Kai'sa is literally a walking metaphor for Runeterra's conflict with the Void: A bunch of neat ideas that never go anywhere because Riot only progresses narratives when they can tie some sexy new champion or skin to them.

@@professionalgiraffe The whole ruination/sentinals of light event feels to me like it didn’t really do anything except sold skins, which obviously has nothing to do with lore. Viego just kinda appeared, did some bad guy things, got sealed away, those who got ruined just turned back to normal anyway and it’s not like he’s gonna leave any political or mental impact on the world. He feels like a plot device villain for the good guys to beat up more than anything, which sucks since he had a great story and lot of potential

@@albertlofling7310 I mean, Jinx IS the first real deviation from the norm of League women, so it makes sense, even though she just has smaller breasts. Her tattoos add a lot of personality, same with Akali imo (why Skyen also gave a lot of praise for her redesign, so maybe he's into tattoos too?)
I think Riot tried to make their own version of Samus Aran, but they couldn't figure out what makes Samus' character so good.
Funny thing is, if Samus wasn't unmasked. People can't tell if she's a woman, due to her armour.

It's really portrayed in Metroid prime 3, where there's a spaceship full of stocky giant armored humans, and Samus is standing head and shoulders over them.

Kaisa wearing makeup could've actually worked if her design was any way competent - a desperate attempt by her to look more human and "fit in", have it be a little messy and wrong, trying to cling onto SOMETHING human. Or have it be immaculate because she spends so much time learning because it's her only way of expressing her humanity.
Only works if they give a single shit about her design, you can't try and have her desperate to be human while looking completely human and normal 🙃

Also, she's supposed to be Shuriman, but she looks British and speaks with a british accent. Shurima (like all of the regions) doesn't have too much of an accent across all of it's characters but come on, at least make her look like she's Shuriman.
It's a south african accent tbf, which would be more fitting. As for looking british, she just looks causcasian, which is also common in SA. The design still sucks but this ain't it.
I don’t have a problem with her being pale in a sickly-type way, I mean how often does she realistically see the sun? But at least give her non-Caucasian features to go along with it. Also to your “British” point, at the above commenter pointed out it’s a South African accent, and they make even more reference to her being South African in K/DA, such as her speaking Afrikaans, she’s just a _white, Dutch_ South African, so yeah....
I dont think her look is more European than middle eastern, she isn’t too far off Samira. Samira has more Brown skin but KaiSa probably isn’t out in the Sun that often.
Also Riot has a Strange relation to accents, it really doesn’t make much sense to be fair. For example lets compare Viktor, Jayce and Caitlyn. Caitlyn has a distinct British accent while Jayce has an American one, even tho they are literally from the same city. It gets even stranger that Viktor has a russian accent, even tho no other champs in that region has that accent.

Accents are all over the place in Runeterra, isn't even worth it to try to make sense of it. Pantheon has a thick Greek accent, while Diana and Leona don't, despite being from the same region. Fiora and her family have a French accent for no discernible reason, while the rest of the demacians don't. Braum has a Russian accent, and the rest of the freljordians don't.

@@NeverWhorget I think it is more likely the designers are trying to compress her model to the standard female body they use.
You can see in Female Champions they try to compress their body even when tehy have armour on them or put armour that doesn't cover the the form.
Or if they decided to make it that the costume eats her she just looks like she has robot arms and I can't remember voice lines where she or someone else remarks on it.

@@georgesdragon8722 To put it simply, Viego as he is written and designed now, is the wrong design for his current role in Runeterra. His release cinematic sets him up as one of the biggest bads in the realm, it showed him laying siege to basically the entire planet, and yet he lacks the aura of a villain, be it a pure evil villain feel or a sympathetic villain feel. In edition, Viego as he is now leaves some pretty big holes in the lore, such as where the black mist came from, how he figured out how to command the black mist, and why he attacked places across the world with the black mist. Yeah he wants his wife back, but what does invasion and destruction of the living world have to do with bringing back his wife? On top of that Viego is so angry all the time, even when talking about his "beloved" wife, that I don't buy the idea that he loves her and would go THIS FAR to bring her back. He's a child throwing a tantrum over his favorite toy being broken which doesn't fit the fact that he is a king who's obsession with overcoming death, defying all natural laws to do so, brought ruin to all those around him.
In summery, Viego is a toxic piss baby. That is what he is designed to be and he does that very well, but the toxic piss baby archetype you see in bad romance novels and what the ruined king was set up to be throughout years of lore and teasing are incompatible.
Also, this is unrelated to his character design but it is something I still want to complain about: Viego's gameplay doesn't fit with what he is, both in terms of him being the ruined king and him being an obsessive toxic piss baby. The possession of the fallen for your own gain is more of a manipulator's thing, someone that sees the value in every enemy they fight and knows how to take advantage of that value to fight others. Viego as he is now is an egotist who sees everyone as beneath him, so why have his gameplay revolve around a (not at all functioning) gimmick (that totally breaks the game in terms of future designs and balancing) where he brings himself down to the level of those he sees as beneath him?

@@lunaticbaku7097 Sorry for replying so late to this comment and i have to say, I agree with everything you said! he is definitely not what I or anyone else expected from the ruined king, portrayed as the ultimate evil that rules over the black mist and faces everything in it's way head-on. He IS a "toxic piss baby" as you described him, perfectly that is, and plays the role of an assassin who likes to sneakily oneshot people rather than overwhelm them with the cheer power he posesses which in my opinion would have been the way better way for his design? Of course, it would be the typical stereotype of the arch nemesis who has been used in many different ways already (Aku in Samurai Jack, Lich in Adventure time, the other lich king in WoW (at least as far as I know, he does fit that archetype of an "evil overlord"), Sauron in Lord of the Rings etc), but that is the image almost everyone had in his mind when imagining the ruined king. I assume they wanted to "challange the stereotype rather than embracing it" as Skyen would probably have said it, but the spoiled brat we have now was definitely not the right choice.
To adress the plotholes: I am not sure if we should already discuss the unexplained stuff because we are at the very start of the ruined king storyline, which is a longer chain of events that will ultimately lead to the fight against the ruined king and (hopefully) explaining all the missing holes along the way. So yes, they did leave a lot of stuff open and questions unanswered, but i am bold enough to assume Riot will explain all of it at some point.
As i said earlier, i agree on your view on Viego's gameplay: it doesn't really fit. I personally would have loved something like Swain or nasus: a slow walking behemoth that orders others to do stuff for him or, if necessary, does the job himself and annihilates his enemies if they dare to stand in his way. Or, if we keep the playboy model aspect, at least puts an armor on to charge into battle and release his anger by brutally massacring his foes rather than beating up people with a slightly too large stick whilst dressed like a biker that forgot to put on a shirt "on accident".

Another thing they could have done with Viego is to play up the tragedy of his lose. They could have made him a classical greek tragic hero: a man born of nobility with many great aspects to him, but ultimately brought down by one tragic character flaw. Imagine if it wasn't an assassins blade that killed his wife, but a natural disease that no doctor could stop? And Viego went on many bloody campaigns in search of a way to give his wife at least one more day to enjoy the pleasures of life? Imagine a Viego who wanted total world domination so he could rewrite the natural laws and grant the blessing of undeath to all, so that no one has to ever say goodbye again. A respectable man with respectable goals, yet he brings ruin to all around him all because he can't except the fact that sometimes people are taken too soon.
As for gameplay, I feel making him a mobile fighter would be a good way to separate him from the other resident dark lord, Mordekiser. Plus it would help this supposed jungler to actually do his job. Personally, I think it would be cool if the mist had more oomph to it. Make it something that enemies fear to step into. like is enemies in the mist took extra damage based on max health or current health of something. as long as enemies dread stepping into the mist as much as the people of runeterra fear the mist. And, since I'm spewing ideas that may never be noticed by anyone outside this comment section, why not make it so that the mist was EVERYWHERE! Like imagine if Viego being on the rift caused the harrowing to roll up into the game. Like the shadow Isles are invading the rift. I have no idea how this would work or be balanced, but it's more "ruined king" than what we got :P

Also, let me just say that I like the way you think good sir. I am also an admirer of more "unique" abilities. (The next part is a bit unrelated to Viego but hopefully still fun to read)
For example, I made another youtube comment talking about how another interpretation on Aurelion Sol could look like, because I believe his current design doesn't really fit in the game. Yes, the idea of a celestial star-dragon-god-thing is one of the best I have seen, but why is all he does just swirling around with stars, moving stars and sometimes knocking back enemies? I don't like the idea itself, i just don't think it fits him. If he IS a huge allmighty star-dragon-god-thing, he should FEEL like one. His character model would just be an "avatar" he chose worthy of using on the mortal realm and his ultimate makes him vanish from the battlefield, ascending to the skies right towards the players camera and makes him be able to, let's say: casting huge spells (think of meteor showers, huge rell-like ultimates or a collapsing star that needs a long time to finally im-/explode, but is a hazard towards the enemies but also your team, which would make it a very unique zoning tool and gives Asol that "I don't care about any of you mortals" feeling). Plus, the animation of him ascending towards your camera can underline his power even more! He would take the place of the summoner, showing off his true might, maybe saying something sassy like "scoot over, summoner, now it's MY turn!" or "Did you really think you are the only one that likes looking down on others?" and also showing his hands on the left and right side to make it really feel like you are in his POV now.
So yes, as you can see i am a huge fan of big ultimates or similar stuff and agree on the craziness of flooding the rift with mist. Viego has the power to posses the mist, so he should show it off in a better way than just shrouding himself in it. In a way that let's the enemy team think "okay, we need to respect that thing". I suppose the best way would be a similar thing to Viper's ultimate from Valorant: a damaging field that zones both the enemie's and his team, which would also show how little he cares for others. How strong that field would be and if it would make zoning too strong is a question on it's own, but you could definitely make something along the lines happen and it makes me sad that Riot seems to just overlook these crazy ideas for the sake of probably in-game clarity and toxic behaviour of your teammates, because of course that can easily be used for trolling your own team by zoning them off on purpouse or something similar. But still, i think Riot could definitely try something more crazy than the more basic/generic things they put out these days. Other examples include Yone and Rell, which i had high hopes for but turned out to be a bit "lame" if you know what I mean.
This video basically expresses how I feel about a lot of champions. It feels like they prioritize they characters looking attractive rather than storytelling.

One of the reasons I love Dead by Daylight character designs is because they aren't scared of giving the characters scars, whether it's on their body, like the spirit who has her leg and arm cut off by a katana, or something simple, like a face scar, like on David, who is someone who constantly got into fights when he wasn't within the Entity. Once again, check out the character designs there TBSkeyen, you would love some of the character designs there.

@syao When I was mentioning scars, I was referencing how league is usually scared of adding scars to characters, such as how Sivir is a treasure hunter who in her lore experiences near-death adventures, yet she has the body of a swimsuit model. League has always had an issue with giving scars to characters where it would make sense. Dead by Daylight isn't as afraid, because they have Spirit, where her entire arm and leg are chopped of by a katana, Twins shows a hole in her chest where Victor resides, and Hag, who is just a mess. So in the long run, the scars thing was just showing the difference between the two games and how scared they are of showing off scars, dismorphed bodies, and when they use beauty.
You can feel the salt and rage in Skyen's mouth, cmon Riot fix Kaisa's design so Skyen can sleep peacefully every night
I doubt they’ll give her a full character design change but best case scenario she gets an updated look in Legends of Runeterra that at least looks SLIGHTLY more rugged and creepy
I do find it pretty funny that league of legends has monster characters in it seemingly trying to entice monster fuckers but then it fully bails in the chance to add Kaisa to the list despite the fact that it would make her design way more interesting and cool
Kai'Sa's design is one of the few that I think exemplifies perfectly the problem most of the playerbase has, it's not that characters are hot, because trust me people probably find EVERY character to be hot in League, yes, probably even Skarner too, the problem is that the character design not only makes absolutely no sense within her story and the context of her character, but it goes AGAINST what the character is.
She's supposed to be fused with a void creature and have void creature like characteristics, but she literally looks like Kayle if you took off the helmet, the wings, made the spandex suit black and grey and gave her purple accents. Is purple accents all it takes to make a void champion now? People would've LOVED a monster-girl type character, she's still technically human but she's got all these parts of her body that are modified and fused with this void creature that at first sight you can't quite tell _what_ she could be, such a missed opportunity it makes my blood boil, I would legitimately be disappointed in myself if I was the person designing Kai'Sa and either I decided or whoever is in charge made the choice to make her a boring, generic hot babe in a spandex suit.
Her entire character design and her story are completely separate things and feel like completely, vastly different characters. And it's not even the fact that she's hot, because a lot of people will cry and shit their pants about ''durhh you just hate attractive people'' and that's not the point, the point is that her entire character design goes against the character's themes and story and makes absolutely no fucking sense.
Hey! I know it's been one year, but it's me, I'm the person who finds Skarner hot. We.. Hm, *I* exist.
So i went to read up on this character and i have no idea if this is accurate but from what i got is thatbshe is a survivor and over coming the trauma is why she is so humanoid and her weapons are the way they are.
Sje does have a helmet and from what i saw even her cleavage gets covered up. She is kept as human like as possible to show that she has conquered her past and the void that dispite everything she has made a human out of a monster, or rather her humanity will always shine and break through the void.
As for make up, it can be seen as something more ritualistic rather than just secks apeal, war paint in that she puts it on in order to show that she, as a human is not feral, is cognitive. Humans use make-up not monsters... also humans use weapons like guns not tendrils only monster use something so far gone and that's beneath her.
She has taken them and forced them to be her armor and weapons in a way thats not like them showing that she a hunan has hunted and conquered.
Heck you can say her secks appeal (cleavage), she looks good like a model or cosplayer and voids don't look good imo she refuses to be uglified by monstrosities.

Really wish they went the Samus powersuit route where the suit was more armor-like. With that you could make her look even more like a void creature utilizing the helmet. Furthermore as this armor in an symbiotic relationship with Kai'sa make it where she can't remove any of it

I feel like a cool design idea for her would almost be to go in a female venom type of thing, really amp up the symbiotic suit and monster aspects
Since Kassadin is using artifacts to stall void corruption. They could do a "Made in Abyss", by making the story about how what the artifacts are actually doing. Basically, Kassadin has been taking on the full "curse" or corruption of the void while his daughter Kaisa gets the "blessing" or benefit, with the artifacts magic reading (or misreading) it as the best way to fulfill his wish or their function . Only way I could think of to explain her design.

She was right before the breaking point before KDA completely invaded the design process (at least it appears so). I mean unlike with “the creature that must not be named” she at least had a story other than money grab.

As much as I love Kai'sa gameplay wise I have to agree so much with your critic on her design. It could've been such an interesting design. But hey maybe (which will probably not be the case) she gets a design rework or maybe at least a skin which would make her more relatable to her lore since we are getting more and more lore inspired skins (IF Riot would do something with her lorewise -.-)
Imagine a Kai'sa and Rek'sai joke interaction where Kai'sa says "Ugh, I don't need to hear that from you, mom!" or something silly like that.
Considering that based on her extended bio she also lost her mother in the earthquake that started her story (that Kaisa cause herself as a prank to a passerby nomad), the implications of that dialogue would ignite the playerbase for good and bad.

As a Kai'sa Main, I enjoy nothing but hearing TB Skyen talk about how awful her design is because on one hand, I agree and on the other, I love to hear him get so passionate about his hatred for the lack-luster design.
One thing that I hate about kai'sa's design, is the fact that she can upgrade her abilities, but her body just illuminates a bit? Like she could've gotten thicker and bigger suit parts, but they decided to just make her a bit brighter? Why can't her wing cannons become thicker and longer when maxing Q+W???
Khazix spoilt us on these progressive abilities, because Viktor should've gotten these on his update too
I felt the exact same way when she came out. I was like... really? All these years later and I still can't get behind the design.

The main problem seems to be the contradictory description of being monstrous when she just looks like a regular human in a bodysuit. Her visual design is very appealing to the audience, but the game lore is trying to bash us with "shes a monster" when you can't really see it. I think something like "Harbinger of the Void" would fit better, if they really wanted people in lore to be afraid of her. Like where people see her appear, and then the void comes to consume everything, and they don't see her fighting against the void, and it becomes a huge misunderstanding she can't actually reverse.
I always loved the idea of Kai'sa being a battleworned warrior who cared a lot about trying to maintain a sense of human beauty (in whatever form) because it's the one thing still tying her to the life that she never got. Let her express herself and her sorrow.

You know you messed up when Kassadin looks more like the power fantasy you were basing your design on than the actual character you came up with. Seriously Kass looks way more corrupted than her, with his unnatural skin color, weird looking headpiece, weird voidwalking ability, etc....
Wow the idea at the end was amazing and I'd love to see them do something like that
if she'd be more monstrous or even just give her something worthy to be "feared, this can tie up to dare I say Jhin's design, cuz if they do it would make things clearer to the lore of the void, give her a unique body structure that is very recognizable, and gives her an extra visual narration of her story.
You can also tell how important the void symbiote is to riot when they realized they can shove her into practically any skin by completely ignoring the fact that she normally has most of her body covered in everything past the release skin... which also kinda ruins the point of the ctrl+5 toggle.
I would LOVE another redesign video for her!! You guys did so well with Ashe it would be interesting to see how you do with Kai'Sa

I completely agree with the whole makeup thing, however, I do have an argument for you. In martial arts, most people wear skin tight clothes made of flexible materials so that they can move freely and give opponents less to grab onto. I think she should be rather skinny, if not very skinny because it's mostly the symbiotic creature giving her the power to push back at all. So, a slender nimble frame with a creature that boosts offensive property, on top of being in constant combat, she should be rather skinny. That being said, she should have like... Jinx's cup size due to her constant movement and optimization for hit and run combat. Most endurance athletes have extremely low body fat and it would add to her aesthetic as a void creature. Slender arms and legs with a mask can be scary when done right.

It would be a painful/gruesome process of them binding.
Make it like teeth or tendrils grabbing into her skin, make her a malnourished looking humanoid thing thats defined by her incredible perseverance, which in turn could be a plotelement as it is what gives kassidin doubts, that it may actually be his daughter.
@@Killroy007 No arguments there. But as they stated, it is a symbiote. Maybe it wasn't that bad (that binding process) Although I argue it probably was. But either way, malnourished and gaunt looking is probably better for conveying her void upbringing.

I like kai'sa a lot but I agree with what you said and I think she deserves better than to have a stupid design that doesn't allow her to be the ruthless hunter monster girl that she is supposed to be

I remember when Kai'sa released I made the same rant to my friends. At the time we all shared this opinion but she was just a hiccup in a roster of increasingly good champions the game was adding. We moved on. Nowdays, as I finally stopped playing League after ten fucking years, I see Kai'sa as the beginning of the changes that plagued the game till today and will just continue nonstop. The chinese industry makeover.
Where the ruined king is finally revealed to be an edgy white haired gothic e-boy with biker leathers for clothing and unnecessarily scattered pieces of armor that clearly resembles chinese /korean MMO's Aesthetic, despite saying to the public his design was inspired by early spanish noble fashion, lmao.
Where they stopped releasing monstrous characters for life, and when the community started getting mad about it they told us they were going to release one a year, and this year's release was Lillia. LMAO.
When the ruination event completly ignores the characters that are cannonicaly important for the mist, like Yorick, Maokai, Hecarim, Mordekaiser, Kalista, and so on, cause they are less popular and wouldn't sell k-pop skins.
I guess one could make a point about 'monster-no-sell-skins, hot-chicks-and-eboys-do-sell-skins, Rito-Games-is-Company-Must-Sell-Skins'. yeah, I get that. But League did not became the game with one of the biggest player base in the world but worrying exclusively about what sells. They became a huge hit creating Anivias, Gragas and Cho-Gaths. Maybe they don't sell enough, but they made the game enticing. And now, with this shitshow I finally gave up after 10 years. I'm not trying to sell myself as important among million other players, but I do hope in the long run I'm not the only one. I do hope that after Tencent keeps screwing things over it becomes clear that not only popularity on sales makes games what they are. It is just a piece of the pie and sometimes you have to compromise.
PS: I'm not even going to ramble about power creeping for sales. That's just the other 50% of the shitshow.
