Olaya Sánchez Actually chemical sunscreens can be better than physical, because of the how European chemical sunscreens can reach such high UVA protection ex. Bioderma, P20, Avene.
Remember: the Environmental Footprint (or under other names) was designed by industry to make environmental protection an individual thing; you personally will never reuse enough to make a difference. 100 people reducing won’t make a difference-not while industry goes on destroying and polluting. A mere 100 companies have contributed to 71% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Not to mention industrial factors like chemical pollution, deforestation/habitat loss, water waste, etc. All the CEOs, politicians, World Bank officials know this too. They talk about it, and talk about how they really don’t care about the planet or people, as long as they can make money. Right now, the wealthiest are planning for how they are going to live and maintain their wealth when climate change really becomes catastrophic and we lose access to secure water etc. They know they made this problem and continue to make it worse, and just want to find ways they can stay on top when their actions kill everything.
I feel that UV protection focus too much on SPF, that is UVB rays protection, but not so much on UVA. In the long run UVA can cause serious damage to the skin too but in some countries UVA protection factors are not as highly publicized as SPF. Could you please share some tips of what to look for in a sunscreen in order to get protection for both UVB and UVA rays? Also thanks for talking about the “physical “ vs “chemical” sunscreen debate. I love my chemical sunscreen I can use te proper amount without getting a white cast nor the pasty feeling
providence51 Zinc oxide can get to PA++++ when the percentage is %20 which is rare in mineral sunscreen, plus it will be probably have a lot of white cast.
European sunscreens with SPF 50+ and UVA in a circle If you dont wanna consider so many sunscreen-related things. Make sure that you read reviews about how good they are at film forming and water resistance.
I'm autistic and really sensitive to textures on my skin, to the extent that when my parents would put greasy sunscreen on me I would subconsciously scratch it off to stop the feeling. They always claimed that 'all sunscreens feel like that' but I've found as an adult that there are plenty which are quick-drying and as a result don't leave the greasy feel. Not sure if that's a common myth, but I'd be curious as to where the belief comes from.
@@LupaDracolis thank you for the recommendation, as an autistic person in a similar situation, I've said "I'd literally rather 💀 of skin cancer than feel sunscreen on my face ever again" 😅😅 excited to try this
Fantastic video. One comment on the moisturizer with SPF vs dedicated sunscreen: I agree they are really the same type of product but I have found that most dedicated sunscreens aren’t moisturizing enough for my skin and most moisturizers with sunscreen have enough emollient/occlusive properties that I can’t manage to actually use enough of it before it feels too gloopy to get the full SPF on the label. So I’ve always used a dedicated SPF after my moisturizer. It’s a myth yes - but using just a moisturizer with sunscreen will only work if you are actually doing it correctly.
Awesome video Michelle. Thank you for sharing that on the coral reefs. I don't think that anyone had bothered to question this piece of information before spreading the coral reef propaganda. Thank you for clearing this up!
Yes please, do the technical hardcore video!!!!!!! Also, have you heard about antioxidants overestimating the spf/uvapf values.? Something around the lines that antioxidants will mask the markers of uv damage providing the appearance of a higher protection factor that the actual value.

Hey! I looove you’re videos, I’m studying chemistry and in the future I want to work in research and development of cosmetics! Please do a more nerdy video about sunscreens 🥰
I slather sunscreen on for sure. My skin hates all chemical filters (even European ones), so I stick to high zinc sunscreens. There are tinted options available as well as ones that don’t have a noticeable white cast, even with through application.
@@bottlefly5124 I have found that most Zinc sunscreens are drying, but Biossance Zinc sunscreen seems be very moisturizing, with CoTZ tinted face moisture coming in second. I typically use grape water, diluted USP glycerin, squalane oil, then seal it all in with vaseline.
Is it true that you shouldn’t use AHAs if you are POC? I have seen a doctor suggested not to use glycolic acid at all cost if you have a darker skin tone.
Not at all! Leave-on strength products are very unlikely to cause pigmentation if you don't overuse it and you wear sunscreen, and glycolic peels are used very effectively by professionals to treat POC.
Anyone with a higher Fitzpatrick skin type (III or above) should be careful with anything that causes inflammation due to the risk of developing pigmentation. A leave on strength AHA in most cases, shouldn't cause excessive inflammation however, as you mentioned, when it is overused it can cause a state of inflammation, heightened immune function (in the skin) and a degredation of the skin barrier. Anything that harms the skin barrier can potentially cause inflammation within the skin. I agree with you Michelle, I just think that higher Fitzpatrick skins should be very careful with anything that could potentially create heat and inflammation within their skin. And most importantly, not only POC but anyone who uses skincsre should be very careful with exfoliation in general. It can be a very damaging practice if misused. I have found that when a skin is healthy and balanced, exfoliation is unnecessary because their skin is desquamating at a normal rate and the formation of corneocytes is much more cohesive resulting in a smoother skin. Which in turn, hardly needs to be exfolaiated!
How do I know how effective the UVA protection is in an American chemical sunscreen? I have been choosing mineral because they are supposed to have better UVA protection.
It's a crapshoot. US Avobenzone sunscreens actually have a higher UVAPF than mineral sunscreens. But avobenzone is not very stable when exposed to the sun. So does it last in average longer than mineral sunscreens? We just don't know, but some third party testing by Consumer Reports suggests they do. Neutrogena and LRP sunscreens are probably the best US sunscreens claiming UVAPFA of 31 and 28 respectively. How well they hold off after 2 hours in the sun is unknown.
Really I would suggest looking into European, Korean and Japanese sunscreen for daily use. They are so much better in formulations and actually have a rating for UVA = PA+ (PA+ is the least UVA protection and PA++++ has the most) Though I not for sure about the actual percentage of difference. Most of the sunscreen can easily be found on Amazon. Klairs sunscreen, Biore water essence sunscreen and drunken elephant are great options to start looking at.
I been think lately (because a use a quemical sunscreen that has alcohol, but has a ppd of 61) that not only most of this sunscreens have on their own moisturizing ingredients, but you also generally apply them over layers of skincare underneath, so the amount of alcohol that actually disrupt that barrier must be minimal, and then the alcohol easily evaporates from the formulation. So probably there's still no reason to fear alcohol in sunscreens. Plus your last video on alcohol confirms that there're minimal to almost no changes when applied directly to the skin and in higher percentages. 🤗🤗🤗 love your videos. Greetings from Chile. 🤩
@@onyxsoul6039 of course, it's the "ISDIN FotoUltra 100 spot prevent 50+" It does give you a white cast (nothing extreme like a mineral sunscreen does), but for the protection is worth it.
Hi Michelle! I wear a lot of sunscreen daily. I choose to wear chemical sunscreen that includes newer filler. I like the functionality of a chemical sunscreen but for some reason my skin get Irritated from it. I think it might be because I have super sensitive skin. Can you please explain why chemical sunscreen cause skin sensitivity? What should I look for if I still want to continues using chemical sunscreen? Love your videos!! Your content is informative!! i always breakout when I wear chemical sunscreens. If I wear them repeatably from a to day basis and if I reapply them throughout the day the breakouts get worse even if they are suppose to be non-comedogenic. And then physical sunscreens give me the horrible white cast even the ones that claim they are "invisible or sink-in", so I'm sol.
Wow ty ! I’ve been hearing from almost every youtuber about how using chemical sunscreen is so bad for the reefs. This info will definitely open up my choices now.
I don't know if anyone else hears this, or if it's intentional, but I always think that when you say, "notification bell," that you're making a pun and actually saying, "nerdification bell." As a current microbiology major, and a skincare nerd, I think it's just what I want to hear! Anyway, thanks for being awesome and brilliant!
Thank you so much for such a good vedio...i am continuously listening about organic uv filters can be absorbed into our body and accumulates in our bloodstream if being used overtime...is it another myth ?
Brilliant! Can you add other common myths to your next sunscreen myth video? 1) chemical sunscreen needs to be applied first in order to absorbed into skin- basically, no moisturizer or thick cream beforehand which provides a barrier. True?? 2) chemical sunscreen won’t work on top of physical sunscreen because physical sunscreen provides a barrier so chemical sunscreen would not be absorbed into skin. I usually put on tinted physical sunscreen in the daytime when going to work, but i reapply with chemical sunscreen when walking my little puppy after work. Wondering if my current sunscreen methodology needs to be revised. Thank you!
You are so awesome, I love your videos!!! I wish more people would watch you, to really understand the science behind skincare and the marketing techniques as well. I truly believe knowledge is power, thank you for providing understandable information for complicated scientific concepts.
Hi Michelle, are you able to do a video also discussing whether other chemicals in sunscreen (such as oxybenzone & homosalate) are safe to use, please? I have been seeing a lot of websites saying these are potential hormone disrupters & possible allergens but I don’t know how reliable they are because they all push the reef safety issue with oxybenzone. I am very sensitive to some sunscreens (I have a hives like reaction to some & some others cause flare ups of perioral dermatitis - Nivea sunscreens, Olay & Aveeno in particular), so I am on the hunt for a sunscreen that is very effective but that hopefully won’t cause a reaction. Thank you!!
“Government policy isn’t always based on good science.” Quote of the day! And I would add that if policy does happen to be based on good science, it’s because it benefits big business in some way. My question about sunscreens is regarding absorption in the body of chemical sunscreen ingredients. I’ve seen mineral sunscreens recommended as safer.
From another science nerd, please make that in depth sunscreen UV absorption video! Edit: I just want to add now that I finished the video, keep up with all this awesomeness, Michelle. This information is very helpful and important. Thank you. The segment about coral reefs hit hard.
Hi Lab Muffin do you have or could you do a video on Dead Sea Mud/ Dead Sea Mineral skincare products? I was wondering how dead sea mud can be especially beneficial for dry skin types. Considering the ph of dead sea mud, how does it work to help dry skin? Also, I was wondering if using dead sea mud leave on products would 'throw off' the ph of your skin?
Loved the video, thank you for all the useful informaton. It would be amazing if you could do the technical nerdy video :) Please also include an explanation why chemical and mineral sunscreens look so different under the uv camera.
When discussing alcohol in skincare products, isn’t it important to differentiate between the different types of alcohol rather than discuss alcohol as a broad, umbrella term? Some alcohols (to my knowledge) are moisturizing, while some can be drying and irritating (especially for dry or eczema prone skin). I would love to see more discussion about this 🙂 Btw- you and Dr. Dray are my skincare saviors!
Thank you for addressing the coral reef myths. I wasn’t sure about that one and was still feeling guilty about spf even though I don’t live near any coral reefs.
Great video as always containing valuable information. Here in Brazil, products labeled as sunscreens must have at least 1/3 PPD/UVA of the SPF, just like European regulations, but this rule doesn't apply to products labeled as SPF moisturizers, these products don't have to meet the 1/3 PPD/UVA requirement.
Hi Michelle, I have a question where if citrus oils are In makeup / sunscreens or creams can they cause phototoxic reaction! It cc cream has a few of these in and I worry about the photoxic effect ! As it is classed us protection aswell is t it counterintuitive. Or is it all about dose and that they are diluted ?
Thank you for the video. I have very sensitive skin, and I usually get burns in a minutes. My boyfriend always say that you need to get burns once in a summer, and your skin get used to UV radiation. I know that it is a myth, but still it is very popular idea, where I live.
Can you combine an organic and inorganic sunscreen on your face? I have a 70 “chemical” sunscreen and a 50 “physical” sunscreen that I mix together every morning because I find the texture it creates is perfect for my skin. However I’ve always wondered if they somehow counteract each other or something and I haven’t found an answer online
A dermatologist I randomly saw on Instagram wrote a post stating that if one wants to prevent sun-induced aging, they should use sunscreen at any time of the day when the sun is on the sky (basically from 6 a. m. to 22 a. m. in the summer). Is it really so? Sometimes I work the whole day at home-office and only go outside around 18:30 when the UV index is less that 2. Do I really need to apply sunscreen in this situation?
Could you please make a video about soap making? Like what preservatives should be use on it? I see a lot of youtube tutorials but most of them are just melting the soap into water. I would like to know more from a professional chemist.
Could you do a myth buster on PEGs and polyethylene? It seems like many cleansing balms contain them and people automatically assume they are plastics destroying the oceans but I've seen different perspectives so I'd love to hear your take!
Hi Michelle! Can you please make a video on how sunscreen (both organic and inorganic) prevent hyperpigmentation? I've heard that physical sunscreen works better than chemical sunscreen in this area, but since both absorb UV, how does it prevent excess melanin production? Thank you!
They work the same way, higher SPF and UVAPF sunscreens will prevent hyperpigmentation better regardless of whether they're physical or chemical (chemical can get higher UVAPFs though).
Wow, this is a game-changer!! I thought physical sunscreens were better for preventing hyperpigmentation (Dr Rattan follower!) so have been avoiding chemical sunscreens like the plague and living with the dreaded white-cast.😬😢😭 Knowing I can wear a chemical sunscreen to get the same results, BUT with no white-cast, is amazing! 😮🤔😲 Woo Hoo! 😁🥳🤪 THANKS FOR BUSTING THAT MYTH MICHELLE!! 💛💚💙🤗💜💗🧡

Right now, the wealthiest are planning for how they are going to live and maintain their wealth when climate change really becomes catastrophic and we lose access to secure water etc. They know they made this problem and continue to make it worse, and just want to find ways they can stay on top when their actions kill everything.
Very informative- thank you for nerdifying us, Michelle! I definitely had heard “experts” push some of these myths as truth.
Look for sunscreen with zinc oxide, the label broad spectrum, and the PA ++++ relates to uva.
providence51 Zinc oxide can get to PA++++ when the percentage is %20 which is rare in mineral sunscreen, plus it will be probably have a lot of white cast.
she breaks down all sunscreen filters in her sunscreen guide including what each of them protect against :)
European sunscreens with SPF 50+ and UVA in a circle If you dont wanna consider so many sunscreen-related things. Make sure that you read reviews about how good they are at film forming and water resistance.
I just think it's funny how a tan is considered as healthy when it is literally our cells dying 💀💀💀💀
Do you have any affordable recommendations? :)
@@graceelizabeth8284 Yes! Garnier Ambre Solaire Dry Mist is the best one I've found so far.
@@LupaDracolis thank you for the recommendation, as an autistic person in a similar situation, I've said "I'd literally rather 💀 of skin cancer than feel sunscreen on my face ever again" 😅😅 excited to try this
i HATE those greasy sunscreens and i used to get sunburned so much bc i hated purring it on
Fantastic video.
I want the technical explanation of organic vs. inorganic!!!! I love these types of videos.
Thank you so much for these! I have lupus so I've always had to be really diligent with my sun screen, and I started seeing all the "chemical" and "physical labels and I got so confused
Thank you so much Lab Muffin Beauty Science! You have helped me so much. I’ve been pretty unhappy wearing reef-safe sunscreens and haven’t found one I liked too much. But now that I understand it’s not an issue, I will gladly look for new options. You are amazing ❤️
I LOVE that you keep the science and the truth coming, no matter how idiotic marketing gets!
This is prolly my fav topic when you talk about suncreen myths because it's so important to know how sunscreen truly works and how much to put on. Thanks again Michelle for educating us! You are one of my inspiration to become a chemist one day! We love you!❤
My skin is dry how do I avoid the stretchy feeling ? Do you prep like heaps under it?
@@bottlefly5124 I have found that most Zinc sunscreens are drying, but Biossance Zinc sunscreen seems be very moisturizing, with CoTZ tinted face moisture coming in second. I typically use grape water, diluted USP glycerin, squalane oil, then seal it all in with vaseline.
Thank you so much for making this video! Plz do the super detailed version that you mentioned. I feel like it would also be really helpful.
sadly many youtube influencers don't have such knowledge. could you please talk about myths of essential oil?
Sadly many pretend that they do.
Please make a elaborate video on how physical and chemical sunscreen works. Thanks.
You are teaching me so much! Thank you so much Michelle!
Thanks a lot for confirming that
Anyone with a higher Fitzpatrick skin type (III or above) should be careful with anything that causes inflammation due to the risk of developing pigmentation.
Very informative thank you for your hard work ♥️
Yay I'm glad you liked it! 😊
How do I know how effective the UVA protection is in an American chemical sunscreen? I have been choosing mineral because they are supposed to have better UVA protection.
Probably best to assume it isn’t that effective and try to order one from overseas
Ask the brand about UVAPF of the sunscreen you are getting your eyes on.
Justprettymakeup Elta and some other US brands do PA ratings (I think all of Elta’s are PA+++)
Thank you so much for this video! Your SPF videos are always so informative!!
I really appreciate that bit about the coral reefs. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, would you mind naming the sunscreen? I am always on the lookout for a product with so high uva protection levels. 😉
@@onyxsoul6039 of course, it's the "ISDIN FotoUltra 100 spot prevent 50+"
It does give you a white cast (nothing extreme like a mineral sunscreen does), but for the protection is worth it.
@@charlyjgm thank you!!
I would love to see the super nerdy video! Thank you for working so hard!
Thank you 🙏
Anne
i always breakout when I wear chemical sunscreens.
No it's not a myth they do get into the blood! Just some people don't think that means it harms you.
There’s no evidence that they accumulate over time or that they are harmful at all, but it’s true that they have been detected in the blood
Pretty much all cosmetics get absorbed in the blood
The evidence says its a potential hormonal disruptor such as thyroid and sexual function and reproduction etc.
Figo Faaig scary stuff if true
Hands down my favourite skincare channel on RUclips
Love this lipstick colour on you Michelle! Very flattering :)
Please do a video on dosing serums and how the dose impacts the amount of active ingredients.
Thank you for the knowledge and light you bring in our lives! Very nice video! Also you have a nice hair!
Thank you!!
Honestly why go to any other skincare channel? You're the best!!!
Can I use Niacinamide if my skin barrier is damaged?
Yeah definitely, niacinamide actually helps to restore your skin barries, also calms down irritations.
Carlos Guajardo thank you :)
GIVE US THE NERDY VIDEO!! lol I would love an in depth explanation of how sunscreen works❤️❤️
I really like your myth busting vedios 😍.
And please make vedio on how sunscreen works 🥰.
I would love to see a more technical video on sunscreen!!
Nerdy explanation, please! TY for this informative video. 😊
Thank you! The knowledge you share literally changes live and habits
Can you please make a dedicated video on the best ways and ingredients to get the maximum protection from UVA aging
From another science nerd, please make that in depth sunscreen UV absorption video!
Edit: I just want to add now that I finished the video, keep up with all this awesomeness, Michelle. This information is very helpful and important. Thank you. The segment about coral reefs hit hard.
2:07 Tinosorb A2B also reflects some UV not only Tinosorb M (it is also suspended as a particle)
Yes pls to nerdy technical dive into uv filters! Upper level chem major here, in school hoping to study sunscreens.
I would love to see more discussion about this 🙂
Btw- you and Dr. Dray are my skincare saviors!
I'm talking about the so-called irritating, drying alcohols here 😉
Thank you about talking about coral bleaching. Now I know better and you made me that much smarter.
Great video!, I heard these myths alot. I would also love the super nerdy video about how excited electrons release their energy :)
Yeah for atomic electron transitions! I got very excited because I didn’t know this occurred with sunscreens.
Thank you for addressing the coral reef myths. I wasn’t sure about that one and was still feeling guilty about spf even though I don’t live near any coral reefs.
Love all the education. Thanks for posting.
Please do a more technical video on how sunscreen chemicals work! I'm a total geek for the science behind the technology!
during this quarantine i’ve been getting more and more into skincare. thanks so much for this video, it’s interesting how these are still repeated
What are your thoughts on hydroquinone please?
Can we mix or lyer mineral and organic chemical sunscreens? How? Thanks
Another fabulous AAA plus Myth Busting episode. Really great unravelling. I also loved the NBN allusion that snuck in there. As always thank you.
Could you please make a video about soap making? Like what preservatives should be use on it? I see a lot of youtube tutorials but most of them are just melting the soap into water. I would like to know more from a professional chemist.
Michelle :) Would you make a video on microcurrent technology & home device? Thank you!!!
Yes but most chemical sunscreens in america are garbage. The chemical sunscreens overseas are the far better ones and US doesnt allow those specific ingredients unfortunately.
Seek Korean sunscreen like Klairs UV Essence Sunscreen, Purito Centella Sunscreen, etc.
