizarre career moves imaginable that would make him a laughing stock and land him in early retirement and self imposed exile. Garth Brooks decided he wanted to have a rock star alter ego, but he didn't want to write any rock songs, he just wanted to write a really detailed fictional bio for his charachter named Chris Gaines, dress like a french mime take off his cowboy hat and put on a wig....confused yet? Keep reading, I've been giving this a lot of thought and I think I can explain:
If you don’t write your own music but have a talent for singing and performing, at some point you might attempt to get creative with the one thing you have control over - your image. Having an alter ego is something you might expect from a female pop star or glam rocker, but it was really unusual when Country super star Garth Brooks created the Chris Gaines persona 1999 at the height of his fame. Perhaps the most peculiar part of the Chris Gaines story is that when it came time to record the album, Garth had other people do the songwriting just like with his country stuff. Garth did however don a wig, an outrageous Prince style wardrobe and wrote an insanely detailed and entirely fictional biography for Chris Gaines. Garth’s fans were seeing a very different and strange new side of Garth. Unlike Johnny Cash or Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks was playing the character of a country star and now a rock star, he didn’t really have 'friends in low places' - the guy that wrote that song did! (Dwayne Blackwell). When Garth dumbfounded his fans with his Chris Gaines persona he inadvertently tipped his hand and showed his fans that he was just pretending to be a cowboy the same way he was pretending to be a rocker. All of a sudden the black cowboy hat seemed as fake as the black Trent Reznor wig and Garth went into early retirement, a self imposed exile of more that 10 years. It’s only been in the last few years that Garth has started to make his way back in to music, this time as Garth Brooks exclusively, with nearly every mention or video of Chris Gaines scrubbed from the internet. It was such an epic fall from the top selling solo artist of all time to laughing stock and obscurity. The moral of the story is an album has two sides, always turn it over and see who’s writing the music.

You gotta admit it's weird that he didn't write a single song on the Chris Gaines album but did write a fantasy bio. That would be like if David Bowie didn't write any of the Ziggy Stardust songs but wrote a detailed Ziggy Stardust bio, and Ziggy Stardust was just a dude in a wig.

Garth Brooks did not write 'Friends in Low Places'. The truth is that he did write all of the songs from the Chris Gaines album, but was advised against taking credit because of the great risk to his career. About one 'hit' was spawned by this Goth Brooks monstrosity of an idea, simply because Goth sang the songs from the Chris Gaines album. Not having to take full credit for those songs probably paved the way for his comeback, after the near Hollywood failure that surely would have cemented him as a full on joke, not to mention the favor he pulled getting himself inserted into minor league baseball.

It’s so annoying how people write articles and make videos of completely false information. Garth did not create an alter ego. He was asked to do the soundtrack for a movie project and eventually asked to play the main role in the movie also. They released the soundtrack a year before the movie so audiences could become familiar with the music of this fictional. Backstory was created for this movie character and they started promoting it. It was no secret that it was a fictional movie role and anyone who actually listened to his interviews and watched the tv promotional specials would know this. Unfortunately the movie never got made (like so many film projects don’t) and he was left with a fictional soundtrack with no movie to go with it. Know the real story and then you can comment on it.

I have always found the Chris Gaines saga pretty cool. I was standing in a Towers Record store in front of a wall of headphones. One pair hung underneath the Chris Gaines’ album. I had never heard of CG but knew Garth Brooks. Weird scenario happened though: also a pair of headphones hung next Marc Anthony's newly released album. The song I played was ”When I Dream At Night” by Marc Anthony but I was looking at the Chris Gaines’ album. After the confusion I finally matched up the right album with headphones did I listen to ”Lost In You”. When I found out it was by Garth Brooks I thought ’Cool! I hope he does more music like this. This is risky but I like the song.’ This has always been an interesting career move for Garth that I personally thought was actually a great idea.

*Correction* - Garth co-wrote some of his country songs but did not write a single song on the Chris Gaines album. *Epilogue* : After the Chris Gaines project flopped, Garth tried out for a major league baseball team! So it must have been one hell of a mid life crises, imagine the self confidence it would take to put on a wig and pretend to be a rockstar and then when that didn't work tryout for a major league baseball team. He ranked last in the tryouts, and then got signed to a minor league team perhaps as a promotional thing on the part of the owner. There's so many unanswered questions with this project. He obviously really believed in The Lamb or he wouldn't have turned down the lead role in Twister and the role of the sniper in Saving Private Ryan. But if you want to rock and take time away from country wouldn't you want to write the songs on your rock album? I have so many questions, let me hear yours in the comments.

I've always wondered how much was inspired by Clapton's "Change the World." It's a really great record, and I could see Garth going off his nut when he heard it. And I'm thinking that he asked the writers of that song to come up with the necessary material for the Gaines album. Unfortunately, all the songs were lame, not a single hit, which may be a big reason why the whole Gaines project flopped.

I'm back. Noticed you still haven't admitted you're wrong about Garth "never writing his own songs) as according to AllMusic, he wrote or co-wrote 31 songs. Those songs are (in alphabetical order): Ain't Goin' Down ('Til the Sun Comes Up), All Day Long, Baby Let's Lay Down and Dance, The Beaches of Cheyenne, Dive Bar, From Where I'm Sitting, If Tomorrow Never Comes, In Another's Eyes, It's Midnight Cinderella Like We Never Had a Broken Heart, Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old), The Night I Called the Old Man Out, The Night Will Only Know, Not Counting You, Papa Loved Mama, The Red Strokes, The River, She's Every Woman, She's Gonna Make It, Somewhere Other Than the Night, Standing Outside the Fire, That Ol' Wind, That Summer, Thicker Than Blood, The Thunder Rolls, Unanswered Prayers, We Shall Be Free, What She's Doing Now, Whatcha Gonna Do with a Cowboy, When You Come Back to Me Again, Why Ain't I Running?
You gonna admit you're a hack and take down this video, or do I have to make a video exposing you as one? Also, none of that information on the production of The Lamb is inaccurate, as well. Garth had nothing to do with the story, he was literally just an actor in the film.

Dude, the talent to act out a song to give it expression, stage presence, and good vocals; all of which Garth has; is what makes anyone a great performer. Lots of people don't write their own album songs. Never the less, this guy is super talented. YOU try and sing as beautifully as he does, or emote and express the song to make it your own as well as him...just try it. People love him for good reasons. Lastly, I don't remember hearing him ever have to tear anyone down to feel better about himself like you did. Jealousy sucks, man. I'm sure you're talented at something else if you think about it, quit trying to belittle a super-star like Garth Brooks. He has earned all 14 of his awards including Billboard, Grammy's, People's choice awards, American Music Awards, etc., One just doesn't merit all those for being as you insinuate, a fake. He's good entertainment all the way though. Get over it.

      PREACH!!!
As this video points out, Garth was ON TOP OF THE WORLD when he pulled the Chris Gaines stunt. To me, that took a lot of fucking balls! He could have easily sat back and rested on his laurels…doing nothing more than pumping out the “same old, same old” country albums. Yeah, he has continued to release more country albums after the failed Chris Gaines experiment, but one has got to appreciate the fact that he took such a risk.
For even a Star as big as Garth Brooks was at the time, such a stunt could have permanently killed his career. Crazier things have happened to ruin people’s careers, ya know? It’s not fair to try and fault someone for wanting to try something *NEW*. Yep, it failed…but at least he can say HE TRIED. It’s long been known that Garth is a huge fan of KISS and AC/DC, so for him to want to “be a Rock Star for a day” isn’t all that surprising.
The dude was simply “stretching his legs”, as the saying goes, and trying on new things. Nothing wrong that. Lots of us should probably be doing the same.

The Character of Chris Gaines was a brooding character, the character was MEANT to be somewhat disturbing. Chris Gaines is a character that Garth Brooks played and embodied. It is not the same as Garth Brook's personality. He DID however tap into some personal feelings from losing his mother in order to be able to play the character and make it believable. He was very close to his mother. His mother was his strength, and he kinda lost his spark for a while after she past. There is an interview with him on the Donny and Marie daytime talk show where he talked about the fact that at that time, he was still trying to cope, and he was crying, and Donny and Marie were both crying, and it was when he was working on the Chris Gaines project, because he talked about the project in the interview.

But Garth Brooks wrote a ton of his own songs. Google it. He won the Gershwin Prize where they honored songs that he had written. Anyways, an expressed personality doesn’t have to stay specifically to one genre of music whenever it is being expressed. Garth can express himself with country music and songs like The Change while doing the same with some R&B with songs that he wrote the backstory to. He was probably just scared to wreck the persona of a country star that he had built so he decided to split his emotions into two characters. Garth and Chris ARE the same people, but Garth didn’t want them to run together, probably out of fear of being ridiculed, which he somewhat expressed in the song “Main Street.” He was conflicted because he wanted to chase something, in this case his emotions he felt as Chris, but felt that if he did, he would end up worthless and thus a disappointment, which is why he decided to split up the characters. He had more that he wanted to express, but didn’t know how to do it, not because he was afraid of failure because of his ego, but because he didn’t want anyone to be ashamed of him or view him in a different light. I honestly don’t blame him because I am afraid of being viewed differently, too. This, however, is just my theory, but it always helps whenever you think about reasons why someone could have done something. It makes you feel better than when you just assume they have a mental illness like I’ve seen many doing in the comments of videos such as these. We all have a little bit of Jekyll and a little bit of Hyde in us. Garth just chose to not embrace each at once but rather separate them. I honestly don’t blame him, because we live in a society that is desperately worried about what others think, and he cannot help that his the vitality of his image was constantly being imprinted into his mind as a celebrity.

That's why bands like The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails, Devo, Whitney Houston, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, The Smiths and T-Rex aren't in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame but a random rapper like Grand Master Flash gets inducted. It's meaningless, is my point, how have you not figured that out yet? Also why does it bother you that Garth didn't write most of his songs?

Instead of admitting you were wrong, you're changing definitions of words to protect your precious ego. "Songwriter" doesn't mean "created the song 100% on your own", it means you contributed in some way to the song's existence. Wow! You really need to get your facts straight before trashtalking someone. He was not trying out rock or pop or whatever...he was involved with a movie production about a fictitious character and wanted to make the character feel like a real person to viewers. He released a soundtrack a year before the movie release so people would be familiar with the music. The music videos and in-character appearances was for the same reason. He made it clear in every interview "as himself" that it was just a movie character. Also, he didn't lie about his dad dying. He said he could relate to the song about Chris Gaines' dad dying because his own mother had just died. And songwriting...yes, he did a lot of that often with other songwriters. Pat Alger and him would be in a room for hours writing the lyrics and music to a lot of his songs including Thunder Rolls. He co-wrote That Summer with his wife Sandy and another person. He's written songs for Trisha back in the day that he didn't even sing in and no one would even know if they didn't look at the CD booklet. He always gives credit to writers and never takes writing credit for songs that were given to him. You need to do a lot more research before you spin a story like that.

What this boils down to: famous musician sets out to make a movie, famous musician puts out the music first to see how his fans will react to his character's sound, famous musician doesn't wind up making the movie, and clueless douche bags continue to insist his brief exercise in acting was an alter ego or some sort of momentary lapse of reason worthy of mockery.
    Let's say this went differently.
Let's say that Garth, his team, and his label poured all their energies into the advance campaign for "The Lamb," including leaking that Garth had been considered for roles in other films such as "Saving Private Ryan," "Twister," and "The Green Mile" (the third isn't mentioned in Sanderson's lawsuit, but I recall reading about it in a Country Weekly career retrospective as a kid).
In the run-up, they publicize the creative process as Garth works with Babyface and Don Was on the music.
The singles that sound the least different from the Garth we know ("Main Street" and "It Don't Matter To The Sun" are good candidates; the latter was even a minor country radio hit) are released as teasers.
And then, for the same reason it died in our world minus the album flopping (there was also a major health issue in the screenwriter's family that needed attending to), the movie doesn't happen. But Garth doesn't want to leave the songs in the can, because he just spent several months to a year working in a whole different vein than he ever has. So he tells his fans that he wants them to know what his character would have sounded like and what songs would have been part of the movie, and he releases the album.
Would you still be calling him an alteregomaniac? Poor planning and an enthusiastic rush for the potential dollars from an album are the only issues this project suffered from. I don't see anyone criticizing Queen Latifah for "The Dana Owens Album" or Beyonce for Sasha Fierce.
