It’s really funny to me that Skarner tells Taliyah that he commands stone when the only rock-based move he has in his kit is… digging up a boulder and hyuckin it.
It's worth mentioning that Milio's grandmother was exiled from Ixaocan because her twin sister performed some act of treason or rebellion. Skarner's reaction to Milio is because he still remembers his family, and does not trust him as a result.
I love how delusional he is. Like how you pointed out, he is incredibly quick to say that he is the death of anyone in his path, that he is untouchable but then turns around and flatters himself and saying that he leads without fear and only wisdom. Love this guy.
Yeah, I felt EXACTLY the same way when I listened to the quotes at first. He threatens Qiyana AND DAMN MILIO, then proceeds to say he doesn't use fear.
I wonder if he's like a Lobster. Like he grows due to age. So his kind doesn't start big but just keeps growing over the years. Except without the inevitable death from growing too large. You could see ones the size of normal scorpions in that case and over the course of a thousand years they would become titans.
Yeah, that's probably the case why he is so gigantic right now. Maybe in the past when they were fighting the void bracken were much smaller, maybe human sized idk.
If I remember correctly (tbf, my zoology classes where in 2018 so I could be very wrong) all arthropods do grow endlessly until they die so it wouldn't be really weird if that's the case, even if he is not a lobster or any crustacean
I am so happy that Battlecast references the "glass bones and paper skin" meme but also they preserved the old "skar skar skarner" line in Battlecast of all things
i think, skarner might be one of the creatures that grow forever, and since he is ancient he might have crossed a tipping point where he becomes this basically immortal being feeding on the powerful elemental magics in ixtal
True, he seems like a confident titanic being, but not evil. I guess that being the same voice actor helps with that. Edit: Poderia ter respondido em português...
Something thats stuck with me about new skarner, people don't start out with his kind of world-view, something *made* him this way. And if I was a betting man, I'd say its what the void did to Icathia, right on his doorstep.
They said that there was nothing special or unique about the design of old skarner, but instead of taking the things about him that were interesting and expanding on them, they took them away and turned him into yet another generic fantasy monster. Such a shame, that they turned him into the very thing they accused him of being in the first place.
Agree. I'm not a Skarner fan, I'm not even played him once. But I'm still disappointed. I already think Skarner rework is one of the worst reworks. They completely deleted everything, instead of improving little things what made Skarner interesting. It's not rework. It's a new champion.
I really don't understand why this was incompatible with old Brackern lore: they could have a magic cristal on their back that stored their past lives memories that gets mined for hextech, and Skarner realising that becomes more and more isolationist. He could even be more angsty bc he left his brood to form the Yun Tal and they were attacked while he was away Like Ixtal is already the region that Piltover is trying to mine and exploit, why did we have to lose one of the most compelling and tragic parts of the Runeterran lore? And where is hextech gonna come out of now?
My personal thought but I think there is multiple reason : - Seraphine lore was proof that riot didnt know what to do with hexteck but too many « good » champion use it to be about slavery - arcane reframe it to be something more simpler without including skarner and riot want to make it canon - Skarner is not main protagonists material and with his story and importance to the lore he should have been. but no one play him or like him so instead he is now an well intended antagonist in Ixtal
@@Milkiiabut he shouldn't be... When riot came to ask us main skarners we let ALLCLEAR that he must stay a good guy .... To be fair, the whole hextech crystal is a little incompatible with skarner's and the yuntal's age. Since they believe the outside is a wasteland, surely they've gone into isolationism before hextech was invented, and they have had no interactions with the outside (including being hunter/mined for crystals) or they would know what is going on there
He should have an underlying depressive tone, in my opinion. He maintains Ixtal because it should be the last connection he has to his lost people. He stands in vigil but under his iron claw
Honestly skarner aint exaclty wrong about the outsides world. you’ve got Demacia who would kill everyone in ixtal without a second thought cause they’re all mages, Noxus who would immediately try to invade and conquer them, the freljord which is a land of raiders, azir rebuilding shurima who would definitely try to “regain old shurima” from ixtal, bilgewaters pirates and pilotover barons trying to pillage the land and the void which is a hop and a skip away. He’s kinda right for wanting to keep ixtal blocked off imo
Right? Not to mention the mad gods of Targon and the countless void intrusions, plus, he probably also remembers the rune wars. But apparently trying to keep the people under your care safe from genocide is evil lol
It genuinely sounds like new skarner’s voicelines were written by two separate people who had no idea what the other one did. Like even in his death quote, in the first one he says “i must protect them.. i must…” like even in his dying breath he is thinking about the ones he should protect and take care of. But in the second one he yells “i’m eternal raahhhh!!!” like he just can’t believe it he isn’t as powerful as he thought. He just fell off of his high horse and that’s it. It’s literally the last words of a two dimentional dnd villain. I genuinely I hate what they did with him.
Hearing Skarner turn from the loneliest glass-cannon (literally) in the Rift to being a xenophobic sovereign is a serious 180° turn. I like it. xD Makes him a whole lot more important to lore! I am curious about the Bracken tho. He says he left them a millennia ago. Given his concurrent size and ability, this elevates his kind to legendary creatures. Where are the rest of them now? I am CURIOUS. 😅
It seems they're all gone besides Skarner. Perhaps they died to protect Ixtal which would explain why Skarner is so protective of it and why he views the region as his.
@@dragonicdoom3772 perhaps? But the 'left my brood a millennia ago" still sounds like they're in another side of the world. That got me thinking. 👁️🗨️👁️🗨️

Riot states that one of Skarners core points is that he is a good aligned creature and yet they made him a tyrant. I do not understand how they botched his voice lines like this. He’s a tyrant or even close enough to Kayle and it feels terrible. I don’t like it
They took my sad little boi and made him kinda evil. Its a great change of pace, but I feel like we lost of what made Skarner, Skarner. I know it is a rework, but Skarners whole feel of searching for his family was great. And with the loss of some of his old voice lines like “we think alike, summoner” it makes you feel a lot less connected to him. Which makes sense since that summoner lore is long gone, but it still feels like we lost a little bit of connection to the bug boi. This Skarner is interesting but I feel like in getting it we lost a extremely unique perspective that was on the rift.
I also want to say I don’t think this rework is bad I love it, and i like that Riot is willing to make a 180 to a character for a rework, it shows they can and are willing to take risks. It just feels like we lost a very unique and intriguing character to show this.
I dislike the change of some of the good purely good character stories of league over the years to something morally grey or evil for the sake of making it more interesting. I AM still mad about zac
He says he's eternal, but he strikes me as quite naive with his "Nail meet hammer" mentality. He probably does believe there is nothing outside of Ixtal because he's the last Brackern, and he projects that loneliness onto the Ixtali. Some more voicelines about the emptiness of the world beyond Ixtal would've pushed that side of him to the surface.
Haven't seen it commented here yet but his recall voicelines almost felt like he has PTSD, and im quite enjoying the headcanon of skarner in a way being terrified of the void because of what he has seen, and has the toxic protectiveness more because of that rather than only wanting power and attention
He tried to suppress his ego to do his job and as usual became an egomaniac thinking that he is the only one who can shoulder the burden so there is no other loss but also he is the only one keeping it all together and he has done so much he deserves a reward and also his duty turned into his identity
It is interesting being brazillian, interacting with both VOs (portuguese and english) and realizing how different "tyranny" sounds in both languages (to Skarner and his character). Comparing one to the other, he sounds evil in english, to the portuguese VO, and sounds merciful in portuguese, to the english VO.
Some of his voice lines seem to imply that when he was young he was much smaller and could walk among the people and they’d stop to worship him. I wonder if the implication is supposed to be that as he grew bigger he became more isolated and more jaded and lonely and the lonelier and bigger he got, the more narcissistic and xenophobic he got as well because he’s the biggest thing alive and in his head by himself all day
"yeah no excited by any of this" is the definition of the entire reword and as a skarner otp im so annoyed feels like they did a rework because they had to with no direction and ended up just shipped whatever
I think what Skarner needs is a soft(mostly sad) corner, the Character is missing the loneliness it used to have, being the sole survivor (it's still there but much less) he needs to have this weakness where maybe a compassionate child says "I get you Skarner, I miss my family too" and he becomes all "wh- no- I- I don't have any weaknesses!!" trying to be all bold and brash to cope where deep down he's very depressed, he has lost his kind and will do **Anything** to keep Ixtal safe no matter the limit, because he doesn't want to lose his region and people too. He's missing that energy of "I'm just a sad boy deep down and need someone to comfort me" I think the duality of this enraged protective beast who's broken from within would do more for his Character and give him some sympathy which old Skarner had in abundance.
I would love a Netflix mini series based on milio trying to adventure beyond the walls of ixtal and the main plot line revolving around having to get Skarners permission to leave
19:12 I like that cause scorpions do carry their brood on their back. Again I kind of like the idea of a guardian deity that might be way too protective over their people
In the end, as a Skarner main, he has improved. If only slightly. He's still one note, but now he has a place in the world. He fits his role well. And ixtal was in need of its own final boss.
i feel like he should sound more paranoid, kinda like kled but instead of being funny, its concerning and at times terrifying, since their trying to pass his story off as 'horror'
Bro, the moment I heard 28:50 I just couldn't help but realize "GOD DAMN IT DID THEY MAKE SKARNER EVIL SO THEY COULD MAKE SERAPHINE GOOD AND THEN JUST COMPLETELY REMOVE THE HEX TECH CRYSTAL STORY THEY HAD!!?"
“Is it a good vision? Is it a happy vision? Is it a fun vision? It sounds... definitely doesn’t sound sinister...” I don’t know why but that made me laugh so much. Your tone was just amazing I’ve watch that one little small part so many times now - it’s just so funny to me.
It would make the most sense for Skarner to be like this if he truly is the last of his kind, but he's determined not to outlive this new community he has created and has thus gone a little off the deep end. If we had indication that he's still the last Brackern, who were all killed millenia ago, I think I'd like his new personality more. He does appear to be lonely? but it reads more that his power and paranoia has isolated him from people less so than "everyone of my race is dead, I must protect my new family".
13:4315:00 might be inspired by Ungoliant and shelob, ungoliant being the mother of all spiders in Lotr, shelob her child patroling the borders of a secluded region(mordor) and while shelob is massive it's not as big as a mountain unlike her mother. plus they are both arachnids
And it was on this day that nearly EVERY champion in piltover lost a layer of their character RIP the horrors and morals of hextech usage. The complacency and ignorance. Doing everything they could without considering if they should. Shiny naturally occurring magic rocks with no complexity go brrrrrrr
4:54 that begs the question... who'd be the bottom? 🤔 Also, did anyone else like get a connection to Orianna's lore regarding Skarner? Like... Skarner genuinely believes humans can only bring destruction out of fear for their mortality, but Orianna herself sacrificed her mortality to care for the people of Zaun. She sacrificed everything for her people just like Skarner also did. I honestly want to see an interaction between them since lore-wise isn't Orianna currently venturing through Runeterra for a purpose or something? But this is probably just heavy delulu and copium cause RIOT REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE MY GIRL'S EXISTENCE 😭
I imagine this could ring a bit hollow to some, given that I was evidently one of the very few people who liked both Galio and Skarner as they were portrayed in their original appearances, and was oblivious to their apparent unpopularity for a long time, but I feel like both of their updates were conceptual failures because of what was lost in their original- Admittedly tiny, scraps of character in their old lore. I started playing League of Legends in and around the time of one of my deepest depressions, the primary reason for it being loneliness. So when I played League and discovered these two champions who had loneliness woven into their characters I felt closer to them. It made these magical monsters a little more down to earth and human, and me feel a little less alone in their company, if you you'll allow the sappy comment lol. Skarner was the sole guardian of his slumbering people and he was lonely, Galio failed to save his creator Durand and was left in isolation. And I think that conversely, it's the familiarity with that sharp pain that made their being defenders and fighting for others noble and inspiring. Just generally better contextualizing their actions and positions in the world. But post updates Galio has become a happy-go-luck himbo with a love for fighting just because, and is only slightly confused and uncomfortable in his voice lines about his autonomy and freedom fading in and out since he acquired sentience. Or now with updated larger-than-life Skarner who thinks so much of his own strength and immortality that it makes him and unknowing tyrant and essentially erects his very own barrier between him and his 'beloved' people. I'm sorry, but that's just lame. Why not have Galio be frightened of his inconsistent sentience and have his loneliness be portrayed through that very specific and unusual struggle; why not retain the idea that this impervious and immortal scorpion was still vulnerable to emotional and mental weakness, but that he was rescued from by the Ixtal people, which gave him a new sense of community and companionship which could have instead humbled the warrior instead of growing him. OBVIOUSLY the conversations should be multifaceted in not just ones surrounding the changes in their characters and lore, but everything else about them too. It's not as simple as they were great before and now they suck, and I really do understand and even encourage a bit of creative freedom when updating some of the least popular champions in the game, but these replacements only really succeed in having me lamenting the lonely souls I fell for before we lost them.
I hope he gets a cover story or art or something interacting with his people, fleshing out his protector, guardian side mode, like him letting children play or deaw on him or something
To me, Skarner talk almost like an overprotective father that has many rigid rules at home and don't want his children to leave and experience the world, his feelings towards the Ixtal people are in between, like a father figure: -'I must protect them, they are my people, my responsibility.', And like a tyrant: -'I spend too much time taking care of these mortals, I fought for them, they are of my ownership'.
I don't mind him being angry and overly zealous, but I really wish they kept the whole sad/lonely vibe he had before. He just comes across as an angry monster now and that's it.
I think he genuinely does know what’s going on outside of the borders, at least partially. He’s expressed multiple times in the voice lines that he could hear events far beyond his body when beneath the earth. Traveling through the ground like the vibrations of threads. But I do see where you’re coming from in terms this Skarner concept. He’s very much a tyrant, but there are SOME glimmers of more gentle moments beneath that stone with his comment on children and such.
20:51 that's also the mindset of a lot of heroes, to protect My city, to protect My friends/close ones, to protect my people/clan/country etc... Skarner has the problem of the arrogance some lines have, that the voice itself is similar to the voice of other male villains in the lol universe, and the fact that he is not in a position of being perceived as the weak against a strong oppressive force makes him the oppressor. Use this sentence after some sad flashback, with the interlocutor being desperate cause someone near him is going to be hurt and nobody will associate it with a tyrant.
7:28 i think it was it was Jax, his full name is something like "Cail Rhynx Saijax Kohari Icathun" where the first two words are his parents' names, third is his name, fourth is his profession (Kohari Warrior) and fifth is his place of origin (Icathia). It would make sense to shorten his name to something that can be just a single sound considering how quick you have to be around Voidborn in order to survive (Anthony Reynolds' "Eye in the Abyss" is probably my favourite lore story) Jax is also known for liking eggs and I'm pretty sure he ate one in the "Where Icathia Once Stood" (or I'm mixing it up with the story where he fights with Fiora [well, not really] on a bridge).
About where would you find the room for a lot of him: maybe they work like lobsters and get bigger with time, him being as ancient as he is just grew to this size while others died before for some reason
i remember there was an issue in the production as they had problems removing old skarners code as some rito codes were infused with is and old skarner was basically the spaghetti glue for rito for some reason..
When coding it is best not to reinvent the wheel every single time you need it. For instance: I just built an effect that causes enemies to be unable to move or take actions for a short duration. This is the first time I’ve done this. The second time I make a character that can apply this “Stun”, instead of rewriting the code for it, I tell the program to just use that other one but apply different values to the variables for this one. This cuts down on coding time tremendously. However, if I ever get rid of the original “Stun” Effect establishing code, it ruins all of it. I doubt Skarner is the first champ that could apply a Stun, but something in Skarner’s kit was the first iteration of something, and was referenced so many time that it broke everything when removed. Unfortunately fixing this sort of thing is like having to try every possible solution to an Algebra problem rather than simply solving for X.

Long time viewer here, just recently started watching your videos on this channel also and I love them, I just wanted to mention since I get a more casual vibe from this channel, maybe some light copyright free background music wouldn't go amiss? 9:59 this doesnt nessesarily make him evil. Gotta keep in mind its a voice line for *Killing* milio, someone on the enemy team. What you can still take from it is skarners worries. Also wow yea what a nice guy! I guess its in a scorpions nature to sting, but its intersting since he's a guardian.
The compelling thing to me is that he blusters and puffs himself up, but he has these lines that show he's *desperate* to be loved and needed. He's similar to Volibear in that way, but seemingly a bit more vulnerable under the surface.
I actually love that he doesn’t have that many character interactions because it shows that he literally has no knowledge of the outside world. He doesn’t even really reference other cultures that weren’t within his immediate vicinity. No yordles, shadow isles or mordekaiser… everyone knows morfekaiser!!
I think a voiceline people overlook but that is still very important is the one against Milio. “You carry the Traitor’s fire” Can someone explain this one?
I love how he has the same voice actor as Iridikron from world of warcraft, And becuase they both talk about earth and shit they sounds the EXACT same and i love it!
After listening it all Skarner has the traits of the unwanted hero ( character where it's help is not required, his personality is garbage or when the help is required but the other people fears what could the hero do to them), the traits of the old man who experienced things, the delusion of an eight grade síndrome patient, and when you fuse it all you get a villain, and the quotes that could be neutral or good are tainted and become tyrannic sentences... When he says "Nobody will hurt you now" it's not inerently evil, it's the perfect farewell to an ally or ex-ally that you care for, If they were forced to do something the hurted theirsef emotionally, if the world around you is a hell nobody should endure, if they were hard working and loyal and lost their life saveing/protecting others...
While i do agree skarner has become too violent now, i think it probably has a reasoning for it instead of doing it out of malice like, say, mordekaiser or viego. Skarner is very old. Like, ancient. He has seen so many calamities come and go, he saw the shurima/icathia war, he saw the darkin wreck havok, and possibly sensed across the earth all the other calamities that runeterra has on a daily basis: piltover's disregard for the environment, noxus using demons to conquer, the black rose's sketchy shenanigans, demacia's racism, ionia constantly being sieged, the inner conflicts of bilgewater and freljord, aurelion sol looming over the world ready to shatter it any second now and the void slowly but surely making it's way. With ALL of that, it wouldn't be a surprise that skarner would react in such an overprotective and agressive way. Is he in the right? not really, since not all of the outsiders are dangerous. But this has potential for stories in the future. Like skarner starting to learn that the world outside of ixtal also holds people that are struggling to live and needs protection. I do believe riot still needs to show us more of the lore about skarner cause as of right now, we have nothing outside of his voicelines and a short bio. They gotta tell us more about skarner's reasoning and the brackern. Cause when you hear him talk while moving, he sounds far more reasoning. ...however i think the voicelines where he interacts with the jungle mobs other than the baron and the herald should be deleted. They're smaller animals skarner you dont need to be so harsh with them ;o;
theres something i always wondered about giant characters in games like this. like theres no way this guy is hidden at all. do people just treat him like a world event? like do they just climb the tallest tree each morning and go "ok, giant scorpion is over there we should be good for the meanwhile"

"Child of Ixtal, I will show you my vision of the future." "You are no threat to Ixtal now." there's more to grab but he does care for his people. Like have some thought at least.
"I lead not through fear, but wisdom and respect" See that's the thing about tyrants Skarner, they tend to confuse fear with respect
Honestly might be respect. Just respect based on deception.

@@cartellaio6955Morde: "I lead." End of quote.
15:25 I think Skarner's mentality is "I use my wisdom to lead. People being afraid of me is just a side effect."
He doesn't see his terror as terror, which is an intersting twist on it a well meaning boomer, But riot leaned on the sterotype instead of recontixilazing it to make intersting or making it intersting.
"I am the senate"
"I am Ixtal"
It’s really funny to me that Skarner tells Taliyah that he commands stone when the only rock-based move he has in his kit is… digging up a boulder and hyuckin it.
Passive and e are also controlling the earth/tremors
@@sibanbgd100 Not really on E, he is just excavating
Yes but to be fair...that`s a large rock.
Q is Rock Type, Passive, W, and E are all Ground Type. Not sure about Ult (prolly Bug Type)
he commands stone like how he “leads through respect”, just brute forcing it
It's worth mentioning that Milio's grandmother was exiled from Ixaocan because her twin sister performed some act of treason or rebellion. Skarner's reaction to Milio is because he still remembers his family, and does not trust him as a result.
His line about Milio carrying "a traitor's fire" is about Milio's grandma being a traitor that was exiled from the Yun Tal.
My simple self just assumed it was because he carried a fire that didn't hurt you
I love how delusional he is. Like how you pointed out, he is incredibly quick to say that he is the death of anyone in his path, that he is untouchable but then turns around and flatters himself and saying that he leads without fear and only wisdom. Love this guy.
His people dont fear him haha.
I am so happy that Battlecast references the "glass bones and paper skin" meme but also they preserved the old "skar skar skarner" line in Battlecast of all things
i think, skarner might be one of the creatures that grow forever, and since he is ancient he might have crossed a tipping point where he becomes this basically immortal being feeding on the powerful elemental magics in ixtal
ah yes, the lobster god of myth
2:48 Skarner: "I will uproot you from this world like a weed"
My brain on Guilty Gear soundtrack: "Naturally, as a matter of course."
The crazy thing is that, in Brazilian Portuguese, he doesn’t feel as evil. Maybe something in the performance? The lines are quite similar
True, he seems like a confident titanic being, but not evil. I guess that being the same voice actor helps with that.

He could even be more angsty bc he left his brood to form the Yun Tal and they were attacked while he was away
Like Ixtal is already the region that Piltover is trying to mine and exploit, why did we have to lose one of the most compelling and tragic parts of the Runeterran lore? And where is hextech gonna come out of now?
Because seraphine exists and riot dont want to make her a monster using dead scorpions
My personal thought but I think there is multiple reason :
- Seraphine lore was proof that riot didnt know what to do with hexteck but too many « good » champion use it to be about slavery
- arcane reframe it to be something more simpler without including skarner and riot want to make it canon
- Skarner is not main protagonists material and with his story and importance to the lore he should have been. but no one play him or like him so instead he is now an well intended antagonist in Ixtal
Seraphine .AND hextech. Arcane cant have champs that are genocides and the high (hated) society at the same time.
@@Milkiiabut he shouldn't be... When riot came to ask us main skarners we let ALLCLEAR that he must stay a good guy .... Guess they really are just trying to erease any trace of goodness in him just to he never came back to center of lore... He haven't a pretty de face after all. Seems fair......(Irony)
I love Skyen obsessing over Skarphite 4:47 - 10:02
Just looked up the diet of armadillos, apparently scorpions are on the menu
Yeah now it makes sense
Honestly skarner aint exaclty wrong about the outsides world. you’ve got Demacia who would kill everyone in ixtal without a second thought cause they’re all mages, Noxus who would immediately try to invade and conquer them, the freljord which is a land of raiders, azir rebuilding shurima who would definitely try to “regain old shurima” from ixtal, bilgewaters pirates and pilotover barons trying to pillage the land and the void which is a hop and a skip away. He’s kinda right for wanting to keep ixtal blocked off imo
REAL IXTALI PATRIOT 🫡🫡🫡
“Beyond the jungle lies a wasteland of pain and suffering”
True, Skarner. So true.
Skarner: *Benevolently listens and assist people*
Also skarner: *Burns the entire forest because it was "necessary" and calls it a day*
"The yun'tal will decide your fate." " I AM THE YUN'TAL."
Skarner turned from crystal sad boy, into uncle ruckes and it is glories.
It seems they're all gone besides Skarner. Perhaps they died to protect Ixtal which would explain why Skarner is so protective of it and why he views the region as his.
am i tripping where does he say he left them
@@dragonicdoom3772 perhaps? But the 'left my brood a millennia ago" still sounds like they're in another side of the world. That got me thinking. 👁️🗨️👁️🗨️

What I got from this is that skarner wants to build a wall and piltover will pay it

3:13 Well actually🤓👆
Insects are arthropods as well. Arthropoda branches into Hexapoda (where insects are) and Chelicerata (where scorpions and spiders are).
(+ Crustacea and Myriapoda. The Arthropods are a diverse bunch)
And skarner has 6 legs instead of 8, FAKE SCORPION! xD
Riot states that one of Skarners core points is that he is a good aligned creature and yet they made him a tyrant. I do not understand how they botched his voice lines like this. He’s a tyrant or even close enough to Kayle and it feels terrible. I don’t like it
"Oooo Enemies to lovers?"
Me instantly: Old Men Exes?
I love how everyone simple agreed with Skarner and Malphite enemies to lovers old man yaoi
This could have been a completely different character tbh, instead of overwriting the existing one.
Why is the Milio-Skarner story a better version of Disney Wish? XD
A giant scorpion makes everything better.
Because any take on the basic story of wish is better then the one we got?
He says he's eternal, but he strikes me as quite naive with his "Nail meet hammer" mentality. He probably does believe there is nothing outside of Ixtal because he's the last Brackern, and he projects that loneliness onto the Ixtali. Some more voicelines about the emptiness of the world beyond Ixtal would've pushed that side of him to the surface.
Glad to have your commentary and shared opinions. Even if Riot isn't going to give us some good long content - at least we can rely on you
Haven't seen it commented here yet but his recall voicelines almost felt like he has PTSD, and im quite enjoying the headcanon of skarner in a way being terrified of the void because of what he has seen, and has the toxic protectiveness more because of that rather than only wanting power and attention
Helicopter parenting
His kind are basically the equivalent of the sandworms from Arrakis.
"Your Impact on this world is but a grain of sand in a vast desert"
"Your life is literally as valuable as a summer ant"
He tried to suppress his ego to do his job and as usual became an egomaniac thinking that he is the only one who can shoulder the burden so there is no other loss but also he is the only one keeping it all together and he has done so much he deserves a reward and also his duty turned into his identity
The "pokemon" line from battlecast is a nod to an easter egg line you got when you sat in the bush for a little while on og skarner
"I cant miss my kind if i kill EVERYONE ELSE"
It is interesting being brazillian, interacting with both VOs (portuguese and english) and realizing how different "tyranny" sounds in both languages (to Skarner and his character). Comparing one to the other, he sounds evil in english, to the portuguese VO, and sounds merciful in portuguese, to the english VO.
Some of his voice lines seem to imply that when he was young he was much smaller and could walk among the people and they’d stop to worship him. I wonder if the implication is supposed to be that as he grew bigger he became more isolated and more jaded and lonely and the lonelier and bigger he got, the more narcissistic and xenophobic he got as well because he’s the biggest thing alive and in his head by himself all day
We lost one of the best pieces of lore building for this...
Yeah that's my head cannon pretty much.
I would love a Netflix mini series based on milio trying to adventure beyond the walls of ixtal and the main plot line revolving around having to get Skarners permission to leave
It's a shame we lost legends of runeteraa, a skarner update letting us see his kind would've been sick
That Seraphine voice line always made her sound like the real monster with a pretty face.
“Is it a good vision? Is it a happy vision? Is it a fun vision? It sounds... definitely doesn’t sound sinister...”
I don’t know why but that made me laugh so much.
13:43 15:00 might be inspired by Ungoliant and shelob, ungoliant being the mother of all spiders in Lotr, shelob her child patroling the borders of a secluded region(mordor) and while shelob is massive it's not as big as a mountain unlike her mother. plus they are both arachnids
Btw for those who don't know, the Yun Tal lie to the common folk of Ixtal that the land outside is DEAD. Read The Axiomata, it's wonderful.
And it was on this day that nearly EVERY champion in piltover lost a layer of their character
RIP the horrors and morals of hextech usage. The complacency and ignorance. Doing everything they could without considering if they should.
Shiny naturally occurring magic rocks with no complexity go brrrrrrr
Agree...
He isn’t evil, he is just an overprotective father.
4:54 that begs the question... who'd be the bottom? 🤔
Also, did anyone else like get a connection to Orianna's lore regarding Skarner?
I hope he gets a cover story or art or something interacting with his people, fleshing out his protector, guardian side mode, like him letting children play or deaw on him or something
it's kinda scuffed that they removed the genocide for technology plot right now that the Congo situation is finally getting out
To me, Skarner talk almost like an overprotective father that has many rigid rules at home and don't want his children to leave and experience the world, his feelings towards the Ixtal people are in between, like a father figure: -'I must protect them, they are my people, my responsibility.', And like a tyrant: -'I spend too much time taking care of these mortals, I fought for them, they are of my ownership'.
I don't mind him being angry and overly zealous, but I really wish they kept the whole sad/lonely vibe he had before. He just comes across as an angry monster now and that's it.
The effects on his voice gave me chills
It would make sense to shorten his name to something that can be just a single sound considering how quick you have to be around Voidborn in order to survive (Anthony Reynolds' "Eye in the Abyss" is probably my favourite lore story)
Jax is also known for liking eggs and I'm pretty sure he ate one in the "Where Icathia Once Stood" (or I'm mixing it up with the story where he fights with Fiora [well, not really] on a bridge).
Jax's full name is Sai'jax Cail-Rhynx Kohari Icath'un.
As a Mordekaiser/Skarner double main... I think the two of them would be friends. They already sound just like each other!
Scarner seems really cool. I'm gonna vote for him next election 👍
"we think alike summoner..." 😭old skarner will be missed
Strange how they gave their scorpion champ a damage over time but it’s not themed as venom
In case of Skarner (Brakern) i whoden't be surprised if he had the sqme kind of lore as Regigigas.
What if his brood/family are some of the mountains of Ixtal.
About where would you find the room for a lot of him: maybe they work like lobsters and get bigger with time, him being as ancient as he is just grew to this size while others died before for some reason
Something like, "You are but a grain of sand before an unstoppable monolith. Observe and despair!"
i remember there was an issue in the production as they had problems removing old skarners code as some rito codes were infused with is and old skarner was basically the spaghetti glue for rito for some reason..
When coding it is best not to reinvent the wheel every single time you need it. For instance:
I just built an effect that causes enemies to be unable to move or take actions for a short duration.
Skarner vs Milio in the Thunderdome is something I didn't expect but really want to see.
Remember to use Skarners protection kids.
Hey Skyen! We can look to a random Warlords of Draenor dungeon boss for a good workshop quote: ‘You are but a pebble amongst BOULDERS.’
Skarner to gromp: *disgusting!!*
Gromp: *wtf did i do?*
I would to hear more "confused old man" through his voice lines.
6:30 Qyana didn't have lines insinuating murders between the princess ? Maybe Skarner is talking about Qyana's plans to become empress...
Im just waiting for him to have an interaction with allied Ixtal champ, "Ixtalians! Roll out!" 😂😂
new skarner gives me the same vibes as the Megatron we see in the Michael Bay Transformers movies.
edit: yeah they're the same character basically
I think a voiceline people overlook but that is still very important is the one against Milio.
“You carry the Traitor’s fire”
Can someone explain this one?
I love how he has the same voice actor as Iridikron from world of warcraft, And becuase they both talk about earth and shit they sounds the EXACT same and i love it!
He's basically Aurelion Sol level of threatening, but without his good humor and sarcasm
And blind evil
If something menace = danger
if menace killed = no danger
that's some ancient wisdomm
While i do agree skarner has become too violent now, i think it probably has a reasoning for it instead of doing it out of malice like, say, mordekaiser or viego.
Skarner is very old. Like, ancient. He has seen so many calamities come and go, he saw the shurima/icathia war, he saw the darkin wreck havok, and possibly sensed across the earth all the other calamities that runeterra has on a daily basis: piltover's disregard for the environment, noxus using demons to conquer, the black rose's sketchy shenanigans, demacia's racism, ionia constantly being sieged, the inner conflicts of bilgewater and freljord, aurelion sol looming over the world ready to shatter it any second now and the void slowly but surely making it's way. With ALL of that, it wouldn't be a surprise that skarner would react in such an overprotective and agressive way. Is he in the right? not really, since not all of the outsiders are dangerous. But this has potential for stories in the future. Like skarner starting to learn that the world outside of ixtal also holds people that are struggling to live and needs protection.
I do believe riot still needs to show us more of the lore about skarner cause as of right now, we have nothing outside of his voicelines and a short bio. They gotta tell us more about skarner's reasoning and the brackern. Cause when you hear him talk while moving, he sounds far more reasoning.
...however i think the voicelines where he interacts with the jungle mobs other than the baron and the herald should be deleted. They're smaller animals skarner you dont need to be so harsh with them ;o;
theres something i always wondered about giant characters in games like this. like theres no way this guy is hidden at all. do people just treat him like a world event? like do they just climb the tallest tree each morning and go "ok, giant scorpion is over there we should be good for the meanwhile"
That spongebob reference, lmao. The joke response abour glass bones and paper skin. I did not expect such a reference in the league.
