The Stars and Stripes Forever (1929, Sousa Conducting and Speaking!)

  • Broadcast on Thanksgiving 1929. This is a rare recording of both Sousa's voice, but of Sousa conducting his band. Sousa hated recordings as he feared that records would replace live music, so most recordings of the Sousa band were lead by someone else.

I was a head-rocker as a child and this was an excellent piece of music to rock your head to. It's also great to blast out the car windows when tooling around Santa Cruz (only I used a more digital version recorded in the 21st century). You know, if a circus tent caught fire, the circus band was supposed to play this to make people evacuate in an orderly fashion. That's not a joke, btw. It's a circus tradition since the big circus era of the early 1900's.

    • @mq172
      @mq172 Год назад +3

Indeed I have heard of this tradition. But when circus tents were waterproofed with highly flammable *parrafin*, there generally wasn't time to be orderly about anything in a fire, and any circus band member would likely have prudently fled at the first sign of flames.
Actor (and 70s gay TV icon) Charles Nelson Reilly told his harrowing tale of narrowly avoiding death in such a life-changing circus tent fire in his youth.

    Live from the White House:
    My fellow Americans.
A few years ago, we had found strange anomalies that will potentially ruined the foundation of our society and our proud nation.
These anomalies are the so called "Alternates".
Now, as they've spread throughout the four states in the Midwest, scientists from Maize Technologies, working together with US Department of Temporal Phenomena have invented many technologies to deal with these "Alternates".
With the power of The Horned Serpent, these Alternates will be evicted from reality once and for all.
Let us not forget that the Alternates terrorizing us because we love freedom and they hate freedom.
So let us protect our families, our homes, our neighborhood, and our nation, my fellow Americans.
    Thank you.
    - President James Dean, the 37th president of the United States.

    Two interesting musical points here.
Musical Point No. 1. The first time through the trio (and also underlying the piccolo solo) it sounds to me like there are non-stop arpeggios in the woodwinds - possibly adding a harp part - which are NOT in any published edition of "Stars & Stripes" that I've played, or am aware of.
Of course, it's well known that the published editions of Sousa marches were very fully scored, to facilitate their performance by bands of all sizes with widely varying instrumentations. And that in his own performances, Sousa would tweak that instrumentation -e.g., having the woodwinds or brasses lay out for a particular strain. (Sousa was too good of a musician and play his own marches fortissimo straight through!)
But these arpeggios sound like something entirely new.
Perhaps tracking an arrangement for orchestra?
Anyway, I like it - and it's very interesting to hear!
Musical Point No. 2 - the use of a suspended cymbal - not crash cymbals - in the break strain (or "dogfight," in band slang) after the trio.
Again, not something in the published scores (I believe).

Postal 2 coz of the psychotic fun and madness it bring off and Mandela Catalogue speaks for itself, but the distorted part where Gabriel appears during the T.H.I.N.K Principle part is a highlight of the entire series.

We are currently receiving countless reports of unidentified hostile organisms that we'll refer to as Alternates. Until we have a complete understanding of the threat, it is important to stay home, lock all doors and windows, and have access to a loaded firearm or any ranged weapon at all times. You will know if an Alternate exists solely based on their physical characteristics. If you see another person that looks identical to you, run away and hide. If you see a person that has a biologically impossible characteristic, run away and hide. If one manages to break into your home, refrain from any kind of communication or contact with the threat. These intelligent lifeforms utilize elements of psychological warfare to take advantage of their victims. While we heavily discourage any kind of contact or communication with an Alternate, we make exceptions for attempts at executing them yourself.

This particular recording, yes. This was a live broadcast with Sousa conducting. Sousa hated recordings, and most recordings his band made, were not conducted by him. Also, the older recordings had to fit on a 2.5min wax cylinder, so tempos and repeats may not be authentic.

This was not a live broadcast. It was recorded by Brunswick for the National Radio Advertising Company’s special Bond Bread Radio World Tour, syndicated for broadcast on Thanksgiving Day 1929. Notice how the word “transcribe” was worked into the script. That was the required notice that it was a recording.

Good gracious, what a treat!!! This recording is 95 years old. It should be celebrated at 100. I am so glad for the Internet when I can find treasures like this online with a few taps of my fingers on the keyboard. Sousa's voice and the music are crystal clear. Gracious, what a delight it must have been to be in this man's and his orchestra's presence when he played. My Mom loved Sousa's music and would tap her toes, clap her hands, and sing right along with his recordings and/or a military band playing these tunes with tears of joy welling up in her eyes. We are fortunate to have had the film "Stars And Stripes Forever" (ruclips.net/video/AHRgyttNXM8/видео.html) with Clifton Webb as Sousa.
