- Benzene's been detected in some sunscreens by Valisure, an online pharmacy that believes the FDA doesn't monitor drugs in the US closely enough (sound familiar?). Here's the lowdown on how much you should be freaking out about your sunscreen.

UPDATE: Prof Martyn Smith - the toxicologist who Valisure cited for the claim that “there is no safe level of benzene” - talked to the Washington Post and confirmed that benzene in sunscreen isn’t a big risk (equivalent to breathing city air for half a day in the worst case scenario) - check it out here: www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/benzene-sunscreen-safe-carcinogen-/2021/06/04/33723cb6-c55f-11eb-9a8d-f95d7724967c_story.html
Yet it is true that it gets absorbed in the blood and has a potency to cause Baldder carcinoma.
Okay. If you're applying a lot of it everyday, as many people do, then it makes sense that it would pose a greater risk and is still a major concern.
@@Riya-bv3ix Got a source for that chief?
Watch, now we're going to see "benzene free" on labels lololol.
If this ain't true 😂
😩
and then get tested with it anyway ..
So true. Lmao.
@@w.w.w.n this 🙌 lmao
Marketers : Hooray 🎉 Another way to market our products, BENZENE free…
It’s like “hey fda pay attention to this low risk chemical instead of giving us the newer/ more stable sunscreen filters” thanks guyz
Ugh good point 😩
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience I actually thought benzene makes sunscreen more stable and thermoresistant but I guess there's no specific benefit of having it in a sunscreen?
@@karcavida3250 Nope, and it’s definitely not helping with that at ppm levels
Benzene is not a low risk chemical.
The media loves to see a new study that they can use for a fearmongering, clickbait headline
Unfortunately! It does feel very irresponsible - it’s how a lot of damaging myths get embedded, like vaccines causing autism…
like, ‘Is Your Dishwasher Giving You Alzheimers? Shocking New Study’
Stop breathing if you live in a city and you want to avoid benzene 😂. Benzene is everywhere. 😉 Stop the fear. Finally a vlog that's level headed.
Driving a car is much more dangerous than sunscreen, that does not stop people from using cars.
Never stop posting videos about sunscreen!! I watch every single one!
"We don't swallow sunscreen. well, I don't know what you do with your life" hahaha meanwhile me tasting sunscreen every day during my breakfast after I slathered it on my face and lips earlier... yeah, we don't swallow sunscreens...
Wait what? We don't swallow sunscreens?! Oh no...
OMG this sent me XD
My boyfriend is always kissing me and Iḿ sure he has eaten so much sunscreen because of that.
The idea of people using clean beauty because they’re worried about “chemicals”… while also not caring about their use of plastics and the pollution during production baffles me.
If you’re gonna be worried about benzene, sunscreen is the last of your problems.
I was hoping to hear about this in more detail! Other videos mentioned that the sun is dangerous too and that we already encounter benzene in our daily environment, but I still wanted to get a clearer sense of the relative estimated risk of ~6ppm of benzene. It's summer and I want to go outside without burning, but this was an unnerving bit of news.
Thank you. People seemd to also miss that if it is a contamination issue and batch based, your "safe" brand on the list may just have been tested for a good batch different to yours and you're unwittingly slathering contaminated stuff.
Funny thing is how they always scrutinize sunscreens when i have a feeling toners/serums probably have a bigger and more legit scandals?
Well, you don't need serums to protect you from UV rays so that you don't get skin cancer and die... It's a totally different category, IMO. Sunscreen should really be treated as medical products, not just as cosmetics.
@@karcavida3250 pretty sure in some countries it is a quasi drug. Irregardless, precisely becos of how impt sunscreen is a protecting us from skin cancer, its funny how much h8 and doubt it receives which manifests as this constant scrutiny to find ways "sunscreen is the ultimate scam evil" when lit all of those scandals r scientifically dispriven or negligible in their harm esp when weighing against its proven protective benefit? Then look at all the gimmicky serums out there which receives those half-ass scientific "research" and everyone clamours for the latest bee venom or whatever without anyone detecting for benzene? Its the double standard for me
@@llamaliammm yeah, I get your point, I think I kinda misunderstood your initial comment ^^
Please don’t stop with the sunscreen videos!!! Maybe if you keep posting them the myths will finally be put to rest and more people will actually wear it.
I need to wear it otherwise I get fried. I envy people with dark skin, the likelihood they'll get skin cancer if exposed to the sun without sunscreen is much smaller 😭 The other day I was sitting and sipping coffee with my friend. He couldn't understand why I need sunscreen and parasols because he has a thicker, darker skin. Despite wearing it on a regular basis in summer, I still feel like a rookie because apparently sometimes I apply too little or purchase the crappy ones. Michelle's videos are truly god-sent for us pale gang.
I'll be honest, I have health anxiety and can fall victim to fear mongering relatively easily. Your videos are great for that. Thank you for posting this 💖
But i want next video about sunscreen 😆😂
Wah ada kak lifni
It probably will be tbh 😂😂😂
idk u watch this too, btw hi sista~
there aren't ENOUGH videos about sunscreen in my opinion - we need to bash it in peoples skulls everything about sunscreen. - i say bring it on
"this guy" thank you for making it clear that we should not punch dogs
I’m not sure it was clear enough, someone out there is very very upset right now that I’m endorsing punching dogs 😩
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Can't stop laughing 😂😂😂😂
I know she was making an analogy but I'm sure dogs everywhere didn't appreciate that......
Yes, at last sensible video thank you, as a Toxicologist reading the valisure report was a bit weird and i felt it tried a Fearmongering phrases and terms, and there is a lot of fact about benzene that we don't know, for example how the form of sunscreen for tested the spray form can have an effect to help with benzene evaporation due to its high vapor pressure and so many things.
amazing video 🧡❤👏
Thank you! Yeah agreed, the report isn’t very clear about how they sampled the sunscreen sprays - it does sound a bit like they lined up the spray hole with the vial and sprayed in, which would cause extra benzene in the sample compared to how it would end up on skin…
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience i wouldn't be surprised 😂👌
@@Moskinlab Hi, I used the top bad sunscreen for many years and would I reapply. I haven’t used it for years now but I’m worried I’ll have blood cancer later on. Do you know the latency period of this chemical and cancer? I can’t sleep at night I feel like I’m waiting to get this :( just for “responsible” sunscreen wear. I wear all year round usually
@@laurenreilly-cothias6561 hey, you don't have to worry at all, this a very limited issues that is focused on this specific patch of sunscreen not the whole sunscreen brand since its creation, so you don't have to worry at all about any side effects and keep using sunscreen that is tested negative for benzene.
@@Moskinlab I used to use Neutrogena ultra sheer mist 100+ specifically over and over... would you still say I shouldn’t worry since I used that one a lot for years? Many times :( thank you so much for the response by the way! I’ve been so anxious I can’t sleep.
I'm so glad you did this video, I was actually about to comment on one of your other videos asking you for your view on valisure. I've been seeing all over my feed from Fox to CNN to bloggers to instagram fear mongering.
Now I'll be able to forward this videos to my friends who are unaware and don't want to research, product waste is already a problem!
The fearmongering has been intense! 😩
When Michelle just goes “like, subscribe, **nerdification** bell, you know the drill” 😂😂👌🏼*edit: nerdification as suggested haha
*nerdification bell 😄
Next video is definitely not about sunscreen. Famous last words 😅
I’ve guaranteed a new sunscreen drama with that 😬😬😬
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience girl, sunscreen videos are awesome. We’re never tired!!
Don't worry Michelle you're our favourite sunscreen propagandist. I actually, after 2 years of watching your videos, finally took the plunge and bought some beginner skincare stuff. Previously I would just be not moisturising and I would wash my face in the shower. But I got fed up of feeling like beige sugar paper. I also happened to buy the bondi sands sunscreen in this video (the scented body version since I thought it was light enough to go on my face)
It does surprise me that they are not make clickbait articles about spray sunscreens being flammable.
there are only few people i trust here in youtube and michelle's like UP THERE
I’ve been waiting for you to weigh in on this!
my favorite "Serial sunscreen video maker" !!!!!!! Keep at it.
That dog analogy had me dying 😂😂😂
We somehow need to get every single person in the world to watch your videos!! This explanation is brilliant, & makes it so very clear yet again that we need to look at the details not the headlines!
lesson: do not punch dogs.
also lesson: do not flip off dogs, too.
I’ll always watch your sunscreen vids, Michelle! Keep ‘me coming!
The editing is ON POINT today! I lost it at the dog punching bit
Thank you! It took me half an hour but it was worth it 🥲
Thank you for making this video! Haven't even watched it yet, but you're my go to for all my sunscreen education and related scandals! 🙌
Thank you! I was worried but skeptical at the same time too and didn’t know where to start
Exactly the science I waiting to hear on this!! 🙌
This video is very important as is all your videos. Thank you for keeping us well informed
I love your sunscreen videos and always welcome them! 😅😅 I was chatting about this with a coworker earlier today, so it was nice to see you clear a few things up on the subject ☀
i am really glad to see scientist -as a scientist- in skincare community rather than fearmongers!
I love all your sunscreen videos Michelle!
Have been waiting for you video on the above topic. The only valid /trustworthy content on sunscreen.
Thank you for all the hard work you do - I love your channel.
SCIENS!!
My favorite place to come to fuse science and skincare! Thank you!
This was the video I’ve been waiting for
I hope you didn't mean it when you said you wouldn't make any more sunscreen videos. It's kinda what I'm here for. And anything else you put out, thank you!
Thanks for the clarification. I had been using a contaminated batch so really needed someone to put the exposure risk in context. I hope there will be an investigation into the supply chain since most probably other types of products are also contaminated.
Yess I’ve been waiting for this video, ty!
Your analogies give me life.
Excellent job making this topic much clearer to understand. Thank you.
Thanks for the information 😊. I saw this benzine news floating around though I didn't put much focus on it for sun protection is more important to me. I hope some people can now rest easy putting on their sunscreen again.
This was so helpful. Thank you for your clear information.
I love your sunscreen vids, please don't stop them!
I’m so happy that I found your channel 💗 because here in Russia we don’t have someone who gonna explain all this information! Thank you Michelle!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS!! I was going to ask for it
Thank you for these clarifications.
You the best! I was waiting for your video about benzene since this whole thing blew up in Social Media! thanks for logical, scientific explanation
Haha!! No, not, ever, never gonna post about sunscreens again...
How dare you! We need & love your scientific sunscreen rants Michelle!!
🙌🏻💜🙌🏻💜🙌🏻💜🙌🏻💜🙌🏻
You are so amazing! Fantastic A+ video!!
I’ve been waiting for this video!
Thank you for this useful video!
I work with analytical instruments. GC methods for benzene is hard. If one is not careful, the benzene in surrounding environment can really skew results. Did the experiment do multiple samples and what is the precision of the results?
Not very precise - the % standard deviation they list for the higher ppm products is almost all single digit, but with lower concentrations it gets up to double digits (there’s even one at 73%). They tested at least 3 samples from each product where benzene was detected. The sampling method is also a bit weird, it isn’t very detailed but it sounds like they lined up the hole of the spray and squirted into the vial…
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience im sorry but 73 PERCENT!?!?!? AAAAAA
I love you debunking videos!!!
Love your content! I wonder if you’d consider avoiding putting your graphics / titles in the lower 1/5th of the screen, since that’s where the closed captions show up?
Btw, You can never make too many sunscreen videos! 👏🏼
Ugh this is one of the things I forgot half the time! Thanks for the reminder >.
I like your sunscreen videos, dont stop :)
Excited to be this early to one of your videos omg!
I have some sunscreens that were tested positive for benzene in this valisure thing, thanks for making a vid on it.
very informative!
I know your video about the topic will answer it all!
Thank you for doing this video
I love your channel so much. You have a fantastic personality. 🐈🐾🌻💛
Have been wondering about this!
Please do a video on asbestos in makeup products containing talc! I'm very curious of the actual risk.
This is just a brief overview but I hope this helps! Talc itself is not the issue. However, when mining for talc, talc is often found in the same areas as asbestos - hence talc can be cross contaminated with asbestos. With that being said, the FDA requires products that have a high probability of cross contamination with known carcinogens (e.g. talc) to report statistics on their products. The issue with the Johnson & Johnson baby powder litigation is that Johnson & Johnson KNEW their mined talc contained high levels of asbestos, but covered it up and didn’t report it/hid the results from the FDA and refused to recall the potentially contaminated products off the market. In all, talc is safe to use IF the companies mining the talc are faithfully adhering to the reporting procedures pursuant to FDA policy/ensuring their talc products do not have high levels of asbestos
@@kirag9509 thanks for that! I didn't realize it was kind of like a DuPont chemicals situation. The internet bubble kept saying talc was bad and I was looking for more information on that too.
I used 6 cans of the recalled Neutrogena sunscreens while on vacation to Southern California June/July on all my kids and family 🧐 thank you so much for putting this out! Sending so much love to you for the breakdown ❤️
Thank you for your videos! They are so helpful. When you have the chance can you discuss claims of heavy meals in lipstick which i would assume doesnt leave the body?
You know it’s gonna be a good day when Michelle uploads a video 💜
Finally... thanks gurl!
Thanks for this. I have a beautycounter friend who pushes the typical claim that any sunscreen not made out of zinc is deadly. She posted about the recent recall and to be honest it did get me nervous since my family and I just finished a bottle of one of the ones that are being recalled. Saw your video and now I’m calm.
Finally!!!! I was waiting for ur oponion
Youre so awesome. Thank you!! 😎
Lady Gaga ≠ Galileo
You say it so nonchalantly. 😹 I get way too much joy from weird analogies that just make things make sense - especially when they’re only absurd to point out how equally ridiculous a common misconception is.
Michelle banging down a pot and setting sunscreen on fire is honestly such a mood
Thank you for that. Now I have something to show to people instead of trying to explain myself
Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your videos. Would you please consider doing one about hyaluronic acid? I saw one from pillow talk and I am very confused about this acid. Thank you!
Terrific video Michelle! 😊👍🏼
Some people just LOVE drama. Any excuse to freak out and share how “anxious” they are.
When a very popular RUclipsr shared her own (excellent) video on this benzene contamination the other day, the number of comments from people saying things like
“I’m just SO devastated by this! I feel personally betrayed by [insert sunscreen manufacturer’s name] After all, we’re supposed to be able to trust trust these companies, right?”
“The only safe thing to do now is to not wear sunscreen AT ALL. I’m going to have to wear a UPF face shield 😩”
“Gwyneth was right!! How many other deadly chemicals are we slathering ourselves in?”
“Cosmetic companies are doing this *deliberately* because they’re owned by big pharma, who want to make us sick so they can sell us more medications to keep us sick and reliant upon their medications”
🙄
And on and on, ad nauseam.
Being concerned is understandable, especially when we read alarming headlines. But wilful hysteria is another thing. It’s irritating and irresponsible.
Aaanyway, have a great Sunday!
Chaq x
This is very useful. It would be really great if you can talk about all the other sunscreens filters (such as homosalate etc.) that are rarely mentioned. Most videos on RUclips focus on avobenzone, oxybenzone, and zinc oxide. I'm pretty curious on your opinions on the other commonly used UV filters. Thanks:) 👍
Ughghgh I can't believe people are still on the "no nasties" train. I'm so sick of it, like are we THERE yet??? Can we get out of the car now? Please?
Can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a video on how long mineral sunscreen is effective on the face? This whole "apply every 2 hours" even when working at a desk (not next to a window) situation seems so extreme. Is there a way to INVESTIGATE how effective a sunscreen still is after 8 hours of normal (non-active) wear? Thank you so much!
She has a detailed video on the topic , do we need sunscreen indoors ..
Hi Michelle, could you make a video about PFAs in cosmetics and beauty products? Not many people are talking about the recent articles about this and I'd like to hear what you think of it.
Sunscreen is very important, so volume is very important. Thank you
Thank you for helping me not freak out.
Thank you sooooo much❤️
Please do a video on large pores and how to minimize
Thank you!
Thanks lab muffin beauty!
Michelle: Next video is definitely not sunscreen.
Me: aww :(
Thank you for this video 💕💕I was freaking out because I used neutrogenas sunscreen for almost 6 months
Thank you!!!
You deserve as many subscribers as the big players in the skinfluencer world Michelle
Have you covered the topic of minerals in make up degrading avobenzone? That’s the one thing holding me back from using a chemical as my daily spf.
If these companies want to sell us "clean" products why do they add benzene or lead in the products... this issue has gone from "not tested on animals" to toxic ingredients... WHY?
Tiny harmless amounts of chemicals are everywhere, we’ve mostly just gotten much better at detecting them - for example, you have around 20 micrograms of uranium in your body right now
"Smoking one cigarette when you were 16" Michelle do NOT call me out like this😂
But you are our Queen of fact and myths about sunscreen!!! We need to produce those videos :D
Hi Michelle, Aussie viewer here! Can you comment on the dermaveen SPF 50+? TY!
